    Italy were not defensive against Brazil in 1982. This is a bizarre myth maintained by the Anglo-Saxons. The score line should have read 4-2 to Italy as a goal was disallowed in an otherwise flawless performance by the referee Kline from Israel (his assistant actually messed up). Italy attacked incessantly and were worthy winners. Brazil's problem was that they lacked a quality centre forward in their great '82 team.

      Steve Jones Your assessment is spot on. It is arguably the greatest game ever played. Brazil had Zico but Serginho was a joke. He shanked a clear goal in the first half. Brazil brought on Isidoro in the second half but he should have started instead. Zoff made arguably the greatest save in a World Cup tournament towards the end of the match which would have given Brazil the result it needed to go through had it gone in. I still have this match on VHS cassette. LOL!!

    He was not violent, he was never expelled for a violent foul.
    He has only been sent off once in his career, for hitting the ball with his hand.
    Maradona said he was violent, but the truth is that Maradona was sent off for a kick in the belly of a Brazilian national team player.

    I believe Maradonna's "hand of god" was a direct result of having played against Gentile in 82! Maradonna was still naive & innocent in 82, but after having faced Gentile he realized that you can also win by slightly cheating. He was a different player in 86 for better or worse, and the rest as they say is history.

    He was a brute lacking defensive skills. Hence used strong arm tactics throughout his career. In today's referring his career would have been over pretty fast due to the incessant red cards he would have received. The best defenders of Italy from the 80s and 90s were baresi and maldini.

    • @gunternetzer9621
      @gunternetzer9621 Před rokem

      Ball winning is a euphemism for kicking people. If you like your football in a skilled and cultured groove it is possible to win the ball without doing this - the classic example from the past is Jean Tigana from the great French midfield of the 80’s. The wiry man from Mali was never a chopper; more of an interventionist; anticipating passes and cutting them out - always the first attacking player to get back to help in defence and always available just outside his own penalty area if a colleague won the ball in defence. From there with one deft pass he turned defence into attack. He often cut out opposing attacks by intercepting passes in midfield at the precise spot where the ball could be won, without a tackle and certainly not by kicking anyone. The art of interception sets the quality defenders and midfield players a big step apart from players who might be quicker, but rarely look and think.

    Mr Gentile:
    - You know that, in this day and age, you would be red-carded multiple times.
    - FIFA actually thought about getting tougher on dirty defenders after you fouled Maradona 21 times in 1982 and only received one yellow card.

      In this game, Gentile was called 23 fouls (some fouls were not called at all, he actually committed more than 30) and received only one yellow card. That 23-to-1 disproportion had not been seen and was not to be seen again in any World Cup. Joao Havelange put pressure on FIFA Referee Committee so that refereeing would never again be so lenient. Havelange (of Brazilian origin) wanted to preserve elegant South American playmakers against atrocious defenders, mostly Italians and Germans.

Look at the final whistle when Gentile goes to hug Balaci at their way to the locker-rooms.. All the entire match Gentile was a "toy".. Balaci asked him several times "That is Antognoni ? Yes. That is Rossi ? Yes.. But who are you ? said Balaci to Gentile.. Then Gentile explodes :))) .. Balaci had the most higher cheek in the history of romanian football.. even more than Hagi or Dobrin.. Balaci at the age of 18 was the leader of the national team..

    Don't know what's there to celebrate. Gentile was not a football player, he was a butcher. Of course the rules and the refs made it possible in the end; by todays standards this brute would have been send off within 30 minutes of the match. But with the obviously bought Romanian ref he could commit no less than 23 fouls against Maradona, 11 in the first half alone and 12 having been booked. His yellow card he got at the end of first half after seeing Maradona (!) get booked for complaining about him after having received 10 fouls in 40 minutes. That's apparently he knew to what extent the ref was in the sack of Italy. So he turned to Maradona and punched his fist into his face. What would be an instant red card even by 1982 standards got him his booking, but that didn't hinder him to foul even more in second half.
