If I remember correctly the uk version was strange as it was the mythbusters team speaking in their American voice and the narrator speaking in a British voice, and that did not sound right at all.
I think we did get some all American voices sometimes but the all American voices sounded better then the British version.
Love from the uk, and still watching mythbusters to this day.
First few episodes was 30 minutes then they gave us the full USA show. But the guy who did the narration, was the same guy who did a lot of Discovery shows! He was really good and gave a lot of information about what was happening.
I would have to say my favorite moment of his on Mythbusters would be his reaction to Adam saying this:

I can't *BELIEVE* that Duck Dynasty won & Mythbusters didn't. For me *THAT* was the one that was the worst of the lot. When it came to years the Mythbusters didn't get the Emmy.
It would be really cool if you got Rob to narrate an episode of One Day Builds.

Just looked up who they lost to each year...just...wow...I can't...like what? Terrible that Mythbusters lost to most of those shows.
I was genuinely surprised by that.
I just had to check out who were they competing against and this fact has become more appalling. Those winners weren´t even close to the quality what the Mythbusters had.
It just proves for the thousandth time how meaningless those awards are.
In high school I was on the student news program. For the intro to each episode we parodied a TV show or movie intro. After reaching out to Robert Lee, he graciously recorded us a personally narrated Mythbusters-style intro for our tiny school program out of the goodness of his heart. Super cool guy!

As someone from the UK that grew up watching Mythbusters... while we had a different narrator, for me he was equally as Iconic and important to the experience of the show as I expect Rob Lee was to US viewers. It was just the sound of Mythbusters for us!
It's weird watching them on Netflix with Rob Lee rather than our guy.
Right there with you. I think Rob Lee is alright but I feel like he just isn’t quite sarcastic enough, I miss the UK guy.
The UK narrator was fantastic IMO, he also did How It’s Made so clearly he didn’t mind reading an awful pun! The US narrator doesn’t sound right to me good as he is 😂
I prefer our UK narrator too. The American is fine, but I just prefer ours.

The US guy was too enthusiastic and over the top for my liking.
It show how different us and UK culture is, and how much enthusiasm and tone needs to be translated for different audiences. Even those speaking the same language
You absolutely nailed why Rob Lee was such a wonderfully integral part of the show. He truly "got it", and you could hear in his voice that not only did he get it, but he knew the audience and crew also got it too... and we were all sharing all these inside jokes as part of the Mythbuster experience... truly a community... and that always feels great.
When someone cares, it shows. This was one of the many problems i had with dreamworks Lorax, they tried hard, but they didn’t CARE.

It takes some skill, talent, and intelligence to truly understand the material you are working on artistically. To know its niche and how to fulfill that. Rob Lee/Mythbusters seemed to do that quite well, mixing humor, science-ish, and a few people genuinely having fun and exploring the world together.
Whenever he just looks off into the distance and then smiles when he comes upon a fond memory of his is just so genuine

It genuinely astounds me that MythBusters has never won an Emmy. I would argue that it is without a doubt the greatest work of science communication ever conceived. Perhaps not the greatest work of science ever televised, but that is in part the reason why it would be the greatest work of science communication. It is specifically focused on everyday occurrences, it taps into the sensationalist part with danger, explosions and approaching the boundaries of human capability and in the process of all that, you learn something. It is science, pure and in its applied and everyday form, in a way that makes you wanna watch it. That's what science communication is all about.
Mythbusters was just perfect TV. Everything about it popped, and it was a fresh, new concept from the drawing board forward. The production team basically invented everything they did. If that's not award-worthy, then the awards system is broken.
I had to take Intro Physics in college. I’m terrible at science and math. Mythbusters helped me understand principles of physics. I barely passed, but I still have a basic understanding of it. That’s all because of the show.
Rob was as much a character on your show as any of the hosts. His voice was distinct and amazing.

@@itwasagoodideaatthetime7980 I didn’t find that. Mythbusters was noninated for “Outstanding Structured Reality Program” years 2009-2016. It looks like the winners were Intervention, Undercover Boss, and Shark Tank.

Man you can literally ask Adam whatever question. It doesn't even matter if he answers it or goes on a huge tangent, you're guaranteed a good story!

Rob Lee was one of the most fun TV narrators I've ever heard. He injected so much humor and candor into the show, and was the narrative glue that held together the story of each episode.
The thing I like about Adam is that you ask him a question and you can hear a smile in his voice as he's answering it. His enthusiasm is so genuine and so infectious.

