  • The Porsche 911 964 seems to command more money than almost any other classic Porsches. But how does it compare to other air cooled 911’s and is it truly the best classic Porsche to buy? Find out.
    I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to own a 1986 Carrera coupe, a 1992 Porsche 911 964 and a 1995 Porsche 911 993….
    And in this video I’ll give you a run-down on the 964 itself from both a design perspective and a driving impression perspective along with some comparisons to the 3.2 911 Carrera and the 993.
    All 3 of these classic 911’s are absolutely amazing in their own way, and in this video I’ll reveal which one I think is the best.

    By far the best profile, shape and looks of any Porsche ever. But what else would a 964 owner say.

    I own a 1991 964 C4 since 2011. 189.000 miles. No engine or gearbox rebuilt. Do not cut corners on maintenance,
    warm up engine and gearbox gently and it will run forever. No, it is not a cheap car to own, but it is a dream to drive,
    and the 250 hp is more than enough. Between 100 km/h and 220 km/h it is still impressive. You are faster than 75%
    of modern traffic and your smile is bigger than 99% of the other drivers.

    I have subscribed 👊
    I don't own (yet) a Porsche.
    I am a real BMW enthusiast 😇.
    I have my BMW E34 (also in green - Lagünengrün - color with cream leather seats).
    As I see you telling about your Queen (and loving it) , I see myself telling about mine 😎.
    My BMW is definately going to be accompanied by a 964 (911).
    Thank you for your enthusiast!
    I am so glad that I now know even more about these beauties, thanks to you! 💫

    993 arguably the better all round car but the feminised front end cancels out the more attractive rear end so for me the more raw drive character and imo better all round looks make the 964 my weapon of choice….I do like the wide rear end of the 993 S models though …
    Thanks for posting interesting and thought provoking videos😉👍🏻👊🏻

    I wouldn’t have even considered the 993 were I to answer your question, but I saw a silver one at club drive this last weekend and liked it a lot. She had disabled her rear wing as well, but I didn’t get a chance to ask her why. I have a 996 and have no problem with the wing deploying, so I’m assuming it is more to do with the air-cooled ethos? Just guessing. I owned a ‘77 S, so you would think I would choose the SC, but that 964 is beautiful and when the stance is adjusted will be a stunner.

    Great video. My first 911 was an '87 Cab that I bought when it was 2 years old. It was my daily driver for several years, really enjoyed it. In 2001 I picked up a "91 C2 in Guards Red with black leather. Pretty well optioned car and I still have it. Not a daily driver, but I still drive it. Mechanically stock with 64K miles. I enjoy the ride and power more than the G body and appreciate the lack of nannies.

  • @jonwarshawsky5288
    @jonwarshawsky5288 Před 2 lety +7

    Good video review. I have a ‘93 964 C2, second owner, bought last September. A few random thoughts:
    1. I initially thought I wanted another 993, but when I saw the 964 in slate grey I was pretty much sold. I know Porsche did a fair job of meeting bumper regulations with the G series, but it always looked like a compromise. 964 is a cleaner look.
    2. I have a black interior. I know the grey is attractive, but in my experience black carpets are a lot more practical.
    3. While later 964s are better in general, stuff breaks and parts are expensive. I just replaced the three rear lenses for ~$1500 because the tabs had cracked from being over-tightened. The climate control sensor motor was squealing so another $500 part. Super reliable car, legendary build quality, but after 30 years some bits are at the end of their service life.
    4. HVAC on the 964 is terrific - and I live in a desert area where 100 degrees is common. With R134a it blows cold. Earlier 911s are fun to drive, but the a/c is fairly weak.
    5. I agree, it’s more than fast enough for public roads. Brakes are excellent but generate a ton of dust.
    6. For anyone comparing a 964 to a 991/992… the cockpit of the 964 is night and day better. You feel really tucked in, like you’re ready to run LeMans. The big gauges are in your face, and the windscreen is right there. Unless your other car is a 917, sitting in a 964 is unparalleled. Sort of vintage, but quite daily driveable.

    Since I used to own an 87 Targa, I am partial to the G series. That being said, the 964 is a prettier car with the way the front and rear bumpers integrate better with the overall shape. Plus I like the center console and shifter better in the 964. I've driven a 964 but never owned one. I have it on my bucket list.

