    Multiple comments about "the Twili don't have masks in their true form!"
    We know, its almost like they are cursed and that's the whole point. I suppose we should have clarified it a bit more. . .
    Another inaccuracy, is that in The Minish Cap the purple element is earth, not wind as we said in this video. Though, Earth is often associated with death both in Zelda and Japanese mythology, keeping the connection to Ikana Valley, which is also very earthen and dry. So that point is weakened but still there.

      Lockstin & Gnoggin Connecting this theory to BotW, what would the symbology mean? There are masks with upside down Sheikah symbols, Agahnim wears an eye symbol with no tear but instead two pairs of triangles, and Yuga appears to have 3 triangles tattooed or painted right under each of his own eyes. What does this all mean?
      Not to mention the true meaning of the word "Yuga" is Hindu representing an ancient period of 4 eras

    With BotW out now, it is safe to assume that the Yiga Clan fit this theory even better than the sheikah. The Yiga are always seen in masks, can teleport, have spies throughout Hyrule, and are a broken off branch form of the sheikah, theoretically.

    One very small thing that hardly matters, but Hilda wouldn't be the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, she would be Power. They literally say that in the game. Yuga, being Ganondorf's counterpart doesn't have Power, he has Courage. And of course Lorule Link, who is revealed in the story which you should totally play if anyone hasn't, is a coward, but he has Wisdom instead. Thought that would be nice to know, doesn't effect the theory too much though.

    Here's a thought: There are only three Triforce pieces, and the fourth "piece" isn't actually a piece but rather the absence of it. Sometimes the lack of something can be just as powerful, if not more, than the actual presence of it. That's why there isn't a holder of the fourth piece; you can't have something that isn't there.

    • @tovarischkrasnyjeshi
      @tovarischkrasnyjeshi Před 7 lety +1

      Are you familiar with Sierpinski triangles? The triforce is a step in the process of drawing that fractal. It's a holy relic; maybe it exists transtemporally across a whole multiverse; the absence in the core (where you get the rule to transform every part of the triangle) representing infinitude - across Hyrule, New Hyrule, Lorule, Termina (I don't buy Lorule = Termina if that matters), the sacred realm(s), the world of dreams in Koholint, whatever the PH whale world was (haven't played it in years), and at every moment in the timeline.

      Dapper Blook - If the fourth piece was represented by the fourth goddess, then it could be the Triforce of Time, which, being the middle piece, links the other three pieces. It explains why the other three pieces are always being represented by new versions of their original wielders... THROUGHOUT TIME!
      Also, as she destroyed her realm's Triforce (the Time piece), it is missing from the whole Triforce, yet the influence it had on the other pieces remains...which is why Link, Canon and Zelda must continue their fight in various reincarnations throughout time: it is no longer possible to break that cycle as long as the Time Triforce piece is destroyed.

      Have people ever considered that the 4th piece isn't a piece but rather the whole of the triforce put together? It's 3 golden triangles that come together and make one big triangle with a hole in the middle. It's the balance required to hold all 3 pieces together. Remember, Ganondorf couldn't hold all 3 pieces when he broke into the sacred realm on Ocarina, so there is some force holding them together and there is a force gained by holding all 3 that goes beyond the sum of the powers they hold individually

    Years and years and years ago, prolly like a decade ago, I remember a friend and I coming up with a very very similar theory (but our version was mostly just based around MsM, Ocarina, and TP, and of course didn't include the more recent releases). The interesting part is that what cued us in to it was something SUPER inconspicuous that I don't think is mentioned in this video (but idk I'm only at the 19:30 mark): In TP, Midna's first reaction upon accessing a shield is to *wear it as a mask*, indicating that for some reason she associates protection with them. Then the whole rabbit hole of the fused shadows stuff began and... yeah. Tbh I think this theory (or at least something similar) is plausible just cuz it's really easy to imagine if you pay enough attention-- if my 11-year-old self was able to see parts of this from the text and imagery, then it can't be that impossible. Kudos, mate!

