I love how Samson isn't actually evil or anything. He's just intimidating. And he still just tries to transport the passengers as quickly as possible and gets scared for his life when the bridge breaks. Lovely piece of animation!
I know right. While yes he is like a foil or rival to Linus, he isn't a villain. Just cause a character is a rival or foil doesn't make them automatically mean they are a villain or bad guy unless they do something that says otherwise. But like you said he doesn't do anything that would make him a bad guy or villain, as just because a character is intimidating doesn't mean they're a villain or bad guy.

I really like how there is no real villain to this story, Samson was just doing his job and didn’t do anything wrong and the Baron was just a man of progress, if you read the newspaper, the baron even redirected funds from his own business to the rebuilding of Linus! Bravo!
I’d say the real villain was the guy with the whip. He enjoyed doing it a bit too much
You identified a redeemed villain, but he was still a villain nonetheless. That dark part of the story with the Baron/Samson was crucial for creating tension and unease.

It is Disney's 100 year anniversary and they came up with nothing new, but YOU and your team brought something astounding to the table! Well done!
To their credit, they did roll out a nicely animated short, but I have to agree that this is one of the greatest animated shorts I've ever seen, and, as of the moment I'm writing this, I'm not even finished watching it yet!
@@sericsmith5770 Nah. Disney's short was pretty poorly animated, with a message/story that came across as artificial. There were only a few characters and scenes that were well animated, but it was mostly thanks to animation vets like Eric Goldberg and James Baxter. Since Disney got rid of their 2D animation department years ago, they had to outsource to other studios who are clearly less experienced. But this short however, was very well made. I love how the businessman and Samson aren't big bad villains. The businessman genuinely wants progress and to make the conductor's life easier, it would've been so easy to make him the money-hungry heartless bad-guy. Wonderful job!
Judging by the fact the businessman can enjoy tea with a lower class, there's certainly some good in him.
Stuff like this is nice for a change when it comes to story telling.
small track railroads were a weird mix of companies that were legitimately in the business of making people's lives better (or even just possible, they were a MASSIVE part of mining and logging) and straight up horror stories made reality, usually in the form of company towns...which were also a massive part of mining and logging.
to sum up what "company town" means if you are unfamiliar: think of a completely isolated population in a remote area in a settlement created for the express purpose of being cut off and kept under a literal total monopoly by a small group controlling transport, think about it for a bit, got an idea of how bad that can get? okay, good, now make everything compounding-in-on-itself _worse_ by it somehow being legal to pay people in tender that is nonexchangeable and only accepted by the company in question _and_ legal to claim debts in that tender equate to debts in legal tender despite exchange of tender being impossible so once they are in they can't even drop literally everything and hike their family through a couple hundred miles of wilderness to get out. they had a literally captive workforce that they legally could and regularly _did_ do things to which were banned in both custom and law to do to slaves because slaves still had to be a transferable commodity.
@@ching-jungyang62 omg that's actually a pretty good point.
At first i was grudging about why the money man that actually brings economy easing the life of the lower class and maintaining their jobs without an unhealthy relationship with "unanimated objects" was portrayed as the bad guy because "big gray with cigarette" but the tea scene is an actual decision made from the storyboard.
im too used to black-white portrayals on classic animations it seems.
The only mistake the guy made was not improving the infrastructure (the bridge) when he intended to bring in the bigger and heavier engine

This level of 2d animation is what Disney WISHES they could return to HOLY CRAP IT’S SO AMAZING
Ha! I see the pun there, the upcoming movie "WISH" :P
@@WillowHeartzI’m not trying to be rude, but I don’t think the pun was implied…
OH they totally could, if the directors were left to their own devices. 2d is much cheaper than 3d, so it's not like they couldn't take more risks with it...
@@elephantmarchisn’t that the other way around? 3d is cheaper than 2d
@@TheRecklessBravery No, common misconception. Many think because even high end 3d has so many "automated" parts it's cheaper or easier, but it takes just as much work to and time to make 3d animation look good as 2d, even if the specifically challenging areas are different. THEN you have to add how much more rendering power it takes, and you need rigging artist and modelers and FX simulators in far greater number then with 2d.
Now, BAD or cheap 3d animation can be inexpensive of course if you use stock and reuse to pay less people... BUT the 2d equivalent of that would be cheap Flash or other 3d puppet style animation, which would still be cheaper.
The last 2d high end Disney fiilm, Princess and the Frog, cost half as much as their last 3d one to make. It's just b/c 3d was getting people into theatres that they stopped doing 2d
The Brave Locomotive deserves its own film because the animation is so sublime. It has everything it takes to be a masterpiece. Well done.

Other newer trains would probably doubt Linus, but Samson pitches in with "Don't judge him, that little locomotive saved my life."
It looks like he was preserved as a historical ride: people riding on the older track and get to experience some history.
I think it's more meant to be the 40s, present-day when the film hypothetically would have been "made" with the style
Still could be the case, but it wouldn't be AS historic persay
One interesting detail I also just noticed, in this scene one of the passengers is reading a book titled "Trains of Yester Year"
Samson is fr a chad.

