The original Dodge Super Bee was based on the Dodge Coronet two-door coupe, and was produced from 1968 until 1970.[5] It was Dodge's low-priced powerful muscle car and a rebadged version of the Plymouth Road Runner. The origin of the name, "Super Bee", has its basis in the "B" Body designation pertinent to Chrysler's mid-sized cars, including the Road Runner and Charger.[6]
Plymouth's Road Runner sales were enough to have Dodge Division General Manager, Robert McCurry, request a similar model from the Dodge Styling office. Senior designer, Harvey J. Winn, won a "contest" with the name "Super Bee" and a new logo design based on the Dodge "Scat Pack" Bee medallion.[7] The design of the first Super Bee was influenced by the 1968 Coronet convertible and the show car's interior was built by the Alexander Brothers. The show car was introduced at the 1968 Detroit Auto Show.[8]
Although the two cars are similar in external appearance, the Super Bee was slightly heavier (approx. 65 lb (29 kg)) and rode on a 117-inch (3,000 mm) wheelbase compared to the Road Runner's 116 in (2,900 mm) wheelbase.[9][10] In addition to minor external differences, such as larger rear wheel openings, the bumblebee tailstripe and fancier grille, and the taillight ornamentation, the Super Bee also used actual diecast chrome-plated "Bee" medallions.
The Super Bee was available with the Hemi engine.[13] This option raised the price by 33%, and only 125 were sold. The 1968 model was only sold as a two-door coupe, with two engine options, the base 335 hp (250 kW) 383 Magnum, and the 426 Hemi, rated at 425 hp (317 kW).[6]
The Super Bee included a heavy-duty suspension, an optional Mopar A833 4-speed manual transmission, and high-performance tires.[14] Outside, a stripe (with the bee logo) was wrapped around the tail.
A "six-pack" (three two-barrel Holley carburetors) version of Dodge's 440 cu in (7.2 L) engine was added to the offering list mid-year rated at 390 bhp (395 PS; 291 kW) @ 4700 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft (664 N⋅m) @ 3600 rpm of torque.[17][18] The option code for this was A12, which changed the 5th digit of the VIN to M. These special order 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bees are known as A12 M-code cars. The A12 package also equipped the cars with a Dana 60 axle with a 4:10 gear-ratio, heavy duty automatic transmission or a 4-speed manual, and a 'lift off' flat black scooped hood. Other components to the A12 package included heavy duty internal engine parts, black steel rims with high performance G-70 15" tires, and heavy duty 11" drum brakes. Only 1,907 A12 M-code 440 Six Pack 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bees were produced. This option fell half-way between the standard engine and the Hemi as a USD463 option. The 1969 model year included the base 383 Magnum, 440 Six Pack, and the 426 Hemi. The 440 Magnum (4bbl) was reserved for the Coronet R/T.
For the 1970 model, the Super Bee received a redesign and a new front-end that consisted of a twin-looped front bumper that Dodge Public Relations referred to as "bumble bee wings".[19] Sales fell for the year from 15,506 in 1970 to 5,054 in 1971-because of, or in spite of, this new look, with another sales pressure coming from higher insurance rates for performance cars; the similar Plymouth Road Runner and Plymouth Duster both experienced similar sales issues.[20] In addition to the new looks, engine choices and "ramcharger" hood carried over from 1969, the 1970 cars from Dodge featured several new or improved options. For example, a "C- stripe" variant of the bumble stripe was offered, in addition to new high-back bucket seats, a steering column-mounted ignition and a "pistol grip" Hurst shifter on four-speed models. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Another really neat build! I'd add this to my collection... But I still have to finish my 60++ unfinished kits. XD
You can do it!
@@hpiguy Yes, slowly but surely.
Saw a 68 super bee at a gas station ast year awsome car
Ment to write last year
@Timothy Hunter it cost money thoe
I love coming home after a long day and immersing myself in your videos. Thank you for the work you do.
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks a lot!
I built this kit back in about 1984. The version I had had the body molded in the dark blue metallic and it came with a special wax that you applied to give it a deep shine. As I recall, it was labeled as a turtle wax product. A great looking model.
When you showed the rear window I saw The Jokers smile there. Super build Chris, keep em coming I'll keep watching.
