Destiny 2: One-Two Dead - Liar's Handshake & Assassin's Cowl Hunter Builds

  • Long time Hunters probably know about Liar's Handshake, but newcomers have probably barely touched this exotic at all. Today, let's explore the base of a build that is one of the most lethal, but also one of the riskiest to pull off in end game content.
    A quick note on mods: I didn't really find anything that was making me excited, however, something I've realized after the fact is that the potential for a Reaping Wellmaker/Well of Tenacity setup is possible. However, Reaping Wellmaker only works on weapon final blows, not any final blows, which means you'd need to kill with your shotgun (or some other gun). That's not outside the realm of possibility though, I just dunno how much I'd like it because your melee is doing the bulk of the work. However, feel free to try it out and let me know how you like it. I would do it, but, I'm in Europe right now and don't have a computer.

    Mods wise I use this with Melee wellmaker, Well of ions (or font of might depending on the content), Reaping Wellmaker, Well of Tenacity and Elemental time dilation. Reaping Wellmaker gets you a void well if you get a weapon kill after a dodge, which you then collect to activate Well of Tenacity, which gives resist x3, then punch something else until it dies. Punch, dodge, Shoot, repeat.

    I’m a Hunter main who was already this exact build. One mod build I recommend for high end content is 1 Reaping Wellmaker, 1 Elemental Time Dilation, and 3 Well of Tenacity. This gives you high uptime on extra damage resist, plus 100 Resilience, plus the fragment that gives you extra damage resist when surrounded. You just have so much survivability. I love it.

    I don’t know if this is a commonly known thing, and I just learned about it about a week ago when I was making this build. But if you have lethal current up, it takes 1 more punch to activate cross counter. First punch gets rid of lethal current, second punch primes cross counter, then third punch is the power punch. So if you’re running one-two punch shotty, it’s more like one-two-three punch. To conserve ammo, I’d recommend shooting before the third punch if you just dodged.

    One important factor to note about these builds is that if a target dies to the Jolt of your Melee ability and NOT your actual Melee, then you will NOT get your dodge back since you still have your Melee. Jolt activates after you Melee the target with Lethal Current up so it’s very possible for you to kill a tankier target with Jolt instead of your Melee.
    This is important to know because you can quite easily screw up your flow if you don’t know this. You might run up to a more tanky enemy and expect to have your dodge to activate Lethal Current for your extra Melee damage from Jolt just for it to still be on cooldown.

    • @zeromythosver.

    Loved the video, went over most scenarios, use cases and pitfalls of this build. I've been waiting to run liar's handshake again for a while and jolt this season has made it an absolute monster.
    I just want to add on one more thing, a suggestion for another video if you will, I know it's not void season but I feel like Gyrfalcon's hauberk, the new hunter exotic armor piece from this season is quite ridiculous on void 3.0 and has GM potential. When combined with Heartshadow, the duality exotic, you can make most champions disappear with 1 heavy sword swing (haven't tried it in master content so can't verify how well it does under leveled). Even if you don't want to risk running a sword in high end content with gyrfalcon's, the new LFR Taipan that the game just hands out to everyone, becomes even stronger with this weapon, I have a feeling champions in GMs would not stand a chance with this combo.
    For the rest of the build, I'm trying to build into void elemental wells, running well of tenacity, high resil, mobil and recov (as high as you can get em anyway), suppresor nades to keep orange bars and other ads from blowing you up with their nades, grenade kickstart to get your nade back quicker; echo of obscurity and instability are a good start, you can fill in the other slots with whatever fragments you like. (Also running funnelweb to maximise on gyrfalcon's damage boost with echo of instability, can swap out with any void weapon of your liking)

    I soloed my first legend difficulty campaign mission with this build. It took me 45 minutes because I was careless a few times but once I get used to the flow I’ll get more consistent. I love how this plays! I use well of ions along with it along with elemental time dilation and as long as the melee creates a elemental well you will have combination blow and well of ions proc-ed for the same amount of time.

