Old Hungarian begin fragmentarily in epigraphy in the Old Hungarian script beginning in the 10th century; isolated Hungarian words are attested in manuscript tradition from the turn of the 11th century. The oldest surviving coherent text in Old Hungarian is the Funeral Sermon and Prayer, dated to 1192.
The phonetic system of Hungarian went through large changes in the Old Hungarian period. The most important change was the disappearance of the original Uralic word-ending vowels, which eroded in many descendant languages.
It developed into Early Modern Hungarian by the 16th century.

As a Hungarian, hearing Old Hungarian spoken like this makes me feel as if I can finally experience the perspective of a Spanish man visiting Italy. Everything makes sense, and if I concentrate I can get the point. But it all sounds strange and old fashioned.

As a Hungarian and a linguist, I'd like to add something to the translation (not your fault, as the text was written/spoken like this", but "munkás világ" does not really mean "back-breaking world", but rather "world of suffering/pain"; or "a painful world", as the word "munka" was borrorwed from a Slavic language, where its original meaning was "pain, suffering" (yeah, we, Hungarians, literally call work "suffering", lol XD)
...Muka not munka. At least in Serbian and Croatian but I think in other Slavic languages there's no word muNka or that word was altered in Magyar. Yes, muka can mean state of feeling sick but also suffering (in the term of turbulent hard times), misfortune or torture, many synonyms - patnja is also real meaning for suffering, pain is said bol. Munka perhaps entered Hungarian language after Ottoman raids, incursions and conquerings rather than Mongol invasion which was only episode. Muka od posla - sick/ness of job 😁🤘 Üdvözlettel 👍
@@zoranpavlovic9540 Yeah, we have actually got the word when there was still a nasal U sound (and nasa vowels in general) in the Slavic languages (just like gomba - mushroom). You guys have lost this nasalization, and since we didn't have any but wanted to write it as-is, we've setteld for an extra N or M for nasalization's sake.

Can read without understanding but have no chance to learn to speak since I live out of area settled by Magyars however have many great friends. Know basical phrases only. It would be too much after 3 non-Slavic languages. Old Magyar didn't suffer so many changes to my ears btw. E.g. Estonian sounds closest to Hungarian to my ears but not any similar word as in Slavic languages (we all understand each other when talk personally) so I don't believe Hungarian understand Estonian as I understand Poles.

No, we don't understand either Estonian or Finnish, but strangely they both sound thrillingly familiar - like when you hear people speaking from a distance. You're trying to focus and connect the dots, but no luck.

Nekem anyukam magyar(Ungarndeutscherin Sopronbol, es neki koszonhetoen megtanultam magyarul is, bar ezt a nyelvet soha nem tanultam), de oszinten szolva jobban beszelek nemetul (mind osztrak Hochdeutsch, mind pedig az ugynevezett wienerisch Dialektust.), mint magyarul, leven, hogy Ausztriaban eltem es tanultam eddigi 17 evemet. Azonban a nemet nyelv eseteben elmondhato, hogy sok tavolabbi nemet dialektust (pl. alemannisch Svajcban, vage plattdeutsch Hamburgan) nehezebben ertheto szamomra, mint az omagyar a modern magyarhoz viszonyotva. A nemet nyelv eseteben viszont szerintem nem lehetseges ilyesfajta ‘Onemet’ parhuzamot vonni, mivel a ma beszelt quasi egyseges standarddeutsch egy ‘mesterseges’ nyelv melynek ezaltal nincsen egy egyseges onemet megfeleloje. Viszont mondjuk az altalam is beszelt mittelbairisch-wienerisch dialektus kapcsan szivesen megtekintenek egy hasonlo videot osszehasonlitas keppen. Grüße aus Breitenfurt bei Wien🇦🇹🇭🇺❤️
@@ohididenes812 Okcitán "dialektus" alatt az okcitán (provanszál) nyelvre gondolsz? Magyar vagyok, de felsőfokon beszélek franciául, a provanszál pedig nem egy dialektus, hanem egy különálló nyelv. Sőt a provanszálnak önmagában vannak dialektusai Provencetól Toulouseig. Olyan, mint a spanyol és a katalán. Sőt, konkrétan a katalán és a provanszál közelebb állnak egymáshoz, mint a provanszál a franciához, vagy a katalán a spanyolhoz. Önálló, állam nélküli újlatin nyelv.
A provanszál északi nyelvjárásai kicsit közelebb állnak kiejtésben a franciához, a déliek a katalánhoz illetve spanyolhoz. Emberi Jogok Egyetemes Nyilatkozatának első két mondata "sztenderd" (déli) provanszálul:
Totas las personas nàisson liuras e parièras en dignitat e en dreches. Son cargadas de rason e de consciéncia e mai lor se cal comportar entre elas amb un eime de frairetat.
Északi provanszálul:

