  • here is a step by step video of how to installed a factory OEM hitch on a 2011-2015 ford explorer part #BB5Z19D520AA .This video also shows how to install the factory 7 pin towing wiring harness. Here is where you can buy this class 3 trailer hitch. The hitch will include the mounting hardware, and the hole cover for your bumper after you cut out the hole.
    If you are wondering, i used WD40 to spray the muffler hangers for easy removal, and then i used brake cleaner for easy install and then brake cleaner spray quickly dries out and removes any grease and then it will sit in place tight.
    There are different OEM witing hardnesses with 7 pin connectors, for example, i have just back up sensors, but there is also backup sensors option and the parking sensors options, with backup park assist sensors the harness is different and has 2 big main connectors, best way to do is ask your dealer if you need one or the other if you dont know what you have. I bought my wiring hardness used on ebay. If you dont need a 7 pin connector there is just an add on wiring hardness.
    You would have to order this Hitch from a dealer, but here are some different hitch options available on Amazon amzn.to/2jxu5se

    Thank God they make hitches that dip down now so you don't need to cut and remove your bumper. This is an insane amount of work to put in a trailer hitch.

    Thanks so much for posting this vid. I just got done installing this on my 2014 Explorer. I ordered the parts from Tasca Parts out of Rhode Island. Genuine Ford hitch, both pieces of the cover, 4 pin wiring harness and shipping, all for around 300 bucks. It comes with pictograph instructions but this vid was so much more informative. The Ford instructions indicate there is a cut line molded into the inner side of the bumper cover. I used that line to cut and it left a smaller cutout which left a lot of room for any cutting errors. The end result is the same. Dealer parts and installation runs anywhere from $1100 - $1500, so thanks again!

    The video is excellent and helped me complete this job. I really appreciate having great detailed videos like this to work from.
    I want to point out that my 2013 LTD located in an area that has roads treated with salt in the winter months. This caused lots of rust and two of the frame bolts broke on removal. After applying all kinds of heat and liquid wrench the bolts would not come out. Had a mechanic weld a nut on the end still no luck . Finally had the hitch welded to frame in the area where the bolts broke. Thanks again!

      Was it the two passenger side exhaust hanger bolts?
      That's what happened to me, and a bunch of redditors at /r/fordexplorer
      Apparently it's not always corrosion. Those bolts may have been cross threaded at the factory.

    I already have one of these installed, and was looking to use the 4 pin for some aftermarket lights to wire up to. Since mine is a 14 and has the 4 pin connector for the tow package. It looks like a good plan on paper. This was helpful to see where I can run the wires with the rear bumper off, since I want to mount the lights on the hatch anyways by the license plate. Should be able to get a 4 pin long enough to run the wires around the inside of the rear hatch and wire them and hide it inside the door trim.

    Thanks for the video! I just don't understand about the wiring.. I take it if you want to have backup sensors and a 7 pin or 4 pin connector for a trailer, then you have to buy a part that has both the connectors for the trailer and the backup sensors in one package? meaning that if you are installing a backup trailer after-market then you need to remove your backup sensors and install the new wiring package.. meaning you will have an extra set of backup sensors left over?

I can find the 4 pin wiring harness (BB5Z-15A416-A), but what do I need to get or do for a fully functional 7 pin? I only have the backup sensors like yours. Do you have the part number of the used connector off of eBay?

      I think I found the correct part -- Wire Harness - Ford (DB5Z-15K868-D). The Description states:
      With trailer tow, without blind spot monitor, without id card. What is the ID card? There is another part that comes with the id card, but listed as compatible with the 2013's only. I'm assuming that the 4 pin wiring harness (BB5Z-15A416-A) is not required if the Wire Harness - Ford (DB5Z-15K868-D) is used? Anyone know if that is correct? Thanks.

    why did you take off the bumper cover? I installed a hitch on my explorer and never had to do that.

  • @ribosomes1
    @ribosomes1 Před 8 lety +1

    Towing over 2000 lbs is not supported on 2011-2015 Explorers unless this 52T tow option is installed at the Ford Factory. I was highly disappointed to learn this. A special transmission and oil cooler is also required. If you just want a class 3 hitch than there are easier bolt on versions that sit just below the bumper.

    • @andbudzi
      @andbudzi Před 7 lety

      Matt Ribosoms
      ford recommends 2,000lb, but you have to understand that cars and SUVs are greatly underaited in US. It will have no issues towing up to 3,500lb. Reasoning to buy OEM vs aftermarket is that this hitch is much stronger due to extra attachment points.
      Explorer Sport without tow package comes with everything that tow package does minus rear bumper rebar and tow haul gear selector - but you can use manual mode instead (if towing over 3.5k lb)

    • @ribosomes1
      @ribosomes1 Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the comment. My main concern was that non-factory installed tow packages would void any warranty related problems. It was disappointing to discover that an OEM tow package was not available for supporting up to a 5000 lb. capacity. I received a letter directly from Ford Corporate explaining that for 2015 Explorers the 52T Tow package is only installed upon assembly. I do like your work around though!

      If you have a V6 engine and you install a aftermarket hitch an a 7 pin conector you’ll be good to tow up to 3500 if your pounds. There’s not a lot of information obout the towing capacity on these explorers but remember the limit it’s 4000 but ford tecnitians told me. Keep it under 4K 3500 will be the the best and always with a WDH. Hopefully this helps

    Do not do this. It will ruin your transmission. You need a class III tow package from the factory which has a engine cooler and other components that allow you to safely pull the weight. This video should be titled how to blow your transmission

      It’s actually fine unless you start towing on hills

      You're right... if you don't abide by the weight restrictions of the hitch. If your toting a dirt bike or 3 you're perfectly fine.

      Calm down. Some of us only need to tow a motorcycle or something small. Nobody is going to tow a camper with an explorer🙄