      I wouldn't nitpick the pronunciation of Hylia. There are so many things in the Zelda universe that are improperly pronounced, calling people out on every little one is just unreasonable. The most common I find is the pronunciation of Gerudo as "guh-roo-doh". Prior to the introduction of the Gerudo race in OoT, there existed two enemies known as Geldman and Geldarm who both existed in desert regions. Romanization of the Japanese spelling of the terms reveals the common root of geld being more accurately spelled "gerudo", thus the name of the race. With this in mind, the proper pronunciation of Gerudo would be "Geh-roo-doh" with very little emphasis on the "oo" and "oh" portions. It should also be noted that it seems the original translation of Gerudo was intended by Nintendo to be "Geldo". With this knowledge, there is absolutely no reason for anyone to ever pronounce the "er" in Gerudo without the short E sound. But people do anyway and that pronunciation is almost universally accepted.

    Why does everyone think terminal as in death when talking about Termina from Majora's Mask?
    I always thought of it as terminal in the sense of an airport or train terminal, as in a waypoint, rather than a final destination.
    This seems evident by Termina Field completely surrounding clock town, which is the central point of the region and the entire "kingdom" (for lack of a better term) being roughly circular.
    In other words, Termina field is a waypoint you must pass through to get to your destination. Regardless of your starting point or whether your destination is clock town, southern swamp, snowhead mountain, ikana canyon or the great bay, you must always go through this waypoit; this terminal.
    The (kingdom?) of Termina is a waypoint on Link's journey to try and find Navi. It's not a destination, it's a terminal he arrives at along the way to his ultimate destination.

    • @guardingdark2860
      @guardingdark2860 Před 4 lety +32

      Even in the sense of an airport or train terminal, the word "terminal" is used in that way because it is the end of something; the end of a train line or plane path, something like that. The word "terminal" derives from a Latin term ("terminus") that literally refers to a stone that marks the boundary, or end, of something. English takes this literal idea of a demarcation of something's edge or endpoint and makes it into the figurative idea of the end of something. Plus, Majora's Mask has heavy themes of death and destruction; it would make sense for the use of the name "Termina" to refer to the destruction at hand.

      Actually, I believe, BoTW only specifies that it had been 10,000 years since the last Calamity-level incarnation of Gannon. People all across Hyrule are aware of different reincarnations of Gannon, like when he took the form of a Gerudo. It is clear in Link's recovered memories that the royal family at the very least are well aware of Link, Zelda, and Gannon's reincarnation cycle, and the mythological roles they fulfill as manifestations of fundamental forces. Zelda is destined to seal Gannon, Link is the Chosen Hero. The thing is, that they should have been the most prepared for Gannon, but the entire Sheika arsenal ended up being instantaneously posessed. The ancient Sheika, who made Pacific Rim style anti-Gannon laser mechs and an incorruptible system of shrines and towers, as well as reality bending technology that fits in the palm of your hand, just happened to forget to Gannon-proof their murder drones?
      If the Sheika had left well enough alone, Link and Zelda would have managed to overcome the Calamity in a direct confrontation, just like they had 10,000 years ago. But then they would've had another ten millennia of "minor" reincarnations before the next Calamity struck, and on and on and on. So the Sheika orchestrated for the kingdom to fall as a "necessary sacrifice" in order to delay the battle for another 100 years. Then they ensure that the memory-wiped Link is set up to find the modern Sheika for guidance, and to train at the shrines and overcome the divine beasts in order to ensure that he is fully capable of properly ending Gannon when the time comes. After a century, Gannon is desperate for free reign to enact chaos. He is terrified of being overcome and having to wait another 10,000 years for another chance to really do some damage. So, as Zelda says in the battle against his final form, Calamity Gannon has given up all hope of resurrection in a last-ditch effort to overpower Link and escape his fate. None of this would have happened without the Sheika to cleverly orchestrate it. To lay low for 10,000 years so the technology is obsolete and impossible to understand, then allow it to be excavated right before the calamity so that Gannon will have an instant army; Link will inevitably fall to them- and what do you know? The Sheika prepared a Shrine of Resurrection which will get done repairing Link just in time for Gannon to break free from Zelda's restraints, one century later.
      I think the Sheika tried to do the right thing. Whether they succeeded or not is not really made clear in the game.

