@@TomYawns I'm from London, same thing growing up hearing a lot of accents. Amusingly, linguists are finally waking up and realizing the local accent has changed and replaced cockney. As a kid, cockney was how my Dad his family talked from east London. But most of us didn't talk like that. It's been named Multicultural London English. Which makes it sound a lot flashier than it is. If you look at cockney, it was the result of the same thing. Lots of immigrants. MLE is just a shift more towards Jamaican and Indian as they came in large numbers starting in the 60s. Three generations later and the accent has transformed faster than typical for the UK.

The word pound derives from the latin “libra pondo”, hence the abbreviation lbs.
In many countries with Romance languages (like Portugal, Spain and Italy), we still use the word libra to refer to pounds. Funny enough, we actually use the metric system.

Chai Tea like I said, the word used to refer to pounds is libra. It may have confused you, because I used the plural in English and the singular in Portuguese/Spanish. But, just like in English, most of the times all you have to do is ad an “s” to get the plural - libras. Hope you get my explanation now.

The abbreviation "lb" comes from the Roman unit of weight called "libra" (also known as the "Roman pound".
In addition, if you go all the way back to the Latin word "uncia" meaning "one twelfth", you can get to two English units of measurement:
Latin "uncia" -> Middle French "once" -> Middle English "unce" or "ounce" -> Modern English "ounce"
Latin "uncia" -> Old English "ynce" -> Middle English "enche" or "ynche" -> Modern English "inch"
Before anyone says it, the original Latin unit "uncia", was equal to 12 "librae" (Roman pounds). I'm perfectly aware that the modern "ounce" is 1/16th of a modern "pound".
And if you thought "uncia" both being the source of "inch" _and_ "ounce" were "exciting"....
Latin "libra" is survived from the Ancient Greek word "λίτρα" (or "lítra" in the Latin/"English" alphabet), which essentially, as you may have worked out, leads to the English unit "liter"/"litre" (depending on how you spell it locally).
In short... "inch" and "ounce" both come from "uncia". "Liter"/"litre" is related to "libra".

Pronunciation though:- funniest I saw was a New Zealand ambulance program, and the medics were called to a child run over on her bike by a car...
1st thing the medic asked was, “Are you dead?”. Paused that right away, rewound, as my good lady & I looked at each other in shock, replayed, without pausing, and it went,
    “Are you Dead?”
“Yes,” the father replies, “I’m dad [pronounced dead]”
Paused again while we cried with laughter.
