  • Nintendo may not want us to know what's inside that mask, but can it be figured out anyway? Time to theorize.
    If you liked this one, there's a followup you can see right here about the Fierce Deity:

    ---
    If you were wondering where I've been for the last month or however long it's been, I was working on this on-and-off the whole time (and Spore is broken again). It started getting rough by the end since my computer remains average at best to this day and loading the entire project every time I wanted to work on it started to get difficult. It eventually got to the point where I could only work on it for about ten minutes before the editor crashed. I wish I could have gone into even more detail on some of these things and touched on a couple other topics during this, but it was getting pretty bogged down and lengthy as is. I really underestimated how difficult this particular topic would be to cover.
    A sort of elephant in the room here is that this one actually contradicts my Cia video. I considered trying to fit the two together so they both make sense, but that wound up being a road block in the idea. Part of the fun of theories is that they don't have to work together, and as long as they're not too implausible, it can be interesting to look at things from a different perspective. In fact, being able to look at the game in different ways is part of why I like it so much. Regardless though, just remember that this was all for fun. I'm not pretending this is fact or anything, just a new way to look at things. Hopefully, you enjoy.

    If you were about to comment about the manga being the explanation, I would like to address that first. While they were made by Nintendo, they were made after the fact and elements from them do not affect the main series. There are numerous instances where they directly contradict the games, and should be viewed as their own, separate canon. There are minor things, like Majora giving Link the Fierce Deity mask for no real reason, but also major things like an iteration of Link carving the mask himself; while that's an interesting plot point, it doesn't really make sense in reference to the games since there isn't enough information given, meaning you could assume pretty much anything and it most likely wouldn't have any more evidence than any other theory. As important elements like era, world rules and detailed origins are missing, as well as the overall presentation of the Majora chapter being very vague, I would argue that backstory took inspiration from old myths and is meant to be more of a legend. Sure, assumptions could be made, but it's difficult to quantify something like that when many important details are left unclear.
    While the manga should be viewed as its own canon, that doesn't make it worthless information. It might be possible to theorize about on its own, and it still stands as an interesting reinterpretation, but things presented in it do not apply to the games.

    • @andrex1456
      @andrex1456 Před 7 lety +17

      That does make sense, though didn't Hyrule Historia count them as canon? So, which is the real canon? Could it be possible that the manga explanation is his own destroyed psyche?

    • @R7LPs
      @R7LPs  Před 7 lety +29

      The events depicted in the game and manga don't really add up in a way that would make sense, and I mean that beyond things like inconsistencies between games. If Majora was a dragon of some kind, I'd imagine that would have played into the game somehow. While the manga was written later, it could have been retconned with the 3DS port, as they updated a number of other things with it. I do like the idea of the manga being more of an artistic representation, as you suggested, since that would nicely clean up the discrepancy issue between the two stories by making one more symbolic than literal.

    • @andrex1456
      @andrex1456 Před 7 lety +5

      True, true. To be honest I haven't read the manga in quite some time nor have I done nearly as much research as you have so I do believe your theory has more validity in game canon than the manga's representation

    • @andrex1456
      @andrex1456 Před 7 lety +5

      I mean this guy knows his stuff. So I dunno. Hyrule historia seems to lead you to believe the manga are canon, but certain things just don't add up as he says. This is going into the OOT manga but for example one glaring difference, among many others not only in the OOT but also MM manga, is that Link fights his shadow in Kakariko village, and his shadow is the entity in the well. So whether the book wants you to believe it's canon or not, it just doesn't add up to me

      i need not say more about it. thou i shall, it is stated in the Game that Majora's mask belonged to an ancient tribe that used it in rituals and such. But how many time has passed since what happend in the Manga? The manga origin of the Mask, can be AND should be viewed as a legend or myth about how it was created. What happend to the mask after it's creation? tribe's used it, until they sealed it away fearing it's power and then yeaaars later the happy mask salesman finds it going throu quote ''terrible lengths'' to obtain that mask. And BTW anyone who reads manga and watches anime/plays games knows Manga/game/Anime always diverts from the original source material, but not in a way that it changes everything.

