I love the themes of helplessness and agency, the story of life, death, and rebirth in this movie. It's like she died when her daughter died. There is one shot of her after the fist accident that is reminiscent of a human in a womb, her new self is gestating. The fiery rebirth of the entry to atmosphere, her crawling out of the ocean and "learning" to walk. Incredible.
This is the real message of this film. Her journey is allegorical, and should not be interpreted literally. It would actually be impossible for these events to occur in real life.

Tina Fey and Amy poehler made an excellent joke about this movie at the Golden globes that year. I am paraphrasing but, "Gravity. A movie about how George Clooney would rather float off into space and die than spend time with a woman his own age."

This movie is really meant to be seen in the theater in 3D. It’s a doubly intense experience.

I love the shot where Ryan takes her suit off after getting to the ISS. As she relaxes her body, it naturally returns to a fetal position, and one of the suite's hoses floating behind her looks like an umbilical cord.
Alfonso Cuarón is simply one of the finest directors working today. If you're ever up for a very different movie, his masterpiece, Y Tu Mama Tambien, is totally worth a watch. It's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.

The sound design in this movie is just mindblowing. Whenever we're in space, the only audible sound effects consist of what we would feel through the spacecraft hull or the suit. When we go inside Ryan's helmet, the only sound is her breathing and heartbeat. Everything else, explosions, collisions etc, is instead a part of the orchestral score. So brilliant!
hearing you guys discuss at the end made me realize something as well. this story works because its at its core a survival movie. this set up and story could work just as well in the wilds of Alaska or a deserted island. it being in space clearly adds to both the spectacle and how many threats there are, but the idea of persisting and over coming challenges is a fundamental story we all can relate to at some degree.
The amazing thing about this movie is that for 95% of the time, the only parts of the screen that aren’t CGI are their faces.
Easily one of Alfonso Cuarón’s breathtaking films from the atmosphere, to Sandra Bullock’s performance and the ending which I got Goosebumps.
But massive credit goes to the cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki who reunites with Cuarón after being the cinematographer for _Children of Men_ and because of his work on _Gravity_ it landed him his first Oscar which soon followed by two more Oscar’s through his contributions in _Birdman_ and _The Revenant_ which is incredible winning two more times, and I can’t imagine anyone but Emmanuel winning an Oscar 3 ceremonies in a row.
Lubezki is a total genius - 109 Awards from 147 nominations... He worked with Cuarón since 1991 on "Sólo con tu pareja" .
Gravity in IMAX 3D was a hell of an experience. 😱