I just wonder if the narrator ever got tired of reading the lines "hunker in the bunker" or "slip into something less comfortable" since I feel like those lines were used in *every* episode with an explosion or silly outfit, respectively. XD

Regarding silly outfits I remember Jamie dressed as Luke Skywalker, one of the most hilarious yet cool moments ever! I don't remember for sure, but Adam might have been injured at the time so Jamie had to step up to the plate and become Luke. His look of bashfulness when actress Sophia Bush (as Leia) spoke to him was priceless.
As I live in Chile, I always watched a dubbed version of Mythbusters. I was surprised when I decided to watch it in English and finally heard your actual voices. One thing, the latin narrator (Victor Covarrubias) did an amazing work translating the irony and snark of the original narrator !
The funny thing about the Shirley Eaton myth is that it implies that she at least died at some point before the release of Goldfinger, but she is still alive today.
There's literally footage in that episode of her being interviewed about it haha
Theres photos of her and she actually wasnt even fully painted as they genuinely feared her dying from skin suffocation

I remember watching the spanish dubbed version when I was younger, and when I heard the original audio it blew my mind that they actually got a dubber with almost the exact same voice, and yeah, Rob's voice is indeed iconic.

His voice was GOLDEN. I remember our family talking about the puns as we watched the show, and our general consensus was/is… it’s all but impossible probably to read a pun, especially when you’re not seen and it’s only your voice, without including an air of ‘I get this & I know you do too’, without sounding like a complete fool.
We had our own British narrator in the UK--and honestly, his laconic delivery was as iconic to my Myhtbusters experience as Rob's is to yours! MB on Prime has the original US narrator, and it took some getting used to. I don't remember MB being a half-hour long, ever, but I could be mistaken.

Perhaps at first - but later seasons were just as long as the American versions - I'm British too - I didn't even hear the American guy until years later. Amazing voice! but our guy needs some love too - he was there for a looooong time

I am from England and I must say I enjoyed the narration here. I haven't seen many of the Rob narrated episodes. The CZcams clips sound "odd" 🤣

I can't even imagine MythBusters without Rob Lee's narration. To me he's as important as any of the cast, absolutely critical to the whole feel of the show.
I think the other thing that really helped with the narrator is that it always felt like he was having fun too. I was genuinely surprised when you said he was in Australia, because I always kind of imagined him being around, just off camera. Obviously, he was still part of the show even in a different location, but the way he narrated it you always felt like he was there on site just out of frame, amused by all the shenanigans.
Yeah, Rob did a great job with the narration. On a similar note: Some background stories about the graphics artist, who did all the amazing illustrations of experiment setups, subject title screens, etc. would be nice.

yes, but the character supposedly died from 'skin suffocation', and the myth I believe included the idea that there had been some sort of health effects from being painted head to toe in reality on the set that supposedly alarmed the production.

@@Vladimir_Kv His story was different. The original tin man, Buddy Ebsen, they used aluminum powder to make him metal which he ended up inhaling and it coated his lungs and made him very sick. The tin man who ended up in the movie was Jack Haley and they switched his makeup to a safer aluminum paste.

YES! I live in the UK and grew up with Mythbusters and it was indeed voiced by someone else who had a distinctly British accent. I've re-watched the earlier seasons again more recently and remember being shocked hearing Rob's voice for the first time being like whattt, the show isn't voiced by a Brit like everywhere?!
I caught an episode of Mythbusters on, I think, BBC America, and was confused why the narrator was changed. I know we might confuse each other a little with our vernacular but I didn't think it needed to be completely redubbed in "British," haha.
one of my favorite Robert Lee narrations on the show was from the viral video episode, during the fainting goats segment, where he said something along the lines of "no animals were harmed during the filming of this segment; however many of them felt they were made to look stupid!"

Just to clarify, Mythbusters originally WAS 30 minutes in the UK with a different narrator, just not the one people are thinking of in the rest of the comments.
In 2006 the first UK airing of Mythbusters was on BBC Two and featured Rufus Hound as the narrator. It only lasted for one season and was barely reshown, if ever.
I've been looking for an episode of this cut for AGES, if anybody has an idea where to find it, please let me know.

Im from the UK, I've only ever seen mythbusters on discovery, 1 hour long and the same narrator as is now on the amazon prime version (so I presume the same narrator as the original)

One of the most striking things about watching Adam answer questions like these is how fast he is to just list off names of people he worked with.

