Pontiac offered the 1977 T/A 400 cu in (6.6 L) with a single 4-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor RPO W72 rated at 200 bhp (203 PS; 149 kW) at 3600 rpm and a maximum torque of 325 lb⋅ft (441 N⋅m) at 2400 rpm, as opposed to the regular 6.6 Litre 400 (RPO L78) rated at 180 hp (134 kW). The T/A 6.6 equipped engines had chrome valve covers, while the base 400 engines had painted valve covers. In addition, California and high-altitude cars received the Olds 403 engine, which offered a slightly higher compression ratio and a more usable torque band than the Pontiac engines of 1977.
From 1977 to 1981, the Firebird used four square headlamps, while the Camaro continued to retain the two round headlights that had been shared by both second generation designs. The 1977 Trans-Am Special Edition became famous after being featured in Smokey and the Bandit. The 1980 Turbo model was used for Smokey and the Bandit II.

One of my all time favorite cars.. and you did a very nice job on the build.
Thanks again Hisham!
Nice color choices sir. Great tips for the grille and decals. Looks like it came straight from the 80’s high school parking lot. lol 😆
Thanks a lot Clifton!
I can hear this playing from the Radio Shack speakers on the back deck:

I love the flashing part
"If u cant just snap that off maybe models aren't for you" hahahahahaha
Right? Some folks act like flash is a huge problem. Grab the Xacto and spend a few seconds on it, it's a non-issue.
True though.
Thanks for a great build and review, I am on the hunt for this kit once I have sent this message. Love your builds and easy presentation .
Love the blue you picked - great build. Thanks
Thank you!
Reminds me of the blue 1977 Firebird Esprit I used to have.
Nice job!
Thanks!
Love that year of firebird, came out great, love the video...
Much appreciated Charles!
You really brought that kit to life. I love it. SCREAMING CHICKEN BABY😉
Thanks a lot Danny!
My favorite Chris awesome job on it
Thanks a lot Jeff!
This is what I would call a Lo-Fi model kit, but you did a fantastic job bringing out the details. I'd love to see this model in gold. Might have to get it.
you did a nice build on that reissue I built one way back when they came out, good to see again
Thanks Craig!

Nice job on this build. I really enjoyed it. I’m a
big T/A & Firebird fan. I wish my build on my 1980 Indy Pace was that good.

Smokey and THE bandit is my favorite movie
Clean crisp build love the grill

77 bird was my first car I love them!
Mine is an 89
Awesome 🤘 🤘 as always
I remember seeing a Firebird back in the early 80s with a blue color like that with the blue fire chicken and stripes on it. It was great. This was a great build. 👍
Thanks a lot Duke!
Almost bought one of these the other day, got me a ‘70 Hemi Cuda instead. Nice one again mate, looks good in the blue 👍🏼
Thanks Dale!
Nice build. Thanks for the tips and tricks.

Looks awesome!
Thanks!
Beautiful car Chris.
Thank you Charlie!
Nice kit. great color.
Thanks Steven!
A Rockford Files variation. My Mom drive a '75 as I remember as a kid with a center hump mounted 8 track player; Bring on the Allman Brothers Live at the Filmore or America:Ventura Highway!
Awesome job!
Thanks!
Super sharp ! Chris lady friend had a black T/A back in the day
Thanks!
Amazing as always
Thanks Thomas!
That is a beautiful blue!

Thank you Richard!
Good looking build.
Thanks Nathan!
Hi,looks sharp and fun to see,The blue looks awsome on this with the decal hood bird.thanks
Thanks David!
Amazing model!👍
Thanks Dude!
Been waiting to see this review. Gonna need at least 3 of these kits. The build option for the tamer version screams Rockford Files to me. Then the decal sheet with the 3 different chickens almost forces you to buy more kits. Might need 4 all together. Man, this re-issue is gonna sell like hotcakes! Nice build and review!
Thanks a lot Topper!
Love the videos thay have taught me alot of little tricks
Thanks as always!

