  • A rant from Mike Gilbert on downsizing your terminal tackle on large swimbaits to increase the amount and size of bites. What are you doing to make your baits stand out from the rest?

    Thank you for taking the time and sharing your ideas, I appreciate the hell out of that. This being my first summer using “big baits” since I’ve been throwing a glide bait I’ve pulled some (big relative to the fisheries I have) fish out of the depths but have only convinced a smaller fish to bite. I’m going to give this a try, I’ve gotten follows but they follow more than long enough to realize something isn’t right and turns them off.

  • @rodfather_bass_fishing

    Great info... it's a philosophy I completely subscribe to in all my fishing. I have found in my lakes, which have very stained water, that lighter line is less visible, lets baits like cranks and spinnerbaits give off a better rattle or vibration, and ultimately... they get bit more. Great message Mike.

    I love this idea, I swapped out to smaller hooks on my Deps 175, helped it suspend longer - also went to a loop knot instead of a snap; I am going to eliminate the split rings, tie the hooks direct with line; I saw this on the Roman Made site where Takamura used cord to attach the hooks with. Seems like he uses pretty small hooks on the Mother as well. Not sure if it'll work but going to try it tonight.

    Nice video. I like to sometimes paint my plastics hardware to take the chrome off it. I’ve been running black nickle blades even on my spinnerbaits as I know our local area is highly pressured. I also like to paint my plastics in general and if I’m not getting the quality or quantity of bite on my bite i like to even lower the LBS (poundage) of my leader to reduce visibility. Sometimes even using dull colours that doesn’t catch the fisherman’s eye instead with some mixed retrieves will produce. Here in Australia we think the biggest lures are best. Not always the case if you go back to simple basics like matching the hatch.

    How is your hook up ratio on that modded Hudd? I like the idea of that but concerned about the Hooke up ratio since that hook has to pierce up through the plastic and then into the fishes mouth. does it have a pocket around the hook to help aid the plastic collapsing when it's bit for a good hookset like the standard weedless hudds have?

    I'm a new subscriber and fairly new to throwing big baits I totally support what you're saying I think that's the only way to go not only match the hatch but give it the most natural presentation possible with that being said I have a couple questions. How do I stop breaking off on hooksets and casting the bait my drag is never locked down and I don't use I baitcaster so no backlashes I use a palomar knot. when I use with my heavier set up it practically never fails but I don't get bit NEARLY as often because of the braid... Different knot or line brand? Or just terrible luck?....

    • @WorkingClassZeroFishing
      @WorkingClassZeroFishing  Před 6 lety

      There is a lot to unpack there and without seeing each individual circumstance, it is really hard to know what could be the issue. Make sure your guides don't have any bless that could be cutting the line. If thats not a problem, try another knot. If that doesn't change anything try another line.

  • @KeepinItReelFishing
    @KeepinItReelFishing Před 6 lety +12

    Agreed Mike. I often lament that so few manufacturers don't incorporate rotating hook hangers on their large, hard bodied swimbaits. Personally, I think that should be standard. Everything to gain and nothing to lose. Also, regarding the trebles....what are you thoughts on lightly dressed ones? (With the emphasis on lightly) I feel that does double duty by masking the hook and to some degree simulating undulating fins.
    While the bulk of the waters I fish here in the Northeast are not clear like yours, still....accumulating my data over the past few years I consistently see more strikes on totally hook-hidden weedless lures. I think the breadth of Huddleston products that he makes them with being totally invisible hardware/weighting systems speaks to his belief and ideas on the matter. Which, makes me ask what another person above did....why not just run the 8" weedless model as built by Hudd? Is it due to the line tie point in front as opposed to in-line? Anyway....good info man and smart idea for a video series.

    • @WorkingClassZeroFishing
      @WorkingClassZeroFishing  Před 6 lety +6

      It's a matter of the hook having the ability to swing free once stuck. Also, in my opinion the weedless versions of the huddle don't have the same action and are far less stable. I prefer modifying the tried and true version as I think there is something to the placement of the line tie and how it causes the bait to move through the water.

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing Před 6 lety

      Gotcha.....good point/idea on that free swinging hook. Very much akin to the Imakatsu Stealth Swimmer...smart advancements. And to the second point YES. I love the weedless 8", but your right....it just doesn't move like the standard model.