    That last shot of the 964 in the parking lot! Damn! So good! That Amazon POPS!! Will, great review. I think answering "which one is your favorite 911" is as loaded as an oil thread! Having owned all three of the cars you have, I ask myself this same question often. I admit I just like the "feel" of my current 964 over the G body or my previous 95' 993. However, then I get in my 09 C4S manual and the internal dialogue debate starts all over lol! Thanks for putting the content out that you do for the community. It would be impossible to choose between those three cars! If you take color combinations out of the decision process, the 911 SC would have to be my choice because there's nothing more classic other than going back to the speedsters, spiders & 1966 912 & the 1971 911t, however if no one was looking, the 993 would be better for driving, I guess the 964 is the perfect combination of old & new. The comments you've made about the different feels of the suspension between your 964 and your 993 may not have as much to do with the brand and model of the struts, but rather with the fundamentally different designs, with the 964 being a McPherson type, whereas the 993 is multi-link. These are major differences in suspension architecture. In fact, it makes the case for a C4 being a great option for a 964 exactly because of that, with a C2 being more engaging and capable in a 993.

    I agree with you on mod vs stock. I think the car’s condition will dictate the mod or no mod direction it should go and the mods you have done can certainly go back to stock rather easily. Thanks for your comparitive analysis of these three cars, of which index these time periods Porsche evolved. Your discussion further confirms to me the pinnacle of the air cooled 911: The 964.. of which I believe is the very last iconic and most beautiful and functional 911's ever made. The 964 kept the iconic characteristics of the earlier icons, exuding those beautiful lines further into the sexiest car imaginable without losing what we all think of when we think Porsche.. Like a used bar of soap, these lines came together, climaxing those iconic traits, encapsulating a moment of time in history that is priceless. It's no wonder the 964 is sought after by the likes of George Clooney and many others of whom know that price is not a consideraton.. "Must Have" ! Wished I'd known this years ago and could have afforded one at the time.. Denys 🤑

    If you take an opinion from a non-Porsche person and you'd present all three in same color, 95% will say that the 993 is the best looking. But Porsche people love the 964 front because it still has those classic headlight "towers" or whatever you call them. I agree. Sure 993 has them too but they're not so evident. But I don't like the "narrow" and long rear of the 964. Perfection would be 964 front and the fat ass of the 993.

    All great cars, for standard wheels the Cup 1s on the 964 were a high water mark. IMHO the classic lines on the front of the 964 look great, but looses out in a big way in the rear. the carrera sized flares are long in the tooth and make the car look slab sided when paired w the chunky bumper covers. Almost 911 2.7. No contest with the rear view on the 993. Those hips….
    Now a 964 turbo 3.3 or 3.6 is a whole other conversation

    Hey Will. What’s the little round yellow sticker on the 964 passenger door pull handle?

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  Před 2 lety

      No idea. It’s painted on, and has been there since I got it. Yours doesn’t have it I’m guessing?

    • @wescampbell9105
      @wescampbell9105 Před rokem

      All of my air cooled Porsches have the dot on the door handle. Mine all have black interior. I literally think it is so you can see and know where the door handle is located. Without the dot, the door handle just blends in.

      @Rennthusiast  Před 2 lety

      No, but I am experiencing low charge after the car sits for a day or more. New battery hasn’t solved the issue so now I’m thinking it’s the alternator.

      Yes, thanks. I should have elaborated. The factory correct color match for mine is NLA. Have thought about black or potentially having mine painted with a paint that adheres correctly to plastic.

    964 design is iconic. I believe your stance is a bit off. The rear .05" to low there's no wheel gap vs the front. It make it look like it's sagging in the rear. Perhaps weight alignment would help aswell. Good b-roll btw.

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks. I need to dial in the suspension a bit more and you’re spot on. The rear needs to come up slightly. You should have seen it before. It was even lower. PO had it set “as low as possible” as stated on the paperwork that came with the car. Handled poorly. Back end felt like it wanted to swing out.
      Thanks for watching, as always.

    I really don’t get why there is the controversy about a rear wiper on a 911..I’ve got a 992 & specced the rear wiper…I guess as I’m in 🇬🇧 uk it’s a must as it’s always bloody raining 😂..yeah love the 964 but prices are crazy here. There is a dealer advertising for them in uk saying they will give £60k minimum any condition..

    • @Rennthusiast

    You have 3 great looking aircooled Porsches! My favorites are the very light early 911s but among the 3 it’s the ‘86 3,2. It has a more visceral feel, no driving nannies, basic torsion bar suspension & more than enough hp if tuned properly.

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  Před 2 lety +1

      Oh, ok. Never heard it called a transaxle. I am familiar with the transaxle cars (924, 968, etc).

    The 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has won none. Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest bang for the buck in Porsche's line up.