Robert
Thanks Robert!
Great looking model!!!!! 1977-78 Trans Am’s are some damn good looking cars!!
Thanks Jeff!
Grew up in Pontiac and parents all worked for GM, I have never had luck with MPC but its my favorite muscle car.
Nice!
That's one bad mama-jama right there. Great job Chris. I didn't see a solid hood option in the review. BUMMER. Got some ideas about this kit. I'm glad I'm a recycler, cause watching your vids makes me wanna take all this old green paper outta my wallet and turn it into styrene. LOL. Build on Brother.
Haha, thanks for watching man!
i really love the Paint job on 77 pontiac firebird
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic work!! I may buy this kit along with the 1970-73 Trans Am kit, and make a cool diorama with them.
Thanks, enjoy!
lol, your comments regarding flash speak volumes! :)
We just gotta snap it off, smooth it out and move on. Not worth getting as upset as some peeps do.
Pretty blue bird!
Got a quote for ya too since ya mentions cruising around the high school. Lol
"That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.
Alright Alright Alright
Super nice!
Thanks!
Nice one, Chris! I find a lot of the MPC kits have to be sanded/fixed up before completion. Their moulds are not so great but the kits are robust and look fantastic when they're finished!
It's a sweet kit, most older design models need some modeling work, that's half the fun!
Great Job!!!!!
Thank you!
Man, as soon as I saw the base Firebird in the background in Sierra Gold metallic, I knew what I had to do: Rockford!
It'll take some kitbashing, but I believe a '77 Firebird Esprit is possible with this kit!
The curvy stripes were on the Formula Firebirds. Started on front fender, over door, and swept up the B pillar, similar to the Starsky and Hutch Torino. The Formula also had a ram air hood instead of the shaker hood.
Good info!
You do a hell of a job brother..
Thanks Tripp!
facebook.com/hpiguysworkshop
Nice! I had one of these in black with gold.. the real thing that is :)
Sweet!
beautiful
Thanks!
Looks so much like my 78 T A only mine had silver on the bottom fading up like a shark!
I enjoyed this build. A bit surprised you didn't go with a Smokey and the bandit inspired build. But you likely done one of those already. Thanks for sharing this.
The kit doesn't include the gold firebird emblem for the black and gold scheme that most people would want. They are probably imitating other model companies, by releasing less popular versions first...or perhaps they are avoiding paying royalties to the movie studio.
@@joeshmoe9978
He shows the decals and I thought he showed 3 emblems one being gold?
Thanks Shawn, this makes for a great every day Trans Am.
For the Bandit I'm waiting for Revell to reissue their official Bandit kit with gold pinstripes, gold coated cross lace wheels CB radio/antenna and Burt's hat on the trees and license plate.
I'm too lazy to paint all those stripes on by hand. Haha!
@@diecastsixtytwo2751 ...no, its black, orange, and yellow and the other one is black, and gray, and red.
hpiguys Workshop They have the Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am last time I was in Hobby Lobby. Are you waiting for another reissue? I’m not sure of the quality, I bought it a few months back...glanced through it and then put it on my shelf. But, you inspired me to have that as my next project.
PS: No hat though. 😉
I actually own a blue 1978 T/A and that color is factory. It's called Martinique Blue. Fantastic job on the build!!!!
Thanks James!
And yes, it's a 1978 paint colour, not 77.
Merry Christmas
Happy holidays!
Great work 👍👏 from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Thanks Hendy!
More video of the interior painting would have been appreciated; most modelers don't realize how much work goes into a good black-on-black-on-black. I built this kit back in the day, and the engine drove me crazy with issues of fit and placement. Back then it cost me eight bucks. Today it's a major investment. I still haven't chosen between a redo of this kit, or to try out the Revell offering. Both kits have their issues. Thanks for posting.
I could not get the exhaust manifolds to get around any part of the body or suspension to get the motor to fit properly. I also got lucky with this kit. My wife’s uncle had to be put in a home and I basically got freedom to take any models I wanted. Out of over 100, I took 5 to stay humble, with this being one of them
Sweet build !! Gotta get one and do the bandits car since there are decal options
Enjoy your build up!
sweet firebird
Thanks!
Man i want 3 of this kit with those decals at least the blue comboe and a silver...carb looked weird the way it was set back but wutever...i was just debating trying to clear over plastic on a kit ill watch the other ones.
I got to pick this kit up
Enjoy!
Not sure if anyone has tackled Ponch's gold Trans Am with the custom Formula scooped T/A Shaker hybrid hood, but that would be a cool build as well!
I never thought of that but I loved that show, that would be a cool TV car to have in display.
And John's Mini Cooper and his GMC too.
