MY SERBIAN GRANDMA TEACHES ME HOW TO MAKE SARMA | Stuffed Cabbage Roll Recipe

- This week I'm introducing you to my grandma (my Baba)! I’ve been cooking in the kitchen with her for as long as I can remember and today she is teaching me, and all of you, how to make sarma.
The preparation of sarma, or cabbage rolls, vary from person to person and country to country but this is how my Baba has been making it for years! We typically prepare sarma for special occasions and use homemade pickled cabbage with a hearty filling consisting of meats, veggies, and lots of garlic.
Also a quick fact for you, did you know the word sarma comes from the Turkish word meaning “wrapped”? The more you know!
_______________
🥣 Ingredients
🥬Sarma
Oil
1 lbs smoked bacon
6 onions, chopped
2 carrots, grated
2 lbs beef
3 lbs. Pork
3 tbsp. Salt
1 tbsp. Pepper
2 tbsp. Vegeta
Paprika, to taste
2 cups rice, uncooked and rinsed
Handful of parsley, chopped
3 large cloves garlic
2 tbsp. Flour
Other
Pickled Cabbage (there are about 10 leaves in a head)
Bay leaves
Smoked pork
🗺 Directions
Over a medium heat, add oil to a large pot. Let it heat up a bit then add the smoked bacon, onions, and carrots. Let brown and add your meat. Cook about half way then add pepper, salt, Vegeta, and paprika.
Add the rinsed, uncooked rice, parsley, garlic and flour to thicken the mixture.
Mix very well and cook the meat completely. Let cool until you are able to handle the mixture.
Separate the leaves from the head of cabbage and cut the stems off. Lay the leaf flat and scoop a large spoon of the mixture in the center of the leaf. Fold the sides in, just a little, and roll the cabbage tightly. Place on a plate, seam down.
Once all the cabbage rolls are ready, oil a large pot and layer with some loose cabbage leaves, a few chunks of smoked pork, bay leaves, and paprika. Lay the cabbage rolls flat and continue layering.
Top with more smoked bacon, cabbage leaves, and paprika. Fill the pot with water and place an upside down plate on top. Let the water come to a boil on high heat, then reduce to medium heat for about 2 hours. Stay close, you may have to adjust your heat.
Once complete remove from heat and enjoy!
______________
🌟 Review and Tips
1. Store the cooked cabbage rolls in an airtight container overnight or freeze to enjoy at a later date.
2. The extra layers of cabbage on the top and bottom of the pot will prevent the cabbage rolls from burning.
3. You can use any combination and quantity of meat you like. Make it vegan by substituting the meat for diced potatoes or pescaterian with canned tuna or your favourite cooked fish.

"Moj granma", "moj moder" "ol moj lajf", ljubim te Baba sto si zadrzala naglasak. Drago mi je sto te unuka uvazava i sto se divno slazete.
Just discovered your channel. Love your recipes. Married to my Serbian husband for 42 years. Lost him a couple of years ago. Lost our kids Baba 2 years ago. She used to make all these recipes exactly as you are. I try to make them too.
Baba is great, all for color!! Nothing without Vegeta! 🥰 and she makes everything Moj way!
Vegeta makes everything better!
So sweet.. My grandmother was from Serbia too..
That's so cool! Do you know where in Serbia?
Hi I would like to be yiur friend I am Serbian live in UK, but I do all this and I have been in uk for about 15 years. Xx
DOBRO Baba!!! DOBRO!
Baba legendaaaaa, napravi me da sam mladja❤
i'm soo touched to have seen this video today / it instantly took me back to when my 'Medz-Mama' passed on her recipe to me back in the days of yore (pre- youtube) / we're Western Armenian, so there's slight difference in recipe but i am digging that smoked pork: MAN, WHAT A SARMA 🤩
i am 1st-gen born in the states and over my life's experience, i've noticed that immigrant Grandparents have SOOO much bottled up inside them. Most of it never gets an opportunity to be shared in any other way than by the expression of FOOD. Language, cultural, age-related barriers (et al) play a role in that but food cuts through ALL THAT...
it's been 12 years since my Grandma departed, but your video kinda put all that in perspective again for me today, with a fresh smile on my 💗 so thnx 🙌😊
My father was Serbian. My mother learned how to make Sarma from his mother. We had many Croations foods. When you said "coffee break", that took me right back. There was always a coffee break when women were in the kitchen cooking. You and your Baba are so cute.
We have to keep the tradition going, there will ALWAYS be time for coffee 🤩
My gratis only 4 years old we have also a very nice relationship and I pray God one day I can teach her my recepies too like your grandma is teaching you……you’re both beautiful…
Omg, you two are the cutest baba and unuka! Please more recipes from the lovely duo. Bravo za obe 😊