      Termina exists outside of time and would be a pocket dimension in the void, hence Majora's powers. He's the opposite of the three Goddesses who created Hyrule, a being of nothingness and destruction not bound by anything except it's own reality it plays with. And ALTTP Link having the mask would only work if it came directly from Termina, as that is the failed timeline where link dies from Ganon, and this happens after that split in time. I would also believe that the Shadow realm would be akin to Termina as both have similar sources of power, involve dark magic, transformations, and cursed spirits or the dead.

    So, weird thought: Lorule and Hyrule are like weird reflections of each other, Lorule having a darker twist to things.
    What if the Interlopers/Twili originally came from Lorule with Demise (separate theory, that), bringing the Fused Shadow with them. Meanwhile, the Hyrulean version, Majora's Mask, was found to be too powerful, and annoyingly sentient, and locked away.

  • @literallywhy6162
    @literallywhy6162 Před 5 lety +94

    Here’s a hot take:
    So, the war that created the Twili. People from Hyrule were sealed away in the Twilight Realm and became the Twili over time-in game these people are only referred to as interlopers.
    Interloper can be defined as someone who is in a situation or setting that they don’t belong in.
    Consider this, then: a group of Sheikah betrays the King and joins up with the people who were, in the time period around OoT, loyal to Ganondorf-the Gerudo. This is somewhere where they don’t belong, working together with a different tribe.
    They try to take the Triforce, and together, the Gerudo and Sheikah who participated in the war are sealed away in the Twilight Realm.
    Then, over time, they’re physically and mentally changed, as well as having children together, resulting in a new life form all together, with its own traditions, architecture, and art style.
    Perhaps, many of them even forget being anything other than Twili.
    (This could even be the source of the Yiga clan. We know in BotW that the Yiga have been around for at least 10,000 years, maybe even longer, so it could have been formed by the traitors who managed to remain in hiding after the war. This isn’t a statement on timeline placement.)
    So, while the Twili are very different than the Sheikah...is it that much of a stretch to say that the war happened because a faction of the Sheikah defected, they were sealed away, and over a long period of time they were changed, they evolved, due to the harsh, dark environment of the Twilight realm? I mean, we’ve seen fish turn into birds, and children turn into...tree...people...
    With that being said I agree with the rest of this theory as a whole. We also don’t know exactly when the Fused Shadow was created, only that it’s Twili related, and the Interlopers had it BEFORE they were sealed away. To the Twili, it’s ancient, and unlike anything they themselves have created in the Twilight Realm.
    Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

    1) If you REALLY want to know what Majora's Mask is, take a closer look at it. Do you see it? It's a HEART with spikes coming out of it, it's a symbol of pain / despair.
    2) Skull Kid is a foil for Link. Skull Kid is so depressed over his giant friends ignoring him, that he's going to throw it all away despite Tatl & Tael being there for him. This is a reflection of how of Link is so depressed over Navi leaving him, that he's practically throwing it all away, despite all the friends he's leaving behind (not just child Zelda, but every friend he made in Ocarina of Time).
    3) The Happy Mask Salesman is based on Shigeru Miyamoto, kind of like how Stan Lee created J. Jonah Jameson as how everybody else in the office saw Stan Lee as, and Jack Kirby was worried about new owners devouring Marvel that he created Galactus who was a character that literally devoured worlds.
    ...also, not only is Tingle supposed to be the Termina version of Link, he is also a reflection of the player (a 35 year old who wants to pretend he's a boy dressed in green running around having adventures)
    imgur.com/a/pKRk552
    Also, if you take a closer look, the Fierce Diety Mask, Majora's Mask, and Odalwa's Mask are all from the same "set" it seems. They've all got two curves below the eyes, and a weird curving shape above the area between the eyes.

