Refreshing to finally see a video that isn't just "minus one master piece! legendary lizard boooo!" (even though the thumbnail is a little misleading) and instead actually shows the pros and cons of each interpretation of the character and explains how this versatility has been a staple of Godzilla almost since his inception.
I think you are the first person to get it haha! I do agree the thumbnail is a bit of a hot take, but "trashy" doesn't mean "trash", I just meant it was dumb fun. I really did try to clearly explain why I and others felt that GxK was a "bad" (but fun) movie compared Minus One aka the "good" movie. I like both movies, I even say so at the final thoughts portion of my video. But thank you for watching!
These movies can only be compared by the one character they both share, Godzilla. Other than that, these movies are beyond different from one another. They are polar opposites, each films representing different aspects of Godzilla, and how he's made it to be 70 years old. These two should not be compared to eachother, as both are reaching for different goals and stories.
Thank you for watching! However I disagree that they aren't worth comparing. These are the two most recent Godzilla movies in the public eye, with the average movie goer hearing over and over "GxK bad, Minus One good". This video was made to analyze WHY people have been saying that, and if it holds any water. Of course there are movies that share a similar feel to Minus One better than GxK, but thats what makes the comparison more interesting. I do like both of these versions of Godzilla!
@@wariobrosz You know, I think when it comes to something that's worth being compared to something else, it's really just an opinion. An opinion that I can respect, whether it's different from mine or not. I absolutely loved GxK and it was the first Monsterverse film I got to see in theaters, which made me beyond happy. I also loved Godzilla Minus One a lot too. Both films were fun to watch. Anyone who thinks they're worth being compared to each other, isn't bad. The same goes for those who think they're not worth being compared to each other. I respect both opinions, and will stay that way. If you liked GxK more or Minus One more, then that's awesome. I can't hate anyone who has a different opinion (plus both movies were great in my opinion). Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I just hope one day everybody comes to that realization, and learns to respect the other's opinion. Great video, by the way.

I do believe it's possible to achieve a movie that is entirely the monsters, the long bits of gxk where Kong is just exploring proved that to me. Not a world was spoken yet you understood everything. Honestly the only issue with this is the budget. It's way too expensive.
If they wanted to do that it would definitely be animated, the Skull Island show exists so they're clearly not above doing something like that.

Both version try to accomplish COMPLETELY DIFFERENT with Godzilla. One is a guardian of nature, or the personification of nature itself, and the other is the origin of the monster, which is an allegory for nuclear destruction. Most critics or "movie review" channels get this entire thing wrong because they think they understand Godzilla because they watched fucking 2 movies.

Personally I don't think the movies are the problem here, sure GXK didn't hold up as much as Minus One did in the *same* right, but was still charming in its *own* way and I had fun watching both movies. Just proves that the kaiju genre can have multiple themes.
The problem (at least imo) are the fans. I swear, in every video about any of the two movies, you'd always see those power scalers 🤡 or just straight up mv 12 year olds starting a war in the comments about random bs that don't even mattered in the movies, some people really just can't not have a temper tantrum every few movies released 🤦♂️

Honestly, It's because Japan (For the most part) actually remembers what Godzilla, or in this case, Gojira, Is supposed to represent. He represents the damage that was WW2, Specifically the bombs dropped on Tokyo, Where it was a GIANT tragedy to Japan, So Toho made a movie that basically tells us the radioactive effect that said bombings could have and the aftermath that said bombs could also have.
Gojiras original design for the 1954 film literally having his head shaped like a mushroom cloud. Which continues to stick around, most obvious in Shin Godzilla.

I’ve seen your replies, yes they are worth comparing and that’s why you did this. But what’s the point? It’s already been done several times the Godzilla fans are getting annoyed. It’s clear they are two different types of Godzilla movies so why even compare? You make good points though.
Kong has more growth than Godzilla from minus one
Personally, I think the human story is executed perfectly. A monster movie is really meant to have a basic human storyline, since, well, they’re just there to have the plot be followable and sometimes exposition. They’re there for the explaining aspect, similar to how the human characters were for the Showa era, hence why they’re “bad” characters. Not saying the movie is 100% perfect, it has it’s flaws, but they’re easily tolerable and don’t degrade from the fun time.
And to add on, as said many times, a serious war-era movie isn’t really to be compared to an entertainment cartoony yet fun movie. GxK has enough action to keep you locked in, and has a few interesting moments human-wise.