The ending scene is an allegory to the human evolution: how we started in the water, like the frog and eventually we crawl out to water and finally walk on our feet. CUARON is a FANTASTIC director.
Also life coming to Earth from space by a burning space debris most probably symbolising astroid containing life to enter Earth.
Clooney is so calm and soothing in this movie to the very last. all the anxiety and panic and his voice comes over the radio and you settle right down. i assume that was by design. absolute master class in casting and performance.
the mark of a movie star is someone who can change the entire mood of a scene by just being on screen.
And real astronauts are like that. When in a context like that, you have to realize that if you panic you will die. Suppressing the panic is essential to deal with the situation. You deal with the situation, then you can panic later. I'm never really surprised that people in aerospace do not panic. Look at Sully and see what Sully Sullenberger went through when he crash landed his plane in the Hudson, or Apollo 13. First Man is a real tribute to the calmness of a pilot like that. Neil Armstrong was the ideal that NASA looked for when they were looking for the commander of the first moon landing mission. He goes through the worst disaster in space up to that time in Gemini VIII, crashes his training simulator (essentially a jet engine with a frame around it) survives that and goes to the office and does the paperwork. Cloony captures that calmness in his performance and really is a very accurate astronaut.
I love the juxtaposition in that, too, regardless of anything else.
One of the best movies set in space I've ever seen. The cinematography is stunning, the atmosphere is amazing, the visual effects are very good, and Sandra Bullock gives an amazing performance. It’s also a film about self-acceptance and confidence in such a clear, no nonsense, refreshing way. Fantastic film!
Before seeing this movie for the first time, I was thinking "I like Cuarón, but I really don't get why he choose to do this movie... judging from the trailer it looks like a tech demo and not much more"... And then Ryan says "I had a daughter" in this vulnerable, heartbreaking voice, like a confession, and suddenly I'm just tearing up in the theater, out of nowhere. This is the moment I realized Gravity much more that a cool spectacle or a thrilling survival flick. The movie is technically brilliant, don't get me wrong, but it's its emotional core that truly makes it a masterpiece.
To answer your question: though it _looks_ very realistic, the movie actually takes a ton of liberty with real-life stuff (for instance, taking off the space suit is extremely complex, would easily take 30 minutes and couldn't even been done by one person alone). You can find many videos who will dissect what is right and wrong in this movie, but to my eyes it's really not the point, because Cuarón wasn't trying to shoot a documentary. He was _telling a story._
A story about a woman who lost contact with life after losing her daughter and who now is just drifting in life like she's drifting through space. The very first shot of the film, this brutal, overwhelming silence, that's it: the emptiness of Ryan's life, the total absence of human contact, of life, of anything. The whole movie is a metaphor for a woman overcoming grief and depression, until the very end: this scene where she finally gets out of the capsule into the sea, and swims up and takes a big breath... It's shot like a birth. She even has to learn to walk, and the movie ends with Ryan taking her first steps in her new life (with a triumphant, empowering score).
I'll stop here because this comment is already too long, but yeah, this movie is amazing, and almost every detail, every shot, every twist and turn has some deeper meaning. (Like when she connects with a stranger through radio even though she doesn't speak his language (BTW, a short film has been made that shows the other side of this exchange. I think it was shot by Cuarón's brother.))

I recommend that if you plan on resuming reacting to films similar to _Gravity_ I recommend you the films _Apollo 13, Life_ and _Apollo 18_
Saw this in IMAX 3D when it first released, several times. Not a horror movie, but one of the most viscerally terrifying films I’ve ever seen. Just the vast emptiness and being tethered to safety by such a thin margin really puts into perspective how small and fragile we humans are. Pure existential dread, and I love it.

Aw man, intense is short to describe this movie. When I went to the cinema it was in 3D and to say that I was clinging to my seat is an understatement. That part with the screw floating and coming towards us was amazing and the whole movie was just that moment x100 times more astonishing
I really love this movie. It has one moment which breaks physics, but that's all, and the orbits do not quite match up that well. Otherwise it's completely amazingly well done.
Opening the hatch with no helmet on is actually perfectly legitimate. The capsule does not have a full atmosphere of pressure, but will have about 0.2 atmospheres of only oxygen. The decompression won't harm the occupants much. And handling 20-30 seconds in a vacuum is fine. Not comfy and cozy, but eminently survivable. As soon as oxygen comes back, it's a non-issue.
Man, I only watch this movie once, I remember being scared and uncomfortable while watching it, like I felt the panic of the situation on my skin.
The perseverance of humans is nothing short of amazing.
After watching this movie, I wanted to go out and just lay on the ground. You take granted actually being on land around so many familiar people and things.
Nothing blows my mind like space or the ocean. I LOVE learning about space. It's always so incredible and super scary. It really makes you realise how tiny we are. We're literally a spec of dust, yet we all matter to the creator! Blows my mind! This movie was so well done. My anxiety went through the roof!
I saw this in the cinema alone without knowing the plot, and I am telling you I felt like I was literally falling on the face of the earth when she dangled from the wires and the darkness of space and the dark cinema just made it feel like I was actually in space. It absolutely terrified me, and it's also probably the coolest cinematic experience of my life to be honest.
Oh man did this movie deserve to be seen on the biggest and best screen you could find! It's also one of the home release blu-rays that actually looked great still in 3D with a good 3D TV.

