    I always thought the empty space between the Triforce pieces was symbolic. The emptiness of desire, the granted wish, and the lack of connection with the other virtues. Ganon, with his desire for power, blinding him to balancing his power with wisdom, and lacking the courage for direct confrontation (His constant need to seal himself behind elaborate barriers instead of directly confronting the hero at his weakest.). Zelda and her desire for the wisdom to be a kind and compassionate ruler and to save her kingdom, but lacking the courage and power to do so without relying on the chosen Hero to assist her. And Link, with his desire for the Courage to save everyone, but lacking the power to do so and relying on the wisdom of others along the way. Having Link complete the trials laid out before him in the dungeons, and facing Ganon's minions allows him to to balance and connect all three of the virtues, so when all three pieces of the Triforce come together he is able to fill that emptiness. And how does one fill the emptiness of desire? With a wish.

      I never understood why Zelda ended up with the triforce of wisdom. It's not a wise decision to try to control the power of the gods, and it's also not a wise decision to have Link pull the master sword out of its pedestal when only Link can pull the sword out of its pedestal, basically meaning that if Link never tries to pull the sword, Ganondorf is fucked and can't get the triforce because the sacred realm doesn't open until someone pulls out the sword.

Though I'm bothered by it being so "new". I'd expect something along the lines of the manga, an ancient hero from thousands of years ago.

      @@heylisten4967 it would kind of fit with the story of the Hero's Shade too how he is basically a restless spirit that was the OoT Link. If Fierce Diety is his own kind of restless spirit which seems like he would be since all of Link's transformation masks were restless spirits to begin with then the Hero's Shade could be the grown Link who lived after Ganon's defeat... It even explains the connection with the Song of Healing after you get the Howling Stone... Im personally hoping that BotW 2 expands on all of this in more detail since BotW 1 was so closely related to Majora's Mask with the 4 major temples, 4 beasts, the appearance of Majora and the Fierce Diety's Mask and other things.
      I personally am expecting it to tie in with Skyward Sword with its heavy emphasis on the sky in the newest trailer but Id definitely like to see it also tie in with Twilight Princess and for them to maybe bring back the Oocca Race and explain why there are Zoras AND Rito coexisting at the same.time when the Zoras were supposed to have evolved into the Rito after the flood (Which 100% sets BotW after the flood on the timeline).

