From what I've read they improved multiplayer a lot, by that point I already lost interest. Diablo 4 has an incredible art style, a great soundtrack and the combat mechanics are fun, but the character builds are lackluster compared to D2 where you could do some really whacky things with the correct gear. I haven't played D4 since season 1. Maybe now it has more depth.

    Notice how so many franchises seemed to peaked around the mid 2000's. I think it's because gaming was a growing industry but not quite as large as it is now. It was more about building and growing franchises than appeasing shareholders. I consider myself lucky that I was a teenager at that time and got to experience that era at that age.

    • @wtfiswiththosehandles
      @wtfiswiththosehandles Před 3 měsíci +16

      I think it's because gaming was for enthusiasts until 2010 or so, then it became mainstream and casual. Games used to be hard and interesting, now they're mostly bland and easy. At least the ones from major developers. Lucky for us we have a huge indie game market these days, thanks to holy Gaben.

    • @contramundi1
      @contramundi1 Před 3 měsíci +16

      guess what became popular around that time... social media. gaming was a relatively niche market that didn't have a huge following aside from actual gamers. then social media became a thing and all the casuals were introduced to gaming. it went from niche to mainstream in a few years. the thing with niche markets is that quality is paramount. selling bad quallity to a small audience has huge reprecusions. selling bad quality to a massive audience not as much. I think that is why gaming sucks these days.

      The people that complain about the state of the gaming industry today vs 30 years ago is just an anhedonic curmudgeon wearing rose covered glasses and disillusioning themselves with the nostalgia. video games were not a niche market in the 90s and 00s, there's a reason the PS2 is still the best selling console of all time even though it was the PS3 generation that was introduced with social media. It only seemed niche to you at the time because you were a child. Gaming doesn't suck today, your ability to enjoy things in life does though

    In a world where a franchise like Dark Souls has taken off and become so beloved, I'm genuinely surprised that Ninja Gaiden hasn't re-emerged. The controls for that game felt a little clunky and the enemies and level design were incredibly unforgiving, but much like dark souls, once you kind of figured things out and stuff clicked into place you were like "Actually, this has to be one of the best action games I've ever played."

      Agreed. It's not like Volition put that game out without knowing what people were saying about it. It got badmouthed from the very start and they persisted in "no, you are all wrong, this will be awesome, shut up" then were surprised when everyone who said they thought it would suck said it sucked.
      Different from even something like Aliens: Colonial Marines or even The Last of Us 2, which faced backlash for the opposite reason (devs outright lied in trailers to make the game look better or different to what it was), so players were taken by surprise when they got something they didn't like.

By reskinning it and calling it Silent Hill, they gave it a big reputation to live up to which was unfair all things considered. Yup, I surely remember having to execute enemies in order to get the ammo and health that spewed forth --- oh, wait, that never happened in Doom before.
      Enemies being able to leap all around the stage and follow the player anywhere?
      Nope! That wasn't there either.
      As for Doom 3, I stand by what it did, I think it's superb.
      Whether or not the changes to the Doom formula made by 2016 and Eternal were good isn't my issue, it's the double standard where Thief was unfairly criticized when it didn't really make such drastic changes as new Doom did.

    For me, for the Saints Row games it was the fourth one, I'd get quite far but it doesn't matter how many times I start over, I end up losing complete interest in the game, I think it was because there were way too many side missions, with some getting really hard and the red door story mission being glitched so I could never get all the achievements. The insane amount blue lights you had to go to and the false sense of security it gave you that the game might be broken in this area too so you always feel it might end up being impossible to get them all.

Complete shift in from fantasy to post apocalyptic, limited magic, turning into a dragon actually starts a game over timer making you have to restart the game multiple times to get more time as a dragon. Then there's the old RE style of saving, just this time with a payphone and coins. Ugh. Ruined the series. There was a 6, but it was a Japan only MMO kind of deal. I agree with nearly all your points. My only disagreement is your take on Dead Rising. DR1 was groundbreaking, amazingly fun, and frustratingly hard all at the same time. Finding stuff around the mall and discovering how each handles in combat rewarded exploration. Having to keep up on a strict mission schedule was cool but felt overwhelming when coupled with all the side encounters and constant radio calls but honestly the whole time management thing was part of the charm of that entry. The main story being serious with survivor encounters being a grab bag of silly or brutal psycho made meeting them interesting and scary at the same time. Now if you ask me, DR2 did a lot of things right. It introduced the idea of combining weapons to make really cool and fun McGuiver style weapons which was a huge staple in zombie movies that no one realized was lacking in the formula until they had it. Transitioning the time management to focus on zombrex as well as being late helped mantain a sense of urgency while cutting down on the number of encounters to feel more manageable. The story was cool, focusing on a more personal story while also showing off what our society would be like once we became accustomed to the idea that zombies are just apart of everyday life now. DR2 introduced a lot of cool ideas and still maintained this identity of being stuck in a hopeless world, surrounded by tragedy and struggling strangers, where your only means of survival was dependent on your creativity. For me DR3 is where the framchise peaked. It made for an excellent launch title, showing off all sorts of cool ideas like the best smartglass integration of xbox games and vehicle combos. The graphics were amazing without bogging down the system and they introduced so many new weapon combinations with the ability to build them on the fly. The characters were a great balance of memorable, satire, and weird. The story was fun and well paced, had fun beats and was actually engaging. The leveling system was awesome because it actually was given depth beyond level milestone perks. It was just bursting with originality and good ideas. DR4 is where it kind of just gave up. There wasn't really anything new going on at all. No new ideas outside of a limited time exosuit that felt more uninspired than intended. Like they were trying to recapture the first game without understanding what made the series fun in the first place. It straight up has the same feeling as the saints row reboot.

    2nd: Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is one of my all-time favorite games, period.
    3rd: I received one of the reboot Medal of Honor games for Christmas one year. I want to say it was the first one. I really enjoyed it, and it has a special place in my heart. I got that instead of the new Call of Duty because we were relatively poor and MoH was like $20 at the time, and the new CoD was $60. My mom looked and said, same same...but I knew it was different. Still enjoyed it.

    As a huge Need for Speed fan as a kid, it’s a shame how far that franchise has fallen. The trifecta that was Underground 1, Underground 2 and Most Wanted 05 was the absolute peak of not just Need for Speed, but arcade racing games as a whole during its run, regardless of whether you were a PS2 or Xbox kid. Carbon was okay, but the lack of car variety made it suffer a little bit, Shift was a wrong turn for the franchise but was good enough, the only thing that saved Undercover is the fact that it was one of the first arcade racing games to have both the Koenigsegg CCX and the Bugatti Veyron, which any car enthusiast knows that those two companies were at war in the 2000’s for both the top speed record and space in our hearts, and then it just went downhill from there. EA honestly should’ve did what Rockstar Games did with Midnight Club did and left on a high note after Carbon

    I would also add the Lego games. I used to find them relaxing, but then they became about doing nothing but collecting. The earlier games about 40-50% of the games were story missions and the rest collecting to get 100%. Then by the time Lego Super Heroes 2 came out the story missions were about 30% of the game then run around and collect to get the 100% On top of having to collect gold bricks you know now had to collect 10 things to collect a gold brick. So now I'm collecting so I can collect things. Had enough.

I know people were sour on Batman Arkham Knight because of the over reliance on the Batmobile (which is greatly over exaggerated imo) and some elements of the plot like the Arkham Knight’s identity not being completely satisfying, but goddamn if that game wasn’t made with so much heart and passion and otherwise perfects pretty much everything else the Arkham games did up to that point.