Something that bugs me about Jia is that she could've been given hearing aids, so she communicate with other people using words rather than the hands doing all the word, and you have to insert subtitles on the screen to know what she's saying, but still be thought sign language when speaking to something like Kong.
I think the actual actress is deaf so I don’t think it would be possible to do that

I really hate that you did the comparison of gxk to minus one instead of g14 vs minus one. Gxk was meant to be a movie completely centered around kaijus and kaijus fighting with some parts of humans pushing it forward and got an audience rating so much higher than the actual. G14 wouldve been much more fair, it has great human characters, great conflicts, emotional deaths and more inbetween
While I agree there are other Godzilla movies with a similar style to Minus One, the average movie goer, not the Godzilla superfans, don't really know or care about the more obscure movies. These are the two most relevant movies in their minds. And when average fans hear "GxK bad, Minus One good", I think its fair to compare why people would be saying that. To be honest, humans are the most pointless characters in monster movies. If you set up a cast of monsters that all have their own separate emotions and personalities, why humans unless one of the characters origins depends on humans? you already have these humanized kaiju that experience emotions and character development with their own perks and quirks, Humans are not needed to be the main focus! I loved the newest movie because it gave me exactly what I wanted, a ton of action that has to do with the monsters, and they actually gave some of the monsters character development, Godzilla is now permanently chill with King Kong, Kong Learns how to be a father, and the newest ice character has been set free. We need more of this!

And almost every single monster movie with a few exceptions, humans are the bane of their existence, we don’t care about humans. We want to see monsters be bad asses.
Ultimate weapon? Most of the people fighting Godzilla -1 are normal civilians with limited resources provided by a government of a nearly destroyed country. Not to mention Godzilla pop up attack them with them being prepared. Godzilla -1 is more of horror movie because the human have little chance of winning but still trying to win. Not to mention it has callbacks to classic horror films like Jaws. Imagine that you’re going out to the middle of the ocean to do your daily paid job but Godzilla came out of nowhere and tried to kill you. What can you do to survive? 😃

To be honest, the monster fights in GxK are entertaining, but Minus One feels more grounded. When we see MinusGoji, we can truly see and feel how massive and heavy he is. In GxK the monsters move like they weigh as much as humans.

These are the two most recent Godzilla movies, with a large number of people saying GxK is a "bad" movie. I wanted to do a deep dive to see why people are saying that. Yes they are different flavors of Godzilla, but that makes the comparison easier to digest.

You can't just compare to completely different genres and expect a good reaction, comparing Minus One and GxK is like comparing Scream to the fucking Avengers. Hell I could throw in some more comparisons just to prove a point. Its like comparing bodybuilders to femboys. Both men, both very different to the point where they're hardly even the same thing. Imagine comparing The Batman (2022) and The Lego Batman Movie. Both share the same character but he acts completely different in both of them and basically everything is completely different. Heres another one, comparing a bird and a goddamn velociraptor. Both are by technicality the same thing, but one it a cute little fluffball that flies around and eats bugs off the floor, another is a pack hunting death machine with claws the size of a fucking knife which it uses to shank the shit out of poor innocent dinosaurs and spill their guts all over the floor.

I disagree on the action compartment the American Godzilla the action didn't have the same weight or heft to it because it just felt like more CGI vomit and the attacks like the atomic breath were lack luster and weak, while Minus One it didn't feel like I was watching something that was created on a computer software and with his atomic breath attacks I felt like I literally just watched a nuke go off.
OK this Is what I'll say both movies have their pros and cons minus one is great in terms of human characters and some action scenes, however the monsterverse is great when it comes to pure carnage and just fun action these are two different movies and please PLEASE NOTE there have been Godzilla movies where the cast was irrelevant and there was just godzillas destruction such as the heisi Era, and millennium Era so guys please stop the realistic godzilla approach its just stupid
These are two completely different films. How can you compare two different films? one is about action while the other one is about war there are no fight scenes only destruction. Godzilla Kong was supposed to be bunny cool action packed. Those are the polar opposite things minus one does so compare both films if there’s nothing they have in common.

Minus one was pretty mid in my opinion kinda lackluster
I dont even think the action was better in gxk, Id definetly say films like GVK have much better action, but gxks just feels so cheap, results of the lower budget and strange choice to completely drop the weight in the monsters that even gvk and kotm attempted to have. Other than the suplex snd Kong using suko as a bat, I really dont think its that great.

Tbh, the only reason I watched GxK was because of the fight scenes, those were the only entertaining bits of the movie. The writing in general was bad, and the way they brought back Mothra was actually just BS.

I love how Legenedary is making homage to the Showa era with how expressive the monsters are and how the recent movie is a bit cartoonist in style, that and there's less and less human scenes, more focus on the monsters.

i already see the problem this guy dosnt get non verbal story telling like how he neglected kongs entire story of finding and saving his people or even how godzilla even had a character in gxk they are told in completely different ways focusing on completely different things gxk is a story about standing up to oppressive rule and helping others because because it is right kong spends the first half of the film lonely and longing for others like him when he finds them they attack him try to kill him but he pushes on to learn they are under said oppressive rule and his new mission is to save his people from this tyrant and the way this story is told without words outside of the humans giving backstory to connect the two sides is what makes it so interesting
