  • This segment originally aired on November 6, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.
After nine months of secret collaboration, a global team of over 380 investigative journalists released the findings of one of the largest troves of leaked documents in history last week: the Paradise Papers.
The investigation, shepherded by the same team that released the Panama Papers, offers unprecedented insight into the clients and business activities related to a Bermuda-based offshore services law firm called Appleby.
VICE News Tonight on HBO went behind the scenes from Day One of the Paradise Papers, with exclusive access to the investigative reporters working in secret across continents to expose an unseen world of offshore accounts, hidden money, and financial maneuvering at the highest levels of politics, business, and finance.

      @christurnblom4825 Před 6 lety +14

I think you massively oversimplify the issue by using a single sentence and words like "brainwashed" and "fake news". The research I've done leads me to the conclusion that this and the Panama Papers is the global elite fighting with each other. This definitely appears to be a managed leak as apposed to independent people just trying to stand up for what's right.
I have to admit the Great Britain and other EU nations seem to be much more experienced in deceiving experienced people than the U.S. is. When I see the U.K. doing questionable news stories, I usually am compelled to research further and further & often get lost in the maze of directions it leads. When the U.S. do this, it often takes lass than 15 minutes to find the numerous connections to the rogue elements in our non-military intelligence agencies and the usual suspects in the private sector. Britannia has a few centuries more experience in hiding things from it's people and it shows, they are much better at it than the U.S. is.
I don't have time to get into this thing extensively since I don't do this stuff for a living but do be perfectly candid, I still try to look at all these "tax cheats" as individuals. I don't really care if people find loopholes in tax laws because I'm very anarcho-capitalist. At the same time, I'm very anti-fascist, in that, if someone gets special treatment from a government, which benefits them financially, I still consider them as owing a debt to the society in which that government resides. So I would look upon how much they pay, much more critically. In case this is confusing, to elaborate on my interpretation of "fascism", Mussolini once described fascism as "corporatism" which is what we refer to today as crony-capitalism.

I'm disheartened by the comments below, because it shows how little faith and stock people put in investigative journalism nowadays. I'm thoroughly impressed by their commitment to privacy and security. They are dedicated to this work and thoroughly picking through the garbage of the financial records, seeing which leads appear fresh at first sniff, and then really picking up the stench of criminality and corruption in others. They don't release raw data directly for the protection of those not implicated in criminal ties. They confirm and corroborate with foreign journalists to gain insight and ensure accuracy. They announce their findings to the parties in question before publication to make them aware of the investigation. These are all the admirable qualities of ethical journalists, not hackneyed bloggers and opinionists who come up with a narrative first and then see what cherry-picked data fits their picture. They have picked up on some very large corporations doing some very questionable things with vast sums of money, and while it seems convenient to pick them out, it's what gives the reader a tangible, identifiable entity to read about. I don't know who the Russian oligarchs are, or the Saudi investors in the Clintons and Bushes, or what the former prime minister of Iceland did while in office, but I can definitely see the harm in companies like Facebook, Google and Apple accepting investments from shell companies owned by authoritarian regimes. We all want greater transparency in government and bank lending. We would all like to know that our leaders and elected officials and even our entertainment stars are working effectively and ethically to prevent abuses to our global finances.
Yet here I am reading multiple comments applauding these leeches for successfully avoiding to pay their fair share. That their selfishness and greed are models to be replicated, when the reality is, there's no way any one of us would ever amalgamate that level of wealth that they stash away, and that's entirely the point. We're looking into the pocket books of the 0.001% of the world's population, and it's that small inner sanctum that they wish to preserve while keeping all others out. But they create this illusion that one day, by "hard work" or sheer dumb luck, you could one day aspire to be so wealthy. But it's all a facade. That's what these documents prove - that they haven't earned their wealth, they're stealing it and hoarding it away.
An essential part of living in a capitalist democracy is having everyone pay in to the same system, to support our health, our security, our economy and our environment. Part of the contract for accepting the benefits of living in a developed, prosperous nation is that everyone pays a portion of the cost to provide those basic needs and human rights is by paying taxes. And the vast majority of citizens do, but not those who earn the most, and not the corporations who earn money off everybody else. They are breaking the rules of that contract. They should be made to pay for it.

The reporters who worked on this seem to be overwhelmed by the amount of data that they came across. Seems likely that there are still a ton of stories in those papers, but piecing it all together is kind of a mind boggling exercise.
I think the main takeaway is something most of us already knew: the rich play by their own rules and don't contribute much to society. What's really crazy to me is that so many people do not demand transparency. For example, Trump supporters are perfectly happy to vote for Trump, even though he refuses to release his taxes. This is the kind of stupidity that allows the rich to (easily) get away with not paying their fair share, and have an inside track when it comes to influencing politicians.

Depends how they get their money. If it's via commerce, then they are job creators. They can be both, and most likely are in this first case, because any company will dodge taxes wherever possible. it's just common sense.
If they get their money from other ways, such as drug lords, etc, then they are no benefit to society as a whole, and are just a leach.

I was not paid to vote this down. This piece is bordering on propaganda. I intensely dislike Trump and his family but this story has an agenda. It focuses on three Russiasn Oligarchs and Russian this and Russian that with very little focus on where the $Trillions in just one hedge fund came from. There are other oligarchs much richer and more influential than those three Russian minnows. Maybe (not accusing them) these richest families in the world might want to hide their vast fortunes: Walton, Mars, Koch, Wertheimer, Cargill, MacMillan, Dumas, Johnson, Hearst, Hoffman-Oeri, Bezos, Gates, Cox, Dassault, Jobs, Thomson, Lauder, Rockefeller and Rothschild. There are 2600 billionaires in world yet VICE, of which Disney owns 26%, seems to think the Russian link to Cushner is than most important aspect off this story. Ignoring the collective massive tax evasion that we the ppl are paying for. Get a clue, use some critical thinking.

Taxes that not only improve our infrastructure, education, healthcare, etc, but would also lead to better jobs and standards of living for all of those sectors. The middle and lower class wouldnt have to pay high taxes if the billionaires actually contributed to the taxes. They will probably never use most of that money which is the saddest part. If you had enough money to hire the law firms that advise the rich on their taxes, you could do what they are doing...it's legal in the tax code. That's what the lawyers get paid huge sums to poor over and find.

You know who will go down for this. The nobodies. A few people will end up prison but the main officials, the big wheelers and dealers. They will get off scott free with maybe a few fines IF that

      BeamingSplendor - You nailed it.
Just like slavery was not about racism in the US. It evolved into that, but it didn't begin with that. In fact, most of our divisions are about trying to gain the advantage over perceived competitors - from the individual to the group.
People wanted to make a profit on the backs of a reliable work force and they turned out to be West Africans.
They tried it with others, but the agrarian Africans offered a perfect solution: sun safe skin, mostly healthy populations and an abundant resource. it's cold, indifferent and immoral, because profit was the bottom line. It still is. Nationalism is not a thing.