Bónusz katalánul:
Tots els éssers humans neixen lliures i iguals en dignitat i en drets. Són dotats de raó i de consciència, i han de comportar-se fraternalment els uns amb els altres.
És spanyolul:
Todos los seres humanos nacen libres e iguales en dignidad y derechos y, dotados como están de razón y conciencia, deben comportarse fraternalmente los unos con los otros.
Az uráli nyelvek elég konzervatívak.
Érdekes, hogy mennyit fejlődött a nyelvünk azóta, de ha összehasonlítjuk (vagy jobban figyelünk) akkor meghalljuk benne a magyar szavakat.

Igazából csak az irásunk fejlődött sokat.... Ha rendesen el tudnák olvasni, kb 2 olyan szó van az egészben, amit nem használ senki pl "Heu" , de a töbi szó vagy ugyanaz, mint most, vagy még most is használatos tájszólásként.
Előfordulhat, hogy olyan szerzetes vetette papírra, aki nem is beszélt magyarul. Nem beszélve arról, hogy a latin írásjelek nem fedik le a magyar ABC-t 😊

A XII. században még nem volt elfogadott latin ábécés átírata a magyar nyelvnek, vagyis az a betű jelenthetett bármit. Erre a legjobb példa az mondjuk az, hogy gimiylc, ami így értelmetlen, viszont, ha tudod, hogy a g a gy, az i az ü, az iy az ö a c meg a cs (a többi betű ugyanaz), akkor azt kapod, hogy gyümölcs. Valamikor a 15. századtól kezd el kialakulni a ma használatos betű készlet, és kb az az időszak az, amikortól a magyarul leírt versek tökéletesen olvashatóak és érthetőek a mai embernek.

It is read by a contemporary person. We do not really know how it was sounding originally.
It sounds like the stereotipical rural hungarian.
@@PeterVerhas We have fairly good ideas, it's not like the pronunciation is wildly off. If anything there is a chance that the original text was even easier to understand spoken out loud because some spelling and grammar choices by the author makes it clear he was improvising when writing down the text. Imagine trying to write down a Hungarian text ONLY using the English alphabet, English sounds and rules of English grammar. You might write a word a certain way because of how you think the closest English sound is, but another Hungarian might write it a different way, and both of your solutions end up being more difficult to understand than the original spoken word. The "rules" of the Hungarian language and the way we write it is rather arbitrary. People literally got together and decided to establish the rules and decided on which regional language variant should become the standard and how the spelling should work. There is no reason why "on the table" should be asztalon rather than asztal'on or asztal-on or asztal on or astal-on or even ostol-o' or something else.
It would be incredibly hard to accurately reflect the language if you did not have that convention at all, nor any other precedents. The only thing the original author could rely on was Latin.