Another film I'm sad you couldn't see on the big screen, which really amps up the tension and helps you feel the enormity of being in space. The year this film was nominated for Golden Globe awards, the amazing duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were hosting (and they should just really host absolutely everything, IMHO) did a great joke about it, which went something to the effect of "Gravity is nominated for Best Picture this year. It's the story of how George Clooney would rather float way in space and die than spend another minute with a woman his own age." The reaction was amazing and they cut to a shot of Sandra who was laughing and clapping. While it's not science fiction, Cuarón's film "Roma" is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. I wouldn't watch it for a reaction, but it has incredibly gorgeous black & white photography (there's even a coffee table book of still frames from the film with additional b&w photos) and there's one shot that's basically a long tracking shot into/over the ocean that blew my mind. Even Spike Lee in a Director's Roundtable video with Cuarón asked him how he did it.
I saw Gravity in IMAX 3D recently on re release and it was freakin amazing especially in 3D it was so incredibly tense and immersive
This is sort of film about the basic hardwired caveman instinct to survive transported to the most techonoloical advance setting.
now I've said that, I kind of would like to see a prequel of a Neolithic women (who you see burying her child in the opening scene) being separated from her group after a cravass falls to pieces. Can have the same music but with traditional instruments

This film won many oscars, including the one for visual FX. My buddy worked on it, he has a 1/200th share of an oscar.

I have to say that Stella has got one of the best thought about the movie. Like no one think about this movie like this or at least not one from i met or talked with about this movie.
Really you are amazing Stella and i loved your reaction specifically because you were paying attention to what into Ryan's character more than what happened around her and that is very good observation.
Other than that the movie was a delightful dish that keeps you thinking many days in a good way, not like 2001 Odyssey which was Iike all you said a server punches in the head that may cause lack of understanding or thinking.
The shots where she finally gets into contact with someone on the radio, and it turns out to be some random amateur broadcast, speaking a completely different languages and singing a lullaby to their baby. That never fails to me so teary eyed. What an intense but wonderful movie!
I saw this film 3 times in the theatres. It was, without question, the most spectacular, engrossing, and truly cinematic experience I have ever had in a movie theatre seat. I'll never forget it. I walked out of rhe cinema each time going "this is why humans make movies."
If it gets a re-release to cinemas, I encourage any and all to go see it.

Ed Harris, the voice of mission control in this movie, also played Gene Kranz, the "Failure is NOT an option" flight director in APOLLO 13. Also, I know they can't really make a sequel to THIS, but would love to see someone do a futuristic space station movie where something similar happens, and it becomes a survival thing. I loved how s**t got real SO FAST.

One of the biggest films in the history of October and almostv100 awards exactly (including 7 Oscars and 1 Golden-Globe).
The biggest film for the careers of Bullock, Clooney and filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron.
Robert Downey Jr. almost played Clooney's role and bowed out during pre-production (couldn't handle it).
A true Sci-Fi masterpiece that I witnessed in IMAX during opening weekend.
Such an incredible experience of what it's like between Earth and the stars.
To deal with constant danger and survival was astonishing.
The way Nobu and Stella reacts to viewings connects with me. Would love to see them do a stream together. Not meant to slight anyone.
Watching in 3D is an experience like no other.
The Kowalski that comes to my mind is the one from Ren & Stimpy. The giant ex-con that they adopt who only wants to eat and drink meat. lmao Also seeing this in theaters was WILD. Literally "Stress: The Motion Picture".
One of the scariest movies I've ever watched. This is true "eldritch horror" to me - the uncaring, unfeeling, perfectly morally neutral properties of the universe we live in. We may like to frighten each other with campfire tales of ghosts and goblins or imagined horrors after death, but space is far more terrible. And REAL.
Our planet and our species' capacity to care, to think, to make art seems, from everything we know, to be an extreme outlier. Even if we're not the only ones, we probably might as well be given the distances involved.
We have ONE spaceship. And we're destroying it.
You should watch the making of extras. They invented new effects tech to make this movie which took about 5 years to make.
I watched this on Imax, had no choice but to sit in front. Was disappointed to be sitting that close, but after watching the movie, sitting in front was the best experience. It was like riding a long roller coaster. However, me and my friend couldn't walk for 30 min after, but worth it.

