I got my first speeding ticket as a teenager blasting this as I flew down the street. No regrets.
It was good to be around in the 70's and 80's if just for the music. Welcome to it. ;)
I love it when we know what's coming and you get blown away.
Really, the span from 1975-1981 was such a productive era for Styx. They dropped 6 great albums in six years: Equinox, Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone and Paradise Theater. Their classic rock catalog can stack up against anyone.
You read my mind!!!!!
I was going to say a great 4 album run from Equinox to Pieces of eight. I think the wheels starting coming off with Cornerstone, and then the engine and transmission blew with Kilroy.
@@nealm6764 There were some good moments on Cornerstone and Paradise Theater. Especially "Snowblind." I agree that Kilroy was junk.
@@jeffcobb2734 "Moments", while the previous albums were song after song of brilliance.
@@nealm6764 I'm not disagreeing with you in principle, but I liked a lot of Cornerstone. Songs like Lights, Why Me, Babe, Boat on a River, Never Say Never, Borrowed Time are good styx songs. Paradise Theater was their last decent album. Rockin' the Paradise, Best of Times, Snowblind, Too much time on my hands are worthwile.
Ladies and Gentlemen.... Mr Tommy Shaw.. .guy is such a musician
Always great when the Reactor is literally giggling with delight throughout the song.
Styx was one of my favorite bands back in the day. They hold up well after so many years
My favorite by Styx is "Too Much Time on My Hands" I hope you get to that one really soon! great reaction to this one!
These guys are still touring summer 2024!!!
Always deliver a great show!
Without Dennis.
We all replayed the intro too we just had to keep lifting the needle, lol.
This is why I love watching reaction videos, it is the next best thing to hearing something for the first time again. It's difficult to have a favorite when it comes to Styx, but this one is a little different than the others. Transition shock, right from the beginning.
Styx is one of the few bands, that when you hear them, you say "that's Styx".
Imagine replaying parts of the song on vinyl by lifting the tone arm and replaying. That is how we did it in the 60's and 70's!
And then when your hand trembled or slipped and it made that horrifying SSSKKKEEEERRRAAATTCCHHH!!!" sound? LOL, oh, man, and your friends were like wincing and going "Dude! Easy, man!"
I did exactly that when recording Toto's Hydra album. I left it in as the last track and titled it "what the...".
@@joescott8877 🤣
It was totally fun being in High School during that era, with so many amazing bands, and so many amazing songs. There was no such a thing as mainstream garbage back then till MTV and VH1 came to light it was downhill from that point on. Before any of that, we had Don Kirshner's rock concert show which was freaking awesome
And Midnight Special. The only way I got to see a lot of bands sing live since I lived in a small town.
I agree! So many great bands. One of my favorites from that time was Kansas.
The Midnight Special, Absolutely
@@judasgoatbarbecue4336 Carry On Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind. Two of my favorites.
And don't forget the King Biscuit Flower Hour ! A radio show that aired on Friday nights, and played all the current rock bands and concerts.
Dam I was so thrilled watching your reaction, it was priceless. That drum roll during the final chorus you even picked out. Awesome reaction dude!
Love watching you really feel the music of my youth and be moved by it as we were. Styx was my first concert, the Paradise Theatre tour. I was 16 or 17. To this day when Renegade comes on the radio, the volume goes UP!
Keep rocking!
I'm 65 years old and lived through all this great music. Watching you react to these bands and songs I grew up with makes me so happy! If you like Tommy Shaw, consider listening to another group he was with, Damn Yankees.
He was amazing in Damn Yankees. Totally different from Styx. I am your age and I am seeing them in May. Few changes in band member due to illness and death. JY and Tommy still play. The man who replaced John on the drums is by drummer magazine voted number one drummer in the world. Fantastic. Chuck doesn't play whole concerts because of serious illness but he is brought out to do a few songs.
I believe he wrote “Boat on the River”, one of my fav Styx songs (less appreciated).
This is my favourite Styx song. It rocks! Yes, today's music is one dimensional compared to the music of my youth.
Cheers
Watching the reaction of someone listening to Styx for the first time! Very cool!
Another Illinois band that I love and grew up with. Love them❤
Blue Collar Man by Styx
Real rock, with lyrics, kick-ass guitars, and a driving beat! Takes straight back to my college days and Kasey Kasem's Top 40 on Sunday afternoons.
