The genius of Matt Johnson partnered with the stellar guitarist and harmonica player Johnny Marr. It doesn't get much better than this. Too bad most people never even heard this song in the States when it came out (well ... at least I didn't!). Can't describe how satisfying it is listening to Marr's rhythm guitar, overlaid with the lead guitar; So clean and sweet, I want it to go on forever!

I've loved the Smiths from the late 80s but didn't know much about the scene (like Cure, New Order, Joy Division), but just always loved the great melodies paired with dark British humor.
I could go on for pages but probably don't have an actual point other than I love these blokes along with many unmentioned (Americans too).

This may become my anthem in an era of social media where I've never been less sure of the all the people out there who now seem to be more sure of themselves than ever--on war, religion, god, love, sex and death (to name a few).

I think Matt Johnson has to at least be in the discussion when they make lists like "25 Greatest Rock Singers." I can't imagine any other singer doing a cover of this song that would surpass Johnson.
Since he's only 60 (I was surprised he wasn't older!) he should have quite a number of good years ahead of him.

....I find, as do many of you....the poignancy of the introductory piece here- almost too much to bear- without bursting into tears. I often wonder what happened to that old fella - in his past- to make him so....and I wonder about his life, his fate from that day. I hope beyond all reasonable explanation as to why I hope ,beyond all but the most desperate hope; this man found peace and a relief from his sorrow......before the end of his mortal life.
