  • Hunters have many exotics at their disposal when it comes to their subclass. While none of them really push Hunters into the heavens, their wide selection and consistency means that almost any selection is viable.

    The key component you are missing in higher level content is having solar arms with impact induction. That makes it so that the knives just need to hit, not kill, in order to get your grenade back

    • @Giimmiiee
      @Giimmiiee Před 2 lety +53

      In my case, hitting (not killing) with fan of knives already fully recharges the tripmine. So what you end up actually needing is a fast gambler's dodge. That is why void gauntlet with bolstering detonation and focusing strike is good with YAS

      I like to use stasis for grenade kickstart and a solar well build using ordinance, bountiful, and grenade mods. Right now I'm going back and forth with solar weapon boost and healing. In PVP I just double up on grenade kickstart.

    as a seasoned hunter main this is the conclusion I also came to. base kit is really solid and fun but there is no crazy build to take things to the next level. Ive been primarily working with assassins cowel, healing nades, and gpg with the fragment that extends radiant and restoration for high end content. i use solar wells for font of might and healing combined with a golden tricorn solar weapon. it all works really well together as a well oiled machine for survivability and slaying out with a solar weapon.

    The new hunter dodge also procs Ahamkaras when the AOE touches enemies. Ignitions also count. Golden Gun shots also count.
    For max fun you can throw a trip, throw a knife, throw a trip, throw gpg, throw a trip, dodge, throw a trip, pop 6 shot golden, throw trips and gpg's between shots.
    I have no clue what the max dps of this combo is but honest to god its so fun to pull off.

    • @Amirifiz
      @Amirifiz Před 2 lety

      With enough stacks of that solar grenade mod that gives energy on grenade use, you can throw a tripmine at a boss and it will fully restore the energy.
      So you can throw like 4 or 5 mines before you have to throw a knife, and reset the loop. If you get GPG then that's extra damage in addition to GPG glitching out and giving you a second one.

  • @Timeforspas12
    @Timeforspas12 Před 2 lety +20

    Finally someone of "importance" said what every hunter main has been saying for years. Hunters exotics lack the "hmmph" Warlocks and Titans have. They're niche to a point where options for solar 3.0 are so scarce that you end up thinking "damage boosting exotics" all the time.
    No wonder people keep complaining about Nighthawk and Star eater scales being top exotics. All they do is increase super damage. Because everything else is too specific and doesn't contribute to anything in the endgame.

    • @yol_n
      @yol_n Před rokem +1

    Athrys's Embrace has been my go to since it was released in BL. So much so I literally changed my bungie name to include it, its that fun and that powerful. One two punch + ignition proc with monte carlo with x5 markov chain with radiant buff. precision kills giving you your class ability back for classy restoration this season as well as healing grenade for additional survivability if needed, or heck use any grenade to proc scorch. that and you get free unstop for end game viability. super underrated, not to mention stupid good in pvp with the right amount of practice.

      @BirdMoose Před 2 lety +4

      @@wood5596 They're not gamechanging, but they are pretty good. They do massive damage with the perk up, so in high level content you can hit a burst of 3 crits, throw the knife, dodge, and do it again. That is enough to kill most champions without wasting heavy ammo.

    I’m disappointed with how far behind Nighthawk has fallen from the rest of the single target damage abilities. As a Hunter main since D1 my favorite exotics have always been the passive ones like Celestial, Bones, and Stompies. I do like Athris because I love the weighted knife but I’m looking more for the consistent fast gameplay the passives provide. It's bizarre how it sometimes won't get an ignition, or how sometimes the knife explosion WILL result in an ignition if it kills (I swear to God I'm not crazy, it has happened).
    If it was more consistent, I can see it outright replacing the need to run Gunpowder Gamble because you're getting an easy ignition without build up or cooldown, as well as 2 extra fragments.

    Assassin's cowl is my favorite exotic for solar 3.0 for general gameplay. Being able to chain invisibility over and over by getting your charged melee back by getting a kill while radiant is so nice to get out of trouble and instantly get a chunk of health. This works in NFs as well getting finishers off on champs and majors gives health instantly and 10 seconds of invisibility on top of everything else in the solar kit feels great. I use explosive well maker, bountiful wells, font of might, elemental armaments, and elemental time dilation with Classy restoration as well. Something else to add:
    For any build where you're waiting on cooldowns (such as an ignite-focused YAS/Tripmine build), throw on Bountiful Wells, and whatever stacking of Explosive Wellmaker and Elemental Armaments you find makes the most wells. (I run 2 and 2, making three wells each proc)
    This practically solves any cooldown problems, and throwing in the Radiant dodge (it scorches targets) makes it even easier, as it *also* counts as ability damage for your grenades.
    I've been rocking this with three sniper rifles for giggles all season and having a blast.