Funny you say Kasey kasem...they are doing replays of his Count downs. ty
@@tsonofjohnson489 really? Dang! At least it'll be good music! I'm really showing my age, but I miss him doing Shaggy on Scooby-Doo cartoons!
Where are they doing replays of Kasey Kasem. I would love to show my granddaughter. She's into all things 70s.
@@valogden American top 40 can be heard on 106.7 Fm here Lake Oswego, Oregon. (I Heart Radio) on Sundays! I hope you and granddaugher Enjoy! Kasem - 8-18-1984 Today.
@@brendasorenson6186 Keep sharing those good times!
This has been so much fun watching someone discover Styx for the first time. Thank you!
Great reaction!❤❤❤❤
Some other Styx songs to listen to:
"Fooling Yourself"
"Too Much Time On My Hands"
"Blue Collar Man"
"Come Sail Away"
"Lady" - 1973 album version (their first breakout hit)
Love Blue Collar Man
& Snowbound.
@@mark-be9mq Snowblind.
@Jodi J I stand corrected. Thank you.
Man in the wilderness. One of a handful of songs I wish I had written!
Recommend Blue Collar Man…although not a bad Styx song in their catalog. Glad you are enjoying Styx, they are iconic.
As much as I hate Mr. Roboto, it isn't a bad song... too many people love it for it to be a bad song.
@@paulschirf9259 I appreciated it so much more after I saw them perform it as kind of a Broadway show (Kilroy Was Here). It was amazing! They created a whole show with extravagant sets for each song. It’s probably on You-Tube somewhere. I saw it back in ‘83 in Berkeley.
I remember sitting in the car with my dad and step family heading to Six Flags for the day when this song came on the radio. All of us kids immediately started singing along, pounding on the back of the seats with that opening beat, and then screaming, “Daaaaaamn!” and then just rocking out with the rest of the song. Top 40 radio in the ‘70s was terrific!
I don't think I've EVER seen anyone enjoy this song sooooo much. Thank you for sharing. Amazing.
I was fortunate enough to grow up listening to this music. Great music knows no shelf life. It’s still fantastic 40+ years later.
I can see myself with my sister dancing in front of our huge living room stereo (the size of a piece of furniture) we all had in those days with this song blasting.
This song rocks just as hard live today. Everyone knows what’s coming and we love it.
Lol. You basitds! I was 12 when this came out. We didn't get to pause it and say WTF? when all Hell broke loose from that cool intro. We had to quickly keep up. Love seeing you experience this in your own way!
It's so nice seeing new Styx lovers coming to our camp being impressed and so appreciative
That's exactly how I listened to Renegade when it came out in '79. My friend had the Pieces of Eight tape and I made her blast it repeatedly from her cool Z-28. The good old days when rock stars were talented musicians who could write songs, play instruments, and sing!!! #Styx#Tommy Shaw#Renegade#GreatSong#RealMusic
#SuperbTalent
That intro is so fun❤ I couldn't wait for you to hear it😂 . I didn't think your eyes could open that wide. I got this album for Christmas when I was a baby (13 yrs old)😂. This is one of my favorites on this album. ❤
This one, Lady, and Come Sail Away are ones I play on repeat!
What, No Blue Collar man? Sacrilege! LOL.
@@boki1693 Ooooo…..I forgot! Added!
It was tough growing up back in the day because while you wanted the radio at full blast you also wanted to be able to turn it up when something like this came on
Go see Styx live and when Tommy starts this song the roar of the crowed is deafning
Loving this Styx - Renegade. So much going on in this song and it is awesome to see your reactions throughout.
Glad you are digging one of my favorite bands, watching this was like watching a kid get the Christmas present they wanted . Pure joy
Great reaction, this was fun! As so many others have said, the sign of a great reactor is making us feel like we're hearing the song for the first time.
I absolutely love your reaction to this friggin amazing song! My favorite on this album! I really hope you will enjoy finding all their phenomenal songs as you venture into Styx land 💜
He still sings this perfectly!
I just saw them a couple of months ago in Salt Lake City, with Loverboy and REO Speedwagon.
Me too! Had the best seats!
This guys reaction is priceless! We already know whats coming, so its great to see his reaction!! Terrific channel !
