Joker: "do I really look like a guy with a plan?"
Also Joker: all of this
"Now, I see the funny side..."
No, he just does things
That’s the irony, he understands and anticipates every move these people (Within the law) will do cuz “it’s all part of the plan”. He flips that and uses it to turn the city upside down. Total Maniac and Heath did a fantastic job here.
Joker tells Harvey at the hospital: "I took your little plan and turned on yourself"
He just does things tho. He can cobble together a 10 second scheme but there is never a bigger plan.
Thr fact that Joker intentionally gave batman the exact opposite info about where Harvey and Rachel were is both genius and terrefying
Honestly, I don't think he even cared. To him, every choice is pointless- it's all a sick game to him. Though it is likely that this Joker was broken unlike most others, it doesn't excuse him from actions that we would consider utterly crazy.
It was intentional because what the Joker said to Batman before he gave him the addresses was that "I thought you were Harvey Dent, the way you threw yourself after her" meaning he was gonna switch those addresses to manipulate batman even more. It's similar to his "I want my phone call" scene as well.
If you remember in the end when batman beats the joker. The joker says that his trump card was dent. I think that was a part of the reason why that the switch happened.
In the ongoing game of TIL....holy crp. Never thought of that.
He didn't give exactly opposite address, he said truth "killing is a choice" so batman did decide to kill Rachel , not even batman and audience payed attention cuz that moment was heated , but joker is a man of his words
4:14 Absolutely heart wrenching scene. Harvey’s “No” and Batman’s split second hesitation, realizing they’d been tricked and that Rachel was going to die.
The first person angle used when breaking the door is a masterpiece
I think it would be better if Joker gave the exact location where Rachel is, But Batman doubted Joker thinking he's going to trick me and go to opposite location where he think Rachel was there. But got Picachu face when he realise Joker telling the Exact location.
*THIS*
I remember that moment. Thanks for reminding me.
Good to know even if Batman made the opposite choice in Joker’s game, by going for Harvey and saving Rachel, Harvey would die a hero with the citizens turning on Batman for failing to save him and the Dent Act is formed on a truth instead of a lie.
@@joselitopuzon5620That sounds more like Mad Hatter or Hugo Strange than Joker. .

What a chilling line
Heath Ledger’s acting in this is incredible
He went from toddler mode to boss mode quick in that part of the scene lol
* T R I G G E R E D *
Remember he's just acting. He isn't the writer.
I like how he says that in their last moments people show you who they really are.
He gets tossed off a building and falls down towards a certain death and laughs all the way down before getting rescued by Batman.
He managed to break Harbinger.
He must be flying the Normandy
Fun fact: Heath ledger was originally going to get professional makeup, but he chose to do it himself because it would look more realistic
Heath did it himself the first time because it would be in character for the Joker to do it himself, but the makeup artists recreated the same look when he needed his makeup.
also fun fact: Heath Ledger based the joker off of Tom Waits - czcams.com/video/gCSc6E4yG9s/video.html
He also let Christian actually beat the shit out of him in the interrogation scene and, and, and, and. Dude there’s not 1 iota of this performance that’s not iconic movie lore now.

Heath's acting is the reason people watch it again and again.
Go back to china
Yes
Thats not the prime reason,at least not for me.
His performance is like a cherry on the top of cake.Imo,this film has the best screenplay in cinema, miles ahead of Chinatown and Citizen Kane.Right up there with The Godfather films.
No it's not yes he's phenomenal bit the whole movie was very well written as well as every actor was great in their roles, heath was the cherry on top
Yeah, and I also watch it dubbed in my mother language because the actor who dubs Heath Ledger is phenomenal. He was actually the first one who came to my mind when I was thinking about who could dub him.
4:14. The heroic music cuts out completely, then the jokers theme slowly emerges- paired with Dent screaming… it gives me the chills. Without the movie actually stating anything, it conveys that the Joker had won. What a masterful scene.
To think, if Bruce wasn't in so frantic of a mood and blinded by emotion, he might - though very unlikely - have predicted the Joker would have tried something devious, or went to Dent's location knowing that is what Rachel would have wanted even if it means she would die.

