26:38 wow they went to a lot of trouble to make that whole practice mode. That is a truly bizarre way to spend your development resources. Great video thanks!
I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back when it came to my opinions of this game. Just baffling. Why would anyone want to practice a different game to get good at this one? Utterly bizarre. And you are right: they would have had to code an entirely different engine and draw entirely new graphics for it! Imagine if they'd spent those resources on improving the main game.
That 90% Amiga review 😂😂🤣.. Nothing changes much til this day.. Great video @Mark and have a great week ALL 💯👍
:D Definitely some money changing hands for that one. No way can you play this and give it 9/10. Unreal.
Thanks for the kind words! Hope the week is kind to you too.
GBA seems to be the only other traditional basketball game on the ST, but it’s only 2v2. There seems to be something called Basket Manager but is that just a management sim? Still, it’s fun to see what the ST had. I can’t believe it never got a TV Sports Basketball port!
Basket Manager? :D Now that's something I've got to try.
We did get TV Sports Football, but not basketball. I think the lack of popularity of the ST as a games machine in the US meant fewer US sports games.
Ah yes, the other "Off" game.. in more ways than one!
Just like you, wanted so much to like this gane back then...nope. =)
If Dino Dini had done it, it might have been better. You've given me the idea to survey all the Basketball games take recessed across Atari classic platforms for my next video!
I was going to do Baseball, but Basketball games are much more rare. Baseball has to be done on a platform by platform basis.
I would love to see a basketball roundup video! Unfortunately, I'm not sure that the Atari platforms had the best when it came to US sports simulations. I half remember a decent baseball game on the ST... RBI Baseball? And TV Sports Football was good for the occasional play.
@@thejoyofsticks RBI Baseball decent? Ha. Unfortunately, it's another Tip-Off except for baseball. I remember buying it and the dealer actually allowed me to return it because it was so bad. Apparently, the copy I bought was a returned-returned-returned copy because no one liked it. Even the dealer didn't like it but stocked it because people were desperate for a baseball game on the ST. It's so disappointing that the ST never got decent American sports games (except TV Sports Football). Yet, there were plenty of soccer games...
Maybe you're thinking of Hardball? That was decent, but kind of old by the 1990s. With numerous more sophisticated sports games on the other platforms, I was just hoping for even just one to be ported to the ST. We got it in form of a lackluster RBI Baseball. I remember it was impossible to get even a single. In real baseball, hitting the ball to the outfield was 99% a single. In RBI Baseball, the outfielder can throw out the runner at 1st base every time. Frustrating. Of course, the publishers will claim that they don't make these types of games for the ST because of piracy. I say write a better game and it will sell better.
Oh no! A case of the rose-tinted spectacles I guess. Maybe I should just leave the pleasant memories and not give it another go. I love the idea of the yo-yo game that just keeps coming back to the store.
I always enjoyed GBA two-on-two basketball. Was more like a collegiate level instead of pro sports (no license). The controls were tight and gameplay was solid on offense and defense. The play selection was basic but it worked. Sometimes less is more with sports titles. The Front Page Sports series later on the PC was very good, too.
That's great to hear. I'll have to give it a try myself. "Sometimes less is more" - you are so right.
ran across the CU AMIGA write-up earlier this week. reads kinda like they had to balance out a pre-written glowing review after playing the finished product. couldn't get through it without a harlem globetrotters reference, either; includes a still of thomas gomez as coach abe saperstein in the '50s movie. scored high at 78%.
Right? Definitely some weird things going on at some magazines around this time. Thankfully, this week's game (uploading now) has a couple of the best game reviews I've seen for the ST.
S.Coppell was a reference to Steve Coppell, who was the Crystal Palace manager at the time. Steve Screech was a big Palace fan.
I thought I recognised the name! Cheers, man! 👍
Basketball with Football field dimensions. Thanks for the video.
It's bizarre. It's like they designed it after watching a few minutes of a basketball game once about 10 years ago, but was a little bit drunk.
The 99% of the others "cheap" games on your possession compensate this expensive one... But when you are kid, you just can't think that way for sure, Karma Bro !! My bought was happier : B.A.T, F19 stealth fighter and that's all for what I remember ; )
Maybe it *was* karma from the piracy gods? I never thought of it that way before. :D Thinking about it, my hit rate wasn't too bad...
Stinkers:
- Final Fight
- Tip Off
- Street Fighter 2
- Vigilante
Winners:
- Championship Manager 93
- Sensible Soccer
- Elite 2: Frontier
- Lure of the Temptress
- Dogs of War
I'm not really interested in sports games old or new, I love your relaxed retro gaming vibes, Marc :)
Well, if you have no interest in the game but still enjoy watching, I feel like I must be doing something right! Thanks for the kind words. 👍
I did not know this game at all. Thank for that fun video!
You are most welcome. I’m glad it was fun for someone! 😅
@@thejoyofsticks Ahaha not the best Atari ST game ever indeed. I remember playing GBA Championship Basketball Two on Two back then and somehow having fun with it.
I might give that one a try next.
Populous, and Dire Straits - Brother In Arms album are indelibly linked for me. I bought Tip Off, remember excitedly reading the manual on the bus on way home and taking it back to refund/swap the next day. I never got to finish a game.
Excellent! Dire Straits and Populous! Now there's a high quality duo. I used to play Populous while listening to Talk Radio (which was actually pretty good in the early days... or maybe I was just too young to judge).
@@thejoyofsticks It's an obvious one, but for me it was Outrun with the soundtrack cassette that came with it. Played both to death! I didn't know any better at the time 😁
@@salem_ok6732 That was so cool. I can even feel the squeak of the plastic insert tray that held the disk in one side and the tape in the other.