I love that you finally talked about this. I remember being a little bummed out that Rob wasn't in the reunion episode after the finale. He was such an important piece of the show.

I will never get tired of seeing Adam’s beautiful face and hearing his beautiful voice/laugh.
I am watching this as a 36 years old production ingeneer and i just love it because Adam Savage gives such a human dimension to stuff that, has watchers, we just take for granted.
Man, Mythbusters losing out on an emmy 8 or 9 times in a row should be some kind of a criminal offence!
For real. Though I think we are obligated to also pay our respects to Antiques Roadshow which has been nominated and lost 16 times now xD
@@chris-hayes Anitques Roadshow has deserved to win for sure, but they gave the award to poisonous drivel like Undercover Boss and Shark Tank. Poisonously corporatists and neoliberal TV and basically the opposite of Mythbusters in terms of societal impact.
Being from the UK, I have watched plenty of episodes with both narrators...and to be honest, I enjoy both equally!
This question absolutely needs a follow-up from Robert Lee himself.

I was going to say when clicking into this video, in the UK we had a different narrator, then glad you touched on it in the info. A few times when I’d search the internet to find an episode I had missed, invariably I’d find a US (well I guess ‘original’) version as it would always sound ‘strange’ and ‘wrong’ without our narrator!
From a UK viewer who watched from series 1, the UK narrator did the show more than justice to a UK crowd.
Rob had such a wonderfully jovial tone throughout the show, always felt like it was a friend telling you about the show as you watched it, giving you the occasional wink and a nudge in a "wait til you see these" sense.
UK Mythbusters did have a different narrator and he suited pretty well to the show but that's what I grew up on so I can't compare with the American version. I don't ever remember Mythbusters being 30 mins though, pretty sure it was always 60 mins including ads.
60 minutes and the narrator I believe was called Robin Banks, which I remember because everytime they did a heist episode there was so many jokes made at our house.
There were two UK versions:
* The Discovery UK & Ireland version which is the International Cut (the 49min version, rather than the American 41min) but with Robin Banks narrating.
* The BBC2 cut which is the 30 minute version , which IIRC was narrated by Rufus Hound, and was easily the worst version of Mythbusters to watch.
I'm just glad that Amazon Prime in the UK has the 49 minute International cut with Robert Lee, although sadly missing the last couple of seasons, a few misordered episodes and a handful of episodes where I'm guessing the rights for movie clips made it prohibitive. The only alternative is the Discovery US cut for purchase, and not for rent or Prime.

Rob's voice has surpassed "iconic" for me, it's burned into my memory in the best possible way. I associate his voice with coming home after school. My mom would usually also be arriving home and my dad would have been home for about a 1/2 starting a pot of coffee and turning of an episode of Mythbusters. Great times.

Robin Banks was the UK narrator and our shows were 60 minutes, the same as the US version.
Not on 1st couple of session, the comic book episode was different version to USA as well vacuum toilet on plane and exploded cookie mix
Rob's voice is as much a part of my childhood as the show itself was. I'm so happy you took some time to talk about him. His delivery of those puns was nothing short of magical.
I 've been willing to ask that question for years hahaha!! The Narrator was for me the 7th member (yes I count Buster!) of the Mythbustes on every episode!
I loved his sort of neutral and easy to understand accent. And the way he read the jokes, I don't why but some that I remember the most involved Sgt. J.D. Nelson (himself very funny each time he appeared on the show) when you went down the Alameda bomb range!
As a fellow Attention Defecit person I envy you so much Adam, and your ability to tell stories in such a lovely way and share your memories with us!! I am SO bad at telling stories that I usually just keep mine to myself, lol.

Tangents that orbit the main point is a great way to feel like we know him well, he has no shame in sharing all the details he can think of and that's really respectable

I can hear Rob’s voice in my head, he’s such an iconic voice
I love the original narrator, I can hear his voice in my mind so easily from growing up on mythbusters! Such a character !
The British version as shown on Discovery Europe was an hour long (once you add in all the really annoying commercials), and was narrated by the iconic Robin Banks, who is Irish and a bit of a radio celebrity over here (and absolutely crazy). His cheeky take on the narration was great, so I wouldn't worry that we don't get to hear Rob Lee.
Winning an Emmy or not I can definitely tell that in my childhood, and teens, twenties and still now Mythbusters has been and still is so much more important and a part of my entertainment than so many Emmy winners.
adam consistently has only good things to say about other people in his field, old coworkers, and even acquaintances or people he only met once, even if they didn't get along personally, and i really respect that
Celebrities, especially actors, are extremely sensitive people. It only takes a few snide remarks about co-stars to be labeled as "difficult" or "toxic" and you're out of work. No matter how much you dislike working with some people, you find nice things to say to maintain your career.

