As far as I understand, most of the stuff in the movie is scientifically pretty accurate. The biggest inaccuracies are probably the storm in beginning that caused the whole situation and the Ironman flying in the end. The atmosphere on Mars is so thin that even a high speed storm wouldn't cause much damage, but they had to have something to leave a man stranded, otherwise there wouldn't be a movie. And trying to steer your flight with a hole in your suit is very, very difficult, so he would have probably ended up anywhere but the ship. But a great movie and a nice reaction video!

Perchlorates dissolve easily in water, so if you have sufficient water you can carry them away in it pretty easily, so if we imagine a step of him rinsing the soil out before planting it'd be fine. Of course, the perchlorate issue in martian soil was actually not yet known when Weir wrote the book, which is why that isn't mentioned anywhere.
The book that this movie was based on (by Andy Weir) is just as good at explaining some of the technical things about space travel and also just as humourous.
The actor was ready to lose a lot of weight for the last part of this movie. But the movie's producer finally said no, because he felt that this would be putting his health at risk. So, instead, they used CGI and various camera tricks make it LOOK like he was half-starved.

It's jaw dropping. Some other films you will love: "AMELIE" "PLEASANTVILLE" "ARRIVAL" (one of the best Sci Fi film ever... again more science-based, realistic version of making contact with aliens It's brilliant), and "CHILDREN OF MEN" >>>. Great reaction guys. This is very accurate in terms of science. The only thing that is grossly inaccurate is the storm that caused the problem. The atmosphere is very thin so even if the wind can b very fast it does not carry the same energy as it does on earth. So that was exagerated...wouldn't be a story without it. A lot of people don't know that part of the growing crops is that he used all the micronutrients he brought for experiments on the first round so when the greenhouse decompressed everything flash froze killing all living matter instantly. That is why he could not start again. I loved this movie, the book is even better. Andy Weir is the author of the book. By the way, Project Hail Mary is great too. It is hard science fiction in terms of accuracy of the science, but the the story is much more fictional but I have listened to it on Audible at least 5 times. I enjoyed watching your energy and physical reactions. Your comments were intelligent, made me think a little and funny at times. Really had a good time watching this.
Potatoes have plenty of vitamine C. The Irish(through necessity because of the Brittish) basically were healthier than most Europeans by living on the potato and milk.
There is a difference between dirt and soil. Earth is the only place in the near Universe that has soil. Soil is dirt with nucleic acid (DNA). Where did DNA come from on Earth .

Matt Damon wanted to lose the weight for the role but as it was unhealthy the director convinced him not to so its just CGI

Also the perchlorate in the soil would mean he couldn't grow the potatoes.

I read a "the martian" fanfic and they incorporated that problem.

Astronauts and Cosmonauts have to be smart and physically fit to do this job. They are incredible.
