    Remember the airless tires are offroad tires, so they're bigger, heavier, and don't accelerate as quickly because of that. I want to see a test of these on a vehicle they were made for, against BFG Mud Terrains or smth else with a similar tread and weight.

      @TheRokkis Před 8 měsíci +2

      We got similar airless tires in our Grasshopper lawnmower. Very expensive but sooo good compared to old tractor type tires. Of course it's not a car but some areas we mow are pretty off-roady so maybe that's worth something. The tire itself has some give by design so it increases the surface area compared to regular tire full of air.
      Also for what I've seen they get softer with use which might help. If they're bad quality I think they might deform or get soft unequally making bumpy ride.

    • @grimfang4
      @grimfang4 Před rokem +9

      Yeah, a weird oversight given they had a guy specifically there to talk about the science.
      The radius and the mass distribution will affect the moment of inertia of the tires, which will affect acceleration and braking. The radius also affects the moment arm, which changes how energy is exchanged (by way of torque) between the ground and the car body through the tires.
      The top speed issue, as far as I understand, is mostly a matter of the bearing friction. Smaller tires will require the bearings to spin faster. There is some inertia/momentum effect there too, where keeping "heavy" wheels spinning at a high speed may be easier than lighter/smaller ones due to that friction.
      And then of course, it's odd that they would include rolling over a block in a timed test, which is very dependent on wheel radius.

      Airless tires will never work, we have been trying for the better part of 100 years, it isn't a new idea, just like all of Elon Musk's "ideas".
      See: czcams.com/video/jQ05RbGa0zM/video.html
      The only way airless tires can work is if there's a world altering materials engineering breakthrough, the way I see it.

    For the airless tires, isn't it the ribs that are more likely to overheat (due to repetitive flexing) rather than the tire tread itself? With the open design, you could dissipate the heat rather quickly with that much surface area exposed and air being pumped in and out when the tire deforms.

    • @Iguana93
      @Iguana93 Před rokem

      Yeah, they said it wrong with the reason for overheating... Air is actually a better insulator than plastic and in a tire, air doesn't "help disipate heat" - the airless tire actually has much more cooling due to its sides admitting cold air from outside. What overheats the airless tires is the rapid flexing and stretching of its spokes and obviously the heat combined with cyclic deformation is what makes the spokes fail. In a traditional air tire, the cyclic deformation is much gentler and air as a "spring material" doesn't wear out. I'm pretty sure the airless tires also impact fuel efficiency - if you have two tires and one of them runs hotter than the other, that means it's converting more of the engine energy into waste heat at the expense of motion. That's obviously the reason why it achieves worse times on the Miata.

  • @Kami892
    @Kami892 Před rokem +4

    those old tires were actually made to be able to off-road because at the time “paved” roads were rare. it made sense to see it go off-road and over the curb the best out of the 3.

    To those in the know, how far do run flats like on some BMWs fair here? Yes they only *should* be driven on for X miles after a puncture, but they do help alleviate the puncture problem temporarily with modern air tyres I guess.

    The key thing I don’t see the future tires overcoming any time soon is the ability to adjust tire pressure to suit auto weight and driving conditions. With current tires I found that I get the best traction when I am a couple psi over recommended on one axle and a couple psi under on the other. On my truck I’ll lower the pressure for sand or snow… None of that can be done with those solid tires.

    • @karlfriedrich7758
      @karlfriedrich7758 Před rokem +2

      It's not quite true that you can't adjust the "pressure" with airless tyres. There are a few versions that do allow that and it's done through adjusting the spoke tension.
      This would have some advantages over standard pneumatics since you can stagger the compliance to make a round tyre more star shaped, effectively giving you more paddle-like effect which would be tremendous in mud and certain situations on sand, even rock climbing. Would obviously take longer since you need to adjust multiple bolts but airing up with a run-of-the-mill compressor takes forever too. Also side note, I'm not quite sure why you're ever over-inflating on the track, that reduces your grip.
      The question is whether that going to be among the first models of these tyres released and I doubt it. I imagine it would be a long way down the line. Off roading is a niche compared to the commuter market. 99% of people never need to air down their tyres, even just in the emissions savings from underaired tyres and the safety benefits of avoiding overaired tyres and blowouts makes airless seem like a good option.

    Puncture proofing isn't the biggest advantage to the airless tires. The biggest advantage is the ability to tune ride and handling separately. Because of the way those spokes work it is possible to make their lateral stiffness and longitudinal stiffness different. So you can have a really soft riding tire on your Miata without losing any cornering ability.

  • @wilmotown

    I like the idea of airless tires. I know they won’t have nearly as much dynamic ability as regular tires but they seem like they make good sense for most cars, although the fact that they don’t brake as quickly as regular tires is something that needs fixed before they can sell them to most consumers.

      22 inch tire multiple by 3.14 is the measurement of how far the trip moves in one rotation
      30 inch tire by 3.14 is more than a smaller tire making the bigger tires have the advantage.

      @@alexislaisney3404 Bigger wheel = higher top speed with less torque. This isn't a problem when you have lots of torque on tap, but it's a Miata. The OP is correct that smaller tires are effectively a lower final drive gear.

    • @AlessandroGenTLe
      @AlessandroGenTLe Před rokem +1

      @@alexislaisney3404 sorry, you're reasoning in the wrong way: it's the engine the source of power, not the tires. Bigger tires = with 1 rotation (from engine power) you move the vehicle further. Since the engine has the same power regardless of the wheels, and the same reduction ratio at the gearbox, and bigger tires = more space at the same angular speed, then either you need more power or you'll be slower. Exactly like a higher gear ratio. And do you accelerate faster in 1st or 2nd gear?

    I think the reason why the airless tires didn’t perform as well as the ‘modern’ tires is because you were using an off-road tread pattern. That type of tread pattern is great for off-roading, but aren’t too great on paved roads, plus they tend to be a bit noisy when driving on paved roads.