Nadja pozdravi babu! pozdrav za gospodju!
Baba te pozdravlaj!
Wow I am Serbian.. Wow.. I started to cry.. Omg pls, pls be my friend ... She reminds me on my mother xxxxWere do you live, she hasn't lost her accent, and I speak like her as I cam in uk at 38. My daughter speaks fluent English not Serbian xxx
Thanks for your comment! Haha yes she still has an accent, but I love it!
omg baba is the cutest sweetest funniest!!! i'm obsessed!!!
Happy to hear😊
I worked with a woman named Mileva at a restaurant who made amazing sarma.
I was raised on Sarma. Still my favorite.
It never gets old!
Go on baba pour that vegeta in gold dust bravo baba ❤️
This takes me back. My father is Serbian but my mother is German and she was the one who actually cooked the sarma for our Slava every year using a recipe from my Baba. Absolutely delicious dish, I've never known any non-vegetarian who doesn't love it, and it makes your house smell amazing! I would practically dream about it in the weeks leading up to Slava, then I would eat leftover sarma for weeks until I got so sick of it I never wanted to see another bowl of it ever again, lol. Until the next January that was, when my cravings would kick in again. Now that I have my own home I'd like to try my hand at making it, so thank you for the recipe!.
This is so awesome, thank you for sharing! I know exactly what you mean, you love it until you hate it! The first time can be a little scary, but Im sure you'll do a great job and it will taste just like how your mom used to make :)
@@janakolasinac1686 I did last year, twice! The first pot was a nearly total loss lol, didn't know what I was doing and messed up just so, so many things. Threw it out and made a second pot which came out tasty. Did my customary gorging and froze the bulk of it for my best friend and his family. My friend said it only lasted until the next day, so I'd say that was at least some confirmation I got it right. :)
Kakvo srce od bake ❤️
baba je legenda :-)
I love cabbage rolls a lot 😍! We make it the same way like your grandma…. because we are a neighbor of Serbia.
That's great! I'd love to try the Italian version!
My family is Croatian and our sarma is just about the same with whole cabbage being sour. We make sauerkraut in the barrel for the late fall and in time to have cabbage rolls for over Christmas and then to last until April. A barrel is a lot and it is kept in garage.
"You can't eat 60 cabbage rolls all at once." Hold my beer. ;) Sarma je vrh. Fantastično si to uradila sa babom, svaka čast.
I love watching your videos it makes me smile. The best part was the 3 garlics 🤣 if she said it's 3 then its 3 lol we don't question baba
I wish I could give this 1,000 likes. So sweet watching baba pass down the traditions with so much love❤❤❤
Hehehe we make sarmale ( Sarma is for singular in Romanian language) in Romania too. But we put same tomato past in that meat composition to give color instead of paprika, and it give an very good flavor.
I understand Baba , my mom and all my sisters don’t measure the onions and all those ingredients, they make it just because they know how much to put it just by looking.
Baba in Romanian means old woman. Thank you grandma
Baba reminds me of my Baba.
My baba and mother are both from Serbia, Belgrade area. They taught me to roll in boiled cabbage and layer the rolls with sauerkraut. Otherwise, just like yours!
Babe su zakon! it is wonderful to see you two together.❤️💕💚
Thank you! ❤️
Measuring with Moj hand baba je super just kolor
Ha ha hvala!

You and your baba are precious! These are moments that you will cherish. Thanks for the uplifting video!
You are so kind, thank you!
I learned of my Croatian and Slovene heritage when I grew up, I’ve been trying to learn the wonderful Balkan recipes like this one. I eat my Sarma with squid ink risotto, boiled potatoes, or plain.
Thank you for showing it..greetings from south spain..
What a beautiful blessing to have your Baba show you her tricks in your national cooking. Baba is a true delight to watch.
If someone cannot eat pork, is it ok to use all beef?
Of course! Lots of people make it this way and it is just as delicious. It might be a little dry so Baba suggests using a less lean beef :)
I am from Indonesia my fiancé from Serbia he gave me the recipe and taught me how to make sarma. Today I plan to make it
Ok your Baba is just too cute! Loved the out takes and thank you for the recipe!! ❤

hahahah Baka legenda, majstor koji vlada kuhinjom....it is so nice to see you cooking with your Baba.....nista bez vegete...and next time try adding leeks with onion....huuuuuge difference in flavour
Love the suggestion! Thank you 🤩
Thank you for posting this! I have the basic recipe down, but my rice never cooks right when I make it in the oven. Going to try Baba's stovetop method today. Going to check out the burek video next! You two are so cute.
Your Baba is so cute. And you're not too bad yourself. I love to cook and was watching a video about Serbia before the revolution. They mentioned sarma and I found your video. This is one of the best cooking videos I've watched. There was enough detail about the ingredients that I'm going to try to scale it down a little and make it for friends. I'm hoping I can find a European store here to buy the pickled cabbage heads so I don't have to wait three month to make my sarma. Again, great video.
Love from Romania , this was great !
Simpatićna i mnogo draga. Super sarma ❤
Hvala puno na lepim recima!

Evo upravo ste me motivirale i ja sam napravila moju prvu sarmu po ovom receptu!
LOVED it!! She’s the best! You’re both adorable!! ❤️
Thank you Anita!
@@tetkanadia9045 Dear Nadia, you never freeze already cooked Sarma. It tends to be mushy after defrost. Here's the catch. You do everything till the point of cooking it all. You stir fry meat and all, and make rolls with fresh sour cabbage, and just freeze it like that! Than, in months, when you wish for Sarma, you just take it direct out of freeze and put it in a pot, smoked meat, ribs, what not,...and cook it like freshly made. And it is like heaven, no mush! Also, you eat it with Proja (like corn bread) !
P.S. Baba is a queen!... :~))
Pojlubi svoju Babu!!! 🥹 I burst into tears when you introduced her, I miss mine so much ❤
Baba je zakon!
We moved to northern Ontario, Nadia and I’ve been craving SARMA! I’ve never made them before but I had my dad and stepmom send me kupus & smoked meat so I could make some up here… my stepmom Karin sent me this video so I could learn how to make it. She had no idea you guys were family and I’ve already watched this when you first posted it. So great that I could use this to learn and grateful to see yours and Kuma’s face. Made me smile! Please send my love and regards to the family! Love and miss you all xoxox

I am drooling right now, i crave some Sarma so bad. Havent had them since my grandmother passed away 6 years ago and havent found any restaurant around here in Germany that makes them. She always made a big big pot and they were even better and more sour on the second and third day when they soaked up all the juice.
Great lady baba is the original and best cooking school no edit❤❤❤❤
Almost how my bubba taught me god bless you