@@thejoyofsticks For me was the smell opening a brand new box of disks, printed in my brain for ever I guess
Love a basket ball game ,as for kick off extra time wow ..but so hard to play now jesus ! Any way get back down the blues now 💙..Barry fry days are back for 1 year only lol ...great vid as usual, marc ...yes music and gaming together ...i used to listen to platoon song movie sound track when playing sensible soccer lol ..
The crashes 💣 💣 💣 💣 love it
Yes! Kick Off is difficult, but so rewarding! I can't see Tip Off ever rewarding the time spent to learn its foibles.
Gutted about the Blues. Last time we dropped into League 1, I bought a season ticket and continued to be a season ticket holder for the next couple of decades. I'm sorely tempted to get one again.
Platoon and Sensi? Now there's an interesting mix! :D
🤣
Excellent, as always \o/
Cheers, Adam! Thanks for watching!
did you ever read SLAM DUNK? a weekly basketball newspaper. published in 1994/'95 or so.
No, I didn't. If my local newsagent had stocked it, I'd have snapped it up. I would read some Slam magazine later on, though.
It doesn't look as bad as it could be - nuts controls though, that don't seem to reflect the manual lol
Genuinely one of the most bizarre control schemes I've ever encountered.
didn't the atari have Double Dribble? that was my favourite basketball game on the amiga.
No, we didn't get that on the ST for some reason. Thanks to your comment, I've had a look at a video on CZcams and it looks pretty decent. It looks like NBA Jam might have taken a bit of inspiration from it.
God those controls! So ludicrously over-complicated. How is anyone supposed to remember all that in the middle of a game? Madness!
I just don't understand why they were even added. When you think of the dynamism and thrills of a basketball videogame, do you stop and think "I wish I could control my players pivot"? Insane.
"insert disk in drive DF0"... they did not even change the Amiga lingo text for the ST version :D
Can't say much about the game since i don't like sports games unless they are futuristic, the graphics did look nice though :)
Maybe that's the problem? A quick and shoddy port that is missing a lot of the features of the original?
Have you played Hewson's Future Basketball? Is that any good? There must be at least one half decent basketball game on the ST.
I'll be honest, I never cared for Kick Off and I don't see why this would be any worse just by looking. I'll take your word for it though 😁
The control scheme is the major reason. It's so unresponsive and baffling. The other reason is that it just doesn't feel like basketball. Kick Off had the unmistakeable joy of scoring a brilliant goal. Few other games matched it for that.
if you stream on twitch, what is your name there? thx
I've only ever done one stream on twitch, but if I ever do again it will be under the same name: www.twitch.tv/thejoyofsticks nothing there at the mo.
It was a very disapointing game for me when it came out, as a hughe fan of Kick Off I expected a great basketball game (finally!) by Anco for the ST, but… no. The players are ridicously small, or the playfield is incredibly hughe 😂 I didn’t like the game mechanics and the playability. I never found a good basketball game for Atari ST, and it’s a pity.
I take some solace in knowing that I wasn't the only ST owning basketball fan suffering at that time. Have you played GBA Basketball and Future Basketball? Those are the only other basketball games I've seen on the ST.
@@thejoyofsticks yeah. GBA was like an old 8 bit game, somethig to play with your spectrum, but far away to an ST game concept, and Future Basketball for me it’s an attempt to create an Speedball clone, it really looks cool, but I prefer to play the Bitmap Brothers One, nothing in common with basketball. And there’s also Basket Manager, it has (for me) the best match simulation part of all of this games.
I'll take a simple but well executed 8-bit basketball game over Tip Off, any day! :D You are the second to mention Basket Manager. I'm definitely going to give that a try.
Never was a fan of sports games. Play a game to play a game? The only arcade sports game I enjoyed was cyberball.
Play a game to play a game! Is never thought of it like that before! 🤣 It makes us sound so dorky. Instead of getting together with your mates and playing a real game of basketball, just sit alone in your room almost completely motionless for a couple of hours. 🤓
I haven't played Cyberball, I'll add it to the 'to play'' list.
This was on my list of ST games to try. It's not anymore after that! Seems like you need a degree in rocket science to understand the instructions. Had to laugh at the way it drained the life out of you! Hope you recover for the next video.
Oh no! I'm so sorry to wipe it off your list! 😂
I'm happy to hold my hands up and admit defeat when something is beyond my ken, but I genuinely think the manual is talking rot. Half of those control features were definitely not in the game. Fire button to change dribble speed? Nope. Press fire and hold left/right to pivot around in a circle? Nope. Move the cursor to increase shot accuracy for 2 seconds after shooting? Nope.
It was truly bizarre.
This game is way too ropey and clunky. 😧 You could forgive the lacklustre graphics and overall presentation if the gameplay was silky smooth and intuitive. It's the smooth, frenetic and responsive feel of Kick Off(1 & 2) that made it such a joy to play and get good at. Tip Off is uninspiring in every respect, so there's nothing that grabs you and keeps you coming back for more. It really could have been a fun companion to the Kick Off series' if the gameplay was more polished. Such a big fail. 👎
Clunky is the perfect adjective for it. The whole thing is clunky top to bottom. I think that's why it's so disappointing: its the antithesis of how Kick Off represented its sport. Kinetic, fluid, fast - not words you could use to describe Tip Off. Have you seen Anco's hockey sim, Face Off? That's more of the same, sadly.
@@thejoyofsticks I had forgotten about Face Off, but have vague memories of it being better than Tip Off, despite it also feeling quite clunky. I think I played it a few times with friends and didn't hate it. Maybe both games would have benefitted from Dino Dini's involvement, seeing he knew how to craft compulsive gameplay. His approach to making football games may have translated well to Basketball & Ice Hockey... but we'll never know. 😞
What a crappy game :-)