    -There are 4 goddesses
    -Lorule is an early version of Termina
    -The Shieka are the Garo and the Interlopers
    -Zant is the Master of the Garo
    -They are the same people who made both Majoras Mask and the Fused Shadow
    -The Happy Mask Salesman, Vaati and Dark Link all came from Lorule
    -The Sword used by the final boss of Skyward Sword (forgot his name) is the dark version of the Mastersword from Lorule
    -And finally you hint that Stallord is the skeleton of the Inprisoned

    The theory that the interlopers were Sheikah is not new - but it's something of a dangerous precedent to blame all Sheikah for the actions of the Interlopers. It's likely only part of the tribe tried to get the Triforce - since, y'know, by the time of OoT there are still Sheikah protecting the Royal Family, and the civil war happened before the events of OoT.
    We may learn more when BoTW comes out - it seems like the Sheikah are going to be in focus for the game, so we may learn a lot about them.

      @RainaThrownAway Před 7 lety +1

      Haruhi Suzumiya You can't say "no it was this other thing" when the civil war hasn't been featured in any sort of canonical source. We know very little about the Hyrulean Civil War, other than that it was horrible, and Hero of Time Link was born during this time period, and lost his mother as a direct result of the Civil War. That's literally all we know for sure.
      Bongo Bongo probably was sealed during the Civil War, considering he was sealed by Impa. But that doesn't mean that's all the Civil War was about, and it definitely doesn't mean the Civil War had nothing to do with the Interlopers. It's entirely possible Bongo Bongo was created or summoned by the Interlopers to get a leg up during the war. Perhaps they lost control of it - or perhaps they let it loose when defeat seemed imminent, forcing Impa to seal it.
      And I've _forgotten_ more Zelda lore than most people will ever learn. I don't need to be reminded that the Timeline is full of holes, thank you.

    That second shield, the Hero's Shield, is actually from Hyrule(Link had it with him in the begining of the game while in the lost woods). It's a redesign of the original Hyrulean Shield meant for children. You can tell that it is Hyrulean due to the Triforce symbol, which only appears one other time in Majora's mask, at the inverted Stone Tower (But just to excite you, I'll mention that the Lorule Triforce is an inverted regular triforce, so you at least have that connection).
    Also, Vaati is native to the Hyrule of Minish cap. He is a picori (Minish), who used a magical hat to transform himself.
    And as for the title color, the two four sword games had a green title, and both Oracle of Ages (a direct timeline sequel to ALTTP) and the Adventure of Link use blue.
    I really like theories involving Majora's Mask and ALBW, but despite all you mentioned, I can't help but wonder why you didn't mention Clock Town's "royal family" bearing certain royal features (Purple hair, red eyes) or even so much as mention the FOUR giants that are said to have created Termina, each walking 1000 steps in the cardinal directions. I don't mean to sound rude with this, but I figured that my comment might be helpful should you revisit this theory in the future.