I’m not gonna lie. As someone who FEARS space, the first 15 minutes had me SO anxious I had to skip to your discussion to see who survived😅. I haven’t seen the actual movie. But I am now.
I remember seeing this movie in 3D in the cinema at the time, the crowd reactions were awesome, and the part where her tears floating in front of the camera, you felt like you could touch them!
I couldn’t do that, just by watching the movie I can’t breathe! I cried when she woke up and he wasn’t there and she made it. 😢
At the end of this reaction, Stella is discussing the strength of Sandra Bullock's character coming from within as opposed to attributing it to some personal connection which other characters in other movies would do ... "I must survive to make it back to my ..." fill in the blank. And that was when it hit me:
Sandra Bullock's character was just as untethered on Earth as she had been in space.

The “we keep talking” line in the beginning was a smart way to justify having a character alone in a movie can keep the audience engaged in “conversation”.

Survival is the simplest of concepts yet the most intriguing as the act of survival in conditions like can turn a person inside out so everything about them is exposed. People are usually so closed off so when there are no restrictions and everything is open … you never know what’s going to come out.
I saw this in theater in 3D. It was the most amazing 3D experience i had in my life as far as a feature film goes.
TRIVIA: At one point, Ryan catches a radio signal from somebody on Earth; as they don't speak the same language, they can't communicate.
Alfonso Cuarón's son, Jonás Cuarón, shot a short called "Aningaaq", which tells the story from the point of view of that man on Earth Ryan was talking to. In this short, you'll learn about the man, the dog, the baby, etc. you only hear from Ryan's side of the story.
Saw this is in theaters back in 2013. Was an insane theatrical experience but a great movie.

My friend got seasick from watching Gravity in 3D in the theater. The visual was stunning, and the immersion of the 3D effect was on another level. I can’t wait to re-experience the movie once Apple Vision Pro becomes affordable soon after a few iterations for a spacewalk in my living room, lol.

i saw this in not imax but the step down from that when it came out with my mom and cousin. The entire theater was so damn tense the entire movie but it was absolutley gorgeous.

This was a spectacular experience in IMAX. It's a technical masterpiece and a visually stunning film. I was just never able to swallow the story. Everything seemed to happen to set up another cinematic heart stopping moment. It' a beautiful looking film. But I was never able to suspend disbelief and invest in the characters.

Every time I see this movie I wonder if she is actually in space or if it is just a dream or a metaphor for the journey in life this woman went through with having her daughter, losing her, and then having to finally move on with her life. The actions and scenarios she went through in space seemed to be analogous to what someone would go through in life with the 5 stages of grief. Either way it is an amazing movie technically and emotionally.

I watched this movie in the theaters when it came out. I had been anticipating it for years ever since I found out it was being made being a Cuaro. Fan be aus elf Harry Potter and Children of Men. I was not disappointed. I was so exhausted at the end when she steps foot on the beach haha!
I'm very glad I got to see this in the cinema on a huge screen, it was an extraordinary experience.
The only thing that pulled me out of the movie for a moment was the loosing Clooney part. I was confused because I didn't see the drama. Once in equilibrium a small tug would have been enough to slowly float Clooney back to Bullock and the ISS. But it was a good story moment.
The movie was not only for IMAX, but 3D and Dolby Atmos, so the experience at theaters (and yes, still at home with a great 3D screen and complete, not emulated, Dolby Atmos home theater); the movie was THAT GOOD that it’s the reason it won SEVEN Oscars; the CREATED News techniques for filming, lightning, etc., actually after Gravity have come MANY space movies that used everything Gravity teached them, James Cameron, Wenceslao told by Cuarón how this movie was going to be told him it was technically impossible, and Cameron didn't stop saying how much he admired Cuaron because HE DID IT! it has a 96 rate at metascore.
Watching this in IMAX was a trip! Incredible directing and cinematography.
One of the small details I love about this movie is every time they are in a vacuum there's no sound. Because sound doesn't travel in a vacuum. So that scene where George Clooney opens the hatch and everything goes silent and then when he turns the oxygen back on and the sound slowly grows is a great detail.
I felt like I was in space when I watched this in the theater
I’ve always felt Gravity somehow didn’t get the get the credit it deserved when released. It’s really one of the best space movies made.

