In May of 1989, the Tangshan Locomotive & Rolling Stock Company in China completed the construction of SY 1647M ("M" represents the Chinese word "Meiguo" which translates to "America"). SY 1647M was built for the Valley Railroad in Essex, Connecticut and shortly ran under their ownership. Shortly after, Walter G. Rich, owner of the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway at the time, purchased this locomotive from the Valley Railroad for use as an excursion engine along his system. The engine, renumbered to 142, ran for 15 years under ownership of the NYS&W until 2004, when it was sold to the NYS&W T&HS. Since then, the beautiful mikado has called the Belvidere & Delaware River Railway home. A few times in the early years of operation under the NYS&W T&HS, 142 wore a daunting "all-black" paint scheme and was lettered as a locomotive of the "Belvidere & Delaware". It is now 2014, and the locomotive is "back in black" for the season! On June 6th, the locomotive was given her first fire in her belly since the 2013 steam excursion season ended. The next day, she began service again for her 2014 season. Throughout the month of May, as a volunteer, I was able to watch as the Society helped to bring this engine back to life. This special video covers the first weekend of steam on this former-Pennsylvania Railroad branch in 2014, and it is exclusively brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on both June 7th and June 8th 2014.
Please note, I am a volunteer of the New York Susquehanna & Western T&HS, and I had permission to film in some of these locations. I urge you to please not trespass along the railroad property.
Welcome back 142. Hats off to the volunteer workers of Bel-Del.
She has to be the prettiest Mikado I've ever seen! She's pretty fast two! She looks great both as New Haven and Susquehanna!
i don't know what it cost to ship here from china...but it was well worth it thanks for the video...i am too a volunteer for the colebrookdale historical railroad...a lot of hard work, but i love the fact they we can bring these things back to life....
Excellent video! Im glad to see that the 142 is running! I'll have to get up there and see it one of these days.
Awesome vid chad you caught me blowing that air whistle on back of car 531 lol. =)
I rode behind this engine in 1991 when she was still on the cvry as 1647. It was a Christmas train and I was 4 at the time; Santa and Mrs. Claus were on board and I told Santa I wanted a train for Christmas.
i miss the old whistle. :(
love this loco!
Great video man!
142: yes I'm back in black!
too bad she didn't retain her original high-pitched 5 chime, I loved that whistle.
John McCardell you can actually buy a Chinese 5 Chime for relatively cheap, around $500.00
It is a chinese steam engine but the Susquehanna ordered 1698M. That 1698M sank in the Bay of Bengal during the Gulf War since the freighter was taking on water heavily. The 1698M's final destination was Syracuse, New York.
Now that I have my driver's license and my own ride, I have every intention of getting up there one of these days.
Thanks!
Nice video! What time did you arrive to see the morning preparations?
What happened to 142 now?
I have a railroad spike from Tangshan China the sy class steam locomotives used it the stamp SY X
While I'm not a big fan of Chinese locomotive in American version, your video is well filmed. I still like both US and Chinese designs! I hope that this SY locomotive can have a combination Chinese and American livery to mix up!
Built in the (sorry for incorrect spelling) tanshan locomotive works in China it’s a American design from the 1940’s
Where is there a website for schedule for excursions?
I wonder what's the status in 142's overhaul? It possible she may be running again by the end of 2020?????
I’m from Syracuse and I want this engine back
Back where?
Blue Comet Productions in syracuse
But why? What good would that do when it has a secure operating future operating on the Bel-Del?
Blue Comet Productions I just think it’s sad that Syracuse has no steam engine left! It has a giant history with NYC routes!
@@the_gp9_802 but nowhere to run it
2:42 Boston & Maine 6 chime?
Imagine if there was a movie called Attack of the Mikados which featured 142 4960 4501 3025 and others!!!
Bruce Tharpe I would see that! ( 2-8-2 is my favorite wheel arrangement out of all locomotives, for me there a nice medium sized locomotive. )
What psi does 142 pop at? And btw, if you guys ever wanna change out the whistle just for kicks I have a killer B&M 6 chime remake in perfect condition!
she pops off at 200 psi, I believe.
could you hook is up to a item with steam or air so we can hear
I don't work for the railroad, so I cannot help you there. sorry.
Engineer5344 i was not asking you the one with the wistle
CONNECTICUTLEGORAILROADFILMS if you check my page and videos, there are some that have a sound sample with my 6 chime mounted on a 1921 Grand Trunk Western 0-6-0 steam engine up in NH.
I am pretty sure this is the real life basis for No. 72 in NGH 2.5 on Roblox
6:32 what it's that, an emergency whistle?
No, that was the air whistle from the back of the train. It’s normally used when the train approaches a crossing in reverse.
@@T128Productions oh, thank you!
Funny how they use a diesel. That diesel's probably older than the steam engine!
How did they get this engine working so quick
It was only an annual inspection. Happens every year.
I prefer the Chinese locomotives with black and red livery
William Ou Me too
Including the whistle! There are still a few SYs pulling passenger coaches, working at the steelworks, and delivering coal in China today. One SY class is in South Korea
While I'm not a big fan of Chinese locomotive in American version, your video is well filmed. I still like both US and Chinese designs! I hope that this SY locomotive can have a combination Chinese and American livery to mix up!
I hope they paint out the white stripe on the tender so it is all black.
what stripe?
there is a small white strip it looks like along the bottom of the frame of the tender, unless its just sun glare. And i forgot to say in the last comment, great video!!!
it is a glare, and thank you!
