The Grand Illusion is their biggest album but this one is a banger too. Hopefully you'll do this whole album.
Jim “JY” Young on lead guitar 🔥 for me one of the most overlooked and underrated guitarists of that era
Growing up in the 70s and 80s was just the best!
It's hilarious to see today's youth experience our freedom, innovation, and talent.
The 60s were pretty damn good too but yes the 70s and 80s were awesome
@@FUBAR1986 I always say the 60s/70s/80s music is the golden era. Being born in the 60s I'm so thankful to have experienced it & yes, growing up back then was awesome.
Styx - The Grand Illision was their biggest album.
Awesome reaction to one of my favorite bands! Please do more!!! Suite Madame Blue is right up your alley.
I've been a huge Styx fan since 1977. They have such a wide variety of song and music styles, and with 3 lead singers/songwriters(in each lineup) it multiplies that.
I really enjoyed your reaction to Boston's first album, and I agree with an earlier commenter that the album "THE GRAND ILLUSION" is worth listening/reacting to start to finish. Back in 1977 that's what we did for Album Oriented Rock. The last song (except the summary track) on The Grand Illusion album is a deep track but one of many fans favorites, "CASTLE WALLS" (as you can tell by my handle I think it's great).
Styx has such a deep catalog from hits to deep cut great songs - here are my suggestions for you to start with:
"Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue" - Dennis DeYoung, John Curulewski.
"Fooling Yourself" - Tommy Shaw.
"Come Sail Away" (Album version or live from 1996's Return To Paradise tour - NOT the Official Video which is short for MTV) - Dennis.
"Blue Collar Man" - Tommy.
"CASTLE WALLS" - Dennis.
"Man In The Wilderness" - Tommy.
"Queen Of Spades" - Dennis.
"Lady" - Dennis.
"Snowblind" - James "JY" Young and Tommy.
"Crystal Ball" - Tommy.
"A Day" - John Curulewski.
"Born For Adventure" - Dennis.
"Young Man" - JY.
"Pieces Of Eight" - Dennis.
"Lorelei" - JY and Dennis.
Thats a really good list and its great to see someone else who appreciates "A Day". Silas would/will love that middle break.
This band is a wild ride, Silas. Prepare yourself if you dive deeper! Don't just stick to the commercial hits either...they have plenty of material which is at least as good as their "greatest hits".
That being said, this IS one of their greatest commercial releases that charted.
Glad you discovered Styx, Silas! They put out some amazing tracks! 😎 Tommy Shaw (guitarist) sang lead on "Renegade" and I think you'll enjoy "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" from the same album, also featuring Tommy on lead vocals. Then check out "I'm O.K.", "The Grand Illusion" and "Come Sail Away" featuring and Dennis DeYoung (keyboards) singing lead.
Many a speeding ticket has been issued while this song played. Styx had so many member and they all wrote songs of different styles. Check out “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” from the same album. Then check out the album "The Grand Illusion" as others have said. Styx is an incredible band with a huge catalog.
too much time on my hands is my fav by them. Still are a great live band to see! i’m sure you have been asked this
April Wine “Roller “ official music video. triple guitar attack! they don’t block their music
I don't know if Styx had one standout song, just a bunch of great songs: Blue Collar Man, Pieces of Eight, The Grand Illusion, Queen of Spades, Miss America, Crystal Ball, Suite Madam Blue is what I'd recommend.
I would say the three biggest hits were Come Sail Away, Lady, Lorelei or whatever that song is called, and this one. I like a lot of their other stuff though, and Suite Madam Blue was a favorite of mine in junior high.
Styx had a lot of really good songs through the years. With the Paradise Theater Album however, their style began to change and they lost me. To this day I only listen to their older tracks.
I love your enthusiasm Silas. Reminds me of me first hearing this masterpiece. You need to do this whole album as well as the Grand Illusion.
Come Sail Away, Lady, Lorelei, Fooling Yourself, Suite Madame Blue, Too Much Time on My Hands, and Grand Illusion are also well-known and very good songs by Styx
Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Styx had three lead singers. Tommy Shaw (this song), Dennis DeYoung and James Young. Tommy and James sing rockers and Dennis sings the ballads and pop songs. They have decades worth of music all worth checking out. This band is worth giving the Boston Treatment, meaning start with their early music and work your way forward. Lady was their first single and it was released independently and without a record company pushed by local radio dj's. Enjoy the ride. Chris
Agreed!
Listen to more Styx!!!
Dennis wrote and sang plenty of "Rockers" too. VH-1's "Behind The Music" did a grave disservice to Styx and perpetuated this unfortunate myth. Dennis is the one that turned "Renegade" from a slow, brooding, bluesy song (when Tommy first presented it to the band) into one of their best "Rockers", not Tommy, not JY.
Not knocking Dennis, but personally I prefer the songs Tommy wrote and sung. Its still ice cream. Chocolate or Vanilla are an opinion, neither is wrong or right. :) I have seen Styx every decade since the 70's with pretty much every line up except the original one. Great band. But once again, I prefer the Tommy songs. :) Chris
@@chrisbricky7331 I love the TS songs too and I think Styx would have greatly benefited if they would have stayed more in that direction.