Cool story bro
It's a brilliant scene, but the Joker wins a little too much. He makes Batman and everyone else look dumb and weak throughout the whole movie. Which is great for the actor and makes people think even more of him, but is actually bad for the audience and the filmmakers, because Batman is supposed to be the hero, and Batman is the one whose name is on this movie and the next ones, and the toys and games etc, so the whole machine is designed for Batman to be the one who is dominant and most liked. They did end up making a Joker movie though, but when the character is villainous, it's hard to make things work.
The fact that this film did not get even a nomination for best picture is b.s

The moment Batman rushes in, he stops for just a sec. cause he realized that he had to save the wrong person.
And that second could have spared Harvey those burns
Yeah, that was a nice little nuance they put in. A similar concept is in the movie 'the American's with George Clooney.
He plays a sort of skilled but washed out and downward spiralling assassin and gunsmith. At the beginning of the movie he is attacked by assassins and kills them but in the process he fears that his secret life is exposed to his girlfriend whom he then kills and flees.
He goes to Italy and gets another assignment from his handler. It's simply to build a gun for another assassin. He starts making connections with people and falls in love with a hooker who returns his feelings. He completes the gun and delivers it and plans on retiring and leaving the assassin life with the new woman. But he then fears that the gun he was building was 'for him'. And it was. But he had sabotaged it and it injures the assassin hired to retire him.
But his handler shows up to finish the job. He's able to kill his handler and flee to go meet with the woman. On his way there, there's a moment when he realizes that he was actually shot in the fight with his old boss and is going to die.
There's such a moment of disappointment, not that he's going to die. He knew that he would likely die in this trade, but that he came so close to winning only to still die in the end. It's a really well done scene.
I got to say that while I'm not really a huge Clooney fan, he's been in some really good movies. This one and Michael clayton are both really good. I think mostly because he plays very quiet charachters in both movies and the story depends more on plot and non verbal acting from him.
No matter which - batman or bruce - would loose a friend or love or someone of insane importance. Its the choice that joker is interested in.
Even Harveys pain as well! As soonest Batman opened that door. He knew he was chosen. He knew the situation, but man! Joker with zero emotions Hella of scene.

What’s mind blowing is that Rachel’s last thoughts at the end of her life could have been, “Bruce saved Harvey and not me because of the letter I wrote him telling him I was choosing Harvey”
Exactly. I feel like that element of this scene is vastly overlooked. There's many layers to what's going on here and it's a very bleak realization but most likely what she was thinking in her last moments. She may have really thought that Bruce did that in spite of her.
Never realized that before. What a great point
Ur a genius.
That would make no sense if Bruce was really upset over that he wouldn’t have save neither of them 🤣

The way Rachel just accepts it, the slight happiness in her voice knowing that at least harvey will live despite knowing she was done for. Superb acting.
Naw that bitch was just hiding the embarrassment. She was soo sure that she would be saved.
Joker said that people show who they really are at their last moment, rachel was happy Harvey was saved, i think if she really was a bitch like everyone says she would be angry and crying because nowone saved her
“I know they are but I don’t want them to” So selfless.
Yep precisely, Rachel would rather be the sacrifical lamb than have Harvey be blown to kingdom come. Not just happiness but also relief, knowing that it was Bruce/Batman who came to save him. Harvey mattered more to the people than her, due to his high campaigning to wipe the cities clean of criminal activities. But what's more depressing was that before her death, Rachel never realized that Harvey would take the loss very badly and become a psychotic vigilante, to take it out on those he felt were responsible for her death. I'm sure that Rachel would never want to see that happen at all. But as the Joker said during his conversation with Harvey in the hospital, it was all "part of the plan". Things only got worse as the story progressed... ending with the demise of Harvey "Two-Face" and Batman voluntarily covering up for his crimes, to keep Harvey's "white knight reputation" intact for the next 8 years.
No, she died thinking they would save her. She thought he was just freaking out. She was just trying to calm him down. Both of them thought they’d rescue her.
at 4:14, the look on Bruce's face says it all. the acting is so good that even with 80% of his face covered up you can see the devastated look on it.