An average educated Hungarian person understands (or should understand) both scripts. The old one is taught in the elementary school as a first written (at least with Latin characters) Hungarian text.
As for the 'modern Hungarian' in the video, it's not modern, but newer, a later form of the old funeral speech, full of archaic tenses, we don't speak like this today. Anyway, it sounds old fashioned and archaic, but fully understandable. If somebody doesn't understand it, that his or her problem.
"Vala", "valék", "mondá" etc we don't use them anymore, but in the literature you meet them frequently. E.g. János Kodolányi's wonderful novel, Friar Julian, the story is full with those oldy expressions.
Some of those tenses still in use by old folks in Transylvania, even today, "mondta volt, mondá" etc. It perfectly understandable. You can find this kind of text in the Bible too.
It's like in English, 'thou art, thou hast, she knoweth etc.' Old, out of use, but you can understand them.
You have to remeber that the Hungarians learned to write in the Latin alphabet by their Bavarian/Austrian neighbors and by missionizing monks that also came from there. The Old Hungarian text looks a bit exotic, because it uses exactly the same writing conventions like Middle High German, the long s (ſ) or u instead of v/w, which comes from classic latin. When you transcribe the text into modern writing convention it does not look so different from modern Hungarian anymore.
That's a pretty slight change if you take it into account that it has been 827-830 years since it was written. Also, it was copied from another text, so it might be a bit older.
Also, I'm not exactly sure about the differences. You see, it was written well before the latin alphabet was fully adapted to the language.

As a native hungarian if I close my eyes and listen to this "old hungarian", I can understand around 50%. So more or less I know what the speech is about :)
I have one problem with this:
The scribe must have been struggled when he wrote this scripture down, as he had to use the latin alphabet, which only had 24 letters, while the hungarian alphabet has 40 (the extended has 44)
Famous example for this is the word >gyümölcs< (fruit), where the first two (gy) and last two (cs) letters in fact are just 1 vowel; the first simply doesn't exist in any other language I am aware of (and certainly not in other european languages), and you also will not find the later in Europe
(cs=q ; dz=z ; dzs=zh in mandarine chinese - those are also not exactly equal, but at least very similar)
So if you look at the word >gyümölcs< again and break it down to vowels, then you get the following:
>gy-ü-m-ö-l-cs< and here you can see, that there are only 2 letters in it, which had an equivalent in the latin alphabet: "m" and "l"
Because of this many words in this text are written in a different way each time it appears in the text,
so this text is likely NOT any kind of evidence for "Old Hungarian" pronunciation - nor for grammatic

Gy, m, l, cs are consonants, not vowels. Vowels are the ü, ö in this word. Vowel = magánhangzó, Consonant = mássalhangzó.

You'll only be able to speak it in 1 country on the entire world. What use is in that?
The Old-Hungarian writing method is NOT in Latin characters, but in the runic script that still exists today ( the old Hungarian character set is included in the ISO/IEC 10646:2017).
Here, in the 11th-12th centuries, they tried to write down the Hungarian text in Latin letters based on hearing, even by Latin-speaking priests who barely knew Hungarian... Certain letters (é, ü, ö, sz...) were not interpreted and replaced with other letters. IF you read the old Hungarian text, I think it is completely understandable.
This is not the oldest surviving Hunagrian text, but the oldest survived written with Latin letters.

De ők úgy is megértik egymást ha csak a saját nyelvükön beszélnek , és kérdi tőlem osztrák kollégám , hogy én melyik nyelvet értem így , a lengyelt ? Mondom még véletlen se , konkrétan egyik nyelvet sem , és egyedül ezekkel az ómagyar szövegekkel tudom elképzelni milyen lehet nekik egymással .
Pontosan. Egyébként szégyen az osztráktól, hogy a magyart szláv nyelvnek gondolja, mondjuk nem valami magas az oktatásuk színvonala (személyes tapasztalat). Az idősebb generáció még jobban ismeri a magyarokat.

@@flywings111Tényleg nem igazán műveltek az osztrákok. Többségüknek fogalma sincs a saját történelméről, vagy arról, hogy mi van a patakon túl, és a szép statisztikák ellenére idegen nyelvet sem beszélnek :)
A türk nyelvekkel van ténylegesen sok rokonság nyelvtanilag és szókészletben is, de való igaz, hogy hiába beszélne hozzám egy török vagy azeri, 1-2 szót jó, ha elcsípnék abból, amit mond, a többit totál nem érteném, így hiába van bizonyítható hasonlóság, összességében fogalmam se lenne, hogy mit akarnak közölni.
Hasonló érzés meglátogatni Erdélyt. Ott is magyarul beszélnek, de ezerszer parasztosabb, mint itt bármelyik vidéki falunak a beszédi stílusa.