    Thos is pretty interesting. Honestly back when I was a kid playing it on the N64, long before I ever thought about timelines and what not, I always assumed it was someone that was sacrificed by the unnamed tribe and sealed within the mask in the name of power. I assumed a kid or teen because he acts and thinks like a bratty child that has likely been abused. They were sealed inside the mask so the wearer could temp gain their powers to use in those hexing rituals that were mentioned in MM.
    Being, a ritual sacrifice gave the child immense power. Eventually as it was used, they became more and more aware, leading to them realizing just how much more powerful than their captors were. Angry about being betrayed by friends and family and only given attention when being used, it started to get angry. As the anger grew it started use it's new awareness to try and rebel in an attempt to break free. Fearing the worst they locked it away for who knows how long (cent I assumed,) which made it longer and more angry. Eventually being locked away with nothing but it's own mind as company, it thought and thought about it's state, leading it to go bat shit eating insane. Everything became irreparably warped as their original moral compass was already skewed due to being a child/teen. As for the similarities in the moon, I didnt think that it cared about the skull kid as much as it used his problems as a way to explain its feelings as it didnt know how to say it itself and it gave a way to express it (it used the images of things it had encountered recently to base things off of sort of like how a brain needs a visual history to create a dream. It may no longer remember the faces or exactly what happened to it due to the isolation. Such things can cause distorted memories. ) it wanted to play becaus it was a child and it wants to make friends but at the same time is mad at everyone because they'll just leave anyways (like an angsty but super psychotic, teen.)
    Or at least that is what I assumed when I was a kid. If you cant tell I loved to make up overly complicated stories when I was little. Lol you're theory I think is do much better. Haha

    "Powers it definitely does have: teleportation," I wouldn't say definitely, because it was on skull-kid and skull-kids can disappear like frikken ghosts. They could do it in ocarina of time too. "Telekinesis" But the moon is an entity, face and everything, so I was under the impression all the mask did was turn it malevolent, like how it turned the dungeons by awakening other things as malevolent. "Matter and life out of nothing" grey area. Rest of the stuff I can agree with easily enough.
    Then it's called Majoras mask but that doesn't mean Majora is in it. They use the sages seals to stop Ganon but they don't rename them to the Ganon seals. They also establish in Skyward sword that the link style heroes and Ganon style champions will rise in every era to face each other. After Majora/kid robs link, takes a special pleasure in mockingly playing his ocarina and after clearly escaping waits to curse link further before leaving. Also since all the different Ganons seek the power of the goddesses, the triforce power and in OOT he gets one third, since Majora seemingly has all three powers, could be one of the versions had the full triforce when they were sealed away. Would explain the power leaking out through the seal simply by way of the mask being handled.

    Just to add to possible evidence that Majora is Ghirahim; Majora gives Link the Fierce Deity Mask, turning him into what looks to just be an older, albeit slightly colour-altered, version of Link. It also allows Link to fire sword beams en masse. The Link that fights Demise and Ghirahim is an older Link, who is capable of firing sword beams. The Fierce Deity wasn't a real entity, it's what Majora thinks the original Link was. A monstrous villain, clearly godlike in his power, who couldn't be stopped and wouldn't rest until his opponent was destroyed.

    The thing about majoras mask not bearing much resemblance to other twili technology other than the eye
    The eye, and the fact that it's a mask, would indicate that the fused shadow is a later creation, using majoras mask as a prototype. Throughout twilight princess, you learn through both the light spirit and midna, that while the twili were dangerous at first, they became peaceful over time in the twilight realm. It's possible that the twili's ancestors created the mask a great deal of time ago. They feared it's power and sealed it away, and over the course of tens or hundreds or even thousands of years, their technology grew and adapted, while the mask had been lost, stolen away by adventurers, or the mask salesman. Eventually they tried to create a new weapon to fuel their ambitions, the fused shadow, utilizing both new technology, and ancient techniques that had produced majoras mask. As a result, the fused shadow was a bit of the best of both worlds. While powerful, it wasn't nearly as destructive or chaotic. Either the proper techniques and resources were lost to time and they _couldn't_ produce an equally powerful tool, or they had learned from their mistake and intentionally made a weapon on a scale they could control. Or possibly both: perhaps the technique to create the mask was abandoned and made taboo because of it's destructive nature

      I was thinking the same thing. Since he brought up the fact that the mask was colorful and didn’t fit with what we saw in Twilight Princess, it could also be argued that the mask was made before they were banished. Therefore they still lived in the world of light so their creations would have had color and, once they were banished, over time their clothes, art, etc. became more subdued in color. What we saw in that game is the results of a culture that evolved to the realm that they were banished to. It also makes sense that the mask was made by them as they are the only race that’s actually banished. The Shika are the guardians of the royal family so clearly they’re not banished. The Twili also seem to be the only race powerful enough that the goddesses feared.

