This video (sponsored by Factor) shows how I carved a rock with angle grinder and combined it with a chainsaw carved log to make a media console or coffee table. Making DIY stone furniture is not that hard and the materials for the project were salvaged for free. I am not very good at chainsaw carving yet but my 40volt Ryobi Chainsaw buzzed right through this mulberry log. I did most of the shaping with my angle grinder and a carving disc.

A good tip might be to make the bottom slightly concave so that only the outer rim makes contact with the ground, similar to how mugs and bowls have a rim to sit nicely on a table

What a great video! Really well done. These videos take time to not only record but edit but it flowed smoothly with lots of information and links! Perhaps spray water when using the angle grinder on stone, the diamond coating lasts much longer and the dust is kept down from floating in the air.

Hmmm, I'm looking at the part where you are trying to get a flat bottom on your rock. You might want to look to pottery for inspiration. If you turn a cup or a plate upside down most will have a circular base to them. Usually an unglazed ring, called a setting ring. It's easyer to have a smaller perimeter that's flat and making contact with the surface below it, and the middle gets carved in more so as to not touch at all. I hope that makes sense.

Hey Ben, 3M produces hearing protection for helmets. There are holes on the side, where you can screw it in.
The Versaflow-System is great, but prohibitively expensive for a DIYer. I got the helmet used on EBay and built my own belt out of a little 12V blower, a USB-C powerbank and screw in gasmaskfilters. Not as elegant as 3Ms Version, but still better than anything I used before.

You also need to remember you can take concrete crush up colored bricks, throw into the mix and build a mortar type joint at the bottom to match the color of the rock so that it is flat at the bottom mixing crushed rock of different colors. You can taint your concrete to fill in gaps and level off the bottom. Just a suggestion I love what you did.

The cheap grinder blades do great with normal stones like these. We only need expensive ones for granite and other really hard stones.
I haven't used the wood ones, but I'd love to get into it. Might even put a groove in the middle for extra comfort ;)

One interesting approach could be anchoring the wood blocks in before cutting their tops flat... that way the aligment wouldnt actually be the thing translating to a flat square top at the end. Cool build. Always enjoy how you find ways to keep organic form in your projects!

If you can get access to a drill press.
Take a 4x4, and drill holes for the sizes of drills you need to use, through the 4x4,
Then secure the 4x4 over the spot you want to drill, so the hole you prepped in the 4x4 is in the right spot.
Then when you can have confidence that you are drilling straight.
EDIT - For the cracks, you could also get some sawdust from the work you did grinding the wood down. And mix it with wood glue, then feed that into the cracks.
