    Some call this one of Disney's worst films, but I'd say it's one of their most underrated. And you think it's surprisingly dark now? They actually had to remove 12 minutes of scenes that were even darker. A portion of it was found and showed a guy's skin melting off. They probably made the right call.

      I loved seeing this as a child, but you’re right. This was the final box office failure before the Disney renaissance.
      On the one hand, their following movies turn Disney into the modern power house that it is. But on the other, they did dark fantasy really well in this movie. Had it been successful, then Disney could have really varied their story telling style over the years.

  • @MrSnitchley

    It's hard to understate how badly this movie flopped in the '80s. This was back in the day when people thought cartoons were strictly for children, and doubly so for Disney cartoons, so when this film came out, parents freaked because it was so dark and gruesome. If Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg hadn't taken over as President and VP of Disney right then, it's likely the studio would have shut down the entire animation department.

    • @mstorrboy
      @mstorrboy Před 8 měsíci +5

    • @MrSnitchley
      @MrSnitchley Před 8 měsíci +4

      @@mstorrboy There's a great book called Disney War by James B. Stewart about Eisner's tenure at the studio, and it begins with The Black Cauldron fiasco. The board was ready to shut down the animation department when Eisner and Katzenberg took over. Instead Eisner hit upon the idea of creating a TV division that would keep animators busy while movies were in pre-production, then he and Katzenberg took the animators on a retreat where they brainstormed the ideas for Little Mermaid, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

    I loved this movie as a kid, even if it scared the crap out of me as a kid. I did get more critical though as I got older (Taran is insufferable) and then I read the books, but I still love it. "The Chronicles of Prydain" are written by Lloyd Alexander, who was inspired by legends like King Arthur and wanted to create his own. This movie uses bits and pieces of the first two books in the series, "The Book of Three" and "The Black Cauldron," which is why at times the story seems to be lacking details. I highly recommend reading the book series, because you'll get the full story of Taran and Eilonwy, and the country of Prydain.

      Another bookseries of his that would make an awesome movie or movies is the Westmark novels - the Wikipedia article says the country it's set in is supposed to be Not-France, but IIRC Alexander said it was meant to be one of many small kingdoms and princedoms of the divided Germany of the 15th through 18th century. Which explains why the main character can cross it in a few days and not weeks.

    Also, it has one of the best voices for a Disney Villain ever.

    I rarely find myself coming back to The Black Cauldron. Not because it’s a bad movie or anything. I do find it interesting enough to watch from time to time, just not as often. This film is kind of a black sheep in Disney history, being heavily edited and what not, but it has some interesting elements to it like the books it’s based on and some of the characters like Gurgi and the Horned King.

  • @StarShadowPrimal

    It's actually based on the first 2 of the 5 books of the Chronicals of Prydain that were kind of mashed together, which meant it really rushed through and simplified a lot of story elements and characterization. The first book, The Book of Three, had it's own arc and really introduced the characters before the second book The Black Cauldron even started. They also merged 2 villains into 1 (technically 3, since the Horned King was just Arawn's warlord).

It really surprised me how over the years it became known as the movie that almost "ruined Disney" due to it being so dark and scary for little kids. I just think it was ahead of its time, honestly. Although Don Bluth drew a few uncredited scene for the Black Cauldron before he left to start his own production company which. made The Secret of NIMH that has a very similar artistic style. Later on, Bluth made An American Tale with Steven Spielberg and the iconic The Land Before Time series.

    Black Cauldron was the first Disney animated film released to use CGI, however I think a lot of what you guys thought was CG actually wasn't. For example all the smoke effects were real footage of dry ice mist, and the stormy sky I believe was an optical effect but I can't find confirmation of that. From what I've read CG was mainly used for fire, bubbles, Eilonwy's orb, and the certain shots of the cauldron. The film was pretty much half done by the point they decided to incorporate CG. One of the producers had seen the clock tower sequence being worked on in The Great Mouse Detective and wanted that team to do some effects for Black Cauldron.

    the rough cut after the goons started running from the CB was one of the cuts made to the film, in that sequence some were mauled and some were turned by the fog, which by the way was live action achieved by using dry ice, this film also used some computer graphics for many of the little details like bubbles and balls of light.

    I kept reading and rereading Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain as a kid! Just, five books, over and over again, the incredible adventures of Taran Assistant Pigkeeper, Princess Eilonwy, Prince Gwydion, Dallben the Enchanter, Fflewdurr Fflam the Bard King, and Gurgi the link between men and beasts! The books are terrifying, gripping, beautiful, funny, and surprisingly sad. I'm 42 now and when I'm sick I still read The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer, and The Horned King! I've NEVER seen the movie, I didn't know it existed until last year, but the animation is GREAT. It reminds me of Rats of NIMH, American Pop, and Wizards.

    The animation looked so good because this is when Don Bluth worked for Disney. IIRC, this might have been the film that caused him to break off on his own. There was no CGI in this film, as it was LOOoooong before the concept of CGI. I think Beauty and the Beast was one of the first Disney films to really use CGI. Once the film flopped, Disney basically buried it and that's why it's so hard to find or even hear about. There was the Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour in Tokyo that ran from 86 - 06 and featured an animatronic Horned King from Black Cauldron in the climax of the ride.

    • @EChacon

    Disney had a bunch of innovative stuff in the 80's but I found that in each instance they often not 'commit' and try to 'disnify' it. Ie. The cute talking dog that does not belong in this movie or the comic-relief robots in The Black Hole. They keep remaking their successes but I've always thought it was these movies that *could* have been classics that should be given a second chance (other than Song of the South ;)

    notes from the books: In the books Dallben has sticks with symbols or letters on them. When he places them in front of Hen Wen she points with her nose to different symbols, that Dallben then reads to determine the prophecy. There are two groups of bad guy soldiers. The cauldron born, and the Huntsmen. The Huntsmen travel in small groups. when you kill one the others gain the dead one's strength. Eilonwy is quite a snippy girl in the books. Dallben is an enchanter. The books are inspired by Welsh mythology.

    • @Johnny_Socko

      Right, I don't think that was done here, but man Disney used that technique a lot from around the mid-1960s until the mid-1970s, when they thankfully got out of that phase. That was my least-favorite era of Disney feature animation; they still had the "Old Men" working there, but Walt was gone and the budgets were slashed, and it showed in the resulting movies. (My other least favorite Disney era was the Mike Mignola period, when all the characters had square fingers for...reasons.)

    I loved that you both got to see this one. I saw it in the theater when it was originally released. I remember mostly waiting in line for it and later it being a little scary. I was only six. But the event of being in a theater and all the colors on screen was what I remember most. I didn't really follow the story really, I was overwhelmed just being immersed in the cinema experience. The musky smell of the popcorn, the stick floors from all the spilled soda, and trying to see over the head of the person in front of you. It was a pretty small theater but to me it was enormous. This movie didn't do very well at the box office, if I remember correctly, to justify the big budget. Also, I think Don Bluth had already left Disney with some of the other animators so it put a ton of pressure on the remaining animators. Bluth made a few epic movies but my favorite is The Secret of NIMH. The animation in that movie is amazing too.

    Fflewddur Fflam was probably my favorite character in the books. He was petty king of a small cantrev with little interest in ruling that spent most of his time as a wandering bard. His magical harp produced lovely music, but when he exaggerated or colored the truth the strings would snap with a twang. The accusing, one-sided conversations he had with the harp for judging his words too harshly are so funny. Magical items are rare and precious in the books, so when the chief bard Taliesin offered Fflewddur an enchanted instrument he jumped at it, not realizing it was actually an ironic punishment.