Congratulations to you and everyone who worked on this! ❤️
I love how Baron and his daughter aren’t actually evil despite looking like they might be the antagonists. Baron’s a business man who sees Samson as the next big thing and thinks Linus’s best days are behind him, but if you read the newspaper at the end it tells how he managed to redirect funds from a memorial for Linus to restoring him
And his daughter despite being named the railroad princess isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and helped Henry fill Linus to make him stronger. And she even helped repair him afterwards.
It’s more interesting than them just being evil business tycoons like you often see in media
I interpreted it as the baron's daughter stepping in to help while the baron is too afraid, and the baron would have happily let Linus go to scrap, but had a change of heart because Linus saved his life.
So I'd say they portray the baron as mostly antagonistic until he was rescued and the baron's daughter is portrayed in a more positive light because she stepped up when crisis happened.
@@bebibroly5 I mean in his song Baron doesn’t say he wants to scrap Linus, he just said he must “give way” then Linus is reassigned to the mountain

This video just reopened my child hood. Now I like steam trains a lot more now.
8 years? They still take this long? I though modern technology could do this quite faster.
Wait, this was in production for 8 years?!
I think one of the more interesting aspects of this is that Samson really is an objectively better engine. He only "fails" because the bridge he was crossing wasn't really meant to carry engines of his size, and at the end of the film you can see a more modern train passing by carrying an enormous amount of passengers, meaning that the baron was right when he called Samson "the future" of the train industry. Even still, Linus and Henry are still around doing their thing, even if they did get replaced in terms of utility they don't disappear completely and people still enjoy their service. I think it's a good message that change doesn't necessarily mean the destruction of the old; old things will still be around, even if it's only for our enjoyment.
It's a shame that this can only be done in cartoons. And cars that have served their useful life rust on the street or for a long time in a scrap metal dump.
Objectively, Samson was a guy who was really, really good at his job. And so good, that he did things so fast (according to the newspaper.) that the bridge was rushed because y'know, Samson brought things to-and-fro so fast. So it IS acknowledge Samson is the better engine in this video.

Holy cow, didn’t expect to see you of all people here.
I watched this amazing video when it came to CZcams after 30 minutes and I was blown away but the art style. Really brings back childhood memories
Cheers to all who worked on this.Outstanding work.
It is absolutely mindblowing that you tackled the feel of the 1940-1950s! A pure work of art. And that's speaking so much from a train enthusiast like me! Great job, Andrew!
Indeed

I really like how expressive the characters are. Even with barely any actual speech from the characters, you can still very much tell what’s going on. Very cool!
Agreed.

The designs of all the characters are spectacular
That animation reminds me of the old cartoons. I love it. A lot of personalities.
Linus is what you Call: responsible, respectful, will give up anything to save other and hard worker
Samson Is what you call: Non boastfull, hard worker determined
Absolutely amazing work I love the Animation as well.
Yeah, Samson doesn't even try to threaten, Linus. He glanced at him and left it that. Yeah, he's big, strong, intimidating as heck, but he's also a hard worker who minds his own business
*responsible reliable and really useful
The fact that somebody wrote all those articles for the two papers when most people won't even notice them is astonishing. The level of attention to detail here is incredible. Mad respect to everyone who worked on this lovely animation!
Right? I love pausing and reading them; especially because sometimes there's some silly nonsense in there as an Easter egg
right it wasn't the normal bla bla paper no one reads this text.
What an absolute splendor! Bravo to all of the artists who worked tirelessly and passionately on this cartoon! This deserves an Oscar nomination!
I love how the animation style is a more modern version of those old 1920s cartoons, this was an absolute gem to watch! Congratulations to everyone who worked on this animation!
A quality cartoon with no BS or cheap animation??? Disney may be dying, but their spirit lives on in others! This is awesome!
and no woke agenda on it

I love the detail in the second newspaper that Samson took on long-haul freight to help pay for the damages after the bridge collapsed. He feels like he was just big and intimidating, no bad intentions. I love this so much, worth second of those eight years!
My artistic abilities far outweigh yours it is insulting to see you overlook them
@@Jen-hen What?
Where on the paper does it say that? I checked it and couldn't find the headline.
@@thevoyagingcreator 5:55 the headline under the words "who has friends" titled "samson reassigned to lumber haul" is the closest i could find. the rest of the wording is too small for me to read personally.
@@megasora4 I can read them in 1080p. I copied out the relevant part of the newspaper:
*Samson Reassigned to Lumber Haul*
"Some overhauling will be in order to ensure this kind of recklessness never happens again." Baron von Kapital assured the press.
Samson, grateful for his rescue by the brave locomotive Linus, is said to be taking on long distance freight routes to compensate for the tremendous material loss of the bridge her played a role in disabling.
Samsons design is outstanding to me. It’s really how a North American locomotive from the 1940’s should look like, Love how he has a automatic stoker like those big locomotives like the Union Pacific Big Boys had, not to mention his valve gear and wheel arrangement is accurate, Grand Job.
This is an absolute masterpiece! It looks and feels like a classic Disney cartoon. It’s something which I think Walt Disney himself would be very proud of.
Except Walt's kinda an asshole.

That’s exactly what I thought! Specifically, I was thinking that it reminds me of the classic Disney cartoon about Little Toot the tugboat.
This was great. I really felt the Engineer's pain--even when it doesn't literally have a soul, it's hard to let go of a trusty, reliable machine that's always pulled through for you.

As someone who has loved trains forever this film was super heartwarming and generally a joy to watch.
This is my favourite short film. I love Samson and Linus and I hope to see them again in the future.
Now *THIS* is a gorgeous love letter to the old time cartoons we 'veterans' grew up with. Such a wonderful animation. The songs & music were great, too.
As a lifelong fan of trains and train media such as Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, the Little Engine That Could, and the Polar Express and of classic Disney animation, I've been highly anticipating this short for ages and it did NOT disappoint! Wonderful work, Mr. Chesworth. You and your crew should be very proud of what you've accomplished here. Absolutely phenomenal work all around.
It's kinda funny that both the Railway Series and this masterpiece of a short associate with the name Henry.