Millionth & ONE and still a great listen!!!!!
I actually can not imagine my life without Styx being a part of it. When I hear or listen, it takes me to many moments throughout my life. Having the cassette tape & my Walk man w/headphones to get through a hard works day to a fun get together on sterio!!
Priceless shock😅
Come sail away by Styx is a masterpiece. You gotta do it next!
I love to watch young people discovering the music we were raised on and loved, but took for granted! We had no idea the 70’s era had the BEST MUSIC OF ALL TIME 😆💜 If you want to hear another epic jam, Pink Floyd Live Echoes in Pompeii, the LIVE VERSION VIDEO, I really think you would LOVE it! It was the album before Dark Side of the Moon, which I saw performed live in Tampa Stadium 🥰💜 I didn’t even know it existed until about a year ago 😳
Welcome to the music of my youth ! My personal favorite from Styx is “ Miss America “
Your face melted. Seriously, jaw dropped face melted.
I've been a fan since I was a young teen, I'm now 58 see them every summer.
They're not the same without Dennis.
You're right, they're way better
Now you see why Styx is one of my all time favorites. The critics are nuts not to like this band.
Blue Collar Man is another Styx BANGER!!!
My favorite Styx song.
Thank you for your incredible reviews!!!! 😁
I saw them when this song came out! This song was so cool live! They had a big movie screen with an animation of the renegade trying to out ride the law on horseback !
They play this at home games of the Pittsburgh Steelers to fire up the crowd and they(we) go crazy !!
This is the song that they pull out when we need a big play, and it seems to be a little magical. Need a sack? Renegade. Need a turnover? Renegade. Need Troy Polamalu to leave his body, speak to Jesus, and astral project his spirit into a player on the field? Renegade.
Renegade blasting thru the sound system at former Heinz Field with over 60,000 Terrible Towels waving, it doesn't get any better than that.
LADY is my favorite song from Styx. It was the very first song of theirs I ever heard and I was hooked!
Loved your reaction it was the same for us back in the day when it was released. Thank you
This song brings back so many memories of highschool and still team. Styx was a band I listened to as often I did Queen. Loved both bands. When they were here a couple of weeks ago and I went with my sons and grandson we had so much fun. I have the cutest videos of my 3 yr old grandson dancing and trying to sing along. More great memories of Styx now!
I'm so glad I was able to see Styx in the 70s, 80's AND 90's! Dennis still gives me goosebumps with his pristine voice. What a gift.
When I was 20 I'd always go to live band venues and they would always cover this song so I'd be dancing to it!!!!
Styx was the first concert I went to. Unfortunately I was too young to appreciate them. This was in the mid/late 70's.
It's like going on a carnival ride, and back when it came out, they did play it on county fair rides. A great memory for me, I still have the 45 kickin around.
We had really good music back in day, I was in high school when this came out.
I think I took all this great music for granted growing up because I expected that bands would use every drop of their talent, heart and soul into each song and album to make it as good as they possibly could! Massive talent from many bands like Styx was just how I thought it was done and probably always would be! Foreigner is amazing too if you haven’t checked them out! Boston and Queen which I think you have. Scorpions and so many more for you to discover! Enjoy!
Kansas and ELO. too.
That’s exactly what to do with that song. Start it over and over again.
You need to check out "Miss America" which features the third singer in the band, James Young.
You seem surprised that these 70s bands could not only play their instruments but SING TOO. Never hold the same beat or tune for the whole damn song. Albums great from start to finish. I feel bad for you first timers, but envy that you can hear them for the first time. If only you could hear them for the first time AGAIN.
I used to love this song. They used to play at the roller skating rink back in 79. Two of my four brothers and sisters had the album. I remember I was in 7th grade and I sold magazines for my junior high. The top seller would earn a pair of tickets to a Styx concert. I was not top seller, but I received a giant Sugar Daddy Slowpoke sucker and a hot air popcorn popper.
Oh my goodness. There's so much to listen to. I'm sure people have already suggested Come Sail Away. Absolutely essential. Also, for a slightly different listen, I highly recommend Boat On A River. I've always loved it's sound.
And before he was a wanted man Renegade he was a blue collar man and blue collar man is another fantastic song which was so popular by STYX
I saw them in concert where they opened up for AC/DC. Just imagine that Energy!!
