  • Calgary Flames' goalie Miikka Kiprusoff showing off a couple of drills from his morning game-day skate, with the Flames' 2010 coach, the infamous Jamie "Noodles" McLennan, before the Battle of Alberta on 30 Jan. 2010.
The first drill is a simple post-to-post and out to a point-shot. The second (at #t=0m26s) is a drill against low-angle shots to the five-hole, in which Kipper shows off a powerful reactive VH (vertical-horizontal) aka "split-knee," "post load," or "post-leg up" position. He ably illustrates that the VH is not merely a static blocking position, but, like the butterfly a save selection with specific uses.
Notice that when he uses the VH instead of a compact butterfly, he gains three advantages: (1) he has his short-side skate-blade engaged with the ice, loaded to push out to the top of the crease or across the goal as necessary, and (2) he's filling the short-side vertical angle better, and (3) the rebounds are very well controlled, not popping out into the slot; if one did pop out, he's ready to slide out with it.