I think so too as native Hungarian , but when I came to the uk I worked in the local hospital and a Japanese couple were in a side room with closed doors and they sounded like they were arguing as they seemed to be shouting at each other that was strange experience , I only heard Japanese from Tekken vdo games growing up 😂

Just beware that the time this was written, the latin alphabet for Hungarian did not have proper letters for all sounds - so difference could have been even smaller. Already is very understandable, but knowing only what is written is not the same as how it was pronounced.

The letters separately are: gy-ü-m-ö-l-cs
Only 2 letters are represented in the latin alphabet which has 24 letters in total
Hungarian has 44, so imagine the original writer of this text, it must have been a torture to jot it down 😅

the hardest thing to understand the funeral sermon, and other old scrips is, that, there was no adequate alphabet during the timeperiod thus words had been distorted largely. otherwise the translation to modern Hungarian is not really neccessary.
As a Bulgarian I understood 0% of Hungarian and even less of Old Hungarian. 😅
As a Romanian understood 0 % ... same.

Probably the old Hungarian language is more similar to the language of their ancestors from the Khanti and Mansi regions of Siberia.

This is a bit misleading. Because the written form of the Hungarian language was not written with the Latin alphabet. There is a transcription where the person who transcribed it (presumably did not even know Hungarian) roughly guessed which letter it should be. In addition, he was in trouble, because there are about 20 letters less in Latin than in Hungarian. Gimilc -> Gyümölcs. üö (no such letter in latin) -> i, Gy (no double letter in latin, and it was writen in old hungarian alphabet with one sign) -> g, cs -> c is the same as g.

@@shrimpfry880 There were old written documents, but they were destroyed during the Turkish occupation. In fact, practically only the death speech has survived, which is believed to have been copied from runic writing into the Latin alphabet by a non-Hungarian speaking monk.

this has to do with the history of the steppe people though. They also worshipped our same god, eternal blue sky Tengri.
@@user-jn6nh7om6e Which makes sense, since when the Uralic language groups are believed to have split off, they were still quite primitive and the more nuanced words relating to full scale warfare you'd see when people become more organized didn't exist yet, which is only why really the words for bow and arrow are shared when it comes to weapons. Similarly, in Baltic Finnic languages, words for things like sword, spear, helmet and so on are of proto-Baltic/Germanic origin. Although things like the word for war itself goes all the way back to the proto-Uralic times and is shared among many Uralic languages. But the interesting thing is, that despite many weapons being foreign borrowings among Baltic Finnic languages, the words relating to the act of smithing itself are largely native inventions and very old.

The Funeral Sermon is not the oldest hungarian text, but the oldest hungarian script 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭. We used an ancient runic writing system and have many many archeologic findings with this script, some are older than the sermon by 1-200 years. Somehow they aren't considered as important historic language examples.
What is referred here as "hungarian" is not modern contemporary hungarian. It also sounds very archaic. Only the spelling is contemporary.
All of the words from the middle paragraph are found in modern Hungarian. It doesn't sound especially natural. But you have to remember that it's a prayer, it's supposed to rhyme.

Yes, because it is the oldish 'vala' and - á/-é ending etc past time(maybe it is from Middle Hungarian?) form, and not the modern - t/-tt form.

I personally got to knew a man from Szeklerland back in the 1990's who used exactly these grammatical constructs for past and future tenses in his everyday spoken language. It was rare back then, also in Szeklerland outside the churches, but still used by some ordinary people in some regions. I am a Calvinist ("református") born and raised in Transsylvania, and in the 70's and 80's all prayers learned by me as a child used these archaic constructs, so we exactly knew what they meant. My generation and older people still use them in their prayers. Just a short fragment from the Apostolic Creed as I learned it and use it when I pray, to understand what I mean: " Harmadnapra halottaiból feltámada, felméne a mennybe, ül az Atyaisten jobbján, onnan lészen eljövendő, ítélni eleveneket és holtakat". The Funeral Sermon is a clerical text, basically a prayer, and prayers indeed have long been and still are recited like this, in many churches e.g. in the Szeklerland. In addition, every living Hungarian adult understands 100% of the text in the middle, be it written or said, even though it contains grammatical constructs that aren't used anymore in the everyday colloquial speech outside the churches. So yes, it IS Hungarian. Modern Hungarian does not only mean contemporary colloquial Hungarian of Budapest, it includes the Hungarian used in the churches and the various spoken dialects as well, i.m.o. Again: sorry, but you are wrong. Just my two pence.

