THE THE RELEASE “SWEET BIRD OF TRUTH”, THE FIRST SINGLE FROM THEIR FORTHCOMING ALBUM “THE COMEBACK SPECIAL”.
“When you combine the right songs with the right musicians and an audience
that never forgot, it’s like coming home.”
- Pete Paphides
What started as an unforgettable live experience, and one of the band’s first performances after 16 years, now turns into an extraordinary live album, film & book as Matt Johnson’s London-based Cinéola label teams up with Hamburg-based international rock and pop label, earMUSIC for a series of exciting and exclusive releases.
To complete The Comeback Special experience, THE THE will also be launching a variety of exquisitely designed and exclusive products, all available in the official album store soon. This includes an exquisitely designed 136-page Art Book, featuring 6 discs, exclusive photos, audio content plus director Tim Pope’s beautifully shot, unobtrusive film of the show.
The Royal Albert Hall concert was the first of a trio of London shows during The Comeback Special tour-the others taking place at Brixton Academy and The Troxy-all of which sold out within minutes of going on sale.
Performing live for the first time in 16 years with a headline appearance at Denmark’s Heartland Festival a few days before the Royal Albert Hall concert, the rejuvenated THE THE, which featured previous members James Eller on bass, DC Collard on keyboards and Earl Harvin on drums and new member Barrie Cadogan on guitar alongside Matt Johnson, would go on to play sold-out shows and make festival headline appearances across the globe throughout 2018.
“Part comeback, part requiem, all extraordinary”
- James Hall, The Telegraph
“Johnson’s great achievement is to have made a body of work that is completely original, yet flows smoothly into the slipstream of accessible, socially conscious alternative rock.”
- Will Hodgkinson, The Times
“Johnson retains a gravel-voiced gravitas, and his band are taut and kinetic on barbed missiles such as ‘Armageddon Days (are here again)’… THE THE really shouldn’t leave it 16 years until their next tour.”
- Ian Gittins, The Guardian
“THE THE sound very much like a band revitalized… Johnson may not have sung publicly for years, but there’s little doubt he’s been practising his scales in private.”
- Jeremy Allen, The Independent - Hudba
I LOVE THE THE! Here's an inside story from the early 90's. The The was opening for Depeche Mode at Madison Square Garden.I had tickets for that! I was going for The The We didn't have Instagram, Facebook, etc. I had to look in the local NYC papers to see what bands were playing. In the Village Voice, the listing for for CBGB's that week? A band called EHT EHT was playing! I flipped it and got there quick. I saw THE THE do their set at CBGB's before opening for Depeche Mode! It will go down as one of the greatest musical moments of my life! I wish it was recorded!
A second short story. I taught Photoshop at The School of Visual Arts in NYC. An art college. I did a class on typography and told every one to type a name that means something to them, I will teach you how to create effects on it. I walk around the room, a woman, has "The The", I say" I love that band!", She says, "My husband will be happy to hear that! WOW! Matt's wife took my class! I was blown away! I love The The!
The Mode are not bad too
I just secured front row, almost middle seats to see the The in Toronto Oct 22/24. I've been waiting for about 30 years to see Matt again. This time I'll be bringing my son Matt, for his first concert. I can't believe I scored these.
Omg that was incredible! FLAWLESS…..
The The, one of the most important bands in my life. That said, if you want the girls to cry you need a harmonica.
🤓
A man ahead of his time , amazing artist.
His music has never stopped being relevant.
I wish it would. 38 years on this song hits as hard as the day it was first recorded.
Matt has aged so well. his voice sounds great and he looks great. . . his energy is great
Looking forward to seeing and hearing more. I’ve been a fan since the inception of THE THE and had the chance to work with him while I was at Epic Records. Quiet but super nice guy. Also loving that Johnny Marr is involved with this project.
Bravo....Soul Mining and Infected still in my top 5 albums...
Talk about a flashback to my past! I played the crap out of this song when it first came out!
All his stuff told of what the future held for us , spot on he was !
Wow! What a comeback!!! One of my best favourite artist ever!
One of the most atmospheric and poignant songs of my 20s, from a skilfully crafted and superbly produced album.
Brilliant. I played thIs to death on vinyl.
Me too! Love this new arrangement. 😎
The the my favourite band. I’m Italian.
Saw them at the Glasgow Barrowlands and Concert Hall, absolutely brilliant! Earl Harvin's drumming was the standout, the whole Barrowland audience was following every beat like waves of a human sea, with the rest of the band providing the lightning to Johnson's thunder over that exquisite storm of sound!
