As ever, a huge thank you to everyone at Atarimania and Atari Legend for their amazing work:

Recorded at 50fps using a real Atari 1040 STe (4mb, TOS v1.62, PAL), RGB SCART, a Micomsoft X-Sync1 and a Startech PexHDcap capture card.
This is basically an 8-bit game ported to the ST.
But that doesn't matter because the responsive gameplay and tactics give it enough enjoyment for you to want to go back to this game time and time again.
One of my favourites!
I'll take responsive and 8-bit over clunky, awkward and 16-bit any day!
Easily my all time favorite basketball game of all time. I loved it since day one. I played many many many games against the AI and against friends. Both on my ST and on their CPC. We even played "cups" between us with games split between my stadium (ST) and their stadium (CPC).
I LOVE this game.
The things you perhaps had problems with (screen and other tactics, shooting) work fine, if you know how they work. Unless of course this is a beta release or something.
You can also ask for time-out which can be helpful when you need to save time, but of course there is a limit in how many times you can.
I think you did fine for your first game. The game is superb. Heck, I even streamed the game on Twitch a few years ago lol.
There are moves you haven't seen, I don't know what they are called in English so I am not going to try.
OK u found the instructions. :)
Glad u found this awesome game.
:)
enjoy!
So cool to think of you all huddled around the ST taking turns to play each other in a cup. It must have been thrilling. The only time I experienced anything like that was at university where we would play Total Soccer tournaments on the Playstation.
Thanks for the tips, I'll bear them in mind for when I return. Which might be sooner rather than later if the other ST basketball games prove to be of Tip Off's level of quality.
The manual for this game is truly superb. Serves as a nice introduction to basketball, let alone the game.
Thanks for watching!
DOUBLE DRIBBLE was in the arcades in 1986. ported to (and ubiquitous/popular on) the NES the following year. a surprisingly decent 5-on-5 game with close-up cut-ins on big dunks. very flickery tho.
Huh... I haven't played that. I'll have a wee look. Thanks for the recommendation.
Back in the days this was one of the best sport games for the ST. Later I like NBA on the Jaguar, so the this ST game is a little bit forgotten. Nice video.
I was surprised. I thought it was going to be a lot worse. It's basic, for sure. But what it does, it does well. I haven't played NBA Jam on the Jaguar. Good version?
@@thejoyofsticks I like the moves and samles in NBA a lot (Boom Shaka Lakka!). I always play with Indiana Pacers because they had Detlev Schrempf the only German in the NBA before Dirk Novitski.
I used to like Schrempf too. One of those no-nonsense all fundamentals players. I always appreciate those. Dirk is an absolute legend, though. The best one-footed fade-away in NBA history! :D What current German players are there? I know the Knicks have Isiah Hartenstein (dad is German) and he's been an absolute godsend for us this season when Mitchell Robinson has been injured. We brought him in as a backup and I've never seen him play a bad game in a Knicks uniform.
Nice little game for 1986. I think it was one of the very first games I played on my Atari ST back then.
A few people have mentioned this as an early ST game for them. Those games will always be special to me: Real Ghostbusters, Populous, Super Sprint, Whirligig, Hard Drivin'.. great memories, even if the games weren't the best.
Not a fan of many sports games, other than a bit of golf, or footfall management, but nice to hear your thoughts.
As you say a little simple for a full priced game. Maybe as budget title it might had been ok.
Good video as always mate
Thanks Adam! You are right. This is way better than Tip Off, but maybe a little sparse for a full price game. It started to overstay its welcome after a couple of quarters, to be honest. Still, add a few mates for a knockout cup and I can imagine having a great time with this.
Another cracking review, cant say I have heard of this one, but I actually like the graphics :] thanks again brother
The graphics suit the game perfectly. Simple, uncluttered but practical. You are most welcome, our kid!
Glad you gave this a try! Really think it was one of the best sports games on the ST. Maybe that's not saying much. I think there was a bit of a hidden cheat where if you go to the top of the circle, just directly to the right and you did a jump shot, it went in a lot of the time. This was seen at 8:08 in your video. Otherwise this one really has it all - both offensive and defensive moves, crisp teamwork passing and scoring, solid defense. Stealing the ball from an opponent felt "right" as in it wasn't exploited like in other basketball games.
I don't think I managed a steal as I was playing, so I guess that's about right. They are free and far between in a real game! Modern basketball games offset the player spamming steal by awarding fouls, but I find that frustrating when the ball is right there for there taking. I think you should just over extend, allowing the attacking player to get by you.
12:50 I like bassy farts 🙂
I was bummed there wasn't a good basketball game for the ST. Back in the 90s basketball was very popular in Greece. This seems kind of playable but it has nothing on one on one on the Atari 8-bit.
I used to play a nice basketball game on my friends 286. I thin it was tv sports.
Yes, it's a real shame. There aren't many genres that don't have a good example on the ST. At least this is half decent.
I remember Greece being a formidable team at one point, but I haven't seen much from you recently. How do you rate your chances of making waves at the Olympics? Is Giannis playing?
@@thejoyofsticks he is probably not. We will probably qualify for the Olympics but we won't go very far there.
We haven't had a big success since 2005 when we reached the world cup final after defeating the US. We also won the Eurovision that year....
Well the year before we won the Euro but there are lots of great football games on the ST.
Anyway European basketball is dead ever since they made the Euro League. There is no incentive to invest for any team not on the Euro league and national championships have become irrelevant.
Can't believe they sold this for $40 🤑 The graphics are pretty basic, but it looks nicer and is better animated than Tip Off. You get a genuine basketball feel from the gameplay. Actually feeling in control of the action is what makes this a good game. I can clearly appreciate why this was popular all the way back in 1986. 😎
Right!? The feel of a sports game is so important. At least this has some dynamism and is quick and responsive to control. The ability to box out, set screens and the manual at least suggest the developer was a basketball fan.
Okay..Are we likely to see any pvp Lemmings here?.
Not very into sports game, but this looks pretty decent and even looks decent. Especially for such an early game!
Yes! I was surprised by how good it was. Very basic, and I got a bit bored by half time, but I'll take boredom over Tip Off's disgust! 🤣
@@thejoyofsticks Yeah, the pants level was strong with Tip Off! 😄
Not one that i played or heard of back in the day ..may have dodged a bullet !!!
Well... I'd rather have got hit by this bullet than a Tip Off bullet, that's for sure! 🤣💀
@thejoyofsticks oh dear what have we become 😆
