      Someone's always trying to reinvent the wheel or in this case tire.Those open-sided pieces of rubber will be useless in mud in the winter time because when it freezes it's going to drive like it's driving on rims. I thought the legal speed limit in most States was 65 to 80 miles. Why would you need the average tires to be able to go 120 to 150 mph. It's easier for the cops to catch the guy when the tires blow 😁

    You can see good examples of the airless tire on commercial grade lawnmowers. I looked into them for my mower but they’re like three times the cost of a standard lawnmower tire. Maybe someday but not right now.
    I remember on my first car I had bias ply tires, and I used to put winter tires with studs on them every December and would take them off at the end of March. Those winter tires were great.

    F1 race tires don't last a few races. They last about 12-40 laps. (They have different compound tires at each race so grip and durability varies)

    • @richardpowellTV
      @richardpowellTV Před 11 měsíci +2

      Dry weather F1 tires are also very soft, sticky and shed a lot of "rubber" on the track.

    • @migy5031
      @migy5031 Před 11 měsíci +1

      As I’m sure every F1 fan knows, the wheel/tire dimensions are set by regulation. Until a few seasons ago, F1 used tiny 13 in wheels! They had so much sidewall that they handled a significant amount of suspension duty.

  • @pflans2306
    @pflans2306 Před 11 měsíci +19

    One problem with the airless tires is when snow gets packed into the inside groves and freezes. They have to cover the sidewalls with flexible rubber or there going to have serious problems in places where it snows.

      @@garyssimoit does not. It takes a lot of energy to melt the ice and in order to even get any temperature increase you have to start driving but you have just been sitting there for the whole night with your icy tires now how do you think you're going to be driving to get the temperature up? The distribution of ice is not even. Lastly any temperature increases have to take you above the freezing and if not then no ice will melt.

    • @rickwebermusic
      @rickwebermusic Před 9 měsíci

      Yep, they'll definitely need some sort of a non-structural sidewall to prevent this issue. I imagine that would be an easy solution.

    • @D33Lux
      @D33Lux Před 7 měsíci +1

      The airless tires are not rock hard, its rubber so the inner grooves flex and contribute to a smoother ride. One thing for tire manufacturers to consider is to use a telfon infusion with the rubber, as the car moves the ice will crack and fall off as the tire flexes with the weight of the vehicle. Centrifugal force will also expel the ice from the tires.

    Thank you for a great informative video, Scotty! When we lived in CT (now in Fla.), I used to always use winter tires on our vehicles, switching back to all season or summer tires in the warmer months. Specifically, I installed Bridgestone Blizzak tires for the winter, mounted on steel wheels, the best winter tire I have experienced. The one drawback was that the softer tread compound resulted in faster wear, so it's imperative that you take them off as soon as winter conditions are over. We lived in an area that was at a higher elevation and with some steep roads, both of our cars were AWD, the winter tires were a huge advantage for winter conditions. The airless tires offer a lot of advantages, but I wonder what happens if, probably inevitably, debris, stones, etc., gets caught in them?

    Came to Scotty's channel because I need new tires for my corolla (I live in NH) and there are so many choices I wanted to see what people liked and disliked. Dealership (I am shopping around) recommended Yokohama AVID GT (I think that's what is on the car now). I only have 46000 miles on the car but 2 of the tires have been plugged. About a year ago I drove over a small wrench .Drive a lot in Mass where the roads tend to s--k. Some tire manufacturers are having buy 3 get one for a $ tire specials for October which is why I am looking now.

    Michigan driver here. Winter tires are absolutely a good idea here. Our insurance rates are the highest in the nation so one accident will jack your insurance by 40% over 4-5 years.
    Because of this the cost of a set of rims and winter tires is a no brainer. Much safer and way cheaoer than jacked insurance for 5 years.

    Just FYI, F1 tires (or tyres in F1 speek) only last a few laps. The actual tire life depends on several factors, such as track surface roughness, tire prep & use. As well as the compound (C0 being the hardest, while C6 is the softest). There are also two wet tires referred to as the Intermediate and Extreme.

The ones I get I usually get all 4 at the same time and with the closest (and sometimes better) ratings for noise, rolling resistance etc as possible. I never have any handling problems. Being an ex driving instructor i don't drive hard. Are we being snobbish with "I run mine on ContDunlMich X9000 Supersport Dynamic Thrust tires "? I'd honestly like to know.