Actually, their first 4 albums were released by Wooden Nickel Records which was founded in 1971. In 2005 they released "The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings", a 2 CD set that included Styx, Styx II, The Serpent Is Rising, and Man Of Miracles. Lady is on Styx II. Great deep cuts on all 4 albums, but The Serpent Is Rising is my all time favorite!
Styx are among the gods of Rock n' Roll!!! Great reaction!!! They are one of my favorite Rock bands!!!!!
It’s great when you young people like the music of our time. 70, 80 . A lot of their music will push you against the wall. They have been making albums like this from late 70 til now.
The Styx are one of my TOP FAVORITE bands!!❤🤗😊❤💥
My millionth & one time listening to Renegade😋
I gotta say young man that I love your energy on this reaction. I grew up listening to this stuff and it’s amazing to see younger folk appreciate it as much as I did as a kid.
When it started I was like....'wait til he gets to the guitar solo'!! You didn't disappoint, Silas 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Blue Collar Man
Suite Madam Blue
Crystal Ball
Grand Illusion
THE LIST IS TOO LONG, SILAS!!
Just leave out Mr. Roboto - that was the end of Styx🤮
@@lynnschnekenburger7270 The polarizing Mr. Roboto gets blamed because it was a smash hit. Music Time was really the end.
SO awesome to see young people enjoying this music! I've always loved Styx.
Yes “Grand Illusion “has all Bangers
Young man, you just had the same reaction everybody's had hearing this for the first time for forty years. Fun, isn't it?
Great reaction
From The Grand Illusion---Man In The Wilderness will not disappoint....WE PROMISE!!!!!
This band is awesome! One of my favorites live in concert.
The Styx are one of my TOP FAVORITE bands!!❤🤗😊❤💥
Do their Grand Illusion album !!!
For SURE. Grand Illusion was my first Styx album and I must have played it a hundred times! Give it a try...
Or “Pieces of Eight”
Masterpiece album!!!
Styx has so many hits.. Just great songs and a really fun band to see live
Keep going down the Styx rabbit hole… you’ll be surprised how deep it goes.
It was a blast to watch someone who wasn't expecting that abrupt transition after the intro.
GREAT REACTION! Big one on my playlist. I'm 75 and react jus' as You did still today. Love this song. The drum riff near the end sounds like his feed draggin' as they go up the gallows steps.
Styx has a ton of good songs! Try Come Sail Away, Lorelei, Lights, Love In The Midnight, Miss America, Mr Roboto, so many more!
Good choice. One of the greatest rock songs ever. Imagine seeing this live. I saw them. Live. Check out "Blue Collar Man." Awesome.
My first album I paid for with my own money as a kid ! Good stuff.
Love seeing you react to all the great music 🎶
I always say that back in the day we were so used to incredible music on the radio & later MTV, just constantly. We were spoiled & just took it for granted the great music would always be there. Sad that it's not anymore.
Paradise theatre tells a nice story
Come Sail Away❤❤❤❤
Yessssss 🎊🎉 play it and enjoy it. Styx always brings it.
Saw 'em in concert just last year! Still bangin'!
Silas--you were likely too young to remember, but I worked at the university auditorium for years. Got to hear this band and I was very impressed. I was shocked at how many songs I knew and loved….but hadn’t known were them growing up.
Anyway…..I’m a fan!
Absolutely classy band!
Their biggest song is actually the ballad Babe from 1980-other hits-come Sail Away, Lady, blue collar man-but their album cuts are also great-crystal Ball, miss america etc.
19 studio albums, and the best continuous creation of magical music over time of any progressive rock band, in my opinion. Many multi platinum albums. Still touring, and still sounding amazing.
Several very good songs by Styx and worth a listen. "Too Much Time on My Hands", "Blue Collar Man", "The Best of Times", "Come Sail Away", "Babe", "Sing for the Day", "Lady", "Fooling Yourself", "The Grand Illusion", "I'm OK". Pick one and run with it!
Suite Madam Blue. Lots of other great songs from Styx. Keep going.
One of the best songs of the 70's
You’re a great reactor! I was 14 in 1979 when I saw Styx at my first concert. Even though it’s rocking music, there’s a haunting tone & with the lyrics, I can just see the man who’s about to be hanged. 😱 💀 Like that you have appreciation for a lot of different music!🎶
Styx was my first rock concert.
One of Styx's strengths is their variety and musical depth. They have 3 guys that can sing lead vocals, and 2 guys who can play lead guitar. The third vocalist plays keyboards, and then the Panozzo brothers are the rhythm section (drums and bass). They have some great ballads ("Lady" would be my first choice). Hit some of Grand Illusion next - great album, though this album is nearly tied for their best.
Blue Collar Man (Long Nights), Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man), Babe, Come Sail Away, Too Much Time On My Hands, Lights, Grand Illusion, Lady, and many many more hits!
Great reaction! Someone else mentioned that you need to see Jeff Healey “See the light.” (Night music 1988) I never heard it so I watched it… All I’m going to say is you HAVE to react to it! I was left totally stunned… 😳you will destroy your chair!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"Crystal Ball" is my favorite Album by them but they have a lot of good music out there so you cant go wrong on any of the suggestions.