Nice touch with The Blue Danube playing in the background. 🙂
While in the Air Force, stationed in Montana in the early 70's, I owned a 68 Super Bee, bronze color, 383 magnum. Would love to have it again.
I became a fan of your show when Covid started. After a 30 year hiatus the show brought me back into building models. Thanks for all the information and great videos. Keep up the good work
That is awesome!
I will definitely be buying this kit. I have the Metal-Glow version of this kit from the 80s that I watched my Dad build when I was a kid. Still one of my favorite models.
Enjoy!
Absolutely fantastic and awesome build brother. Absolutely killed it with this build. Thank you for sharing your builds, ideas, and tips. Everyone keep yourself and love ones safe and healthy and remember to smile it's suppose to be fun. Thank you again
Thanks for the support!
Awesome kit . great build as always . This one the paint is crazy good !
SOOOO KOOOOOLLLLLL .
Mike .
Really nice looking build. I am 1/2 way through mine; yellow and flat black. I tried a textured paint for a vinyl top which came out pretty cool. Love your dash work too. 👌
I honestly think you had started the spray can movement about 2 years ago. What I mean by that is you proved to a ton of builders that you can use common spray paints instead of the air brush and still have an amazing looking paint job. I'm 1 of those who didn't put much stock in rattle can paint jobs because I was brought up on the air brush. Thank you for showing some of us older and newer modelers that you don't need to spend a ton of money to make a beautiful and very presentable build. Much respect for you and a very loyal fan.
Thanks a million Teddy, keep having fun!
I build this kit from 30 years ago this one is beautiful love the b.f. Goodrich decals those make the difference even the real tires make these old muscle cars look great made my day thanks!!!!
Right on!
I built that same car model back in the 1990s. It was the one by Monogram that was molded in a blue metallic plastic. I took the Testors silver metallic and gloss blue paint and mixed up my own blue metallic paint for the body color. It looked close to the B5 blue that they used in the factory. It was a nice looking car when I was done.
This project looks so amazing the color combinations on a car that already has good lines. I’m blown away it looks so good. Great build
Thanks so much!
Nice simple kit love Mopar s sweet build the colors are very nice thanks for all your builds and tips waiting on the next build .
Thanks 👍
Nice video Chris...... That's a GREAT kit!!!!!!! 👍 👌 👍 👌
It sure is!
I had the 80s issue of this kit with the body molded in metallic blue and it had a little tear open packet of turtle wax included. It was a very cool kit that goes together extremely easy. I think they may have added a hood and a supercharger to this newer issue as well as more decals. .I need to get me one of these!
I used testors sapphire blue metallic on mine and used the white rear super bee stripes. It turned out AWESOME! Great parent child project. The level of detail is excellent, don't let the fact it doesn't have a high parts count fool you!
Keep building your way!!
.
This model looks more modern. The moldings are great and proud. I can totally picture this car on the street today, and at car shows. Beautiful!
Thank you!
Beautiful work on the model car!
My top 5 favorite car ever. You do the coolest models!
Glad you like them!
14:16 Chris, thanks for still another amazing video. Speaking only for myself, I like to paint most of the non-chrome engine parts with Dullcoat after I paint them. It looks more realistic to me. I know you handle chrome the same way, for the same reason.
I have an older release of this kit, and I built mine almost identical to yours. I just did a white vinyl top using masking tape and white paint on mine.
Do your model kits the way you want to friend
Gotta love that blue paint-job with white stripes!!!!
Thanks a lot!
I see now why I like your video’s,I’m left handed also, keep the videos coming
Thanks!
I had the '80's (blue metallic) Turtle Wax version. Glad to see this kit back again.
I love the box art on that one, hence sticking with the metal blue paint.
Really nice build Chirs... 69 was a great year for any car that came! Luv the color and it looks ready for the road , how about a nice burnout!!!😀thanks again for sharing...👍👍
Thanks a lot!
Great work. I appreciate your channel
So nice of you!
The color reminds me of the one the original 1995 release of the 1967 Plymouth GTX Revell kit came molded in (kit #7359). Looking good thus far!
What a beautiful job my friend, keep them coming 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
I had the the molded in blue metalflake version of this kit that I build when I was about 13 yrs old. I used testors sapphire blue spray bombs. This is a very easy kit and those who hate on it can go suck lemons. The new tires with this kit are alot better than the first version I had. And indeed, I truly enjoy my purchase. This kit is EASY. The exhaust manifolds are easy if you rubber band the engine to the chassis then make sure you have em angled out so they line up. This is EASY cause you can actually snap the exhaust pipes/ rear springs and axle in to verify it. Just how I did mine.
