Using Rocks to make a Bench

- I cut rocks and used them to make a bench. I bought a couple of rocks for about $8 each and the cut one side of the rocks to make them flat. I used an angle grinder with a diamond blade meant for tile and granite. I had a leftover piece of a 6by12 beam from the construction of my new house. These beams are 5-1/2" by 11-1/4" in the cross section. I carved the wood with a saw and machete at first before power carving curves with an angle grinder and a Holey Galahad Carving disk.

As an old guy who has been working with his hands for almost 50 years, take my advice and do everything you can to reduce vibration and shock in the tools you’re using. The accumulated damage to your hands and forearms can leave you with reduced function and a lot of annoying pain. Wood handled tools like an axe would be better than a machete. I know you probably did that for the cool factor, but for people wanting to do something like this for themselves, an axe would be a better choice. Also if it glances off toward your body, a machete has like 2 feet of cutting edge to get you vs an axes 4 inches. Cool bench tho.
How true. I fight pain daily. Unfortunately I was not in a position to refuse the jobs I had 35 years ago. Everything from texting to wiping can at times be excruciating.
@@tireballastserviceofflorid7771 yeah, years ago nobody really cared about health and safety and I grew up working on farms, then the military, then industry. It’s frustrating now that I’m the most skilled and capable and I’m restricted by my broken down body. Like you’d said, even something as simple as typing out a comment can be painful
Man doesn't seem to care about it with all the 'cool' street cred / clout he's getting. Doesn't even seem to acknowledge this comment.
@@tireballastserviceofflorid7771I am pretty old and know plenty of older people, including my father, who did plenty of labor and are not suffering from your maladies. I guess it just depends on your particular body.
@ohsweetmystery Well, work is not all the same. I had to run a punch press when I was 18. Made 4000 parts a day or was fired. The machine worked great, but gave everybody corporal tunnel syndrome. Then other jobs just like it for a few decades. You do the wrong type of work, and you're screwed. Other jobs are a lot of work but way less risky on the body.
This is the type of clever design and doable DIY that I like about your channel!
Thank you very much! I really like this one!
Doable?? 😅
This DIY bench project is boulder than most! It’s got a rock-solid foundation.
Combining stones and lumber really sits well with me!
one of my favorite designs of yours you've ever made. simple, elegant, sturdy, and not permanent!
Fred Flintstone approves of this build..... and so do I.
I think your solution to the cracks is a good one... As always, you teach as good as you build.
Ben Uyeda rocking the boat of traditional furniture design. Love the look, the bottom of the bench looks amazing too, all the wood grain and contours remind me a topographical map.
Thanks so much I appreciate it! yes! I love a good topo map!
I love that piece! Great design and execution, Ben!
thank you so much!!
Good punctuation.

Looks awesome. Really nice to see the progression from the concrete based bench to this. This and the spiral staircase are so unique. Well done.
Beautiful work Ben, love the stone. Glad you didn't take it for granite 😉
lol! next level rock pun. thanks Forby!

That's one solid pun.
Man! This is definitely one of my faves from your channel, not only from this year, but actually in a while. It's clean and just feels sweet and ticklish in my eyes! Since I'd put it at the foot of my bed I guess my pun would be "it (the bench) would make my bed Rock!
Love the design and how you shared the build process. Very well done!
An absolute masterpiece... Sublime!!! The elegance, minimalism, and most of practicality. My salute to you!!
Clean, simple. And that perfect balance between wood and stone.
Scrumptious addition to any home.
Gorgeous, creative artwork by a master craftsman. Inspired respect.
Your design esthetic is off the chart on this one, beautiful work Ben
I really appreciate how you “granited” us deep insight into all the fine details of this beautiful project without us having to be “intrusive” with questions.
Report for promoting terrorism
I really appreciate your organic design.
Also, love your clean white shop background as it makes watching very relaxing. Well done!
I really dig this design, it's reminiscent of rock balancing, and the lumber as the bench to, pis the perfect accent to the white lapis.
Beautiful design Ben! It's awesome seeing your natural expertise really influencing the forms you're making lately.

This is a very beautiful build. Natural stone, natural wood and organic shapes. 🙂I would love to see a variant where it's not sealed with a glossy polish, just leaving it rustic/distressed to give it that 'found in the wild' look. Can't wait to see what you create next!
Great suggestion!