  • @VandersBrews

    I’ve been really enjoying a build where I get infinite ignitions + classy restoration anywhere. The core of it is ember is singeing, weighted knife, gamblers dodge, sky burners oath and ophidia spathe. Just scorch the enemy with skyburners hip fire (which quickly regens your dodge) then hit them with a weighted knife to cause an ignition. Scorch -> ignite -> scorch -> ignite -> dodge loops forever as long as ember of singeing isn’t being buggy. Now my personal seasonings in terms of mods are global reach, burning cells, wrath of Rasputin, melee wellmaker, well of life. A little extra regen is nice, and we deal so much explosion damage we get so many warmind cells, and they solar scorch. From the artifact I prefer classy restoration and solar fulmination. My other class options of choice are knock ‘em down, on your mark, ember of torches, solace, eruption, empyrean. These refund a throwing knife on any throwing knife kill (yes, to the body works fine) and work with the mods to extend your classy restoration indefinitely as well as giving you massive ignitions. Side benefit this season of having a scout rifle for unstoppable scout. This build has converted me from a 2% playtime on hunter to hunter main this season!

    Ophidia Spathe with Knife Trick and a One Two Punch Shotgun is pretty nice, as you can throw both sets of knife trick with a single activation of 1-2-Punch, then dodge and shoot then throw another two sets of knives if the thing you attacked still isn’t dead; if it did die you’ll get both knives back so no need to dodge. 6 knives is also enough to ignite, so you’ll also get bonus damage and it’ll clear any enemies nearby as a bonus, and the ignite kills will give your your knives back as well. It’s great for burst damage and ad clear thanks to the spread on the 3 knives.

    I made a bombardiers build a couple days before the season started in preparation for solar 3.0, hoping there'd be some new aspect or fragment that let me do something wild. While there isn't anything on the level of fusion nade/starfire for warlocks or bonk hammer for titans, it still turned out to be a good idea because there's enough things in solar 3.0 for hunter that loosely come together around scorching things and providing restoration in multiple ways. However, as your video and many other comments here pointed out, it's still not gonna be a build you can actively play around, it's just a nice "get out of danger card" to use when surrounded. The other benefit of using it this way is that you don't have to stress about getting that knife crit every time or landing a grenade on target, it's kind of a reactionary build.
    I run this with knife trick, healing grenade and torches, searing and solace for fragments. Aspects are just GPG and knock em down for more knives on blade barrage. This way, all of my abilities get a good amount of uptime from a combination of fragments, stats and other mods such as classy restoration and well of life for more healing uptime and elemental time dilation to increase the duration on well of life, explosive wellmaker for solar wells (bombardiers kills can also generate well with explosive wellmaker, pair this with a GL and I have enough wells to keep me going)
    I do switch to star-eaters during dps encounters in dungeons/raids to maximize on bb damage but in between those areas the above build works just fine. In GM content however, I don't believe this will be of much help as being surrounded in GMs is probably the worst thing to happen if you're not invis and no amount of healing would be enough to save you so that's where this falls apart. Overall, my build lets me use almost every archetype of gun i want/need to use while giving me enough things in terms of abilities to buff my overall ad clear potential/survivability

    I found using Dead Messenger on Solar damage mode helped a lot to keep scorches and GPG rolling. With a launcher ammo scavenger I never really ran out of ammo unless I was going really hard in the paint and not weaving grenade/melee enough. Feeling like I'm just chain-gunning grenades and knives in between Lost Messenger pops is hilariously fun.

    My build has pretty much been this on my hunter but using the exotic skyburners oath for the hipfire scorch. Being able to have the scorch up at all times with the gun helps to get the dodge back much faster and if you abilities fall just short of getting the ignite the gun can get those last few stacks you need.