Y'all are missing out on a very cool kit if you don't like it's scale. It would be a great father/daughter build...it fits nice.
Can't wait to build mine! Thank you Chris for all your cool advise tips and tricks! What a super sweet build buddy!
Any time!
I was lucky enough to have the actual car in 1969. My Superbee was orange with a removable black fiberglass spoiler hood and I installed Hooker Headers on it, as well. I loved that car!!
Happy New Year and a big hug from Mexico. I hope that all your desires and goals will be fulfilled and that you have a lot of health and joy just like your family. Thank you for your videos and feedback.
Thanks Roberto! Happy New Year!
AWESOMENESS !!
Great work as always.
Paint is done so right.
Thanks again as always Mike!
Great build again Chris, thanks for all of your posts.
Thank you!
I love your builds, always wonder why they never included headers for the custom version
Great build chris thanks
Everything about this car is perfection. The body, the engine the 440 wedge six pack. Way better than the Hemi. Yeah how many have I just got real mad? Really day to day you can't beat a wedge motor. Torque Monster and livable for days. This and a 71 Cuda with the same motor. Just awesome!
Thanks a lot!
Nice build, great colour!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very cool build!!!
Hey,Chris love your builds Hope to see more
Thanks a lot!
Great build!! The Tchaikovsky was perfect with the paint, the PSH PSH of the spray can was synchronized well. Fine work!
Thank you very much!
Another AWESOME build!!! love the detail work on the interior.!!
Thanks a bunch!
Can't go wrong with Mopars! I dig All your builds, Chris. I have a growing inventory of unopened kits just waiting in the wings.
Thanks, Enjoy!
Great kit/build.....glad its molded in white.
Thanks a lot!
A superbee on a car calender has given me inspiration for this kit! Think ill pick the kit up and recreate the car.
Enjoy!
Any chrome parts that I don't want to be chrome I just soak in a little Purple Power and it completely removes the chrome from the part. I love watching your vids by the way. Been building for about 40 years and still pick up all kinds of neat new tricks on building from you! Keep it up!
Thanks a lot!
Fabulous, looks great now I have to get one. Thanks Chris
.
Enjoy!
A sweet simple kit. Great build. Thanks.
Glad you like it!
Beautiful job, Chris!
Thank you kindly!
Looks great Chris. Nice color too. Thanks for sharing.
You bet!
Damn. That turned out awesome. Great build.
Thanks a lot!
Now that's a gorgeous Mopar! I mean that car looks just as hot as a 68/69 Charger. Good stuff! Great job!
Fun sweet ride my brother had one in 1973 in high school he was one of the cool guys :) later in 1976 i got a 1967 Chevelle SS396 Turbo 400 auto fun screamer too :) we were lucky kids
Thank you!
Great work and great video, as always. Thank you. This is one of my 1:1 dream cars.
Glad you liked it!
awesome build sir!
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool build of a really cool car!!! I have learned a lot from watching your channel. Thank you for showing "how to" steps to get good results.
Thank you!
I love the model but I love 1970 Super Bee a lot better

That's one great build mate! Keep building YOUR way :)
Thanks a lot!
Great build... I painted the Country Charger that body color and left the hood flat black. the look is awesome!
Thanks a lot!
Sharp build, Chris!!👍👍
Glad you like it!
Great build love the color choices that blue really pops 👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Just built one and wow 🤩
Thanks and Happy New Year to you!
Great job Chris! I'm glad they added shocks. I don't believe these were included in the original issue of the kit. The decals look much better too. Much more opaque. Nice. And love the satin look of the hood. I originally built this kit back in the 80's, right after it came out. Looks like I have to build it again! May add a vinyl top, just to be a little different......:)
Thank you!
Awesomely beautiful job there Bro.
Thank you kindly!
Nice build, as always. Love the color you chose.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice,I love it,awsome work.
Thank you very much!
Amazing build as always, would love to get my hands on one of these kits!
You should!
@@hpiguy i definitely will if i see it around in the local shops, i’m in canada so shipping and stuff can be expensive. Love the channel !