damn nice color
Thanks goes to Testors!
I love that font on the decal sheet.
Where's the stock Firebird hood?
Not really into 60s American cars (prefer 40s & 50s) but this turned out superbly. The blue you used is perfect....
Thanks Simon!
As always a beautiful build Chris. I've always wanted a 77 Pontiac Firebird T/A and I'd want it in this color because blue is my favorite color. Seeing this makes me want to go out and get my hands on this one and built it up and then tell my girlfriend to spray on her Auqua Net, put on her make up, and tight blue jeans and I'll put on my KISS t-shirt and we'll go cruisin' to the skating rink on a Saturday night ! Hey Chris, maybe you would like to come along with us !
I'll ride in the backseat like a creeper.
Hey Chris. I got an interesting fact to tell you and your other subscribers about just in case you may or may not know. I have seen the movie Smokey and The bandit many times and I used to have a DVD of it. The DVD I had included an interview with Burt Reynolds and he told a very interesting story about the famous black Trans Am he drove. I had read at the time that Pontiac's sales were not good at the time and that they were considering dropping the Trans Am at the time but decided to give it another go. So they put the 77 Trans Am in production and after Smokey and the bandit was made, Pontiac's sales increased very rapidly. And after Burt Reynolds made Smokey and the bandit, he was told that he would have a brand new 1977 Pontiac Trans Am delivered to him absolutely free within a week or two. Burt's Trans Am was never delivered to him. So he called Pontiac on the phone and talked to a secretary and he said " Hi this is Burt Reynolds." "I was supposed to receive a new Pontiac Trans Am." "But I have received it yet." The secretary asked Burt if he could hold on for a moment. Burt said sure. Then the secretary came back to the phone and told Burt "Well Mr. Reynolds, the problem is the old president of Pontiac has died and the new president doesn't want you to have one." So Burt Reynolds had to buy one instead. I wish they would make a model of the Kenworth truck that Jerry Reed drove in Smokey and the bandit. That was one beautiful truck !
I bought a 2005 Chrysler 300c
And a 2005 Chevy Camaro Concept
Both from AMT
Got them from Ollies ( Building 19 )
For only $9.99 each
They are in Plymouth mass.
Awesome model. I have 2 of the original black birds by mpc.
Nice!
Hey don't forget about Dad 77 or 78 Trans Am
LOLing at "screaming chicken"!
Another great build and love the way you did the nose. However I wish MPC would have included a stock hood with no hole for a plain jane Firebird.
Thanks for the comment Alconk!
Would have gone a long way in helping to turn this into Rockford's Firebird Esprit.
O my she beautiful amazing work inspiring man
Thanks a lot!
My uncle had a black one 78 I was 9 but what a car....
Hey Chris great job as usual. I'M having trouble finding the black Rust-Oleum primer, our you using the paint and primer black Rust-Oleum paint as your " primer"? thanks for the video and 1040 good buddy.✌
Thanks!
It's an actual primer, works awesome. Link to what I buy below. I get it wherever it's the cheapest. Walmart carries it too.
www.menards.com/main/paint/spray-paint/primer-spray-paint/rust-oleum-reg-painters-touch-reg-2x-ultra-cover-reg-spray-paint-primer-12-oz/249846/p-1444452953561-c-12867.htm?tid=-5973249281683609514&ipos=8
Nice looking build, I recently built the two older version by Revell (77 & 78 Firebirds), the mpc kit has better tires and nicer selection of decals and they actually include the "TRANS AM" logos. Too bad the roof panels aren't clear. Does it have the regular hood for the stock Firebird version?
I go through all the parts in every video, I only saw the T/A hood.
Love your videos, thank you. Do you ever plan on building a VW beetle for us older beetle fans?
I did the Streetle Beetle but there aren't a lot of Beetle kits being issued lately.
Nice
Thanks!
I’m new at building models and really enjoy your videos! I’ve built two muscle car kits and am interested in building this T/A.
Two questions:
How do you do the silver trim around the windows, etc.?
When you refer to “flat coating” the wheels on this model in particular, what do you use?
Thanks and keep up the great work!
Two questions
Check the home page of my channel for more recent reviews where I cover that stuff more in depth. Thanks!
Awesome Chris!! Love it, thanks for the building tips as well my friend! 1977 great year I was born Feb. 18th '77...👍

77 rules!
Great looking build almost makes you want to buy 2. Thanks! That orange version is the old Rockford Files car. Old Jim - is an ex-con and private detective. He was falsely convicted of a crime he didn't commit, but that doesn't stop him from using his ex-con buddies to help him solve crimes.
Yup, a cool show, a friend did a Rockford Firebird on his show.
Hi was wondering how the simple green cleaning prose's go's,do you spay the parts or soak them, straight or diluted any info would be great.thanks for your show I really enjoy it