    High Mobility+ Bombardiers is one of my favorite builds as of late. It's just so fun to run in and dodge out of a group of enemies, get that Restoration x2 and scorch several enemies in a decent radius. Then it's a simple matter of cleaning them up. It works well against bosses too, I noticed in some nightfalls (Just don't GM with it as it requires you to get close to a group of enemies and you'd just get 1shot)

    What’s great is I’ve been using spines for multiple seasons with a demo/AJ primary and exotic heavy with nearly the same exact loop one can build into now in solar 3.0; it’s just even better now and an incandescent primary can be better than my previous bxr. I run explosive wellmaker, bountiful wells, font of might, for the energy bump to my abilities and primary damage bump on top of radiance and adrenaline junkie (or whatever stacks at this point). Impact induction on the gloves so each hit from fan of knives goes back into tripmine. Whatever I can do to make dodge come back quicker which refreshes restoration and radiant which I can boost to both be 15+ seconds continuously. If my explosions don’t kill a target outright that is what scorch and ignite are for, to wear it down and do the high chunk on the back end. I use on your mark for a pocket dragon shadow and make all my weapons go XGames mode and for the extra build potential, which is better IMO than GPG.
    When it comes to Caliban, you can build into extreme AOE range on the ignites and the damage is so high on ignites that even in high end content I can picture weakening a yellow bar, hitting the knife headshot and watching large yellow damage numbers just rip through a room. I want to try it myself in lost sectors but it has potential to be useful and fun, if not meta. Ignite damage is for sure the key to most of these being master/GM/contest mode ready, the room level damage output seems very large.

    As someone who is using the ahamkara's spine a lot lately a couple of small things that can help knowing. Ignitions and GPG count as "ability damage" and will give tripmine energy. If you run ember of ashes a tripmine hit and the knife that scorches you get a guaranteed ignition, this gives the grenade back nearly every time.

    Lucky pants is basically a second heavy weapon.
    Stareater can bring your super cooldown to like ~20-30s depending on the situation and build.
    You can be endlessly invis with the helmet.
    You can let everything explode with a lot of builds, like the new gloves, the ahamkara gaunlets or just Skyburners Oath+weighted knife.
    The healing by the artifact mod is even safer compared to Warlock and titans, because the dodge itself lets you „dodge“ bullets, while the other classes get hit in the meantime.
    As hunter you can easily play the northern moon event to 6 witches completely solo, with different builds. The consistency is just insane.

    I'm using Assassin's Cowl for general play and Arthrys' for endgame.
    Assassin's Cowl + Knock Em Down + the fragment that grants radiant on powered melee hits, allows you to constantly chain melees, health and invis just by getting a powered melee kill. Very easy to build and effective.
    Arthrys' is very strong this season, especially considering the lack of short range weapons for Unstoppable, and using an Anti-Barrier Pulse or Overload AR/SMG can easily proc its perk, and Weighted Knife not only stuns Unstoppable, the damage increases significantly.

    I love that Young Ahamkara Spine is finally getting its due. It was one of my favorites and I had several builds with it, but it was always held back because middle tree solar was lacking overall. I've been so happy with the Solar 3.0 changes mostly because what had been a sort of meme build I'd use for fun is now top tier.
    There's a couple hidden intrinsics with Young Ahamkara. It grants Fastball and you also become immune to your own tripmine explosions. One problem with GPG is that it will kill you. Something I use a lot with this build is throwing tripmines directly downwards to kill everything around me, and if GPG comes up right before the throw that becomes suicide. I greatly prefer Knock 'em Down for the extra fragment and the lack of suicide.

    Athrys may be good to use when you are the div of the team, while you build the bubble it will almost instantly get you maxed on the exotic perk, will debuff the target and make it way easier to hit the crit(if the enemy is a overload its even better) and this damage is almost the same as one shot of 3 shot goldie
    It may have some problems with binds if you try to melee while shooting(for some reason if you try to do this when having charged and uncharged to the same bind it will do the uncharged)but overal it's a decent option for damage when running div

    Something I haven't gotten around to trying yet but want to try is using the new "lightweight" knife, not the heavy one, not the explosive one. I can't remember exactly which fragments I used, but I recall the idea of the build was to become radiant when hitting a target with knife (and killing to recharge it instantly), the kill scorches nearby targets, and the knife can then be thrown onto a scorched target to make them ignite, and this can chain together to clear big areas or groups.

    athry's embrace can work pretty well with the seasonal mod which ignites on solar precision final blow while radiant, weighted knife aint that hard to land in pve content anyways, even if it doesn't kill, if the target is scorched you can still trigger the ignition via the weighted knife anyways, but you do need some ways to scorch targets, trip mine is good but usually it'll straight up kill all low tier mobs unless it's match game and you throw it to a non solar shield
    a big weak point in solar hunter is that it lacks survivability, you'll need perks like unrelenting or assassin's cowl/wormhusk to heal and usually when you get too close to your ignition you'll hurt yourself or straight up die from said ignition, when classy restoration goes away (and it will), solar hunter's survivability just immediately falls flat. solar hunter can be very lethal in all occasions, but it's a glass cannon