Great build paint came out great. Flat black looks great. I’m going to have to pick up shortcuts flat black.
Thank you!
Great build as usual mate👍
Glad you like it!
Great build
Thanks!
Very cool build
Thank you!
Beautiful paint job.
Thank you!
Very cool build. Love the channel
Much appreciated!
Great looking model. The Super Bee. She's a Honey👍.
Yes indeed!
Nice. Very faithful to the actual car.
Killer Super Bee build Chris, I really dig your color choices! Excellent presentation as always!!
Thanks Ron!
I built it in the 80's as a Monogram kit. Moded in blue metal glow. includes Turtle Wax plastic model kit wax. Monogram number 2215 .I still have the box
Nice build once again. One thing that gets me are the mold seams. There's one on each side under the c-pillar and around the engine just to mention a few. I never leave them be, they have to be sanded off. But that's just my 2c. Great work. You brought the fun back into this hobby and thanks to Your videos my kit stash keeps piling up and my wallet light and thin 🤣🤣
I don't stress mold lines and what not. Simple, fast, fun builds in a couple days, twice per week is all I do. Thanks a lot!
I was waiting for you to build this Chris!!! SOOOOOO dang cool!! I went and got my kit beginning of last month sometime. I got something to look forward to now!! Love it buddy!!🤘🤘👍
Thanks a lot!
beautiful!!!!! gotta have it
Thanks!
🦅👍awesome lookin
Thanks a lot!
Hey that's looks great! I like those easy types. Since I switched to rust-oleum I get better paint jobs now. Thanks for all your good tips
Glad you like them!
@@hpiguy I do. Just make sure the paint is dry before putting on that polish or it cracks as I found out. But I can fix it.
Nice job!
Thank you!
Super nice! I've got this same model, only it's from about 30 years ago.
Thank you!
I love that paint color with the bumblebee stripes on the back of the car and I can understand how delicate they can be to put on those tires but the car came out gorgeous beautiful incredible awesome superb outstanding remarkable amazing as all your other models do.it is excellent fantastic eye popping jaw dropping. and as always keep up your great work.
Right on!
I just bought this kit not too long ago it was after Christmas I'm going to make it in the street machine look it look like a real nice kit
Hope you enjoy it!
had some old kits laying around and a old tube of testors cement so I used that much as I could but it was toast! so went to hobby lobby looking for tamiya cement and they had nothing! went next door to harbor freight to check thier glues out and found a 3 pack on slow CA. $1.80 that did the trick! worked great and parts were easily attached in seconds w/o waiting for things to dry...
something else that works for drag/show cars is spray windows with transparent blue which gives a stealth appearance.......... nice job on the B!!
Thanks a lot!
I have one quite like this, molded in blue gray. Gorgeous! One question, please: When you applied the white stripe in back, was there an open space on the decal where it goes over the side reflector? I remember one of your videos where you had a problem with that. Thanks! Wisconsin native here.
Superb outstanding excellent as always keep up your great work it’s amazing what you did on your model
Thank you very much!
My best friend's first car was a 1969 Coronet 440...in 1982, and not a Super Bee. He only had the car about 6-8 months before he wrecked it. Even before then, it was in really bad shape; the brakes were incredibly soft and there were serious rust holes in the body; it's a wonder it survived long enough to be wrecked. BTW, when my friend wrecked it, the only damage was to the car and he walked away without a scratch.
Great build Chris, if my friend's only looked like that.
Thanks a lot!
I felt that the use of J. Strause’s “Blue Danube Waltz” during the priming and painting was particularly clever.
Thanks a lot!
Very nice build. I enjoy your Chanel.
Thank you very much!
Chris - not sure if you know this, but the front frame sections on the vintage Mopar muscle cars would be body color, not black. It's a unibody - are fame components and sheet metal are welded together and painted as one in real life. Nice work, by the way. Your videos are addictive!
Thanks for watching!
Loved it Chris, as always! You've been doing some really cool stuff lately.
Just got my order in from the folks at MR. They are awesome indeed!
Always look forward to these very awesome videos Chris. Keep on truckin',
and remember to "not sweat the petty things, and DON'T pet the sweaty
things!" See you next time, stay safe brutha....
Thank you!
I like it👍
Thanks a lot!
nice car model and very nice final finish
congratulations
Thanks a lot!