    • @goodvibesrav
      @goodvibesrav Před rokem +1

      not to burst your bubble but well of ions only buffs your first melee and then it goes away until you reprock it, so time dilation doesn’t work super well with it; it just gives you a longer time to use that one melee which you’re normally gonna be doing quickly anyway

      @@goodvibesrav true that , I wish it was 2 or 3 hit of melee instead of just 1 , but I guess it’s good enough to help re-chain Combination Blow to guarantee a melee kill before Lethal Current kill the ads , sometime it sort of helped with one shotting an orange bar bell keeper in Duality , but not really a game changer crucial mod . I’d say it’s good if you have a mod slot to spare

    @Confidential1133 Před rokem +3

    FYI, aoe jolt kills can proc explosive wellmaker which will make a solar well that you can use well of life with in order to get more healing instead of only relying on combination blow to heal you. In my experience, arc bolt grenade jolting multi kills almost guarantee a solar well so if you want even more survivability on top of it all, use those two mods.

  • @k.schuffs4657
    @k.schuffs4657 Před rokem +4

    I think its important to note that cross counter only gives an 80% buff if used with one-two punch. You also cant stack cross counter with lethal current as the hit that procs cross counter will use lethal current. If youre running some sort of well of tenacity build and can tank a melee easily you could get both buffs like that.

I run melee wellmaker, well of ions, overcharge wellmaker, elemental charge, and reactive pulse. I know you said reactive pulse is still bad and I agree the arc shockwave is basically useless. BUT, the secondary effect of getting a strong overshield during a finisher, plus that finisher making two wells to proc well of ions immediately, plus Spark of Volts to instantly make you amplified when you do a finisher...yea. It's pretty fun. Again the finisher aspect might be unnecessary to some people, but it's just how I personally like to run the build.

    Some suggestions for our new players-
    Really do suggest using hands on (Arc Helmet mod) as it gives you super energy for getting melee kills, which you get ALOT of
    Melee Wellmaker (Goes on anything) because it creates arc wells of light for killing with your melee which can recharge your abilities and-
    Well of Ions, (Arc mod) because when you pick Arc wells up, they make your next melee do more damage, which can be super helpful in endgame content or hard content.
    Finally, I suggest using Bountiful wells (Solar mod) for extra wells with another Melee Wellmaker, or, if you’re quirky, you could do something with a void mod called Protective light (since you’ll be up close and personal) or this arc mod called seeking wells (which is just kinda nice to have)
    The great thing with this build like Datto said, is that it’s super easy to just pick up and use without the complicated mod stuff. I still think mods can make this absolutely busted, so you should figure out what’s fun to you and try stuff out. It’s hard to get your hands on mods as a new player so make sure to check Ada-1 and keep opening those engrams

    Eyyy, glad to see my main build featured in a Datto video. I've been using LH for a long time, and happy to see it become much more viable in Arc 3.0. I think the only issue I've had with it so far is Cross Counter not reliably activating after hitting with the Lethal Current charged punch, sometimes taking 2 or 3 extra hits to activate. Not sure if you've experienced that as well, or if it's just a bug, but I've been having a blast with it overall. An add-slaying machine even if not in the thick of things, when used in conjunction with Trinity Ghoul or anything with Voltshot.

All you really need is some well mods just for ability regen and font of wisdom and or might, orb regeneration on solar star eaters, and now you regen a ton of health from orbs, clear ads easy, and you have one of the most damaging supers in the game.

