Fix for Nespresso problem - pump runs but no water comes out

  • People report problems with their Nespresso machines where if the machine sits with a dry tank for too long, air enters the system and goes into the pump. With air in the pump, it will run but not pump water. My solution is to find a piece of flexible pipe or hose that fits exactly fits into the water intake point, and push water into the system by forcefully blowing into the hose. (Vertuoline 2014 model)

Ok update. The issue came back after a few days. We tried the same fix but it didn’t work. We called the Nespresso Support number and they are VERY. Helpful and my favorite price (free 😂). They had me fill the reservoir with hot water and then lift up the carriage where the spout is. Next they told me to stick a toothpick up the spout. I did and it barely went in. They said push harder as it should go up almost the length of the toothpick. I did that and a BUNCH of clogged coffee grounds cam out. They then had me run a cleaning by pressing the coffee button 3 times quickly. The water flowed thru fine after that. Thank you for posting this fix, and to others who continue to have this issue try what I posted as well!

I just used the toothpick technique on our Nespresso Breville having this same issue. Worked like a charm! There was a bunch of grounds clogging the spout. Thanks!!

EXCELLENT TIP! This is by far the simplest and least intrusive solution. Especially on a brand new coffee maker. We bought a Nespresso Vertuo, 54 oz. (De'Longhi) from Amazon. Wouldn't pump water. I did a return and bought a replacement, same unit, and received the replacement 48 hours later.. The replacement unit did the SAME THING! Would not pump water. After reviewing all the solutions online, I tried this one first. SCORE!!
FYI - The guy who originally posted this fix did not specify what size tubing he used. For the newest model Vertuo, 5/8" OD tubing matches the water inlet best. It make take you a few tries, but it works! For me, I had to fill the tube with water 3 times and blow with all my might each time before the unit started working correctly. And it was BRAND NEW!!
Kudo's to Mr. Trifunov! Thank you for the Tip!!!

Thank you!! This was the least invasive, last expensive, most convenient repair recommendation I found online. I tried this before anything else because my husband had some 1/2” pex tubing on hand. Cut off a length, it fit perfectly just as you stated, added some water and barely had to do anything to clear it, but it worked. I’m enjoying a nice cup of coffee right now!

I went out and bought a cheap generic machine to replace a unit that had not been used in a year but only had light usage before that. I've tried the zip-lock bag (what a mess!) and the syringe method but this method makes the best sense. Off I go to the hardware store tomorrow. Many thanks to Jerry Trifs!

I dealt with this this week! Here’s some feedback for people out there:
    - TLDR: Tried tube/forcing water approach. Didn’t work. Filled tank up with hot water. Ran through troubleshooting w/ Nespresso support. Let water tank sit full on machine for 3 days. Ran a cleaning cycle (lock, 3 quick button taps)and it miraculously started working!
    - I bought 1/2” flexible clear plastic tubing, secured with duct tape. You have to really seal it bc the 1/2” didn’t quite cover the intake.
    - I also bought 1/2” PVC. It was really thick + inflexible. Which is what my local Lowe’s had in a short length. This was a problem bc the top of the machine juts out so the end of the pipe doesn’t lay flat over the intake.
I think the combo of the tubing approach + letting the tank sit did the trick for me. Thanks for getting this how-to out there!

Hello and Thank You! Yes this works. Excellent plan. The dry water line was primed using this approach and I have coffee again. Quite the time and money saved. I'll pass $20 coffee money to a local charity on your behalf. I used a larger syringe to increase the pressure of water into the supply line and a right sized faucet washer to provide a best seal between the machine and the syringe.

Interesting... I wonder if the seal on the water container is going funky. Prior to the failure to pump the water... Yesterday there was a puddle of water coming from the base of the water reservoir. I wiped it up and removed/reseated the reservoir.
Today the water pump was straining and barely had output and was in a powered off state. I jostled the lever up and down to trick it into thinking I put a new pod in (didn't) ran again. It pumped but very strained. Repeated that process 2 or 3 times and water came out finally but kinda like it's got a prostrate issue. 😂
Gonna try your fix today and run some descaler thru even tho we are not due for one.

This may be a silly question, but I’m trying this with the water tank pulled out and a straw and then pouring water in the straw and blowing while pressing the button to pump it through. Is that right? How much water should come out to know if it’s working? I’ve tried this a few times and see some drops of water, so I put the water tank back in, but still just drops come out; not a steady stream of water 😢

    • @geraldtrifunov2456
      @geraldtrifunov2456  Před rokem +2

Hmm, not sure. If the pump actually fills back up with water I expect you will notice a change in how it sounds, and water would flow as a working Nespresso would. FWIW sounds like you are doing the same thing I did. Also FWIW I only ever did this once so am not a veteran Nespresso fixer. It seems this works for some people and maybe not for others. But I think you will know if it starts working right. Good luck.