    Here's my theory, which comes mostly from Gamtos's theory "Majora's Mask-as seen by Gamtos".
    Majora's Mask was originally created by the ancient tribe-perhaps called Majora-and originally was just a regular mask of wood and paint. No soul resided within. It was empty and lifeless. The ancient tribe who coveted this mask wanted to create an object that could give its wearer great power, but to do this rituals were required. The ancient tribe performed many dark rituals, forcing many unwilling victims to don the mask and suffer from these hexes. With each ritual, the mask itself gained more power. But it was not enough. The tribe wanted more, and so the rituals continued, increasing in violence and quantity. With each hex, the mask itself gained more and more power, and eventually from this suffering-this pain-this hate-this anger-this insatiable desire for power, destruction and suffering-Majora was born.
    In Japan, it's a common trope in folktales that a place or object that is filled with negative energy, such as a grudge or cursing someone, can become possessed by evil. Majora was born from this. It is not so much a single entity as much as it "contains the residual feelings and memories of every tribe member or victim that were involved in the hexes" according to gamtos. This is perhaps why in the final boss fight, Majora's Mask fights in a childlike manner similar to the skull kid. It based itself upon a part of the skull kid's personality, explaining it's childish demeanor.
    Majora's Mask is this evil, that was born from the dark rituals, malice, and grudge poured into it. It is the epitome of darkness, hate, greed and pain. Eventually, Majora's Mask ultimately became even too powerful for the tribe to control, and the evil within lashed out, slaughtering every last one of the tribe members involved, destroying the clan entirely. It used its victims to cause more chaos, controlling them in a way very similar to skull kid. The chaos it caused, this calamity, eventually became so great it caught the attention of the hyrulean sages, who after discovering the mask, sealed it away in the Eternal Darkness so that it would not be misused.
    But what of the Fierce Deity? First off, it's important to know just what a Fierce Deity actually is. The term "Fierce Deity", comes from the Buddhist faith. In Buddhist legends, Fierce Deities are said to be wrathful, terrifying forms of enlightened Buddhas, who destroy obstacles to enlightenment as well as guard confused sentient beings from demons who wish to assail them. The Fierce Deity's Mask's somewhat sinister appearance as well as Link's misinterpretation of the mask as evil matches well with how westerners viewed fierce deities, so much so that they thought that those of the Buddhist faith worshipped demons! However, this couldn't be further from the truth.
    Another thing of importance is the symbolism behind where Link obtains the Fierce Deity's Mask: Under the shade of a large tree in an open field, which matches particularly well with another Buddhist tale where the Buddha achieved enlightenment while sitting under the shade of a large tree while being assailed by distractions sent by Mara, the enemy of all enlightenment. But the only way to obtain this mask is by obtaining all masks in the game(save for the transformation masks) and giving them to the four moon children, who one by one disappear. Much like the distractions of Mara, these children represent challenges that Link must overcome in order to achieve enlightenment.
    The Fierce Deity is not some separate being from Link, not some ancient war god who fought with demon lord Majora some centuries back. The Fierce Deity is Link. Just like how Mara challenged the Buddha to defend his claim of enlightenment through which the Buddha touched the earth and the land itself cried out "I bear you witness!", the moon itself is giving Link physical proof and acts as a witness of Link's enlightenment through the Fierce Deity's Mask, explaining the appearance of the symbol of the moon on his chest plate.
    Aonuma, when asked what spirit resides in the fierce deity's mask, said "The best I can give you is just a suggestion. The best way to think about it is that the memories of all the people of Termina are inside the Fierce Deity's Mask." A Gossip stone in the game also mentions the Fierce Deity Mask saying, "The Fierce Deity's Mask, a mask that contains the merits of all masks, seems to be...somewhere in this world."
    In the game, every mask you obtain is said to be filled with a kind of emotion, kind of like how Majora's Mask was filled with hatred, greed, etc. But this is different. Rather than negative emotions, these masks are filled with positive feelings and memories, such as love, happiness or gratitude, given by those you helped on your journey. This corresponds with the mystical energy in Zelda called Force. Force is a sacred power that dwells in all living beings in the universe, and can be physically manifested through strong emotions, in the form of force gems, gratitude crystals, and the like. The Fierce Deity's Mask is one such creation, created by the feelings of gratitude and love that fill the masks you have collected over the course of your adventure.
    "The masks you have are filled with happiness. This is truly a good happiness." -Happy Mask Salesman.
    This joy, when fused together, created the Fierce Deity Mask, which through it, Link is capable of totally wiping Majora's Mask from off the face of the earth(or moon in this case). But though the Fierce Deity's Mask is powered by Force, Majora's Mask is powered by its polar opposite: Malice. And in Gamtos's words:
    "Malice is energy formed from hatred and despair.
    It is the hatred of the Demon King, Demise, towards everything made by the Goddesses.
    It is the darkness in the hearts of men that fascinated and corrupted Vaati.
    It is the soul flame of pure hatred the poes carry in their lanterns.
    It is virtually every part of Calamity Ganon's being.
    And it is the result of countless hexing rituals of an ancient tribe.
    The anger, despair and insecurities of a lone imp.
    The tribulations of a land destined to fade, where friends can't seek forgiveness, guardians and heroes become powerless, and total destruction is drawing ever nearer on an unstoppable path.
    That is the power that fuels and possesses Majora's Mask."

      I think the game is elevated in that it's an isolated story apart from its scant few connections to Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. Also, Shigeru Miyamoto doesn't really write stories anymore, so if there were a prequel it would likely be out of line with the initial writing philosophy of Majora's Mask. In other words, it would be a bit like how Hollywood is always going back to beloved films and producing inferior prequels and sequels.
      Also, the uncertainty and vagueness of MM's storyline are crucial to its atmosphere and feel.