Robert Lee is a family friend of mine and he's an incredible guy
The UK narrator was Robin Banks (yes... that's his name) who narrated a lot of Discovery US imports for the UK audience. His style was very similar to the original Rob's just with a more UK radio voice (despite being born in the ROI) as opposed to an American one.
Having heard both I'd suggest they were equally as good at narrating (and I think it stems back to Discovery Network Europe buying into some research that stated regional audiences prefer their own dialect and linguistics for narration).
The half an hour cuts for the first few series was to do with scheduling, unsure if Mythbusters would be a hit in the UK, Discovery used it as padding in their schedule. The later series were shown at their run length (often with long ad breaks in the middle than frequent breaks.
The shows in the UK were the same length (one hour TV slot including adverts) but they weren't narrated by Rob. They were Narrated by Robin Banks in the UK. They also changed all the on screen animations to metric as we use the metric system in the UK for most things, though imperial measurement for speeds in cars etc. (mph) and things like altitude in aircraft in feet not meters.
And it was sooooo much better fir it.
We use metric in Australia, but we got imperial measurement and Robert Lee's voice on Mythbusters. (I still cringe when I hear "foot-pounds".)
Well Imagine being in a fully metric country and has to deal with the entire imperial US version... And as a small kid...

I live in Scotland and have been obsessed with MB for over a decade. I have never seen any version of the show without Robs VO. His voice was integral to the show.
Robs narration completed mythbusters perfectly…man I miss those shows one of my all time favorites I can watch mythbusters reruns and never get tired of them such a great show thanks Adam for these behind the scenes of mythbusters on tested your awesome🙏👍

One of my favourite shows, Mythbusters. I've seen every episode of every season, and today I learnt 2 things that I didn't know:
1 the narrator was an Aussie
2. The show was edited in Sydney.
Question: if you had of started a travelling Mythbusters (taking it around the world) do you think the show might still be running
I wish Heather could've like, been a part of the blueprint segments or something, but I understand how the direction of the show had changed.
I just liked her a lot, she was a nice part of the program.
Honestly, as a Brit who watched mythbusters every weekend, the UK version was great, it was very weird rewatching it with the US narrator but got used to it after a while haha but the UK cut was just as good and was iconic in its own ways imo
As a UK watcher of Mythbusters whenever I see an episode with the Australian/Canadian/American narrator it is a surreal experience.
I always loved the voice work of the narrator, always pulled me right into the show as me and my family would have dinner together when I was no older than elementary school
When it was shown properly on Discovery in the UK it was the correct length (at 1hr including adverts) but we had Robin Banks as the official narrator.
BBC Two once showed it edited down to a half-hour, narrated by Rufus Hound but that didn't last long.
I guarantee you many many people remember Mythbusters more than most of those Emmy winning shows.

The UK version of the show was 48 minutes long (opposed to 42 in America) not 30

The second UK version was 48 minutes, Adam is talking about the original BBC Two cut of the first season with Rufus Hound.
Only allowed 12 mins of adverts per hour in the UK (plus trailers).

Adam, Mythbusters might have lost 8 or 9 Emmys, but you (plural) won the hearts of millions of the greatest fans in the world. Thank you to everyone who made the shows happen.

One of the biggest mistakes is Mythbusters not winning an Emmy.
I completely forget the title these videos by the end because I get so enthralled but with Adam saying he's just such a fun person to listen to. Love ya man. Hope you're doing well.

Yes, the UK Mythbusters episodes were narrated by someone British. No, they weren't half an hour long, they lasted the full hour (incl. ad breaks) and followed the same US format of 2 myths from Adam & Jamie and one myth from Tori, Kari and Grant (I think...it's been a while)
I’m bummed that Robert never got to make an on screen appearance to say goodbye in the final episode.

Awesome clip! Yes, Rob Lee is the best! He is the king of delivering puns and humor. I had the privilege of working with him on a dozen projects, at least, and he was the best part of every single project I got to work on with him. He can bring every script to life like no one else. Cheers, Rob!!

Still hard to believe they never won an emmy for such an iconic, groundbreaking show.
You guys deserved an Emmy. There is no other piece of television that has been so influential on my life. That is why I am still here. I'm still not ready for Mythbusters to be over.