Album: "Grand Illusion," songs: "Crystal Ball" and "Suite Madame Blue" please.
I was nuts for this band as a teenager. ❤
Pieces of Eight is a masterpiece. _DO IT!!!_
The peak of their powers!
I always think of Styx and Queen as parallel bands. Huge and right on the same timeline.
You may like Midnight Ride or Suite Madam Blue as well as many others.
This guy is just so much fun to watch!
This band has like 20 great songs. Worth checking their tops , except maybe the shmaltzy Babe, which was a number one, if I remember.
I couldn't wait to see your face when it switched up lol awesome reaction!!! 🤍 Saw them in concert and they were awesome!!
You'll get a similar vibe from Blue Collar Man, also a Tommy Shaw cut. On the other end of the spectrum are beautiful songs like Boat on the River.
I made my own Styx T-shirt circa ‘82🤘
"Prelude 12/ Stuite Madame Blue" you won't regret it Silas!
"Miss America" rocks even harder than this one. "Pieces Of Eight" is their biggest album. "Grand Illusion" is their best. You could do every track off that one.
Grand illusion hell yeah
You're having the same reaction we did when this came out. So cool.
Just doing the countdown to the yell and seeing your reaction, so epic! 3 ...2...1... Silas- "Yo, What!!!!!"
"Grand Illusion" is one of those albums that's meant to be listened to start to finish. It's kind of a concept album. Each song is amazing. Personally I don't think they did anything better after that.
That's true, but "Renegade" is from their "Pieces of Eight" album (1978).
Suite Madam Blue! and Come Sail Away! 👍 Oh yeah don't forget Lady!
All of their albums are great!
Suite Madam Blue from Equinox is one of their best
Styx was a tremendous group with a very high quality sound ---- try any of the following on for size, I'm sure you'll like them: _Grand Illusion, Queen of Spades, Man in the Wilderness_ and _Come Sail Away (long album version)_ just to name a few, there are many other great ones.
Great album!
😎👍
For MY money, Equinox, Grand Illusion, and Pieces of Eight were Styx' apex achievements - hard to go wrong with any of those albums. Outside of that they get a little more hit or miss but they're ALWAYS very listenable. Standout tracks include Come Sail Away and the title track (Grand Illusion), Suite Madame Blue (Equinox), Blue Collar Man and Queen of Spades (Pieces of Eight), and A.D.1928/Rockin' the Paradise (Paradise Theater).
Grand Illusion is a great album too
Yeah, either Pieces of Eight or Grand Illusion would be a good full album reaction to do. My personal favorite Styx is 2017's " the mission". Unbelievable that a band does their masterpiece 50 years after forming.
The Grand Illusion & Pieces Of Eight are 2 albums you should review & react to both full albums.
Best album - The Grand Illusion... Best song - hard to pick but I'll go with Man in the Wilderness. 😎
absolutely Man In The Wilderness and Castle Walls--good choice!!1
Suite Madam Blue from Equinox is a masterpiece. The Grand Illusion is their greatest album.
I recommend "Snowblind".
Just found your channel. Great genuine reactions. You seem like a happy young man! 👍🏻
"Pieces Of Eight" and "The Grand Illusion" are both great full albums to check out. You'll like them both. I think you'd like TGI a little better.but they're both awesome.
Yes this was a great band during my high school years. Class of 1980. You really need to check out GRAND ILLUSION.
I must say, that you are so adorable and I absolutely love your reactions ❤️ Keep it up buddy ✌️
Oh yeah some tommy Shaw shredding the guitar! Great reaction and band! “Come sail away” is their biggest hit I think!
Tommy's "Too Much Time on My Hands" might've been bigger. "Lady", "Mr. Roboto" and "The Best of Times" for sure.
My favorite from Styx!
You may get a lot of mentions for, "Come Sail Away", which is a great track, but my suggestion is go back further to, "Crystal Ball".
My favorite Styx songs are Mr. Robato and Don't Let It End.
*Grand Illusion* (please)
Come Sailaway there first hit its a classic
Great reaction 😂 I bet you’re fun at a concert!!
Wow! This takes me back! You ok Silas?! lol.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
You have to listen to the song sweet Madam Blue
You want a rockin song , try Nightwish, Romanticide official live at Wacken 2013 , 82000 people 🤘🏼💥🤘🏼
The running gag on That's 70's show making fun of Stix while secretly owning and liking their music,,,,, Peace/JT
My youngest son is still mad that I went and saw Styx without him before he was born. Yeah.... 😂
Go Steelers
I like Mr. Roboto and Come Sail Away.
Check out the entire ''Equinox'' album. Killer cool...
We had the most amazing music in the 70s. Unlike today where most bands all try to sound the same, back then originality and artistry were the rule rather than the exception. They also reportedly introduced the rock power ballad with the following song.
The sound is a bit tinny, it’s from ‘78.

Nice Choice - This one and The Grand Illusion are on my side-to-side list of LP's from back-in-the-day! I also LOVE parts of Cornerstone & Paradise Theatre. Not too much on Kilroy.
