Prince Rama Varma - Voices - Mimicry - Form and Content

  • After my previous upload of Varma ji doing three different voices, Varma ji has been flooded with requests to show his face and give a demonstration of the same. Ever game for some good fun, Varma ji came up with this precious and insightful video.
But rather than just do the same thing that he did in the previous video, he pays a heartfelt tribute to one of the greatest Parody Songsters from Kerala, Sri V.D.Rajappan, who passed away a few years ago! I really wish someone would compile all of Varma ji's reminiscences, most of which are so heart warming or inspirational!
The delivery of "Barber Ramla Kesa Thailam" had me in splits! Just pure comedy gold!
And Aliveni! It just melts my heart each and every time, even when illustrated like this, halfway through an informal chat.
The video concludes with another super insightful illustration about form and content, which would be immeasurably valuable for the discerning music student as well as music lover.

Brilliant, Sir! Verily, these are little nuggets of wisdom, worth their weight in gold.
From my own experience I'd only add that while a passive listener can still afford to be swayed by merely the form, any proper sangīta sādhaka, or even a serious, active listener should always dive deep endeavouring to appreciate the content, like a deep-sea diver gathering pearls of wisdom, brilliance and excellence. This endless pursuit is the only way to continuous self-improvement.
    Hare Krishna! Pranaam.

Varma ji has always been notoriously publicity shy and doesn't even have an account on facebook, instagram, twitter and so on. But during these past few months of lockdown, he has been extremely kind and gracious to have shared so many heart warming and personal glimpses like this too, with me. All I ask from people like you, who can appreciate the whole package that Varma ji offers, would be to spread these videos as widely as you can, among your like minded friends.

The past few days have been just unbelievable, thanks you you, Varma ji! Watching this video leaves me at a loss for words! My entire family are big fans of both Cochin Kalabhavan and V.D.Rajappan. Though we never spoke much about him unlike some of the more high profile actors. Your short video made me rediscover the brilliance of the man and his sad end. I never knew that he was classically trained, until now! I always held you in the highest esteem as an artist, but for sure, I hold you in even higher esteem as a human being. In a world where so many people are so calculating and where the majority of celebrities seem to do or say every single thing with some ulterior motive like gathering votes, it is so refreshing to have a startlingly normal person like you, who is always the same, be it on stage or at home in lockdown. You seem to have discovered the profound truth that we are all here only for some time and to conduct your life accordingly, with a rare sort of lightness of being that is really hard to come by. God bless you Varma ji, for all that you are and all that you do.

Whether it is in public or in private, whether it is while dealing with his gurus, disciples, accompanists or taxi drivers and waiters at restaurants. I feel extremely grateful that because of this lockdown, Varma ji was kind enough to make at least a few personal videos like this too, rather than just share some of his concert videos. Since only Varma ji and I know just how much efffort I had to take in the beginning, to get Varma ji to share his videos with me, I feel extremely happy when I see comments like yours, that it was completely worth the effort that I put in.
