    If you didn't know the size of the receiver end of the trailer, and if it was a trailer you hadn't used before, how would you know what to do and if it was compatible? (This may be the case when looking at used trailers for sale). And also can you put a 2 inch receiver on a 1.5" ball? Or do they have to be exactly the same size for both parts?

    You’re past your tongue weight capacity…trailer weighs 4300 lbs x 10% = 430lbs plus two propane tanks at 60lbs plus that bike rack plus weight distribution hitch that is at least 60lbs plus battery for a minimum weight of at least 550lbs tongue weight. You’re probably closer to 600 lbs tongue weight…this is a prime example of what you should not be towing this size trailer with.

  • @politicallydisgruntled.7977

    Wrong. It doesn't come within you're towing capabilities. 4300 lbs dry and 5000 towing capacity only allows 700 pounds for passengers and gear. So, hypothetically two people equals 300lbs, add towing hitch with weight distribution and sway 100lbs and one is left with next to nothing for gear, groceries etc, And, forget about towing with anything in the fresh, grey and black tanks.

    As someone who has pulled 100K, 3 loads a day on highway and back road, if you inspect your equipment and maintain it properly and drive correctly, maintain proper following distance so you don't have to jack the brakes, running close to the GVWR wont be an issue, and no DOT trooper will give you a rash of shit if you go over a scale, they just say "Drive safe and have a nice day".

  • @garyvanderhoeven808
    @garyvanderhoeven808 Před 10 měsíci

    4300 lbs dry, looks like he’s got a ton of stuff in that trailer. The weight of that trailers is closer to 6000 lbs. way too much for that explorer and a family of 6 he’s way over payload capacity of the SUV. This is a seriously overloaded set up that is not safe. Being over weight jeopardizes your insurance and any warranty on the vehicle. Do not claim dry weight when you can see nobody goes camping with an empty trailer including this one. You are only fooling yourself, Do not just pick and choice the lowest number to make you feel you are right. It’s dangerous for your family and everyone else in the road. This is not a safe nor legal with the weights set up

    Safety?????? 2 6 volt batteries are 130 lbs 2 30 lbs propane tanks are 110 EQ hutch is 75 lbs That’s over 300 lbs without the trailer. Your hitch weight is closer to 900 lbs for a max factory hitch weight rating of 500 lbs? This is far from a safe towing set up.

    Please do not take this guys advice on towing! The only thing he ever mentions is dry trailer weight and vehicle tow capacity. He never mentions GCWR, front and rear axle max weight or vehicle payload. There is no way he is not over payload and gross combined weight rating. Folks should understand, you can't just say I am rated to to 5000 lbs. and the trailer is only 4300 pounds. Please do not think this is okay! Watch videos and learn or find someone who knows and can teach you how to know if you are towing safely. Lastly, I seriously hope he has upgraded to a proper vehicle for this camper or sold the camper.

    • @davidp6839
      @davidp6839 Před rokem

      I'm not sure what everyone on here watched, but he clearly said 4600 lbs as it sits and noted close to vehicle tow rating multiple times. While closer than some are comfy with, this certainly isn't unsafe, particularly given he is clearly aware he's close to the rating (brake controller adjusted properly, etc.).

  • @nmsauditor1a950

    I regularly pull my dual axle utility trailer grossing close to its 7k lb max( with firewood) and my f150 did it no problem, so I was surprised when I brought home our 24ft 4k lb travel trailer and it handled terrible. I was bouncing up and down and swaying all over the interstate. I now know that the the campers tongue weight is more than my utility trailer because of the relative position of the axles and that I need a weight distributing hitch with sway control. I'm also gonna invest in some timbren ses bump stops because my truck would benefit loaded,unloaded, towing,or hauling. I dont lack for power or braking,but certainly was caught with my pants down otherwise.
