    This channel is the best one on drugs of the hundreds there are on YT. I have three things to talk about or express :
    1) You mentioned Ezitimibe blocking the *dietary cholesterol* what about the one created by the liver automatically, does that mean that ezetimibe can't block the cholesterol that our livers produce ?
    2) It's funny how easily we at India can grab any drug without any prescription at 1/50th the price in US. I self change and try drugs on myself being a testing space. I got a combination of Rosuvastatin and Ezetimibe (10 mg each) for $1.50 for a strip of ten tablets. So, Simvastatin is the only drug that is used in combination with Zetia alone.
    Lastly,
    3) You have an amazingly sexy voice and I am not actually hiting on you ( I think i am !) , And Thank you very much for this elaborate explanation. God bless you.

    • @DrugChug
      @DrugChug  Před 4 lety +5

      Great Questions!
      1.) That is correct. Ezetimibe only affects dietary cholesterol. That is why we typically use it with a statin. That way the ezetimibe blocks the dietary absorbtion, while the statin blocks the production of cholesterol (we target both pathways).
      2.) Yeah that is crazy about the price of drugs around the world. And the only combo product is Vytorin in America (Ezetimibe + Simvastatin). You can take Ezetimibe with any other statin, but the drug companies have only done trials with simvastatin to be able to make this combo product specifically.
      3.) And thank you! I'll keep making more of these videos then!

    If the drug is blocking intestine uptake of LDL, why is it taken at bedtime? Breakfast, lunch and dinner are long gone by then. A sincere question.

    • @DrugChug
      @DrugChug  Před 4 lety +8

      Great Question! @ Canada Calling
      Yes you can take this medication at anytime because the half life of Zetia is about 22 hours, which means it only requires once a day dosing.
      However, if a patient is also taking a statin (which is a high probability) it is best to take this medication with the statin and this is where we can see a preference on when to take the medication:
      If a patient takes a night time statin, such as simvastatin, then they should take Zetia + Simvistatin at bedtime (Again only because the Simvastatin has a short half-life and cholesterol synthesis happens at night.
      We even see the combo product Vytorin which has Zetia + Simvastatin.
      But if a patient takes Zetia with a long acting statin (Like Atorvastatin) then they may take it at any time of the day!
      Hope this clears things up! :)

  • @cdinaz
    @cdinaz Před 11 dny

    So a phytosterol hyperabsorber would not benefit from zetia then - someone with variations in the SNPs for ABCG5 and G8 receptors? Fatigue, loose stool and nausea may be common but those are NOT small side effects. If you had those without the meds you would be trying to figure out WTH is wrong. HMG CoA reductase (mevalonate pathway) being disrupted also reduces production of MK4, geranylgeraniol and CoQ10. So perhaps doubling down on living better should prevail over meds.

      @@markthurlow6223 Sorry to hear that, but we all know that the medical industrial complex does very little in the way prevention. My cardiologist told me to start taking statins. I told him I wanted to try lifestyle changes first or else I'll never know if they did anything or if it was the statins. I'm muscular, 6' 195, so not obese or out of shape and always ate a "clean" diet. I changed my diet and lowered my LDLs over 25% in 3 months. There are foods that raise cholesterol and others that help lower it. Red meat, whole eggs, whole dairy, etc. are all "healthy" foods, but I reduced my intake of them by 90% added ground flax seed to my daily oatmeal, started using plant stanol spread instead of butter and increased the amount of cardio over a day that I was doing. Everyone is different, but I wanted to see if the changes would work for me before committing to a life of drug use. Glad I did.