Tommy's one of my top 10 voice n one of my favorite bands back in the day
Millionth & ONE and still a great listen!!!!!
I grew up in 70’s. I always saw this as a copy of the idea behind Bohemian Rhapsody. Similar story.
Two bands that were deep in talent with musicians, writers and showmanship. We were lucky to experience both.
They're completely different songs. One is about a man who knows he's going to die. The other is about a man who got caught by the law.
@@jodij6280 yah but you can see where Styx got the idea. It’s all over that song…
This brings me back to listening to this while playing pinball at the local kids hang out. It was the best time for music.
The intro is actually the first verse and the initial explosion is the chorus.
I love the albums Equinox and The Grand Illusion
Oh those gosh-darn Chicago South-Siders that got together and formed this band.............
I took all this music for granted as a kid. Who makes music like this anymore? Epic tune!
I saw you talking recently about liking folk music. Give a listen to the Styx song "Boat on the River" from the Cornerstone album. I don't think it charted at all in the US, but it was a huge hit for them globally, and it really is a beautiful folk song, believe it or not.
If you want a SPECIAL treat, look up their song, “Fooling Yourself/Angry young man” performed with the Tommy Shaw youth orchestra-you’ll LOVE it!
Love this! ❤
"You want more? We got more!" You get more in concert - check out a live version.
You're now deep in the heart of the Styx catalog (my next suggestions are in the comments of your reaction of "Suite: Madame Blue").
"Fooling Yourself" was the song that got me into Styx back in 1977. Enjoy your exploration - there's many more.
Deep cuts from "The Grand Illusion" album are fan favorites "Man In The WIlderness" and "Castle Walls".
After I got the "Pieces Of Eight" album(with "Queen Of Spades" and "Blue Collar Man"), I explored their earlier stuff - a whole new world of music.
This group is still touring and they still have most of the original band members. Go see them. They are still killing it.
I lost interest when they fired Dennis.
A lot of people are recommending "Come Sail Away". Thought I should warn you that there are a lot of "Radio Edit" versions floating around CZcams. Back in the 1970's and 80's, many radio stations played shorter versions of longer songs so that they could squeeze "more music" in per hour where really all they were doing was playing more songs, but the shorter versions of each. Record companies also released those short versions as singles. The full version, found on the album, clocks in at 6:10 and has a long first verse and an instrumental part before the second verse. The single version cuts out the second part of the first verse and the instrumental part.
6th grade. Me at 56 and still this is my favorite rock song.
there was this calm intro and then something exploded.
Favorite Styx song. A hard hitter.
I like hearing songs I love and not realize who sings it until something like this happens.
Eets gooooodddd
Just saw them. They were still great but they left out this one. Now I'm mad. Lol. Great reaction. Love this song. Never gets old to me.
I did too. It was the first concert for my 3 yr old grandson. He loved it!
Gonna see them next month
My favorite of theirs ❤
A lot of good hard rock and songs on this album pieces of eight renegade is just one of many. songs that nobody ever heard about, Great White Hope even Lord of the rings. Renegade biggest hits on the billboards for STYX on this album.Knock off socks in the beginning with the heart beating pump that starts blasting you into a iconic riff. What an opener right? This album and the Grand illusion put them in the next level.
I was in my senior year when this came out. Needless to say I was rocking my ass off.
You have discovered one of the great vocalists. And not a bad friggin song, of course. I recommend "Blue Collar Man" on this album. It competes for my fav--along with the one you are listening to here.
I was 11 years old when I "borrowed" this 45 from my older brother's friend Mark. It was the hardest-rocking record I owned at the time (until I found Love Gun by Kiss). I still have that 45. I owe you one Mark.
What age does one need to be to remember 45s
@@davidbordonaro1631 Well, I remember when I got my first CD player in '88 it was possible to find CD singles. They didn't last long, and CD's took over from vinyl. So I'd say the popularity of vinyl 45's probably died off in 1990. So you'd need to be probably 40 or older to remember them. Bigger question, when Sheryl Crowe sings "got my 45 on, so I can rock on" is she talking about a record, sunscreen, or her Smith & Wesson???
Tommy Shaw is a beast, all 5’6” (or whatever he is.) Both vocally and guitar.
♥️ Miss america ♥️
