What a deep question. I gotta say YES, NO, and every emotion in between. I was in a bar in the Upper East Side New York called « Elaine’s », must have been 1982-83. This guy just walks in, alone, and starts playing on the piano, including this one in a very cool, slowed down version. So I say to my buddy: « This guy’s pretty good ». My friend looked at me dumbfounded « Man, that’s freaking Joe Jackson ». I’d never heard of him. Been a fan ever since.

Man, after all these years, he's still got it. That song's still got it. It moves something in my soul, almost brings me back to a simpler, happier time when everyone I love was still alive.
I remember being 3 years old when this song came out. The music was on the radio non stop in my parents house that we would dance to. Joe Jackson didn't get a lot of credit for his talents. I was not at all surprised but very happy when it appeared on GTA Vice City soundtrack. This defined the 80's

idk man; maybe its late, maybe I'm hyper-sensitive but this video just made me happy almost to the point of tears. I spent all day with the melody stuck in my head and for the life of me could not remember the actual title of the track. So for this moment and for your beautiful gift that made it happen: thank you so much Sir Jackson.
This is one of the most perfect songs. I have no real nostalgic connection to it, but it's just a fantastic vibe. The electric piano chords are such innovative voicings, paired with a driving bass, and the glockenspiel sitting over the top of them. It's just a magical song.
Yeah, you don't just come up with those voicings without a hell of a lot of classical/jazz experience. You hear this kind of thing in background parts played by a lot of studio guys, but never as the front-and-center instrument to rock/pop. Pop stars just don't write this kind of stuff! Only the fringy, heady stuff like JJ, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and their ilk. The "anti-punks". Is it prog? Maybe (JJ has obviously dipped his toe into the progrock mode more than once), but more specifically, it's a lot of formal training.
I have loved Joe Jackson since I cannot remember, am 53 now. Being an East Berliner I remember dancing to this in the Franzz Klub in 1986 with my sister. Stuck behind the iron curtain Joe Jackson was one of the freshest and most inspiring rushes of freedom feeling imho. Hell yeah, he still is!

He shure has aged must be 70+ now😊
I was 7 years old when this song came out ... I love it!
I am from mexico
If you're not Gen X, If you didn't grow up as a latch key kid, if you didn't ride the bus to school and sneak out on your skateboard to see your girlfriend across town at midnight... you can't truly appreciate this song. Completely engrossing and transforming.
This urban 80's song never gets old and it never will like with most if not all 80's music. 80's music certainly beats any trash being played on the radio today.
Absolutely refreshing. Sounds like it's a beautiful day in the 80's.
Joe's voice hasn't aged. 👍
i heard this on my car radio when i was coming home from a visit to the optometrist this afternoon....i'd heard it many times before...i'm 71....but this time i became very emotional. i wasn't sure why other than i love the sound.....but then it flashed thru my mind that music is something that makes civilization, CIVILIZATION.....that humanity has to make music. that drive is divine (i'm an atheist) and it's innate to our species....i knew this before but this time it was like a bolt of lightning..
Joe Jackson.... so beautiful. I still see my mom twirling about the living room to this song
Saw this tour when it came through Los Angeles at the Orpheum. Was astounded at how tight and how good Joe and the band sounded. Looking sharp.
In 1985 I was 15 years old and some "older friends" take me home after some Tennis matches...On our way back home they played Steppin Out very loud in the car radio , it was the Night & Day cassette ....What can I say, 35 years later and I am a Classic Rock Freak !
THis is NEW WAVE babe
Looks great, sounds great. What a gem.
So proud of my country’s 80’s artists😍 🏴🇬🇧
I heard this on the radio when I was like five and finally heard it again on Spotify yesterday.
Love this record brings so many memories back for me when i was 21 years old. Happy times back then, wished I could go back to that time with all my friends miss those great days in the eighties.
I was maybe 6 when this song got stuck in my head. MTV played the shit out of the video. It’s still stuck in my head.
I LOVE JOE JACKSONS' VOICE! THIS IS SUCH A SEXY SONG!
Always loved this song. The eighties had some great music.

This song is actually BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Loved it in the 80's.
Love this presentation with the old instruments, synthesizers and especially the drum machine lol.
Great fun to watch. This is one of my favorite songs. Why can't there be any great artists and songs today? Today's music is crap.
Joe has still got it! Sounds amazing.

This song is the personification of the greatness the 80s was all about.