  • @Reldan
    @Reldan Před 2 lety

    Datto, have you considered a build combining Athrys's with Skyburner's? Weighted knife ignites targets with any scorch stacks, and a single hipfire shot from Skyburner's adds just a few scorch stacks, but that's all that's needed to trigger the ignition proc. Since this often leads directly into getting the knife and your dodge back, you can go wild with ignitions. Unlike with Caliban, the ignition happens regardless of whether the knife gets the kill, which already puts it way above in usefulness. This demolishes minors, while Athrys makes the weighted knife also a tool for dealing significant damage to majors. Skyburner's in ADS being a scout is solid at getting the crits needed to proc Athrys.
    While I certainly think Young Ahamkara is the stronger build, this can still be a fun and effective way to play a Solar hunter.

    Much agree with a large amount of your points, hunters feel a LOT better than they did before but they don't have 'god mode' builds like the rest (especially now with the Warlocks getting some of their functionality back with cure on eating grenades with the fusion nad build). They are still like, super fun to use at least though, which is a nice change of pace from playing void and crying XD.
    I will say a few things though, with Young Ahamkara's you can use the exploding knife to refund grenade energy in two hits instead of one at longer ranges, though I will admit I just remembered it being the one way to get it to work before so I don't know if Knife tricks 3 hit at closer ranges is just better, but I figure in higher level content it would be more forgiving. (also Momentum Transfer is very very nice here as GBG is counted as a grenade).
    And for Athrys's embrace, with torches and knock em down you don't need to hit the crit to get the knife refund, so it would honestly probably be a better build for late game just in general as you can super amp your knife and even if you miss it will *probably* bounce into a target and kill it anyway, giving you your knife back regardless. I'd probably go for that with Impact Induction for a 'continual cycling' build that doesn't require much set up. (and GBG again cause it's just fun).
    For me though I've locked into using Frostees actually, and running that with exploding knife and healing grenade. Hunters have never really had survivability tools before so it's been really fun running 100 res 100 mob with about 70 discipline and Empyrean with a solar weapon (as you'll be running one for GBG anyway) and just slapping someone with a proximity knife, chucking a nade at the ground, and then just slaying with said solar weapon while running around to get ones abilities back (if the knife wasn't refunded at least, otherwise just keep throwing that until running needs to happen again). I tend to couple it with Explosive Personality with Enhanced Field Prep/Unrelenting and it's actually really fun. Osmosis weapon in the first slot (I got a Last Breath but planning to swap it with Firefright as soon as I can craft it) and you are just golden in having a hybrid weapon/ability build that lets you do both pretty well. (also explosive well maker, the rest is up to you but I HIGHLY recommend explosive wellmaker, you make those things like crazy with EVERything in your kit giving you wells).
    I know this isn't really a hyper focused idea though so understandably not something to go over in this video format, but yea! Hope it's a fun idea for those that read this (or at least the explosive wellmaker part, *Highly recommmenddd*).

    I pick the fragment that increases target acquisition over solace. You'd be amazed how much easier everything is to hit with it than without it. ...And I also have the fragment that makes enemies ignite when killed by your super over singeing and char. My dodge comes back every 12 to 14 seconds and hunters are THE WORST at scorching anything, so it's a good thing you require little to no scorching to excel as a solar hunter. Char isn't useful unless you can benefit from scorching them. GPG works with solar weapons too, in addition to well mods pigeonholing you into use the same type as your subclass, so it's no problem if you don't scorch to start with.

  • @xackk9198
    @xackk9198 Před 2 lety

    Pair Weighted Knife with Incandescent/Scorch from the Tripmine grenade, and it will auto ignite a scorched target on hit, and if you're Radiant, you get your knife right back, and if you miss and use Gambler's Dodge to get it back, a crit with the Weighted Knife gives you back dodge immediately. I was pairing this build with Bombadiers, but it's SO much more effective with YAS since trip nades Scorch very well, and your knife with then give you back your dodge, and grenade, and also ignite scorched targets. It's a REALLY powerful build. You can use Weighted Knife as a poor man's Caliban's Hand and then run another exotic of your choice.
