Both methods are valid. CGI can age, but if done right it's less noticable. Look at the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. And the weight of CGI can be all over the place, and that's not unique to CGI. Suitmation can look cheesy and cheap if not done well like some of the mid Showa era films. And there are points where the monsters under suitmation did completely unrealistic things like the drop kick. But those are just the flaws. Godzilla Minus One, despite the minimal budget, looks amazing and I'd bet money it'll age like fine wine. The Heisei era movies will also stand the test of time for realistic speeds of the monsters. They don't move very fast which does cause a bit of an overreliance on beam attacks. But all of the flying monsters have super stiff wings. I think that the hybrid of a guy in a suit for motion capture purposes enhanced by CGI is the way to go. Shin Gojira is the best example of believable movement and somewhat quality CGI.
Godzilla 2014 has one of the most underrated cgi in modern cinema. They put effort into making the monsters feel realistic by relying on scales and slow movements. You could really feel the weight of each monsters. It’s like Heisei but cgi
The best use of suitmation in a Kaiju movie ever is in Gamera 3 Revenge of Iris. It’s genuinely perfect because it mixes decent cgi with stellar practical effects and masterfully designed monster suits
Depends on the shot. For shots where CGI wouldn't add much benefit would probably do better with a practical effect. Most of the time CGI would do better with monsters, as they have to move around a lot and with more focus on the story of the monsters, emoting is important. But I think a lot of the shots in Shin Godzilla could've probably been done with a practical effect, even though it looks great regardless.
"Real" is such a subjective term. After all...this is pure Fantasy! Look at the original King Kong Harryhausen-esque version....still looks realistic enough today. Nostalgia plays alot with the presentation...(i.e. Godzilla minusOne). The old monster rubber suit stuff are still relevant and FUN! We...as fans have to pick our battles. After all is said and done...which came first...the Suit or the CGI is a moot point,,,because of the era you live in...or came from. It's ALL good! Celebrate it ALL! Great channel..you are very genuine and informative!!! Kudos! Thanks!
I always found the close melee fights with suits to take me out of the scene because it's so obvious that it's a suit. That's the deciding factor for me when choosing CGI or suitmation because with CGI, yeah sometimes CGI can look fake, but it also makes the close quarters fight scenes feel realistic when paired with good SFX. Adding on, I think that CGI does a better job creating those "oh shit" moments. I wasn't a big fan of 2014 Godzilla, but I have to admit that every time Godzilla or a MUTO appeared on screen, I was on the edge of my seat. The entire airport sequence in that movie is still one of my favorite scenes in the Monsterverse. It can really establish the atmosphere better than what I think suitmation films could.
Godzilla Final Wars cost more then Godzilla Minus One. You can probably save some money with CGI if you don't throw the script out every 5 seconds like Hollywood does. However watching minitures blow up is better than watching CGI blow up.
'suitmation means the actor inside cant move fast in the big heavy suit' yes, all these monsters are supposed to be big and heavy. the slowness and somewhat rigidness really sells it. cgi can get you more movements at the expense of sense of scale and weight. look at gxk where all the kongs are in hollow earth place. until they come back up to the surface their scale and weight really feels like that of ordinary gorillas, not the 300ft titans theyre supposed to be.
Personally. Both are equally cool. Though I do personally lean more to suit acting. I also appreciate CGI, especially in regards to scenes if done more better in that area
I think Suitmation's main advantage is being a real object. While CGI can look this way as shown in Shin Godzilla, Godzilla 2014, and Kong Skull Island. Animation seems to be getting much worse over a short period of time, with it looking more like video game quality. So I think suitmation overall is better, while CGI can look as good if done right.
The main reason why CGI has looked worse recently is because bad working conditions for VFX animators. It's just an industry issue, and although I would also want to see suitmation come back big time, that also needs VFX yo work
My problem with the suits is the stories I've heard with them getting so hot that the actor passed out. they had to turn up the AC on stage as cold as possible to try to make the actor more comfortable. even then, he came out of the suit drenched in sweat.
@LazarusGamingandDiscussion Don’t get me wrong, i like Legendary’s design for Godzilla, but considering 99% of films today use CGI and nothing else (including the Monsterverse) and that suitmation looks more realistic, Godzilla in suitmation will always be the definitive approach for the King of the Monsters.
Both are awesome, but I do love the practical, as I feel it has heart in the sense of "we don't have the money but we want to do something fantastic", even back in the day, I felt more impact when Godzilla was getting bombarded in Mothra vs Godzilla than Godzilla falling from troposphere and hitting the ground in king of the monsters. As he mentioned you just know you are looking at CGI, which is not bad but also like he said if the story is not intriguing it can take you out of the emersion for old and new. CGI is 0an uphill battle, because besides trying to convince you that what you're seeing is actually the thing it's supposed to be, it also has to try to convince you that it's even a real physical object the begin with. A lot of CGI succeeds at the former but not the latter, whereas with practical effects it's reversed. There are some shots in the Heisei and Millennium era movies that are some of the best and most convincing in any of the films in the franchise, but those are the exception, not the rule. For instance, the endsokeleton in the final scene of The Terminator looks _amazing_ as a prop, but it's very obvious by the way it moves that there's someone just off-screen puppeteering it. Meanwhile, the apes from Planet of the Apes are incredibly expressive and life-like in how they're animated (thanks in no small part to their mocap actors), but at the very best of times I can still tell that they're CGI. War for the Planet of the Apes definitely had some photo-realistic shots, but those are the exception. I would say in these instances, the benefits of having the characters be more dynamic and expressive outweigh the lack of photo-realism. The apes in the original Planet of the Apes might look physically real, but the best makeup in the world is not going to make me believe that they're not just people wearing prosthetics. However, the quality of animation on the apes in the new movies does convince me that they're real apes within the fictional story, if not real physical apes in the real world. When it comes to Godzilla, to me personally, unless the character needs to be incredibly expressive or doing complicated movements, the benefits of Godzilla looking more like a physically real entity outweigh the benefits of him moving and acting like a real animal. Suits look hella goofy
CGI
Suit and cgi
cgi.
Cgi
$”,$’eke
Perfer Suits, it doesnt feel like a Godzilla Movie if it doest or if its not from Japan
Then you missed the point of godzilla's versatility cause godzilla's character is whatever the story wants him to be, regardless of what country is handling him or how he's brought to life. His nationality or him being a suit isn't what defines godzilla, nor is it the be all, end all to him. Why is it always toho purist who despite their love for the big G, don't ever want him to grow or expand as a character or IP.
@@Kaiju-bm4ts might as well have godzilla have purple spots and flying to the moon.
Yes Godzilla's character can be whatever the story wants him to be, but that doesn't mean that it's true to the original version of Godzilla.
@@GSTE_ Godzilla's character is beyond that of his original message so what endgame were you even trying to achieve with your comment?
@@GSTE_ And godzilla's character is beyond that of his original message so what type of conclusion or endgame are you even trying to achieve here?. Especially when you just said he can be anything the story wants him to be
@@Kaiju-bm4ts yes it is, but how beyond from it's original version can it get before it's too far.
Judging by reception of the newest movie there is no limit for some people.
Cgis kinda boring in my opinion
Except gemstone Godzilla
CGI, especially if it's well made like 2014's "GODZILLA" and 2023's "GODZILLA MINUS ONE".
Rubber suits are goofy overrated fodders.
Both like 1998 did