    Probably should mention the activation requirements on Liar's handshake only affects the second melee when using combination blow, since you need to "use" an arc melee. So when you 1 shot/melee the champions with liars equipped in the legend lost sectors it actually doesn't add any amount of damage since they're dead from the jolt proc. This also means one two punch builds are always 1 shot 2 punching beefier enemies, which is where the real damage comes in since you can get 2 melees off for a single one two proc, and its really the only time you see a damage buff for liars handshake. I've actually been opting to not run Flow State and instead run Tempest Strike with Lethal Current for most content. Tempest used to suck before 3.0 because it was hard to line up a bunch of guys at once, but they gave it some light tracking now (the arc line will curve a bit to hit a target) and the fact that it jolts now makes it a great red bar killer at medium range (maybe it did some of that before 3.0, but if so I never noticed). You basically just pick a group of red bars and aim for the guy in the middle and watch them all die. Basically my game plan is to jolt all the things and make my method for causing the jolt either Lethal Current Combo Blow or Tempest Strike on a moment to moment basis depending on how far away I am from the thing I want to jolt. Only problem with it is losing melee charge to Tempest Strike since it doesn't recharge my dodge like Combo Blow. I've been trying to supplement this with Fr0st-EE5 for ability regen (I'm amplified with jolt multikills and running all the time anyway) and also some Arc Wells (currently through Overcharge Wellmaker cause I run Spark of Volts to have a reliable amplified method if I ever don't jolt multikill). So far it's pretty solid in most content, but I worry it's not as effective in higher end content when compared to builds like these. Regardless I definitely find it a lot more fun than just spamming the same melee over and over again cause with this build I feel like I have some utility belt options to change up what I do, so I'm going to continue to try and workshop it to see if I can push it up to end game level. (I haven't really dived into crafting a build specific weapon with things like Pugilist, Swashbuckler, and Voltshot yet, so maybe that would kick this up a notch.)

    I used to use this build, but decided to go a different route with Gathering Storm: Star-eater Scales. Gathering Storm does a ton of damage and Arc subclasses can naturally generate orbs by just getting kills while being Amplified. With Energy Converter, I'm getting about half of my Super back and will naturally be picking up orbs anyway and Star-eater Scales gives me more Super energy from those orbs too. We also have some great Arc weapons and can run Harmonic Siphon. My favorite Ignition Code also has Thresh on it just to get me maxed out quicker.

Pair this with wish ender, kinetic siphon, and spark of amplitude. This lets you make 2 orbs at once on a multi kill while amplified, building up your super crazy fast. I ran the master nightfall today and made 60+ orbs per run several times in a row.

    The Wastelander M5 with one-two punch is the best shotgun for the job because it has a smaller reticle so it’s easier to go hit all pellets. Plus it has hot swap. Adding tractor cannon is fantastic for suppressing all abilities and it makes the enemy more vulnerable to ALL incoming damage. So after you have stacked cross counter and combination blow, you debuff with tractor cannon and start one-two punch, punch twice and shoot again. It’s stupid good. I use nothing else.

    I’ve used both assassins cowl and liars handshake with this setup, and the conclusion I came to was that even for survivability, in endgame content (I’ve done master ketchkrash, nightfalls, and lost sectors with this) liars is better.
    Datto did not mention in the video that cross counter also gives you health when you land it. What this means is that in a situation where you are overwhelmed, you can get health back on melee HITS, not KILLS, which is super valuable in content where stuff is harder to kill. You can just spam the punch to stay alive. The damage bonus of cross counter is also really helpful for ramping up combination blow in endgame. And again, this bonus activates on hits instead of kills. When you do land kills with liars (which happens more often than assassins cowl because of the bonus damage) you can dodge, and the amplified dodge is EXCELLENT for survivability, even when I was 15-20 levels under.
    This is something that assassins cowl really struggles with. With assassins cowl, any time I punched and did not land a kill, I was fucked, since everything assassins cowl gives relies on landing a kill

Instead of 2 200% buffs stacking multiplicatively cross counter reduces to 80% (melee*3*1.8=440%. you get pretty much the same damage from the two seperate melees as from stacking (400% vs 440%).

    I ran through the entirety of the legend campaign as a returning player (meaning I didn't have a lot of the nice well/combat mods) using the liars handshake build. It worked till the final encounter and from there I had to switch to a more passive arc style. I also tried using the build with solo legend sectors (while being under power as well.) Eventually I swapped to Crosse's "Phantom fister" build where it uses Cowl.
    Both exotics have there merit but personally I prefer Cowl. This is because Jolt arc kills still make you invisible/proc the effects of the helmet in general. In general you feel so much safer and the loss of handshake's damage is more than made up if you have a one two punch shottie. The benefit of running Liar's imo is that you're not stuck to using a one two punch shotgun. It definitely does help the consistency but you can live without it.
    Some people might value the loadout freedom that brings. As far as modding goes i'd personally lean into wells since you can benefit from explosive well maker with this build meaning you can get other nice QoL stuff going on. CWL just doesn't really fit with the setup for me.