      plus its strongly suggested that the dark mirror in 4 swords adventures was made up by fragments of the Twilight mirror. or rather the "dark tribe" and the "interlopers" are one and the same.
      "A mirror that reflects the evil heart of its bearer, spawning demons. it was once used to imprison the "Dark Tribe", who attempted to invade Hyrule, and thus it was hidden inside a temple with no connection to the Dark World. Here's my view on this: On one timeline we have the Sacred Realm get corrupted into the Dark World (Link to the Past), then returned to "normal", at which point the inhabitants have their Triforce destroyed to prevent it happening again (Ganon is still trapped in that realm). Much later, without the Triforce, this other realm turns into Lorule. In a DIFFERENT timeline, immediately after Ocarina of Time, Link sets out into the Lost Woods, where he falls through some sort of portal. That portal could be a time portal as well as dropping him into the other realm. In this timeline, Link has never visited the realm until the very end of time. Ganon was trapped in the Twilight Realm instead of the Sacred Realm this time, but that doesn't mean somebody else (Aghanim, Vaati, etc) didn't grab the Triforce and start the same chain of events. Lorule does have its own version of Link but he's pretty much worthless. Perhaps a past version of Hilda defeated whoever had taken the Triforce and then destroyed it to prevent it happening again, just like in the other timeline. But the events of Link Between Worlds never happened, so the world continued to deteriorate. People gave up hope in the Goddesses returning the world to the way it was, and developed separately from that point on. They renamed the realm Termina, thinking that without the Goddesses and the Triforce the realm was sure to die, but they managed to survive and in some ways even thrive. Then much later the Skull Kid steals Majora's Mask and sets into motion the destruction of the world, and the Mask Salesman ... does "something" (it was never really revealed what) to summon a champion (Hyrule Link) to protect the world and prevent its destruction. You might notice that in Majora's Mask, there is a distinct lack of Ganon, Hilda, and Link... in Hyrule Zelda and Link only reincarnate when Ganon does, so it makes sense that happens in the other realm as well. Since Ganon had not risen during the events of Majora's Mask, there was no Hilda or Link, so they had to look to what they would see as the other realm, or Hyrule, for a champion. As for why that specific version of Link, and not one from the same time as their own ... well, there's a whole set of theories that essentially say that he never made it out of the Lost Woods after returning to Hyrule, so perhaps the spell the Mask Salesman cast picked him as he was never seen or heard from again and therefore it wouldn't change history if he didn't return.