14:51 THAT is a massive fear of mine! I've injured myself preventing toddlers from falling and hitting their heads. I caught their head in my hands and I ended up falling onto wooden beams. I'd do it again though to stop accidents like that or to stop the child from getting injured! Watching 15+ toddlers playing outside, on equipment is always stressful!!! 🥴🫥😬😵💫
When this movie first came out, I watched it on an IMAX screen in 3D. Wow, just wow - I felt like I was right there with her, which made it even more intense!
Monsters, aliens, demons, cultists, whatever, nothing is as scary as space itself ready to kill you for the smallest mistake.
This and Apollo 13 are two of the most tense films I've ever seen because of that fact.

One of the scary parts of this movie is that it’s absolutely based on a real idea: the scenario of a chain reaction of colliding space debris destroying everything in its path is called Kessler Syndrome, and it was theorized back in 1978, when there was far less junk up there than there is now.
The score of this movie is the uncredited star. Up until the “landing is launching” sequence on the Soyuz, there isn’t even a rhythm to it; it’s just slightly dissonant tones ratcheting up the tension. Then during the Soyuz and Tiengong sequences it becomes more traditional action movie stuff…then re-entry begins and the whole thing just rolls over you like a wave.
There is a lot of material on the DVD about the danger of space debris and how it threatens space travel. There were also two actually incidents around that time that were dangerous.

Great reaction gang! Most space movies have some sort of artificial gravity - which we don't have a clue how to really do. Floating around is going to be how life in space will really be.
My parents took me to see this movie in the cinema when I was 11 and I hadn't seen it since until today. All I remembered was Bullock and Clooney getting stranded somehow, Clooney gets left behind and then comes back (but not really) and her crash-landing back to earth. That, and it being the most tense movie I'd ever seen (and probably the first thriller I'd ever seen). Re-watching it now just in parts with you guys I still felt so tense even knowing the outcome, and now getting to see the crazy film-making going on was nuts. I probably never would have re-watched it if it weren't for this video, and now I have a much higher appreciation for it (though I am still a liiiiiiiiiiitle traumatised by it).
Sandra Bullock is such an unsung action movie actor. She's great. This reminds me I didn't watch The Unforgivable yet.

Just a quick comment. I believe the 'wing' you were referring to on the Soyez(sp?) was just a solar panel.
Saw it in a cinema and my takeaway is that I never before (nor after) saw a movie so relentless. This was as close to a rollercoaster ride as humanly possible. The only breathers were those fleeting moments before another plunge down. It. Just. Never. Stopped. It might not be the most scientifically accurate movie ever, but man, wasn't it a thrill.
This was released in imax 3d. A lot of people threw up from the realism

45 seconds of vacuum is survivable for a human. We know because of a vacuum chamber accident.
Any large pieces of debris probably hit the ground, but the Earth is surprisingly empty even with billions of us, so chances of a direct impact harming a person is slim.

I remember when this first came out. Mum and I watched it in theaters, in 3D. Shit was INSANE. I'll be honest, it was terrifying watching it that way. But it was also really cool, and I'm glad I got the experience. They also had it SO loud, that our seats rumbled. Making it feel like we were there. I've always had a bit of a fear of space, but at the same time, I love Astronomy. I both fear and love it.
I hope one day they bring it back into theater in 3D again, so more people can experience what I did. Definitely something I will never forget nor regret doing. :)
