  • Quick note on Shin Godzilla. Whilst Shin Godzilla can be considered as a villain. Due to him representing natural disasters and the sympathy you feel for him throughout the movie, I labeled him as a neutral force/wild card. However, if you see him more as a villain, that is a valid view.

Godzilla is such an insanely flexible character in terms of role, it's amazing.

Author William Tsutsui, who wrote the book Godzilla On My Mind said in the book that Godzilla is like a drunken uncle that pays a visit. He’ll yell and scream and carry on. As a kid, you know better to run away from him in that condition. But, he is family.
Godzilla is many things to the Japanese and the rest of the world. He is a walking nuclear weapon. He is a force of nature. He is Death’s shadow. He is a symbol against nuclear testing and nuclear war.
What attracted me to Godzilla as a kid was that he wasn’t a powerful gigantic monster. He was a role model of sorts that was not afraid to fight if he was attacked. If if anyone or anything attacked Godzilla, here comes the pain and he won’t run away.
I love Godzilla. For all his flaws and issues, he is more an antihero. He is neither good nor bad, but we all live on this planet with him.

I think Godzilla is the type of character that can work eitheir way, basically he evolved from being a methaphor of the atom bomb to our relationship to the planet, basically Godzilla is a warning of what happens when humanity tries to interfere with nature, it will always relatiatle, but if we respect nature, you would be glad Godzilla at you're side, but remember to stay on his good side or he will turn on you if you do anything to provoke him, unintional or not. It's basically a cautionary tale for humanity to be careful with what you do or there will be consquences.

The answer is Godzilla just needs to be a big force, what that force is for depends on the project and there's plenty of room for variation, all that matters is he feels...well, like Godzilla.

way i see it, it depends on the incarnation
I like it more when Godzilla leans into being scary like shin or minus one but that doesn't mean i don't like stuff like showa or legendary
    They are all cool

Short answer: Depends on the story you want to tell.
G1954, Return of Godzilla, GMK, Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One have very different priorities than the rest of Showa, Heisei, Millennium, Reiwa and the Monsterverse.

I’d prefer Godzilla as a villain because it proves that humans created something so destructive that it can destroy the whole world.

Godzilla is better as a villain because he was literally made to be a villain and tell a nuclear war story about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He’s made to be a force that strikes fear and despair into anyone’s hearts and tell the nuclear story of post-WW2 Japan after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Godzilla doesn’t work out as a hero because he’s not supposed to be one. Sure, Godzilla being a hero is cool and all, but it doesn’t really fit Godzilla’s character. The original movie was very sad because it showed kids crying for their parents, the destruction of Japan, and Godzilla going on a devastating rampage, destroying all of Japan. That’s why I think he’s better as a villain, but he’s cool as a hero, but the *REAL* villainous Godzilla fits Godzilla’s character *VERY* well 🥏🦖

If an animal kills someone, would you call that animal evil? No. Godzilla’s usually only in a more villainous role after he’s been attacked first. Godzilla’s a force of nature, neither good nor evil. On an alignment chart he’d fit best as neutral or chaotic neutral.

    I’ll say…I don’t mind!
I don’t mind him being a Hero! (Like Legendary and Showa Godzilla)
I don’t mind him being a Villain! (Like GMK and Minus One Godzilla)
I don’t mind him being a Anti-Hero! (Like Heisei and Final Wars Godzilla)
I don’t mind him being an Anti-Villain! (Like Heisei and Final Wars Godzilla)
I don’t mind him being neutral! (Like Gojira/Godzilla 1954 and Godzilla Earth)
I don’t mind whatever he is…a…Hero,Villain,Anti-Hero,Anti-Villain or just Neutral! I love Godzilla…I always will!