Several commenters say here that the old Hungarian sounds similar to Sekler or Csángó. Then you should perhaps understand that it is entirely up to the speaker how he pronounces the written text, he could have pronounced it like a Palóc or any other regional accent.

The modern Hungarian text is a literally translation of the Old Hungarian one and it still contains archaic forms. I mean, we clearly understand it, just we don't use it. Like 'teremté' what would be 'teremtette' today. 'Adá neki' would be 'adta neki' correctly. 'Evék' would be 'evett' and etc. The word 'vala' is either disappeared(as a past time form of verbs) or it has changed to 'volt' (past time form of 'to be' ) . These all are some kind of archaic past time form what don't exist anymore.
Like this sentence in Modern Hungarian :
'Hallá holtát teremtő Istentől, de feledé.' (it still sounds oldish)
It would be more like this:
'Hallotta halálát teremtő Istentől, de feledte.'
A feledé az jelen időben van, tehát inkább feledi lenne a mai nyelven.

"Halotti beszéd" was written down by not native speakers but clerics who used Latin, so they warped the Hungarian sounds into foreign letters - the strangeness and differences mostly come from that.

The hungarian language is so aincient and magical. If you can speak it consciously, or understand it, you can understand how the life is working. So simple: Szeretet (love), gyűlölet (hate).
Szer-etet = "Szer" ( its an element, in this sentence this is the element of love), "etet" (feeds you).
Gyűl-ölet = "Gyűl/gyűlik" ( collects, gather, rally), "ölet/öl" (kills you/kill)
The hungarian language think and speak in elements: Szerelem, türelem, ijedelem, terjedelem, késedelem, jövedelem, etc.
It's sounds complicated, but if you understand it, it's became logical, simple and instinctive.

Since everyone keeps saying how similar our language is to Turkish, I'll explain. The Ottoman Empire occupied more than 40% of Hungary for almost 150 years (1541-1686, the numbers maybe a little bit wrong) and yes, we are quite a "mixed race", as we had to repopulate the country by the 18th century.
The reasons for this:
The war of liberation against the Turks and the struggles of the Rákóczi War of Independence took their toll on the country
-The occupied territory was in ruins, a large area of the country was
depopulated
-The population declined (late 15th century:
around 3.4-4 million people)
The causes of the loss of life:
-war casualties
-famine ("Little Ice Age")
-infectious diseases (plague, cholera, etc. in the 18th century).
Forms of repopulation included unorganised voluntary immigration (Romanians, Serbs, Rusyns, Slovaks, Poles, etc.) whith free land, benefits and protection. It was PARTLY due to this that they were able to cut off so much territory with the Trianon peace decree, as there were so many (millions) different nationalities living in the country. In other words, the repopulation was a slow, peaceful occupation of territory, which meant that 68% of the country was lost in 1920.
It is absolutely irrelevant what you wrote. The similiarity to Turkish is not stemming from the Ottoman occupation but goes back a good 1000 years before that. First of all the words we share with Turkish are from the Chuvash Turkish spoken aournd the Volga back then and not the Oghuz urkish spoken in today Turkey and what was spoken by the Ottoman Turks.

Diphthongs were much more common in Hungarian back then. Village people still use diphthongs and that's why it sounds weird.

Ez csak a "hivatalos" tudomány szerint az első magyar írott nyelvemlék. Sokkal régebbiek is vannak, csak rovásírással. Vagyis úgy pontos, hogy ez az első latin betűvel íródott magyar nyelvemlék. Szerintem.

Old hungarian sounded closer to finnish than modern day hungarian, most probably because the languages were closer at that time, and did not develop some of the modern phonetic characteristics that differentiate them more nowadays. Nice video, Andy!
hungarian and finnish language divided about 10.000 years ago. almost nothing common.
Old finnish also sounded different, more like saami, mari, etc.

There are words what are so different that I wouldn't understand it by hearing. Some other words sounds like a strange dialect.