Its his body language too. Batman doesn’t hesitate. And here we see him freeze, even if it was a split-second.
Rewatching the movie you realize that Rachel thought Batman chose to save Harvery because of her letter. Which makes this scene that much sadder because in reality Batman wanted to save Rachel, but the Joker gave him the wrong address. What a movie, absolutely superb writing every time I rewatch it, I notice something new.
In that case, Rachel assume Batman was going to save her in the first place. And all along she is thinking that she can survive while Harvey will die? I don't think so.

For people wondering how Joker magically survived that explosion and everyone else died. That guy he was holding was a shield to protect him from the explosion
I don't think the folks in that room died, they simply got stunned. Because the dude who had a shard of glass to his neck is actually in later scenes, with a bandage in the area where the glass shard was.

It's impressive how much you can tell about a character just by using Joker's line about people in their last moments. Rachel was comforting to Harvey, the policeman who was held hostage told the other cops just to shoot him because it was his own fault that Joker got out.
Interesting observation.
This is one of the last great action films that also make you emotional for the characters involved, like T2 Judgement Day, Mad Max Fury Road, Aliens, etc. Truly one of the last "substance along with style" action blockbusters ever made.
THIS is how a character makes a perfect escape.
Step 1: Anticipate getting caught.
Step 2: Set a trap.
Step 3: Distract your captors.
Step 4: Spring the trap.
Step 5: Walk out the door.
A truly well written scene for any suspenseful story.
This is exactly how Raul Menendez escaped in BO2
They replicated this in Skyfall. Less successfully in my opinion because Silva's plan made no sense.
Step 6: Be in a fiction where the timing is always perfectly convenient and the odds are always in your favor.
C'mon, it's great, but let's not pretend this isn't a common trope.

@@romanramirez7847 I believe the term is hubris.
@@romanramirez7847 I don’t think it’s overconfidence. This is a seasoned cop, no doubt. It’s more of how Joker can really get under the skin of even the most veteran or the best of them, I mean just look at Harvey. All of them, good men with good intentions.
Well, if the long-standing theory about this Joker in fact being a former special force, or black ops soldier, was true, then it isn't that surprising that he overpowered a cop.
Rachel was so disappointed. This was like the ultimate rejection.
Será ydd
I mean, she was the one who rejected Bruce. She probably thought that was the reason why he saved Dent, since she didn't know Alfred actually burned the letter.
@@wilberts.cubero3629 wow i never thought about that before... lol
Rachel actually thought that Harvey rejected her saying "Yes"... BUT he later said "No, not me! Why are you coming for me??" which referred to Batman showing up to save him. It was what Rachel would've wanted, to have Harvey survive, so she can die in peace.
However, she never realized a few things... 1) Harvey was disfigured even though he was saved, 2) he went insane and took her death very hard, then went on a murdering spree as Two-Face, 3) Alfred would burn her letter to spare Bruce further pain, and 4) Batman would tell Gordon to hold him responsible for Harvey's appalling crimes and also be wanted for the apparent murder of Harvey, so as to preserve his heroic image.
@@Tanat83
She also didn't know that Joker lied to Batman about where she was so that he would save Harvey instead of Rachel.
I love the heroism of batman... going in and saving dent despite the risk of being burnt to a crisp
Eckhart's acting is so good here; you can really feel Harvey's literal and mental pain, as well that complete loss of spirit that turns him evil.
4:31 The sound in his voice and the way he says “RACHEL!!!”
Refusing to let her go or say Goodbye really hits you hard, what an underrated actor!
He was fantastic. He was really only overshadowed by the Joker. Eckhart = 9.9 Ledger = 10
@@livingtorture5745 he couldn't sell the character. Too soft and weak to be convincing. Aaron and Maggie made me dislike both their characters. They almost ruined the movie if not for joker and Batman going at it. Gordon was pretty good too.