  • @kelldilv
    @kelldilv Před 6 lety +387

    Herein I provide a long comment that demolishes this tenuous theory.
    The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages punctures so many holes in your theory that it's practically swiss cheese. The Goddess Nayru, for awhile, was associated with time. Nayru is said to have bestowed Law to the land, which can easily be interpreted as the laws of time (physics and righteousness, in a sense). Her corresponding piece of the Triforce is the Triforce of Wisdom, the segment that which Zelda (natch Hylia, a goddess that may be seen as a creation of either the three goddesses or an emissary of Nayru, though I admit this point is a bit of stipulation on my part) wields. Her oracle's harp also warps time, which draws similarties to Zelda's harp and possession of the Ocarina of Time. Nayru->Law->Time->Wisdom->Hylia->Zelda.
    Even Farore's Oracle from both Oracle games, who acts as a keeper of secrets, ruins the conflation of spying/secrets with traitors and the Sheikah.
    The Twili only wore masks after Zant usurped the kingdom. When freed they were mask free. Though the Twili and the Twilight Realm is the fan-favourite theory that connects the Interlopers with Majora's dark tribe, there's little else to substantiate this theory (which I enjoy myself) to canon, let alone tethering the Sheikah, even the Yiga Clan, into the mix. Oh, and conflating every realm outside of Hyrule proper is a shakey premise at best.
    The Dark World of a Link to the Past is what happens to the Golden Realm when the Triforce is held by one of malacious intent. This has nothing to do with warping the Triforce proper, rather it's a reaction/reflection to the heart who seeks to use the relic of the gods. Equally noteworthy: in the original Legend of Zelda, Zelda actually BREAKS her piece of the Triforce. This doesn't send the entirety of Hyrule into disrepair/a state similar to the Dark Realm. Instead, the destruction was contained to a (large) segment of the kingdom, which was presumably (I can't stress the word presumably enough) what results in the wasteland of the first game. No masks, no purple, no dark skin, no red eyes, no spies.
    The spies in The Adventure of Link found in some towns (you know, the folks who initially look like your average civilian but transform into monsters that hunt you down) aren't Sheikah (or Yiga), don't have dark skin, aren't red-eyed, don't wear masks, and don't wear purple.
    The koroks all wear leaves as faces/masks and can disappear and reappear, akin to spies. Are they a part of this mask cult too? Another rhetorical question: do I need to get into the fact that the entire series has far more than four races, species, and sub-races? And that the deku haven't been a main race in a long time?
    The 'point' about the Happy Mask Salesman's and Hilda's 'dark skin' is a massive stretch. His skin tone looks no different than many Hylians'. Many Hylians and humans have darker skin (especially in BotW, but also seen in Twilight Princess). The Gerudo are a range of dark skin tones too, as well as the Sheikah themselves. The Sheikah range from light hues, mid range hues, and dark hues (again, even prior to BotW). The Happy Mask Salesman's red eyes can be interpreted originally as a visual cue for his rage, meant to disturb the player. Also, the dark-skinned Rito from The Wind Waker, with their red eyes, have to somehow factor into this straw-grasping logic too.
    Also, Vaati uses eye(s) as prominent symbols, is purple, and has red eyes EXCEPT we know his exact origins: he was a Minish gone bad. However, even before his dark ambitions that led to his range of transformations he was purple and red-eyed. Nothing to do with the Sheikah nor anything to do with a mask cult.
    How does Ganon/dorf and the curse of Demise factor into this "It's the fault of one world and one tribe!" theory? How does the nightmare that plagues the Windfish factor? Dark Link? The evil hearts of humans? Bellum? The corrupting power of the Triforce (especially Power) in it's normal state? Onox and Veran? Malladus? Many commenters, myself included, disproved your use of Vaati as "proof". How does Purple Link factor into the "4 and purple signify a single opposing realm of traitors who use masks and eyes as symbols" theory? His existence alone means nothing to corroborate the theory outside of initial clue sniffing.
    Termina does have religion/faith/spirituality. You yourself noticed their mention of the goddess of time (which could be read as Nayru, or a current Nayru-Hylia amalgam). The mask festival celebrated by the people of Clock Town was meant to celebrate the gods and the harvest, all while giving thanks and asking for a successful year. The four Giants (yep, I'll give you that number 4 is present, but unrelated to your larger theory) are read as gods, if not demi-gods or lesser deities. They're guardians of Termina, of whom the people thank and rely upon. The Zeldaverse is generally a wide pantheon of mostly ambiguous gods of all sorts, with the three goddesses and now Hylia too as the most prominent members.
    The problem with your theory, like most fan theories, is thhat you're using later canon to describe previous games that had nothing to do with current lore. This is called retconning, which to be fair has been a bit of a staple of the series. Clearly this video came out before Breath of the Wild, so I can't fault you for the holes and overlap that game creates to your train of logic, but you did manage to approximate the existence of the Yiga Clan. Kudos for that.
    Anyway, this was entertaining but ultimately isn't convincing. Nintendo loves reusing and overlapping previously used themes, imagery, and mottled lore. This tends to encourage equally mottled, cherry-picked proof for fan theories. It's all in good fun, but can rarely be taken seriously.

      I just had to stop the video at two minutes in as he claimed that the Hero's Shield was Terminan in origin; Link was given the Hero's Shield (a child-sized version of the Hylian Shield) by the royal family of Hyrule for warning them about Ganondorf. Good eye noticing the owl symbol on the shield, however; it's likely a nod to Kaepora Gaebora/Rauru, the sage who watched over Link throughout his journey and even traversed through to the land of Termina to continue watching him. Also, I approve of your pronunciation of Hylia with a soft "y" sound; I have always done the same.

    There is something I noticed about the tetraforce idea. In all of the Legend Of Zelda Series triangles are almost always in threes to represent the goddesses and the triforce, but the old Gerudo Valley symbol has four triangles, I'm probably wrong but Gerudo Valley is one of the only places with four triangles, it's also the place that Hylia supposedly represents. Also, if you look at the symbols for the elements the one for light is yellow with three triangles on it positioned seemingly random, but the symbol for shadow which is purple has an upside down triangle. Just a thought.

    This is fantastic! Whether it was Nintendo's intention to connect the dots this way or not, I love the hypothetical aspect of it all and more so, the foundation on which you built your proof to back up your theories. Love this!