      I'll admit, though, this theory is very good. I wish they'd make the tetraforce canon. I'd love for BotW2 to bring it up ... So many comparisons were made by the production team between LoZ (which only had 2 pieces, power and wisdom) and BotW that the sequel has the perfect opportunity to introduce a new piece, much like AoL did with courage. Heck, chaos would make sense with the state of the BotW world.

    I believe Majora was not an evil Goddess but perhaps the Mother of the other goddesses. You could call her the Goddess of Chaos but chaos is just change, ultimately she was the goddess of creation. The tribe he spoke of was the beginning of humanity, emotion, love, jealousy and that tribe wanted Majoras power. So the Fierce Diety was the one to Rip Majoras spirit from her power by creating a mask made of a piece of her body, seperating Majora from her power. This action is what released or gave birth to Din Farore and Nayru. Meanwhile, Majora hid within the realm of the masks power waiting for the ironic moment for a hero to arrive and bear the Fierce Dietys mask to take down the evil that had taken Majoras power.
    Honestly Majora is my favorite, there is so much mystery surrounding Majora. The Zelda creators have followed so many other stories and branches in the Zelda timelines except for this one, and i hope they dig more into its lore soon.

Of all the masks that Link transforms into another being/creature, it is the Deku, Gorgon, and Zora, "heroes" in their own right, with regrets. Perhaps the Fierce Deity (perhaps Link's father), had his own regrets, (not truly sealing/destroying Majora, or never meeting son/returning to his wife?) thus allowing Link to help the deity come to peace.

    In my opinion, the tetraforce could only exist when tetraforces of courage, wisdom, and power exist as well. The word 'Triforce' durives from the shape of each Triforce piece and the complete relic being a triangle. So the term 'Tetraforce' would refer to when both the Triforces of Hyrule and Lorule are wielded by the same person. Just look at the Triforce symbol that is unique to the title of A Link Between Worlds. Hyrule's Triforce and Lorule's Triforce form a rhombus, a quadrilateral.

    I think you’re dead wrong, I believe that the fourth piece is from hylia, she is associated with time (obviously) but her virtue is love (just like Din is the goddess of power and is associated with fire)(I think it’s love cause she’s the one that stayed, the one that sacrificed herself to save hyrule and even went so far as to live among them)
    The idea that a god on equal standing to the golden goddesses could be sealed in a mask is ridiculous, but more than that, it screams for the goddess of time towards the end of MM, i don’t think it would ask its lesser for help like that
    if majora is a primordial evil like in Shinto, would he really contribute with his own triforce piece?
    Also i kinda understood that majora was male, which disqualifies him from being a goddess (that was just my understanding though)

    • @detonar-2598
      @detonar-2598 Před 3 lety +2

      As far as i understand it, it doesn't make sense that Hylia has her own virtue associated with a triforce piece. As we know from SS, Hylia is Zelda and Zelda is associated with wisdom and prominently wields the triforce of wisdom in a few games.
      Her association of time is more indirect. It seems to be one of her powers, but none that is explicitely designated to her.
      I agree that it is hard to believe that a deity on par with the golden godesses could be bound to a mask. If Majore would to be considered a deity, he/she would more fittingly be on the level of Hylia.

    While I don't personally buy into this theory, it is definitely well made. Good job Xeno.
    Since this is a topic on gods, I feel it necessary to point it out that the existence of many lesser gods are hinted at throughout the series. The sages of wind and spirit have gods directly involved with their elements, fire and forest also having "spirits" associated with them. In the same Dimension as Hyrule, in the lands of New Hyrule, is a god of light who fought against the demon Malladus, usually mistranslated into English as the spirits of good, whose force gem symbol is also seen on the light Medallion.
    These gods all have some sort of symbol connected to them, and the Fierce Deity follows this kind of by having both a triforce piece and a moon symbol displayed on his chest. While I think the triforce piece is a reference to Link's triforce of courage and the moon symbol to a connection between the deity and the moon, the triforce piece could be the missing "fourth piece" and a display of the power that the deity represents. Take it as you will, and sorry for the rambling.