What I love about these builds whether it be for exterior or not, I love the carved, natural appearing shapes that come out of these projects. I love when outdoor furniture resemble some sort of natural, from the Earth material and of course wood always offers that but even more so when carved to appear like it’s this random piece you found when hiking. FYI I’ve seen enough reviews that the Ryobi grinder isn’t the greatest of all grinders. Definitely on the cheaper side but I’m wondering if it was the grinder not performing the way it needed to, even though ik it’s rocks it makes me wonder if it’s a tool issue too
Wood and stone together are beautiful. Thanks for such an inspiring design
If I could give this project something stronger than a like, I would. Awesome. I definitely hope to be making something like this.
You are blessed with an artistic eye, with skills to match, very original, and pleasing to the eye.
Wow! You really cracked that bench out of the park!
Sorry, all the "good" puns were taken.
Love the project, love the buns. Thank you for posting the project and inviting all to throw our terrible paronomasia into the balance.
It’s really cool that you don’t show video with music, but you tell, what you do, all your technology. Thank you for this 👍
I LOVE this design beautifully done!
I would have to be STONEd to come up with that design, and you must have been BEAMing with pride when you saw the finished piece.
Hahaha, well done!!!
@@HomeMadeModern BTW love your content, I’m a long time follower.
Lovely piece. Quite elegant and organic.
I would definitely try to find a 230mm angle grinder for this, they are not crazy expensive compared to the diamond discs anyway. The bench looks really nice !
A really stand out project, nice work
You really rocked that beach.
solid joke!
That bench is rocksome!
That is gorgeous! Well done!
This is both a wonderful example of carpentry skill, and a beautiful piece of contemporary art. Well done

@@victoriagrayson5082 isn't there a bridge somewhere missing its troll? Do you think your pedantic contribution was necessary?
Love the look of these, great job!
beautiful work!
Super cool idea! Thanks for modeling using proper PPE. Cutting concrete, rock etc can create silica dust which is super dangerous. Some interesting recent research coming out of the LA area and the reduction in lifespan of workers who work for counter top companies.
I concur with you. This bench really rocks.
This seat is very, very stylish indeed. I'm adding it to my project list!
Love how this one turned out!
Late to the comments but really like this piece. Feels a lot like an Inukshuk without being an imitation.
Must have somehow missed this one, when it was published. Very cool! Thought, the stones were maybe made from concrete or something at first. But since you figured out, how to actually cut rocks that big with regular tools, it's definitely an option.
Thumbs up 👍
This is so beautiful! I love it!
Quite the balancing act! Well done!
yes looks like those stacked stone sculptures
It came out really great. Awesome job
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks so good man! Excellent design.
Innovative design and execution. One of a kind.
Just Beautiful and well explained. Thank you!
Great design, well done!
This is right up my alley…… very inspiring. I’m subscribing.
this is great i like this bench better than the solid wood one you real put a lot of your self in your work and it really shows
You are the man. Fantastic concept produced beautifully.
Thank you so much 😀
Your bench rocks Ben!
something that a motivated person can achieve .... without having a zeelion of dollars in machinery .... which actually are not woodworkers but machine woodworkers..... cheers bro
Great work. Thanks for sharing!
At 5:02 I see a crocodile with that not near the top, would be a cool sculpture someday!....
I like this project. btw at the end it looked like a caveman skateboard! Kow-a-bunga!
Kudos.
Amazing.
Дуже гарно,неймовірна робота.дизайнерський погляд і вмілі руки.
Love it. Very nice design.
Absolutely love it!
stunningly beautiful!
Bellísimo!!! Te felicito corazon!!
Man this project ROCKS!!!

This is so good I love that this would easily go for 1500 or more in a store.
Much more...
Love the bench!
Very creative. Well done

Nice job black tail. I mean, wait. Who dis?
Not a joke: phenomenal piece. If I had nothing to do I’d replicate that. Very natural looking.
Incrível. Não tem como não inspirar a gente. Obrigado por compartilhar a beleza e a estética original.
Beautiful. Very talented
The beauty of simplicity is inspiring ...
Mate, this design rocks! 🙂 🪨 Great video as always! Thank you for your work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Reminds me of a caveman skateboard. Amazing job!!!
very caveman
Just stunning! Although I can't come up with a pun, I'm enjoying those I'm reading.

Really really great brother!!!
I like the balance between wood and rock 😜
Extraordinary!
Superb work.
This design concept was so cool, and executed masterfully 🙌🏾👏🏾
I’ll take ✌🏾 please 😍
Yay! Thank you!
Inovative as heck....subcribed!
Beautiful work. Very well done and very clever design. I would love to know more about those rocks because my internet searches for "white lapis" or "white lapez" turns up absolutely nothing.
Perfection. Subscribed.
No pun. Just a gorgeous piece. Noguchi would be proud.
I just love the blond wood. Imo, there's way too much rich dark woodwork in the world. The lighter the wood, the more the stone contrasts it, instead of the opposite contrast.
just beautiful!
Love this Rock series. Was thinking a small chain saw would be a great way to cut the main waist.
Pretty nice!
Schönes Projekt. Geringer Materialeinsstz aber ein außerordentliches Ergebnis. 👍👍👍🇩🇪
Beautiful.
