    I have a 2016 ford explorer sport. I towed a 2019 little guy max. The trailer weight is 3010. I did use an equalizer weight distribution hitch with sway control. It made all the difference in the world. I towed the trailer from VA to Central Florida and it felt pretty easy. I used premium gas because I got better mileage, and I used the ECHO Smart bluetooth brake controler. I wouldn't tow in the mountains but it does well on the flats. I found that sway wasn't bad when I wasn't in tow mode even at higher mileage.

    I have a '16 Sport and I've towed my snowmobiles in a enclosed trailer adding up to about ~2000lbs. While I understand it's well below the towing capacity, it's unreal how it pulls like there's nothing back there. One of the most pleasant towing experiences I've ever had, extremely laid back and comfortable. Only issue I have is that I haven't bought mirror extensions yet, until then it's a pain to know who's behind me.

    I have a 2015 XLT with tow package and with 3.5L engine without the Ecoboost. We pulled a 4000 pound RV trailer with weight distribution hitch with sway bars. Pulling was ok no sway, but seemed to labor keeping 65 MPH on highway. Would not shift out of 4th gear aely with or without tow button turned on. I thought that staying pretty much under 5000 lbs would be OK, But now am thinking the Ecoboost engine is needed. Would that be your thinking? Got about 9 MPG for a 100 mile tow.

      @jaybird9988 Před 3 lety +4

      It's not about the engine. You shouldnt tow anywhere close to 5000lbs in either vehicle. It's your drive train, suspension, and brakes that will suffer the most abuse. In most cases, especially this guy...you will exceed your payload or hitch weight before getting close to 5000lbs. Do the safe thing like 95% of all experts say, do not surpass 80% of your vehicle's tow capability. And, be sure to consider your passengers and equipment as part of your payload.

      Don’t follow this guy’s example. He’s overloaded and towing unsafe. You’re more than likely going to be way over the max payload of your explorer towing 4200lbs with five people in the cabin + food, gear, clothing, fuel, etc. Even if you’re able to somehow keep the load within spec, you really don’t want to be consistently pushing the upper towing limits of your vehicle. You really need something like a half ton pickup this kind of load.

    • @jaybird9988
      @jaybird9988 Před 3 lety +3

      Ya dude, this guy is a moron. Do not tow a trailer that size with an explorer. Especially with 5 passengers. He is well over his hitch weight, and maxed on payload and towing capacity even with a wt distribution hitch and travelling light. Dont put your family's life, and the lives of all the drivers on the road at risk. Most experts say not to exceed 80% of your vehicle's tow capability in order to operate safely. If you plan to haul all your gear and passengers in your tow vehicle...then you really shoudnt do more than 70%.

The big bummer with the explorers is the small gas tank size which results in limitations of distance needing to fill up. Curious what you and others are seeing. The boost from the turbos helped give the extra power to prevent excessive down shifting. Id say check with your Acura dealer on recommendations and see your RV dealer and ask if you could hook up a travel trailer and test your towing before buying just to see if you feel comfortable towing. Towing capacity is one thing, how about your vehicles gvwr? The explorer weighs around 4,900lbs, and weighs 6,160lbs. With a hitch weight of 5-600lbs you only have about 600lbs of cargo capacity for the explorer, take away your weight, passengers, luggage, gas, you're pretty close to overloaded if not already. Have you taken it to a cat scale? Also your steering and sway can be ratified with a properly setup weight distribution hitch

    • @FerreedomOutdoors
      @FerreedomOutdoors  Před 3 lety +3

      We are doing a cat scale in two weeks on our next trip. We do have access to a large scale and have weighed all of our gears and belonging in our camper. We added between 224lbs and 265 depending on what we are packing. We go pretty light on our trips and shop once we get there. We also do run an equalizer E2 for weigh distribution and sway. Our sway is very very good except once you get to 70+. I also think the installation of our air assist for the rear will also work wonders. Fortunately a very good friend on mine is also a ford master mechanic and helps with some very good insights on towing! Although close in weight I believe we have taken all of the proper steps to assure we are safe and keeping our vehicle running at optimum performance.
