I had joined the Army in 1991 and assigned to Fort Bragg in 1992. My roommate was a year ahead of me and once a week would play Time Bomb after our PT and during hygiene time. At a minimum, I would hear Good Morning Beautiful, Armageddon Days Are Here (Again), The Violence of Truth, and Kingdom of Rain once a week getting cleaned up for the day. Great, great memories....
My soul's neverending clarion call that informed every toxic relationship I partcipated in... and I was often AS toxic as my partner was: "And I would lie awake and wonder "Is it just me? Or is this the way that love is supposed to be?"" And yet it was the drama, the mistrust of word and deed and the intense dislike/love for my partner(s) that made them all so attractive. The duet of Matt Johnson and Sinead O'Connor could not have captured that psychosis more readily than Kingdom of Rain.
One of my favourite duets of all time. I will never forget when I first heard this song. Before I brought ‘Mind Bomb’ on vinyl I bought it on tape so I could listen to it at night before I went to sleep with my headphones on, and not know what to expect as soon as I heard the lyrics “You were the boy, who turned into a man, who broke my heart and let go of my hand” I almost fell of my bed as I realised instantly, “OH MY GOD that’s Sinead O’Connor!” I was in musical heaven. Man the way she sings, “I just wanted somebody to posses...this young girl” still sends shivers down my spine. Such a pity it wasn’t Sinead in this video with Matt, though the sea horses are a cute touch as I once saw one once diving. Beautiful creatures.
God I only just realised after decades of listening to & watching this video; in the last scene, Matt is standing in the rain looking straight at the Twin Towers.
When a songwriter as talented as Matt Johnson writes and performs with a singer as amazing as Sinead O Conner and both can put the soul into singing with such raw emotion, you have a song of beauty. RIP Sinead, I hope that you find the peace that eluded you in this life.

What a track! A true and real masterpiece. Matt Johnson is a great composer and performer and is terribly missed in the pop industry. Sinead O'Connor's chorus at 3.40 is a must to listen. A perfect duet.
Sinead will truly be missed, but the fact is that Matt chose his Co-singers well knowing that the results would end in some off the most Emotinal duets ever, just never stops amazing me.......
This is just one of Sinead's fantastic duets. 'Visions of You' with Jah Wobble and 'Illegal Attacks' with Ian Brown are 2 more classics collaborations of Sinead's.
No one understood how The The was decades ahead of their time. We are just now starting to catch up. Johnson is a genius. Listen to Good Morning Beautiful if you can.

Tell me what you told him baby My heart's beating out of time with my mind And I know something's going wrong in our lives I just wanted somebody to caress This damsel in distress I just wanted somebody to undress This damsel in distress I just wanted somebody to bless This damsel in distress I just wanted somebody to possess This young girl Our bed is empty The fire is out And all the love we've got to give Has all spurted out There's no more blood And no more pain In our kingdom of rain.
I lived in Tampa in the early to mid 90s and believe it or not, I met women, alternative chicks, punks, hipsters who always who'd want to sleep with me because they thought I looked just like Matt Johnson of The The. LOL He's always been an obscure figure in this country but he was a sex symbol for the alternative music crowd. At the time, I didn't see it tho I enjoyed the attention but now that I am bald, much heavier and 52 yrs old, I look at the video and the scene where Johnson is walking in a city late at night, could very easily be me circa '92 to '94 walking around Tampa late at night coming to or from some club. I was built like that then, dressed like that, wore my hair like that, walked like that, and full-on even looked like that in the face. (I've earned a scar and a broken nose since then, hard living. LOL Thanks, Mr. Johnson. You got me laid a few times as a young man.
The scene very near the end of the video where Matt Johnson watches a cityscape including the World Trade Centre send a shiver down my spine every time. Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day ...
This song somehow reminds me so much of a woman that's no longer in my life. Sinead O' Connor's vocals during the main chorus are superb, full of both vulnerability and fiery emotion. R.I.P.
This song is in my top three of best songs ever…. I will attend 2 concert dates in Belgium in September 2024 (Brussels and Antwerp), and really hope they will do this one 🙏

This is just a TheThe classic by the genius that is Matt Johnson on the sublime Mind Bomb album. Sinead O'Connors voice is just perfect for this song. Wow. Gets better and better every time you hear it...
It's thirty years... But still goosebumps are arising from watching this amazing video and listening to Matt / O'Connor duet in this unforgettable, classy song ! Thank you Matt Johnson :-) Greetings from Polska.
Haunting. My husband has left this earth, but I need to listen to this from time to time, no matter how much it hurts. Another great duet is Sinead with Peter Gabriel, Blood of Eden.
I first became aware of Matt Johnson in the early '80's - he appeared on BBC Manchester's youth culture TV program 'Oxford Road Show' which featured many of the top bands of the day. Matt performed 'Giant' [Live] and for the instrumental part of the song, literally ran along a line of timpani drums accompanying himself. I was blown away by both the song itself as well as by his musicianship and the very next day went to my local record stores to search for his records. I came away greedily clutching his first [solo] release 'Blue Burning Soul' - issued under his own name - as well as the more 'polished' 'Soul Mining' which he released as 'The The'. They were never off my turntables and Matt Jonson/The The have been my all-time favourite 'indie' band ever since. I have bought every 'The The' release [including the 12'' remixed singles] and the 'Infected' video. I was privileged enough to see 'The The' live twice - once after he had just released 'Mind Bomb' - although sadly Sinhead O'Conner wasn't available to appear and perform 'Kingdom of Rain' with Matt. The word 'Genius' is much-overused these days to the extent that the word has become meaningless. But Matt Johnson IS a real genius and I am so grateful that I was lucky enough to have grown up in the era of his groundbreaking music. Respect.
To my humble opinion: this is one of the best songs ever written…. And also one of best collaboration video and audio… images are really speaking to audio, and also the other way round… the mood of the film is really a combination of both
An absolute master with his use of the snare drum and hi-hats. This never gets old. The ending is so haunting it sends shivers up the spine. Mind Bomb is a masterpiece and my favourite The The album.
I would agree. I love Matts work up through 'Dusk'. His writing was so powerful for someone so young at the time. I listened to Mind Bomb for years and years and years. It kept me going during a period of confusion and searching.
