  • I designed, carved, and installed a 25000 granite boulder tub that holds around 250 gallons of water. Complete process from excavation to installation. This project took around 7 weeks of labor, over the course of 6 months.

    I love that this is presented with such modesty when it is by far the most impressive tub build you are ever likely to see, the humility is as impressive as the build. The attitude of saying "I was more inspired than I was threatened" is good advice on how to create a good aptitude for anyone in any endeavour. Fantastic results and approach
    I have seen rocks with similar rocks discarded by quarries because cracks devalue them, sometimes you will see them spray painted with an orange box around the crack I guess so no one takes it by mistake. Really impressed by the repair and sure it hold out perfectly fine

      Thank you so much! I do feel modest about it, at the end of the day I am just a curator and not the artist. I adore the natural beauty of the local stone here, and hope to make many more functional pieces that are modified just to the point of function. Maintaining the original skin and not over-polishing is something I hope to be known for. Appreciate the kind words on the crack, I think it will be ok! I would avoid using a piece with any cracks next time, I feel grateful to learn a valuable lesson without catastrophe. 🙏

The advantage of stone over metal with (blind hole) core drilling is that with the former, the core can be removed by breaking it off. One thing however is that for (deep) drilling operations a solid clamping surface is required. Like a metal plate with pre-cut guide holes temporarily expoxied in place or something similar? Depending on the drilling machine interface obviously.

      You're mocking, but they clearly struggled with some serious tools and machines. Now go back 6000 years, remove the advanced tools he used, make the stone x20 larger.

      @@YeahNoTellTheTruth I was thinking the exact same thing. It is unfathomable how they managed to cut 2-3tons Granite blocks with insanely accurate precision on a geometric scale and then successfully moved them on a 40 degree angle, 300ft in the sky.. 🤯 They we're far more advanced than we give credit for.

    This is INSANE! I own a Fence and deck company and have come across 2 boulders like that. Granite and Massive. They were the most annoying rocks I have ever dealt with.
    1 I had to core drill (it ate up 2 carbide bits so I started renting them instead) and fill with expansion mixture, which sort of worked so I bought a set of rock splitting wedge and shims. It was a complete fkin nightmare and took WEEKS to bust down small enough to have a crane come in a pull it out in 8-10,000 lbs pieces.
    The other I used a saw and Jack hammer to make a flat spot that I could bolt the post to the rock lol (I learned my lesson the first time!) 😂
    You’re brave and patient

    super awesome. i can imagine how nice it must feel to relax in it on a hot day. my main concern is about 10 years down the line that rebar my start to rust and expand, adding more cracks to your tub.

    • @jameslostlen
      @jameslostlen  Před 8 měsíci +3

      I totally overlooked that when focused on the crack. I wish I had used stainless. Hoping to totally seal off the crack all around to prevent the water from rain or the tub entering, then in this desert heat and dry climate I won’t worry about the rust - it is not an issue out here unless in standing water or deep underground. Thanks for the heads up!

    Not sure how this blew up so fast but congratulations! I hope to see more inspired projects like this! Would you do anything differently? I’m wondering if a large sandstone boulder would work or not.

    • @jameslostlen
      @jameslostlen  Před 8 měsíci +10

      The algorithm gods have smiled upon me :) I would use a bigger saw, and cut more like the last long slices you see later in the video, cubes are not necessary. Learned a lot and tooled up quite a bit during this. I’m not sure sandstone would be rigid enough or hold water but I am very unfamiliar with it other than lake Powell and rock climbing in red rocks…

    • @09conrado
      @09conrado Před 8 měsíci +2

      Sandstone would need a sealant for else it would run dry in half an hour or more, depending on the type of sandstone
