THE THE RELEASE “THE BEAT(EN) GENERATION”, THE SECOND SINGLE FROM THEIR FORTHCOMING ALBUM “THE COMEBACK SPECIAL”.
“When you combine the right songs with the right musicians and an audience
that never forgot, it’s like coming home.”
- Pete Paphides
What started as an unforgettable live experience, and one of the band’s first performances after 16 years, now turns into an extraordinary live album, film & book as Matt Johnson’s London-based Cinéola label teams up with Hamburg-based international rock and pop label, earMUSIC for a series of exciting and exclusive releases.
To complete The Comeback Special experience, THE THE will also be launching a variety of exquisitely designed and exclusive products, all available in the official album store soon. This includes an exquisitely designed 136-page Art Book, featuring 6 discs, exclusive photos, audio content plus director Tim Pope’s beautifully shot, unobtrusive film of the show.
The Royal Albert Hall concert was the first of a trio of London shows during The Comeback Special tour-the others taking place at Brixton Academy and The Troxy-all of which sold out within minutes of going on sale.
Performing live for the first time in 16 years with a headline appearance at Denmark’s Heartland Festival a few days before the Royal Albert Hall concert, the rejuvenated THE THE, which featured previous members James Eller on bass, DC Collard on keyboards and Earl Harvin on drums and new member Barrie Cadogan on guitar alongside Matt Johnson, would go on to play sold-out shows and make festival headline appearances across the globe throughout 2018.
“Part comeback, part requiem, all extraordinary”
- James Hall, The Telegraph
“Johnson’s great achievement is to have made a body of work that is completely original, yet flows smoothly into the slipstream of accessible, socially conscious alternative rock.”
- Will Hodgkinson, The Times
“Johnson retains a gravel-voiced gravitas, and his band are taut and kinetic on barbed missiles such as ‘Armageddon Days (are here again)’… THE THE really shouldn’t leave it 16 years until their next tour.”
- Ian Gittins, The Guardian
“THE THE sound very much like a band revitalized… Johnson may not have sung publicly for years, but there’s little doubt he’s been practising his scales in private.”
- Jeremy Allen, The Independent - Hudba
Matt Johnson is probably the most underrated musician of all time...
Not in my house 😎
nor in my 1980s copenhagen and 90 reality in berlin
@@jespersort1 well I’ve spent my whole 30 years of life in the US, and it’s crazy to me how obscure they are..
But he's not. He's positively revered. He didn't have Top Ten hits (or not many), but he has sold quite some records, and his music has influenced countless musicians. He's a living legend.
@@booognish I remember seeing the video for this song on. 120 Minutes on MTV. round about 30 years ago. That planted a lot of seeds in my young mind. I love this song as much now as I did then.
As timely and brilliant as ever
we are so proud to put this out!
@@earMUSICofficial DANKE❣
I would say more than ever.
Made my night! Been a fan since the 80's. Brilliant as ever!!!
This tour was a joy - especially getting Matt & Co. back to Oz after way too many years. Never forgotten the first gig with Johnny Marr playing in Perth. Amazing gig.
Real quality music has no age man
Timely. Loved it then. Love it now. Thank you.
At 18, I visited friends in London for a month in April 1988. This song was everywhere I went. ❤
Even though "The beat(en) Generation" was released in 1989? Wow. are you a Real Madrid supporter? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant song that sums up what has happened since beginning of 2020 even though it was written long ago!
Great music and amazing group !
So, so good. I've missed Matt.
Brilliant as ever
Super wideo 👍👍👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸🎸pozdrawiam i udanych koncertów życzę
So good.
you will enjoy the album for sure.
Slower version but still brill, this song means so much more now! Genius
A great song, great band.
I love that whenever they play this song live they tend to play it differently changing the feel, tempo however they feel.
That’s what I enjoy myself playing guitar and lead vocals in a band, songwriting & performance. Especially at rehearsal depending on how I feel & mood we can perform various songs differently to previous times or how we intend it should be when written, many times it works and sounds great just changing feel etc. other times it doesn’t and can sound crap which I appreciate, also I get other band members saying we need to play it the same everytime to get it spot on! Usually I’m the biggest one for that but sometimes I think fuck it! A song is about emotion, feel etc so I’ll play it as to how I feel at that time.
Sublime!
Sadly, the themes here hold up very well after 30+ years
so true.
Brilliant
Bloody superb! (Even without Mr Marr!)
Imense ❤
I prefer the more energetic drumming that David Palmer performed on the studio album to this laid back version. The arrangement here is quite different. Not to say the drummer here is bad. He's actually good. It's just David was incredible on this. Not to mention Johnny Marr. But times and band lineups change. Such is life.
Mind Bomb travelled with me to Thailand in 1989 then again the next year and so on.........
Brilliant band - always on point with the right message. Genuis. Looking forward to a comback! x
Wow - is this going to be a prophetic message. (Miss the anger though...I wanted to speed up this song from my youth. Change needs a bit of energy). This sounds a bit resigned. I'm sorry cos I love this band.
When one is making a " Comeback " i would expect it to be at the same pace...not slower...it is literally what comeback means.
Set to tour in 2024...i'll be there, i just hope they have the same enthusiam as i have for seeing them.
The message still applies!
As true now as it was when he first recorded it thirty years ago.
exactly what we thought.
Works both ways
One of the most underrated, might be. But there are some others, like Graham Parker?
👍👍
Cool
How can this be more relevant 30 years after its release?
Sad to see we’ve learned nothing!
Open your eyes, open your imagination.
yes, sad indeed and still so relevant.
Does anybody know if the album version of this song is also played with a melodica? I always thought it was a harmonica/mouth organ. Thank you.
the album version is played with a harmonica :)
Phoning it in
Geez, was this written in 2024?
The worst mistake I ever made was ignoring Mind Bomb and Dusk after the Release of The Beaten Generation for ten years and accidentally discovering they were even better, then Infected. Forgive me Matt. No other Musician touches me emotionally that much.
I miss Johnny Marrs guitar..
One of the greatest albums of all time... Mind Bomb is grossly underrated and is still relevant today
Great gig but this and Beyond Love were butchered in my opinion - if it ain’t broke don’t try fixing it Matt !
I am sure he is really interested to hear that.
Not a fan of this version.
Hey guys, let’s take a great song and make it really boring!
