- Did you know that in 1917... George MacKay is not supposed to run into two soldiers and fall -- it's a complete accident. They keep rolling because each take is so expensive to film.

Curiously, it is one of my favorite scenes in that movie, there you can see the desperation and need that the character has to fulfill his mission.
I remember just absolutely loving this movie i have to watch it again

Those 2 guys who got hit were probably so pumped! They went from extras to interacting with the main character!
Probably did it on purpose, if you've ever seen extras in action, you'll understand. Lots of them get kicked off set for being too "extra".
@@BrazyUK yeah I've seen that video clip that says exactly that.
@@BrazyUKbo they didnt do it on purpose, and no, extras dont get kicked off a set until it becomes a problem, if theyre doing too much they usually get told to wind down a bit and redo the scene. This was an accident.
@@R-E-V-E-R-Band colliding into the main character isn't problematic 😂

How did they loop those frames so perfectly? 🤯
This whole movie is a bunch of really long takes, it's super impressive and immersive
There's a cut in this short where it jumps to an earlier point, you don't notice it because you're focusing on a different element.
@@psoma_brufdalso cuts where they go into dark places
The scene's cut/beginning is at "George..." - it is edited to have it seemingly continue after the end of the short into the beginning of the next loop of the short creating this efffect.
If by "they" you mean Allen
It’s amazing how many shots in movies were happy accidents and just they made the correct decision to keep it in.
I love it when the narrative can read the script off to the side and engage the audience at the same damn time.
😂
Still to this day. I don't remember a single cut from this movie, it was like a full movie with live environments, such a masterpiece
@@christianreza144there’s a lot more cuts than that. They just cleverly hid most of them.

I feel like it made the scene so much better and increased the tension of the moment
This is what makes the scene so amazing. That suspense you felt due to the situation and the entire plot of the film makes this a classic.
I think it worked out well for the film, I thought it was intentional. It seems like it fits the film well
They had to know running into someone might happen. And planning it
@@amt4653I heard a long time ago that they kept this scene because it looked more realistic but it wasn’t planned. I’m sure it was expensive but I heard they kept it because of the realism not the cost

And that’s the scene that made me cry because of how hard he was trying to help
To be honest I think that this makes it even more believable. And shows you how chaotic war can be.
It actually looks more realistic too. Plus how fast he gets back up each time.
And I’m sure you’re not supposed to be teleporting around the city, but each take is pretty expensive.
Great work to those extras for immediately disappearing off-frame to not mess up the shot or draw attention away from the subject.
Because George does NOT learn from his mistakes...

I think, while it was not intended, it was expected. That's why director have said "Continue running no matter what"
He can film two videos at the same time.
As long as the script is matching…
"Did you know, if you fall back in your chair, you will fall"
Honestly, his falls and recovery make the scene better. His fast recoveies show how determined he is

But just makes it soooo much better!
This film is perfect example of a well done film no crazy story, no super powers just a well done movie. First day I watched i rewatched the same evening and enjoyed just as much.
The way they shot this movie is cinema gold. Watching the behind the scenes is worth it.. so much respect to these film makers. Having only a few cuts (and those were transitioned flawlessly) makes you feel as if you're part of the movie😊
He can read the script and the camera at the sane time

I like how the soilders he just bumped into lay there like there dead 🤣
No he actually got hurt he pushed his neck back and his lung ran into a whole shoulder knocking the wind out

And yet it gives the entire film the fascinating and fantastic realism it deserves
Bro mastered the art of teleportation

This man's reactions always seem so genuine; I love these shorts!
I’m guessing those guns still had the old spears on the gun, he actually came so close on the second hit to impaling himself and making the movie that much more real lol
Nah. They knew it was very likely he would collide with at least one person.

This could’ve been really dangerous if they had real bayonets on their guns

I was not expecting that Doberman to be that hilarious
What's really amazing about this scene is that the director only gave him one action, keep running until we cut no matter what. That's why he runs into the two extras, he was just suppose to keep running! 😊 Amazing how quickly he recovers to keep going!
In fact, it is not entirely what you say, they will not record it again, not because of budget issues, but because since it was an improvised performance, it was so natural that the director liked it so much that he left it for the film.
I love how the extra he bumps into is clearly to scared to get back up 😂
I especially love how quickly the actor rolled back to stand up again
Nobody gonna talk about how clean that loop is?
The idea of making it a one shot film makes it a piece of art
I'm not even kidding you. I think this might be my favorite shot in film
the camera tracked very well for an unplanned shot
yeah i'm pretty sure this "fact" isn't real
Can we appreciate that the camera operators basically shot it on the fly after the mistakes and adapted the angles perfectly.
His unhinged laugh in the end is pure gold
Any mistake in art is a design 👌
Bro teleported while casually telling us about a movie
Im sure it was expensive but lets not downplay how much this added to the scene’s believability and realness
Not because it was to expensive but because it added more realism to scene. This happens alot in films where accidents happen and they improve and it ends up making some scenes alot better!
It gave the scene more gravity and made it feel more real, if you ask me.
That's not why they kept rolling. They kept rolling because it added realism to the scene.
Without knowing the details of what went into the making of 1917 i felt something special about this movie . A masterpiece
I was surprised when I first heard that they wanted to reshoot these scenes when unplanned “friendly fire” is absolutely something that would happen when an army of boys drafted to run into a field of death would absolutely be chaotic enough to have this effect.
The fact they got film of that quality 107 years ago is insane
imagine the soldiers stopped running just because he bumped into one of them
Correct. He was supposed to be bayonetted by the first guy. Whole remainder of the movie was improvised. Great addition to the bits-of-movies-improvised roster.
Honestly, it is weird that they didn't think someone should fall in that situation.
“Mr. President, George has hit a second soldier”
A slight correction sir, the whole movie was made in just one take, the only time they cut for a brake it was after he was knocked out on the stairs but other than that the camera kept rolling non stop. They even announced it when the movie has been released.
That’s the joke smart guy
Imagine that last guy he ran into was just pointing his bayonet a little more to the right
That was in the secret script
It said run into 2 guys (Ron & Fred) then get back up continue to run
The budget for the movie 95M
Meaning every minute cost 790K
Meaning this scene cost 1.58 million dollars for 2 minutes. For guys running in a field, with edited explosions.
Hollywood has to be laundering money or something bro.
I love this movie. This part is such a tear-jerker for me
Him clashing obviously makes it more realistic as your running a 90 degree angle to a charging regiment.
Your confidence is contagious.
idk if it was complete accident, i feel like if he managed to casually zip through a whole army not even running into a single soldier it would’ve seemed a little bit unrealistic.
It would make more sense considering he is running horizontal to the rest of the battle that he’d be bound to run into someone
He’s supposed to run straight while not being able to retake. What a genius plan.
It's quite nice because it shows him interacting with the environment around him
Assuming the presenter is not a resident of Scotland this is the first time anyone I’ve seen from another country, including England, has ever pronounced Mackay properly, well done sir 👏🏼
It makes it more realistic- if you were running for you life across uneven ground with loads of other men running towards you from a different direction, you would either fall from the uneven ground, or get hit by someone and fall over!
That accident completely made that scene!! The desperation felt so real!!
May have been an accident, but it added to the situation and fit perfectly within the scene
I would like to compliment you on your diligence.
It’s not due to each tape being expensive to film. It’s due to the whole film being one continuous film.
Actually makes the scene more realistic. War is hell. The victor is the side that is best trained and equipped to control the chaos.