The fierce deity is the hope and fighting spirit of all the people of Termina in their wishing to live

  • @gensteps923
    @gensteps923 Před 3 lety +2

    Nice video. But i have my own theory, which I believe to be right. My theory is that in the beginning, The three golden Goddesses Created Hyrule and Termina, and two Gods were created beneath them, Hylia, and The Fierce Deity (I'll name him Terminus), each god were to be deity protector of the lands, A third God, Which would later become demise, was created to watch over Lorule. A 4th god, Was created to occupy the space in-between, the nothingness, pure chaos, which was Majora. The third God loved Hylia, but she loved Terminus. Jealous and angry of these things, The god which would later become demise rebelled against the three golden Goddesses and Hylia, while Majora would attempt to rebel against the Fierce Deity. A great battle would ensue, where The Lorule god would eventually fall to the goddess Hylia, cast out as a fallen god, becoming demise, where Terminus, having defeated Majora and sealing his soul inside the Majora's Mask, was also fatally wounded. Hylia and terminus, who were in love, did not wish to separate. So Hylia would Seal away the Fierce deity soul inside a Mask, then she created the Mortal Hero of Hyrule, link, in the image of her Love. She gave up her life as a deity to reincarnate into a Mortal body, the princess Zelda, and Demise, swore to come back in a neverending cycle for revenge against The Golden goddesses, Hylia, and Link. So in essence, Fierce deity wasn't a disgraced god, but a Valiant heroic one, which would serve as inspiration for the Mortal he would become, which is Link and his many reincarnations

    • @nicolaswarren3453
      @nicolaswarren3453 Před 3 lety

      If I'm understanding your reference correctly, you are referring to the bit of dialogue that the Fierce Deity's Mask carries with it "the souls of everyone in Termina" or the hopes and dreams of all the citizens of Termina. If this is what you're referring to, it does not seem to invalidate the theory and may, in fact, be a benefit to it. My main reason for saying this is that the way you receive the FD mask is by doing precisely what Link's father (who the theory states is the FD) would want him to do: be a hero and help those in need. Thus, the mask may only manifest after Link proves he is still the hero he was in OoT and one that can be trusted with the immense power granted by the mask.
      Additionally, the order and balance brought by Link in his journey could be another point in favor of the theory. If Majora truly is the lost goddess of chaos, the "villain" or "antagonist" for their story would be one who stood for order and peace and worked to undo all the chaos that was wrought. Thus, when Majora wishes to play a game of good guys and bad guys, it gives Link the mask of the "villain", the Fierce Deity. One of the few people in Zelda history (according to the present theory) capable of wielding the full Triforce, showing that he has innate balance, who received a portion of the goddess of chaos' power, turning him into the FD, and retaining a portion of his humanity and sacrificing himself in order to prevent Majora from throwing Hyrule into further chaos.

    What a fun theory! It makes for an incredible story. The Soulsborne lore enthusiast in me can't help but point out that Occam's Razor pretty well puts this theory to bed though. There are just too many assumptions here for it to be more viable over simpler theories. Plus, the manga is non-canon. (Otherwise we must accept that Volvagia was Link's childhood pet, and the lore is muddy enough as-is)
    That said, every Zelda theory is pretty much non-canon since they are unconfirmable. Your theory does exactly what all Zelda theories are meant to do: enrich a beloved story and setting. So even if the theory doesn't hold water, it is still worth every Rupee.

    The 3 golden goddesses were described as being all powerful, so if Majora was the 4th, Link, even as the Fierce Deity, would stand no chance!
    If that was the origin of the fierce deity, the 3 pieces would be in Termina, because Link's father would've'd them when he was sealed.
    Majora is probably just the Interloper King imprisoned in his mask due to misusing dark magic & driven insane if it was the Hero of Men, who I speculate is the hero of the sky, that defeated him, while He & Zelda built Hyrule on the surface.

    • @sykune

      The triforce is referenced in a blasphemous way in the stone tower temple meaning those who built it despised the golden goddesses as it has statues that show someone licking the triforce. It's also stated in the story of the giants and the imp. That skull kid lat termina to go heaven so hyrule is a divine land that found above termina. So the stone tower temple maybe a reference to the tower of Babel. And the light arrows being holy flip the tower to prevent anyone from climbing it to heaven.