There are many cases when an actors work is appreciated more after they pass away. But that can't be said for heath ledger. Even if he was alive there is no doubt his acting was out of this world. I can't take my eyes of the screen when he's on character, especially as Joker. Phenomenal.
The best villain on screen ever as heath ledger was truly brilliant and captured everything the joker was. No other person as a actor can compete with that as he raised the bar so high i doubt we will see anyone do a job that good for decades it was so special. What a dedicated actor he was and I wish he was around now he was that special a actor.
Before TDK, people used to say the same thing about Jack Nicholson. And since TDK, lots of people have preferred either Joachin Phoenix or Cameron Monaghan's takes over Ledger's.
Heath was great as the Joker, but his fanboys tend to go overboard with their praises.
Also, even if he only appeared in a post-credit scene and in a deleted scene, Barry Keoghan showed immense potential in his short screentime.
While watching him, I got the same tingles I got while watching Heath Ledger for the first time as Joker (in particular the scene where he confront the Gotham mob families), and Cameron Monaghan dropping the mask in front of Jim Gordon in *Gotham* ...

@@lickenhuntsman5338 ok Mr. Genius, no one mentioned PTA or even said Christopher Nolan is the greatest director so stop bieng smart.
Maggie Gyllenhaal did a phenomenal job at potraying Rachels final moments. I love the subtle panic in her eyes and face as she tries to keep cool while telling Harvey its okay; I think its very realistic; even though she clearly wants Harvey to live and tries to accept her death, she still must have felt an overwhelming amount of fear when she realized that she was going to die, as her self-preservation instinct kicks in.
And Batman proves true strength in this scene; I can't believe what pain he must have felt while he was dragging Harvey out, knowing that Rachel was most likely doomed, yet he is still able to keep a stoic composure to save Gothams Hero. Makes it all more tragic, when his belief in Harvey Dent doesn't pay off and Harvey is corrupted; its no wonder that the events of this movie broke Bruce.
i always knew from the start that harvey's gonna turn to two face but not sure how since the movie had a realistic take. it was when he fell to the floor with all the oil running that sent chills down my body

What I love about this scene is how Nolan shows just how scary smart the Joker is. The movie makes you think Joker has slipped up and got himself caught, and then in an orchestrated crescendo Nolan shows you that the Joker is both the conductor and composer. To top it off it all feels somewhat plausible for one person to plan, with some help of his henchmen. He plans to get caught, leads Batman to an interrogation, tells him about Rachel and Dent, gets him out of the way and then gets his phone call to trigger the bombs in the jail that he had surgically implanted into some poor fella and get himself locked in jail at the same time, which could have been Joker giving his henchmen instructions to put him in if the Joker's not back by a certain time. The same trigger is Dents and Rachels. He notices the shard of mirror behind his head, improvises and uses it to get what he wants. Possibly you could say it's not plausible that Joker could have timed it all so well, but he might have been able to plan how long it would take for the cops to get to Rachel, purposely placing Rachel further away than Dent and knowing the time was set from when he tells Batsy where they are. From there, he only has to make a call in the window of opportunity that he knows he has until the cops get to Rachel, because he purposely set it up for Dent to survive, or kill Batman trying to save Dent. Legally he had a right to his call. If he didn't make the call in the right time and the Rachel and Dent plan failed he would have still been able to escape the jail by making the call later.
First time I saw this scene I was on the edge of my seat. The soundtrack building up, the joker manipulating the guy and then Batman saving Harvey when he meant Rachel. God damn I love this movie.

Fun fact: The glass shard that Joker is pressing against that cop’s neck was due to Batman smashing his face against the 1-way glass, further proving that Joker was manipulating Batman, and that when Batman gets pissed, he gets sloppy.