      Just a thought on the first thing you said, the ancestors of the twill some of the first generations to be stuck in the twilight realm could have created it for the purpose of Revenge. They later became peaceful people but at first they could be sour and would want to have the people that got them stuck to pay for what they have done to them, creating the mask and some how sending it back to the light world to cause havoc.. hence the eye and the ancient look like you said... also the feeling of loneliness that it has would resemble some one being left behind or traps in a timeless place like the twilight realm probably felt like(at first at least)

    Nice theory but I have one complaint.
    If Ghirahim is indeed sealed in the Mask, then why could he became stronger than is former master?
    You said it yourself:
    Ganondorf + Majora's Mask = nearly unstoppable
    but
    Demise + Ghirahim (Sword Form) was beaten by Link?
    There are also two other tribes who vanished long ago in Termina, the Garo and the Ikana and we don't know to much about them beside the great war.
    In my theorie Termina was cursed by the three goddesses during the great war, as the Ikana tried to reach the sacred realm through the stone tower to obtain the triforce. After "flipping" their world upside down and transforming Termina into a parallel world, the Ikana reached the deepest of "Hell" instead of the sacred realm where they find the mask.
    They used its power to win the war, but the mask became stronger for every soul it took and destroyed both tribes.
    The goddesses have to made sure, that Majora couldn't break the seal and came Hyrule, so they made the four giants, one of each species, a Zora, a Goron, a Deku and a Human. These 4 were friends with skullkid but had to leave cause of their duty.
    Well and the rest is nearly history, I guess... :D

      Honestly this is a hunch but... Ganondorf and other beings have shown before that they can grow in power after long periods of time. These time periods are spent years upon years later generations even. These beings become too powerful for their containment and that is how they are able to escape or communicate with the outside world. Look at Ganondorf in Twilight Princess as he was able to grow strong enough from his containment to were he is able to appear as an astral being only an aura in the shape of his head is able to make it through when at other times like not long after he is first contained he is nowhere to be seen. What if Ghirahim who is literally Demises right hand man could have possibly had the same traits.

    Majora's Mask is literally a mask, no specific entity lives within it it besides itself. But it came to life anyway, likely in a way similar to Teddie from Persona 4, but instead of already being alive before meeting humans, it came to life through the interactions it had with humans, the hexing rituals. It probably even enjoyed being used by people to hex other people, but perhaps this tribe freaked out when the mask started acting on its own. This caused some bitterness within the mask, to be rejected by the people that had once before been it's friends. Or at least, if the mask didn't know what friendship was then, it had learned what rejection was.
    Another part of this is the nature of what a mask is. What makes a person who they are? It's obviously more than superficial appearance, but our appearance is still a way we communicate to others about what we are, and what our intentions are. Our face shifts to reflect our mood, and we adorn the rest of our body and our surroundings with items as an extension of our face. But our mood is not always the same, and neither is our face. We choose different decorations, feel different emotions. Are we then a different person after such a change? I would say no, but the idea of a mask arises from such a conundrum. A mask can be used to conceal who we are, but it can also be used to reveal our thoughts and intentions in ways we otherwise could not. Whether our goal is to simply use the mask as a temporary tool, or as a means of escapism, a mask that becomes a lived-in identity.
    Majora's Mask was crafted to hex people, and was made with an ominous appearance suitable for such a task. But it stopped being a mere tool when it came to life, and now it is an identity that lives-in itself. It came to life purely through the intentions it was used for, and the feelings of malice that its user bore within themselves. Nevertheless it was still a child, and it expressed itself in ways that an unchanging, static face could not. It was then sealed away by "the bad guys", the people it had thought were its playmates.

      1. It's never explicitly stated that the hexing rituals the mask was used in were targeting people, could have easily been anything else, keeping certain spirits at bay, etc.
      2. How is a mask spontaneously attaining sentience, somehow thinking the people using it in rituals are its friends, and feeling a human sense of abandonment, more plausible than a powerful individual being sealed within an object like a mask, a process which is already well-established canon?

Darkness and Death are fine, there are no mysteries there, but that damn forest... there's something *wrong* with it... What the hell was the Forest Temple originally? Why is there a room with what looks like a pool of blood with a torch sconce in the center? Why are there twisting hallways? Fiendish hands dropping from the ceiling? A creepy basement?
