  • I tried Sarma for my first time in Belgrade, Serbia. Sarma is a very traditional Serbian dish and is extremely popular during the holiday season! After spending over a month here in the country and receiving so many messages tell me to try this Serbian specialty , I finally gave it a shot! Now I made a little mistake and I thought that the sarma was going to be small and ended up ordering cevapcici mix plate as well...... This ended up turning into a feast! I hope you'll enjoy!

I loved stari kajmak-old kajmak and is a yellowish colour, we had it at the farm and there is no taste like it here in the west - the only thing I can think of is blue cheese without the "blue" lol. It is exactly what Travelwithchris said that it is a type of clotted cream but made with cream instead of milk. Mascarpone is a type of clotted cream which I bought once and my mom said it was not the same as our kajmak. Devonshire cream is a clotted cream, but never tried it to see if it is similar.

Hello Chris! First of all, I must tell you how much fun it is watching your videos, such a positive attitude towards new experiences. My wife and I are watching your videos from Germany, we are from Serbia but living abroad for some time, and it is soo great seeing our homecity again, you do amazing job describing people and sights of Belgrade and Serbia, thank you for that :) Not to mention that we are always hungry seeing that sarma and all those crazy mixups you order. I've noticed that you appreciate a glass of good beer and also a good bargain, so if you have time, I would highly recommend a walk to a bar named Srpska kuca piva in Milesevska Street (Serbian House of Beer) - a hidden gem, a little bit outside city centre but not so much, and in a nice part of town. Crowd is very pleasant, locals (mostly students but you can also see actors from the nearby Theater), a the beer is cheap! Of course, afternoon/evening is the time to go! You can try some of the localy brewed artisan beers, or just go classic with Zajecarsko or Valjevsko beer, no mistakes there. Not to mention how awesome would be seeing my favorite place in your video 😁
Anyways, keep up the great work, and enjoy your stay in Serbia :)

Well, you tried your first SARMA. And as for the combinations, I can tell you the following.
Every housewife in Serbia will say that her sarma is the best, but believe me, IT IS ALWAYS THE BEST. Try SARMICE SA ZELJEM (small sarma wrapped in green spinach leaves instead of sauerkraut), it's a light version. And on these cold days, I recommend you go to a fish restaurant and order a spicy, hot FISH SOUP. It will definitely trigger blood in your veins! In some restaurants (e.g. restaurant "ŠARAN" in Zemun), the soup is served in a fish pot under which the flame burns, so your soup is always hot.

Sarma is even better when its reheated mate thats for sure ....typically when you cook sarma you cook a big pot of it, like 10 or 20 if you have big family, so then you can eat them 2-3 times. Just put them in the freezer so they dont spoil. Also there are variants, in vine leaves or in zelje leaves, sometimes without meat, vege version. No meat for me is not so traditional and i think its a novelty.

Also, u have summer version(again in my oppinion) and that is "Punjena paprika" (stuffed pepper). Like, sour cabage(Sarma cabage) is mostly thing Serbjans prepare during autumn and winter, paprika is a summer vegitable, so it need to be fresh for Punjena paprika. But, lucky, u can find both meals during any season here in Serbia 😁

Sucks that you're visiting in the winter and that COVID is still alive and kickin'... if you're ever back during the spring to fall seasons, you should check out Serbia further outwards and visit all the different meat festivals, the trumpet festival, try the different cheeses, smell the peppers roasting for ajvar, see the village of Donja Lokosnica turn crimson from all the peppers hanging and drying on the walls of the houses. I noticed you didn't try any wine, Serbia's known for over 400 wineries - check one out! Also, If you have the time check out the Golubac fortress and take the old train in Mokra Gora and visit Emir Kusturica's Drvengrad you probably won't be disappointed - Johnny Depp visited amongst many others!

Every region or home has little bit different sarma receipe and little bit indenpendent taste. @@Travelwithchris I might tickle your imagination a bit now, but the Sarma dish you previously ate - can be improved tenfold! Basically, this sort of a dish becomes better with additional slow cooking...Virtually, the longer it gets heated up, better it becomes. In fact, the actual Sarma dish usually is left overnight in the oven on a low heat a day before Slava or Wedding starts, thus making it extremely tender and juicy for the lunch whilst keeping it warm.
To shed some more light on this, if you're willing to take a read:
Repeating this over the course of three days (the usual/typical Slava festivity time in Serbia, per family) results in something that'd make your taste buds explode with flavor. Sarma definitely is the ultimate comfort food in Serbia, and it is prepared way differently to that of Turkish Sarma that comes rolled in wine leaf and, obviously, without pork.
People might be oblivious to that particular fact, but the food you eat in the Balkans did emerge in the Balkans, and it is authentic for the region. You'd have a very hard time finding Sarma you eat here anywhere near Turkey. Cevapi & Pljeskavica fit that role, too. Burek, however, is one of the things that definitely was influenced by the Ottoman empire in both preparation and taste. Other dishes only share names and preparation to some extent. Ingredients are rather different.
If you get an invitation for St. Nikola, be sure to take it It is the Slava that falls on fasting days, so there should be fish instead of pork : ) Custom is to bring a wine, maybe a chocolate or two.

You should also try posna sarma which is a vegan kind eaten here during fasting 👌
And for regular sarma, i like it the best with some sour cream on top, its a perfect combination 😍

there is two types of sarma, small and normal. It is just about size, taste is same. There are similar meals like sarma. I recomend "punjena paprika" which is "Stuffed Peppers". It is basicly sarma with pepper instead of cabbage. Since i am not bih fan of cabage i allways prefer stuffed peppers.
