That's the way shelters are and why most homeless people refuse to stay there. I've been to several shelters and the worst one (Salvation Army) was like a cult. If you didn't 100% comply with their religious nonsense, you were practically bullied out of the program by the staff. You had to dedicate your life to their organization. While you were encouraged to look for work and housing, they held you back by demanding you "volunteer" most of the day (4-8 hours/day) to keep the shelter running. Religion based shelters are a scam. We need non-religious based programs to help the poor and homeless. Too bad there are none or very few.

During the pandemic my family was homeless and staying at the SA. I got a job that paid enough to help us get our own place. When they told me I couldn't work those type of hours because of curfew, I left. My 4 children and I stayed in a studio bedroom hotel for 2yrs. I was forced out of there and landed in a 2 bedroom /1bath apartment. I was trying to buy a house but wasn't ready financially yet for that. The realtor I was working with helped me get into the apartment.

True ! Quite a few homeless people, especially seniors, really hate being homeless, and are on waiting lists for affordable, and the wait takes years, because of the permanent housing shortage, not enough apartments and houses for average renters to be able to rent. This tendency by officials and police to lump all homeless people together, as all trouble makers, is an urban legend. It would surprise people to know that many hidden homeless people, are forced to exist in uncomfortable conditions, and are always trying to get out of the homeless trap, that high rents ( due to not enough housing stock) created.

Due to increasing costs of housing more people are homeless now than we have seen in a very long time. So to answer the problems put everyone on perpetual well fare?
If this is the best solution you can possibly think of instead of stabilizing the economy and controlling immigration to help lower food and housing costs to prevent people from being in the shelters in the first place you are delusional.
I live in Canada we don't have free Healthcare we have universal hathcare it is paid out of taxes and is a decent system, but it's a govermnet system from the ground up and it's struggling lately because our goverment prioritizes burning tax dollars and crippling industry instead of coming from a reasonable and rational position.

      @@leonkennedy9739 sure thing.
Medical expenses are only one of the things leading to homelessness. I've chosen to advocate for this when I realized that so many countries have it and I had literally lived 50 years or so before I knew how widespread it was and how effective it was, and that by obfuscation and propaganda most Americans were just like me.
No one has ever really been suggesting "free healthcare." I used to use the term "universal healthcare" until the Dems made it a thing to say "Medicare for all". I hate the name, but it's recognizable, other people are supporting it, and I'm not going to try to reinvent the wheel.
Over the last few years, since the last presidential campaign, I've explained to people online how universal healthcare is set up. I'm also aware of some of the problems with the healthcare systems in Canada, the UK, and Australia. It's a constant fight in every country to guard our citizens' best interests.

Seattle has become something of a nightmare in a movie that we used to watch with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it now has become a reality in the streets. I used to love visiting Seattle’s downtown area and the fish market. I wouldn’t even go down there anymore. it’s a shame such a beautiful city, the Emerald City is pretty tarnished now. Good people have no options. 😢😢

The easiest way to end the pain( of not having your own home) is to rebuild the housing stock in America to what it was, before homelessness kicked in around 1980. Because in the 60's and 70's, there was virtually no homelessness. Anyone who can attend City Council meetings, can insist that the leaders on the City Council, allow affordable housing to be both permitted and created.

I so often realize how fortunate I was to live in a safe Montreal suburb with a stable family in the 50's and 60's. I never even saw anyone drunk and illicit drugs weren't available. It's too easy to judge when you've never even seen the problem in your life. I cringe when I imagine growing up in today's world with crime and drugs rampant ... and the media eager to exploit every horrific situation to get views.

I am homeless as well trying to get a valid ID so I can get a job but no place wants to help me , can’t get food stamps nothing so the only other way os to start a gofundme in hopes that you can get enough to eat everyday & to get a ID & a job so you can support yourself without needing help from anyone
but as this lady said it’s almost like they do not want to help you get back on your feet because they will not get paid themselves if you do
most people do not understand this because they have not been in this situation but they will tell you what you are doing wrong & how to do it
