  • What's one ILM project Adam didn't work on but wish he had? Was ILM Adam's dream job? Were there makers that influenced Adam's design approaches? And would 3D printing have been a game changer? In this excerpt from our Dec. 22 live stream, Adam answers questions from Tested Patrons Brandon Greene, Paxton Sparks, Christopher Amrich and Tommy Stevens, whom we thank for their support! Huh, I like how he describes the change to his dream job by saying "tomorrow I get to..."

      Yeah, I'm an engineer and I don't think I've ever had that experience, I was close once, but never quite there. I am, however, close to retirement, with an infinitely long list of things I want to do, so "tomorrow I get to" will be here soon.

      While I want to be able to say this (and mean it with Adam's kid-like giddy) I feel like I need to just start saying it now (whether I mean it or not).
      I'm thinking this might help change my perspective about my current, seemingly unappreciated job.
      ie. "Tomorrow (or today) I get to work with some pretty amazing people" or "I get to practice this today."

    • @MattWeber
      @MattWeber Před 3 lety +1

      @@brevs8387 It really will. Creating the feeling in what your doing, with even the small things you enjoy, can drastically change your perspective and mood. Its something many motivational teachers will teach as well. If it takes no effort to do, why wait for tomorrow? Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

    Normalize dream jobs being a stepping stone to things that you couldn't even conceive of before then! They don't necessarily need to be the be-all, end-all job you do forever.

    • @thegrafxguy1
      @thegrafxguy1 Před 3 lety +2

      i think for Adam the dream job is actually just being a creator/maker. he's happy as long as he gets to make things, all the studios and gigs were just stepping stones of being a maker. and in his case a world-famous one at this point.
      i work in the video game industry as an artist and have for the last 11 years. working in games is my dream job, the individual gigs and contracts here and there were not necessarily stepping stones but a path that has kept me in this industry and enjoying it for over a decade. i've had a handful of different titles over time but as long as i'm in the gaming industry i'm happy.

    I feel exactly the same way about my career progression. In the 5th grade (1999ish) I wrote in a grammar class essay that I wanted to "design cars on a computer"..... Fast forward to college and I didn't really have a major chosen but I fit the aptitude test for engineering, aside from disliking math... I graduated and didn't have a job lined up so I applied to places and after a couple months a long-time friend and neighbor said there was an engineering opening where he worked... They design, fabricate, and install large conveyor systems for automobile plants. So there I was staring at concept and future vehicles trying to find ways to build them in the current car plants. After a few years I was even able to negotiate changes to the future car structure to make it more manufacturable....Literally "designing cars on a computer" in a very small way (compared to the actual vehicle design engineers)... But the auto industry is crazy, high stress, high workload, tight scheduling, tight budgeting. And I was spending at least one weekend a month on some jobsite, often times out of the country. I worked nearly every holiday and after 7 years I was getting tired of not the work... but everything else, I didn't like the city or apartment living and was ready to find 'home' and settle down... So I was able to line up a position at another friend's company in designing and project mgt in the aircraft, spacecraft, and public transportation industry.... for the last few weeks I've been working on a project with NASA and the USN....... it's been quite a ride, and hopefully I have another 30 years to go before retirement.

    All in The Family: Carol O'Conner as Archie Bunker. My mother was HORRIFIED that I would watch this with my grandfather in the 70's....yet it was genius for his commentary on the social fabric of America. Now, I am a seasoned international airline captain. One of the BEST pieces of advice I provide to new copilots comes from my mother: the Pilot in Command YOU become will be formed by the captains you fly with: absorb the good and learn what not to do from the bad. Be the best you can be. I am the captain I am having used that wisdom, for I will fly the aircraft EVERY TIME as if MY OWN family were in the back and I am going to protect them.
    Mr. Savage: I am the maker I am in my off hours from having watched and absorbed your experience and wisdom. Thank you for sharing.

    To everyone who thinks that 3D-printing for Cosplay is "cheating" I can tell you that it's certainly not! You have no idea how much work actually goes into doing 3D-printing for cosplay: 3D-modelling, printing, assembly (because you really can't make very large prints in one go), surface treatment (oh god, the sanding!), painting etc. It's just a different process with its own pros and cons, just like any other making process.

I survived for years with just a 4x4 area growing weed. And had more money back then and I work a good 40 hour a week job. It's amazing how much money you can make growing weed if you know what your doing and can grow good weed. Growing weed is easy, growing good weed consistently is hard.

    Friends of mine worked at Rick Baker's Cinovation back in the day and it was a shop where many of the workers were actual employees with benefits. I believe Stan Winston's shop at the time was similar. It is a shame that the practical effects industry has been pushed to the point where everyone must be a gig worker. Sit down group discussion just talking about all the stuff. I learned a lot as a kid by breaking things, and not intentionally breaking things mind you. I learned just as much by listening to the discussions my dad had with his friends.

      @@TylerWitucki Industrial Light and Magic. It's a film production/special effects company purpose-created for the Star Wars films by George Lucas. It is now pretty much _the_ top special effects company in the world with literally hundreds of credits to its name, especially in the genre of sci-fi. If there's a sci-fi film made since 1980ish, that had significant special effects in it, it's probably ILM.

    Some people make all the luck, the rest of us are asking "how do you make your own luck"? Cryptic answers will be meat with blank stairs, non-cryptic answers will be appreciated.

    Finally found something that I disagree with Adam on. 3D printing in cosplay. It's not only about the end result. Appreciation must be given to the amount of work, time, love, and effort that went into a costume. If there are two cosplayers wearing identical suits (or are using the same prop), one is hand crafted from the ground up while the other pressed a button on a printer, they are not the same and never should be. These are the things that turn so many people away from the hobby, because they can put insane amounts of work into something and be completely ignored by something machine made or by someone who is wearing a bikini and calling it a cosplay.

      i'm not that close to the cosplay scene, but my impression when i've interacted with it is that there's a sort of soft upper limit on how things look imposed by the easy material choices available. and that applies to 3d printing too. my impression is that 3d printing could create a reason for people to push beyond that soft limit. like, a 3d print will always be a little chunky, a little fragile, a little heavy, a little hard to paint, you won't get glass transparency out of it or a true fabric. and those places may be able to form an opportunity for others to differentiate themselves. 3d printing is well suited to recreating a character that's never been depicted realistically enough to demand real materials. but that's something i've always found disappointing, sort of a garbage in garbage out thing. i made chainmail for a while, and even the prop plastic mail that weta made for lord of the rings won't look the same up close, no matter the paintjob. nobody's figured out how to get a machine to make real armor-grade chainmail hauberks, and so seeing one is a clear indication that someone put hundreds or thousands of hours into something. that was a little stream of consciousness, does that make sense?

      I don't appreciate how much time or effort they spent, the end result is garbage and fake. 3D printing is putting real effort engineering, u engineer cardboard and cotton.