Went to both gigs too. Atmosphere, the Barrowlands hands down. Sonically and visually, The Concert Hall came out tops. Both great gigs.
Earl Harvin with Billygoat? Favorite.
Awesome , Can't wait for this live album and DVD ,
A True Artist, in every sense of the word!!
A True Classic , in every sense of the word!
One of the best concerts iv been to they were amazing
WONDERFUL
Was there that night, look forward to seeing all of it
Awesome sound that just gets better..
Such a neat sound...such a great song, such a GREAT band/man...The the :)
One of most talented men in music
now thats what i call music
I bought this LP.
This is....Brilliant
We want Infected on blu ray. I seen The The live in 1987 at the Newcastle City Hall. Best concert i have ever been to!
I was there too, great night !! Can’t wait for the release of the footage.
Matt is a prophet
WoW
Still got it great tune !!!
🌻🕇✌
Super wykonanie milo było posłuchać
Great song and amazing singer with fantastic group !
I played Soul Mining and Infected until the needle snapped off. I still have both albums on my 10 albums only deserted island list. For the first live show I’ve seen in 35 years, what a bloody shame Matt didn’t bring a brass section and a bass Saxophonist. A few top shelf backup singers wouldn’t hurt either.
I agree totally.Brilliant though it was , personally I feel it was too organically stripped down .
Yeah it all sounds very nice and pointless but a bit flat and missing the sharp edge, difficult to be an angry young man in your middle ages
Same and I agree. It's missing the energy and anger. It feels like resignation. I'm a fan though, so it hurts me to say that - they are still brilliant and genuis.
Matt sounded great in Chicago and he sounds great here.
Having a new iteration of the songs and band lineups is part of the appeal of his work.
We never quite know what he’s going to do next…or how long he’ll keep us waiting.
Matt just lost his father before this tour,
yet you wouldn’t know it based on his performances.

Fabulous. Can’t wait.
Still incredible
Phenomenal version
His songs are like Kate Bush songs.. timeless
Yea !
Looking forward to getting this.Would be good if 'Infected' album finally got a dvd/bluray release
I need to see Little Barrie live.
superb as usual
F'g Legends!
Have a nice day 😊
Thank you ❤️
When the time is right come to Houston, TX. We have many venues that would be great.
When they toured Oz a few years ago, I was excited then discovered it was going to be a stripped down, more acoustic presentation of their songs. I was like 'if they don't sound like the albums then no!'....but this was pretty good (but I still would have felt a bit ripped off). Great band though, I have most of their albums. Matt Johnson.....underrated music genius.
The sydney opera house gig was great!
Oh what a Belter Xmas has come early!!!!!
Clean and dirty at the same time, yeah ... !
Nice
Absolutely stunning. Prescient, now tragically poignant.
Sheer MJ spine tingling genius track , from the best album of all time. p.s Could have done with the winged Angel from the vid.
wow. nothing more to say
Brilliant!
What’s NOT to like 👍🏻 👍🏻

never been to church ....!!!!
Technically, on point and sounding fantastic, but I can't help but to feel cold and sterile, lacking of any emotion. I'm hoping this was a song from early in the set and that the gloves come off later in the show.
Every track on Infected had angry, emotional, and twisted vocals, and some on Soul Mining. I guess Matt perhaps can never go to that place so many years on
I saw this show in NYC and I assure you, it doesn't lack for power.
Beautifully put, exactly how I feel after watching this, the danger is missing
@@JazzJaguar yeah, I saw the 2018(?) tour and this song in particular sounded huge - for some reason this 'live mix' audio has his vocals way louder.. what I remember is the drums and bass feeling huge
I agree, John.
7.1 fixed part of the spacial effect for me (lowering vocals a little in that step), but its still very thin, and surely missing some depth, frustration and anger.
Who’s on bass?? Johnny Marr? Going to go look up the lyrics.
James Eller, bassist from the Dusk and Mind Bomb albums
Great live version, but I miss the female vocals in the chorus.
I appreciate the need to block and remove copyrighted material but why not make this movie purchasable for download from the The The or your site?
Чё за лажа?
Powerful sound, fantastic rendition of the song but unfortunately it is missing Neneh Cherry as a back vocal.
Neneh Cherry did not do the original backing vocals
I am really disappointed with the arrangement of these tracks. Pretty stripped down .
